NEWPORT BEACH -The

Political action committees
seemed more receptive, sending
Cox $22,411 after release of the

$73, 100 for the penod in whlch
Cox raised a total of $155,000
from all sources.
Newport Beach residents
have contributed the largest
chunk of inclividuaJ cash,
$29,~25. to Cox's campaign the

just $12-,500 for residents of
South County ..
Cox also raised $2J,250 from

running, Cox spent $55,000. His
spending included about $6,000

1 asked my dear fnend and
fellow columrust, the Rev. Peter
Haynes, to introduce the piece,
as he did in For the Love of

•Here is a summertune medi-
tation_.." Peter write'), • courtP-sy
of the wisdom of an 8-yea.r-old
parishione.r who wrote this for a
third-grade class assignment,
'How would you explain God?'•
I dare say, you have rarely
heard a better explanation than
this:
"One of God's mairl·jobs is
making people. He makes them
to replace the ones that die so
there will be enough people to
take care of things here on
earth. He doesn't make
grownups, JUSt bab1e5. I think
because they aro smaller and
Cc1s1er to make. That way, He
doesn't have to' take up His
valuable time teaching.them to
talk and walk. He can just leave
that to the mothers and talliers. r
"God's second-most job is lis-
tening to prayers. An 'awtul lot of
this goes on since some people,
like predchers and things. pray
at times besides bedtime.
•God doesn't nave time to lis·
,ten to the radio or TV b~cause of
this. Smee He hears everything,
not o~y prayers, there must be a
terrible a.mount of noise ih His
ears, unless He has thought of a
way to tum it off. God sees
everything '8nd hears everything
and is' everywhere, which keeps
Hun pretty busy,
"So you shouldn't waste time
by going over your parents'
heads, asking for something

•Atheists are people who
don't believe in God. I don't
think there are any m Corona
del Mar. At least there aren't
any who come to our church.
•Jesus is God's son. He used
to do dll the hard work, like
wa.µcing on water and perform-_
ing miracles and trying to teach
people who didn't want to learn
about God. They finally got tired
of Him preaching to them and
they crucified Him.
"But he was good and kind
like his Father, a.nd He told His
Father that they didn't know
what they were doing and to for-
give them and God said pK.
"His Dad (God) appreaated
everything that He had done ·
and all His hard work on earth,
so He told Him that He didn't
have to go out on the road any-
more. He"tOuld stay in Heaven.
So He did.
, •And now He helps His Dad
out by listening to prayers and
seeing things which are unpor-
tant for God to take care of and
which ones He can take care of
Himself without having to both-
er God. Lilce a secretary, only ·
more important, of course.
· ·vou can pray anytime you
want and they are sure to hear
you because they got it all
worked out so one of them is on
duty all the time

church on Sunday because it
makes God happy, and if there's
anybody you want to make hap-
py, it's God Don't skip church to
do something you think will be

Hart said. "This has turned into
quite an event"
The gathering w~ meant to
represent an affirmation of hope
for youth in light of recent
tragedies in Colorado and
Arkit.nsas, the group said. And
teens were bused in from Arizona
and parts of California to take

recently completed a permit
request for just 150 people. They
also failed to mention that a Mass
would be held.

all of us is the greatest gilt of love

Sinacori saJd it is doubtful the
g_roup will 9e given a permit to
hold a Mass at the pter next year. ·we would never have given
the permit if we knew the size of
the crowd would be so large, and
we would not have granted the
permit 1f we were aware that a
Mass would also be held," Sina-
cori said
She said 3,000 peop1e in the
space at the pier constituted a
danger to those congregating
there. With relatively little space
available for large gatherings,
Sinacon said the permit was
granted only for a day of fun.
Hart said he had not been
aware of the permit's restrictions.
The Rev. Fred Gaglia, who led the
Mass, was vacationing in Disney-
land Tuesday and could not be
reached for conunent, Hart said.

Declarer won with dummy 's oce

pounced w1U1 the ace and reverted to
a club, East's ten winrung. Now East
had to decide whelher to revert to
hearts or continue c.:lubs. Since West
surely knew whether a heart could
cash, and would ha'le Ulken a se~ond heart if there was a trick m lhe suit,
East led a third round of clubs. West
ruffed with lhe e1gh1 of lnlmps for a
one-trick set. ·

Now West would hove had no woy to
