from an upstairs window, the chatter of children from
inside theii hEmes and mqvers loading _EE a truck

Since residents of this Newport Crest neighbor-
hood learned their quiet neighbor James Lee Crum-

his eviction and a calm in the neighborhood.
Madelynn Forgey, who rents the condominium to
Crummel, served him a notice on Friday to-vacate ill

"We don't know anything further as to when be

Presents . . . 9 ''Beyond the . Living Trust''
Advanced Estate Planning
Strategies For The 211 ' ~entury
We designed our "Beyond the LiVing Trust" Wotkshops as a forum to itlustrafe the
tecniques and strategies available for comprehensive and intelligent estate planning.
A Jiving trust should form the core of any sound estate plan. But, basic living trust
planning is no longer enough for clients who want a comprehensive approach to their
financial and family management.
Individuals with estates larger than $600,000 and couples with estates llrger than $1.2
million need advanced tax strategies in addition to good living trust planning to avoid
unnecessary erosion of their estate by taxes that range between 37-60%. And. its not only
about your heirs. Advanced strategies can also benefit you during your life by protecting
your wealth from erosion by capital gains taxes, ~tive tax on IRA withdrawals and the
risk of liability from lawsuits.
But, Beyond the Living Trust strategies are not just about the wealth you leave behind.
You need advanced strategies to improve control over your assets while you are alive and
well. or it you become sick or disabled. You need advanced planning to get customized
documents, rather than the "one size fits all" boilerplate, to help realize your hopes,
dreams and aspirations for you and your loved ones' future.
Our workshops will show you how "Beyond the Living Trust" planning can help you:
• LEARN HOW THE PROPQSED TAX CHANGES CAN IMPACT YOUR
PLANNING
• Enhance ~ benefits of your living trust
• Use your annual exclusions and other lifting strateates to limit your taxable estate
· • Own life insurance in ways that maximize control a.nd eliminate income and estate taxes.
• Use GRA'li and QPRTI to reduce the transfer tax cost of giving assets to your heirs.
• Minimize the 55% Generation Skipping Transfer Tax (which is in addition to the
estate tax)
• Use the Capital Galm and F.state 'JU Bypau Trust to increase your after-tax cash
flow, and avoid erosion of your estate by capital gains and estate taxes.
•Use a Family Limited Partnership to protect assets from liability exposure, maintain
control over family assets and reduce your taxable estate by 30-50*.
• IRAI -Cope with nearly 100% combined marginal estate, income and excise taxes on
large IRAs.

I hgh senior M.E. Clayton surprised few
when she qualliie d for the CIF Division 0
Finals in three events Saturday at the divi--
sion's track and field preliminaries al Tra-
buco Hills High.
"Like the professional she is," said
Newport jumps and hurdles co&ch Nowell
Kay.
Newport junior Chuck Loo, however,
was pleasantly stunned when his initial
triple jump attempt demolished his previ-
ous best by more than two feel and landed
him in Saturday's division finals al Cei-rltos
College.
"I was disappointed about not qualify-
ing in the ( 110-meter high) hurdles and the
high jump. but I just tried to relax going
into the triple jump." said Loo, one of 11
Back Bay athletes who earned berths in
the finals, including six locals advancing in
nine individual events.
"I told myself I had three jumps and I
really wanted to let loose. But when I
popped that first one 44 feet (44-61/4 to be
exact, the third-best mark of the day), it
even surprised me. I usually cut my middle
phase short, but I really got good extension
on that one. That jump really let me know
I could do it. I felt like I could, but now I
know. U 1 can go 45 feet next week, that
should move me on (to the CIF Masters
Meet, comprised of top qualifiers from all
Southern Section divisions)."
The top nine in each event advanced
from Saturday's prelims, with heat winners
in the running events earning automatic
berths.
Clayton qualified second in the long
jump (17-4) and triple jump (35-61/2), and
posted the fifth-fastest clocking in the 100
hurdles (15.89).
Other locals moving on included Coro-
na del Mar freshman Liz Morse (third in
the 800), Newport senior Sylvia Madueno
(eighth in the shot put and discus), Harbor
freshman April Ross (high jump), and
Sailor sophomore Alida McFall (fifth in the
3,200).
In addition, Harbor relay teams
advanced in the girls 400 (Cary Morrell,
Autumn Puro, Katie Kent and Leah Zaby
qualified seventh) and 1,600 (Zaby, Kent,
Sara McMillen e.nd Puro qualifed fourth),
the latter coming within a half-second of
breaking the school record. ·
Clayton, who finished second ln the
triple jump and seventh 1Jf the long jump at
the DiVislon ll Pmall last spring, posted
markl very simJ.lar last Wt!ek's Sea View
League Finals, where she captured long
jump gold, silver in the hurdles and bronze
ln the triple jump.
"She's very consjstent right now, which
leads me to believe she's ready to bust out,
especially in the triple jump,~ said Kay,
who noted Clayton Will indeed compete 1n
all three events next week.
Clayton's long jump Saturday was best·
ed only by heralded Mission Viejo High
junior Ashley Bethel (1'1·10). She was
eclipsed in the triple jump only by Alexis
Hill of Pomona (35-11).
Clayton wa1 second in her hurdles heat,

trip to the CIF Division VIlI Playoffs,
said he'll go MoJ'\day-Thursday eacb

workouts sch~uled ·for 2112 houis
each.
Llebengood, who, like Brinkley,
enters bis 12th season leading his
program, said be plans to go Monday-
Tbursday -barring Memorial Day -
spending about two hours on the field
each day and another hour in the
weight room. The Eagles were 7-3
last fall, but did not make the playoffs.
Brinkley's charges, 12-2 a year
ago, will complete their familiar rou-
tine, which includes lifting, from 2-6
p.m. each weekday from May 27-
June 13.
No area program currently plans to
hold a traditional spring game, but
Brinkley did not rule out such a con-
test.
Howell said he will reprise last
years father-son flag football scrim-
mage on June 5, with a barbecue to
follow, while Freeman noted a seven-
on-seven skeleton drill will take place
before any spectators who wish to
attend at the conclusion of spring
drills.
While Newport and CdM will once
agAin implement familiar schemes on
both sides of the ball, Costa Mesa
plans to shift 'from a double-wing
offense to a more diversified Wing-T.
Estancia also plans to add an I for-
mation to the double wing it
employed last tall, with diversity" in
mind. ~
The Eagles, unaer the guida:n-ceor
former Newport assistant Bucko
Shaw and Kent Paul as co-coordina-
tors on delense, also plan to move
away from their four-four scheme to
feature more five-man fronts. .
Shaw, whom Llebengood wel-
comed on as a consultant for the final
two games last season, is one of the
noteworthy additions to local staffs.
While Brinkley is still working
toward finalizing the arrival of a new
defensive coordinator to replace Tony
Ciarelli (now head coach at Hunting-
ton Beach), he apnounced the hiring
of longtime ~e High assistant
Zaverio Brenner to instruct bis offen-
sive line.
Brinkley said his new defensive
coach could be on board some time '
early during spring drills.
All four coaches said the chance to
evaluate personnel, teach fundamen-
tals, implement offensive and defen-
sive schemes, and build team unity
are all valuable byproducts of spring
sessions.

When I saw Azusa play >

there was a chink in the
· team's armor. The squad's
bitting was solid throughout
in horrendous fashion.
Injuries and youth took their toll and the
blue and gold found themselves 3-21-1.
!'{ow what I'm going to tell you is not
about the greatest turnaround in the history
of sports. Nor am I going to tell you how they
went on a run to win the Golden State
Athletic Conference or any Hoosier-like tale.
While the 1997 version of the Vanguards
did ndt live "Up to the winnin~standards that sec teams of the recent past had
established, this team displayed the same grit
and character that a team that finished third
in the nation showed just a few years ago.
After the poor start, Ren.koski's squad
went 17-10 and on a 6-2 pace to wrap up
GSAC play. The team finished in a tie for
second and with an overall record of 19-31-1.
The GSAC softball slate was strange.
Azusa Pacific was more than dominant as it
accumulated a 14-2 conference record. The
other four teams seemed to be evenly
matched, which made every game a battle.
But if we went by the nwnbers, the
Cougars from Azusa should have been 16-0
-but sec beat them twice.
Five of the top six batters in the
conference·were Cougars. They owned the
nation's winningest pitcher in freshman Kerry
Martin (42). They held the team batting lead
by 41 points. Their team earned run average
was almost a whole run lower than anyone
else's in the conference.
But the Vanguards just showed some
spark that said, •Nothing is a give-in.·
the lineup. The pitching
was good, and Martin was great. They
seemed to be disciplined, mentally tough and
enthusiastic.
But the Vanguards got to them, and that is
a credit to each member of the team and
coaching staff at sec.
But they weren't done.
When SCC upset Hawaii-Pacific I thought
there was a mistake to the press release. But
that paper coming-across the fax read more
than that Renkos.ki's squad bad won 1-0. It
said that there was a tough group of women
playing with their hearts as much as with
their bats and gloves.
Yeah, they had a losing season ... but how
often do losing seasons have so many thrills
and can be looked back upon with so much
pride?

Costa Mesa High graduate Katie Grogan

weekend she and the University of
Massachusetts Minutewomen finished ninth
in the nation at the U.S. Water Polo
Collegiate I Championships. After falling to
Cal and USC, UMass defeated No. 13
Michigan and No. 9 Maryland.
Grogan earned an honorable mention
All-Tournament selection after posting eight
goals.
The Minutewomen were 26-7 and
Grogan, a freshman, set several
single-season records. She was the team's
leading scorer with 173 points and led the
squad to its first-ever bip to nationals.

A • Since chances of game seem
remote, there are those who would
suggest a pass to show a minimum
opening bid. But can you be sure
one spade is the right contra<:t
when partner might have a weak
four..card holding in lhe suit? With
a nat hand and eound opening-bid
values, make your normal rebid of
one no trump.
Q. 2 • As South, vulnerable, you
hold:
• K 7 6 O 8 o A K 6 5 • J 10 9 6 2
Part.ner opens the bidding with one
club. What do you respond?
A • If you play forcing jump raises,
we favor a jump to three clubs.
Your five-card eupport, eingleton
heart and prime values in the other
euits suggest game i.n a euit con-
tract. If three clubs would be a limit
raise, however, you must start with'
one diamond.

A • Don't for a moment consider
passing because, in terme of high
carde, you have a dead minimum.
With your 6-5 distribution there
