Last week, Orange County Superior Court upheld the city's decisiop to deny the Martingale Way restaurant's permits. Of course, the Mermaid h8s remained open for 15 months now, nearly a year of that time without permits. So will the club finally be closing? For the past six years, he has been researching the lives of Halliday and Her- bert, and was referred to me as a person who has lived in New- port Beach since the last lee Age. However, I had to admit I had never heard of Halliday or Herbert. Of course, that isn't particularly surprising, since my musical taste runs more to Louie Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald than to stars of remaining ancients of my time. Just to show that he wasn't kidding, and in an effort to edu- cate me into the world of Broadway shows, particularly light opera •. .he sent me 5>ome excerpts :from a tome entitled, "The Musical Theatre," and from it l gleaned tha t Halliday and Herbert, husband and wife, were indeed Broadway stars of the '20s and '30s, two of the biggest names in the world of operetta. 11reywere best remembered for singing the romantic leads in Sigmund Romberg's robe rt gardner operetta, "The New Moon.· It seems that Herbert was a protege of Enrico Caruso, no less. However, she didn't stick to opera. Rather, she and Halli- day we'nt into operetta. Her- bert's most important roles were the lead in Rom berg's •My Maryland" and also the lead in Noel Coward's· "Bittersweet." Halliday was·known for cre- ating the role of the Red Shad- ow in Romberg's "The Desert Song." Then. according to "The Musical Theatre," they 'lwent into i:etirement in California." At Uia..t point, they simQly_dis- appear from public view. No way. Two of Broadway's bright- est stars don't simply disappear . But they did. However, Shaindlin had stumbled on their death certifi- cates, which indicated they had both clied in 1975. The death certificates showthey had lived in California for the past 37 years, and at the time of .their deaths were living in Bayshores. The certificates indi- cated that the informant was a William Durante . Well, what do you know? That turns out to be Bill Durante, well-known local attorney and longtime local boy, our own Bill Durante. So I called Bill. It was true that he had known the Hallidays but · was surprised to discover that they were Broadway stars. They Sllllply told bun that they had been "smgers. H Nothing more. I guess they treasured their anonymity. I For a rather small town, Newport Beach has been home to qwte a few people from what might be loosely called the world of entertainment. We started m 1908 with Madame Modjeska and proceeded through Jascha Heifetz and into the movie world with Andy Devine, Ruby Keeler, Claire nevor, Buddy Ebson, John Wayne, Jimmy Cagney and many others. So now we have a couple of Broadway stars to add to the list. 1 If by any chance any reader of tjl.is ~olumn happened to know the Hallidays, you might be tempted to write to Shamdlin, do Lyric Opera of Ctucago, 20 North Wacker Dn- ve, Chicago, ID., 60606.
