Name-calling is an old tactic, used by people who can't argue the facts or who feel guilty or are scared in some way about the message that is being delivered. Threatened by lhe flat tax? I watched a • lot of TV and talked a lot on the phone. It started iil March when we . sold our Bayport Wey home and moved to a two-bedroom town- house we leased irJ Newport and then set up home irJ a condo we bought in Rancho Mirage. Dur· ing the same period of time we moved my office from a single 1 downstairs unit to an upstairs suit~. I lifted too many boxes and in a period of weeks, my arms and hands went numb and legs became weak. There were days when Barbara would have to button my shirt because I could- n't feel my firlgers. Keeping my anns up to shave or brush my teeth was difficult. After a few treatments by Car- ol LaBlanc.~.C.. she~ncouraged • me to see a neurologist. But with the EPP program I have, I started with my regular doctor, Hartley Turpirl, M.D. He quickly referred me to a neurologist, C. Phillip O'Carroll, who quickly referred me to a neurosurgeon, Dr. Oleg Chikovani. He performed surgery on a number of verte- brae in my neck April 9. Chiko- vani, O'Carroll, Tutpin and oth- ers was greatly appreciated. The only other time I had surgery in a hospital was in 1949 when 1 was 8 and had my tonsils out. Also appreoated are the many friends who drove me places during my convalescent time - Margaret and Hank Weber, Bob and Ginny Robins; Roger Alfred, Dick Dickson, Bob Wood, Dean the drive to the desert when time and my health would peml!t us time to get~ our new home. "I've been able to learn a lot about coaching styles and techriiques from all of the coaches l 'played under," Taylor said •1 had a chance to learn from {former Rams Head C0c1ch) Rich Brooks at OSU and we still keep in touch." After his playing career came to a close, Taylor began his · coaching career at Edison High from \977-80 under Workman. "Bill is a real people-person,• Taylor said. •He is an incredibly hard worker and is very much a family guy. The human side of Bill Workman is the one thing teams to back-to-back Sunset League titles Crom 1979-80. From there, Taylor was named head football coach at Laguna Hills High in 1980 Taylor led the Hawks to CIF playoff appearances in 1981 and '82 •You can be a lot more creative and diverse as a coach because of the higher athletic ability at this level,• Taylor said. One of the onginal members of Coach Charlie Brande's Balboa Bay Club Volleyball Club, Yardley never met a block she couldn't hit through 'while playmg at Newport Harbor High in the 1970s.
