WEST SIDE -Pastor Bill Gdrtnerwill
not withdraw his appbcation to operate a
homeless shelter at Harbor Christian Fel-
lowship, as he said. he might after nwner-
ous residents spoke against the proposal
at Monday's Planrung Commission meet-
in\}.
Gartner was on the verge of waving
the white flag on Surrender House, say-
ing he was distraught after the meeting
because the cntic1sm had been unex-
pected. After bemg confronted outside of
Council Chambers by residents who
threate ned to sue and inundate the
.
,. Police Department with phone calls,
Gartner had said be was considering
withdrawing his application.
•It would have really been a wrong
decision.• Gartner said Thursday.
Gartner applied for a conditional-use
permit to house 13 homeless men and a
su~or in a room of the church. at 740
Wilson St. The application comes more
than 1hree months after Gartner wa5---
required by the city to evict eight home-
less men staying in a makeshift shelter m
a room at the back of the church . The
room did not meet codes for living quar-
ters and did not have direct access to
bathrooms or a kitchen, as the new room
does.
Gartner said he will not withdraw his
application because he believes that res-
idents' resistance to the homeless shelter
stems from a history of noise complaints

However, when Lebrun

D oes yours work? Min~

Cell phones. One more
technological advance that I
resisted as long as I could.
Ridiculous, 1 snilled. What is the
matter with these people, I
scoffed. What is so almighty
important that it can't wait until
they get to the office or back
home? That's what I said. Until I
got one. As with every other
techno-leap, novJ I can't remem·

pathetic. I'm like a toddler with.

golf courses, planes, trains, and
automobiles. In fact, I can't
remember being on a plane in
the last few years wnere a flight
attendant didn't have to tell
someone to lose the phone.
But there is a growing cell

Tannenbaum.• The real problem
is the shouting. Since the con-
nection is dicey half the time,
you're never quite sure if the
person on the other end can
hear you. Without thinking, you
talk louder and louder, not
unlike a trip to Mexico. The
fewer words of Spanish you
know, the louder you say them.
"OLA, AMIGO, CUANTO ES

the quiet answer. "Eight l)ucks."
And what a nice touch at the

-to hear that little "chiiiir-

#Oh, h1I Not much. What are

But there's also a siruster side
to the whole trung. Have you '
'heard the fretting ab.out cell ·

ently, th~re .is some concern that
nsmg a cell phone while pump-

and you're vaponzed in fireball

Some poor soul m a gas stahon.

reward wlien the pump he was
standing b~'ide blew up, wh1ch
ig.nited the gas in his tank,
which -well -it was ugly. To
this day, no one has figured out
wh~t happened. So what does
any of this have to do with cell
phones? A number of witnesses
reported that the man was using
a cell phone when the big boom
boomed. That\ it, the whole
deal. m toto No one m duthonty
ever connected the ceU phone to
the blast, but the media 1umped

The heaviest damage was

WEST SIDE -Early Thursday
momrng, police arrested four sus-

responsible for a window-bredk·
ing frenzy that resulted in more
than $3,000 in damage.
Andres Barrios, 21; Alberto
Landeros, 18 and two 16-year-old
boys, all of Costa Mesa, were
charged with misdemeanor van-
dalism and held m lieu of $2,500
bail. One of the JUVeniles was
arrested on suspicion .of driving
under the influence, as well.
Police say the foursome target-
ed a two-block radius around
Joann and Miner streets shortly
before 3 a.rn. and began smash-
ing vehicle windows with a base-
ball bat and a two-by-four piece
of plywood. Authonties said rune
vehicles were vandalized by the
suspects before they drove away
in a 1979 gold Chevrolet station
wagon .
Costa Mesa police officers
spotted the suspects' car nearby
and found the bat and glass frag-
ments in the back seat.
Police had no comment on
the motive behind the destruc-
tive rampage but noted it
appears no vehicles were specif-
