SPORTS Adoption Guild tennis tournament results Serving the Newport-Mesa community since 1907 Just · another busy holiday· Extremely heavy crowds resulted In an average of 30 rescues a day by lifeguards along the Newport Beach shoreline this weekend, said Lt. Eric Bauer, of the Newport Beach Fire and Marine Department said. "It's an average holiday weekend," he said. "Maybe more crowded because of the weather: 68 degree air tempera- ture, a 70 degree water temperature, a. light wind at 10 to 12 miles out of the west with some haze." But Bauer said it was not unusual for Memorial Day week- end, adding that the department was well prepared with 25 manned lifeguard towers, six patrol units, four supervisors and a boat patrolling the 6.5 mites of New- port Beach. "We had a crowd 'of 105,000 on Sun- day," he said. "At least 100,000 plus all three days." Bauer said for those beach goers who didn't live close enough to walk or didn't have a secret parkjng space, park- ing spaces were j scarce. He estimated that all the spots were taken as earty as 10:30 a.m. Surfers didn't have a lot of surf so there weren't many boards out on the waves, he said. "There's been a few rip tides today, but the surf hasn't been that big today or yesterday," Bauer said. The fact that there were no major inci- dents was especially good news because this is National Beach Safety week. he said. "We hope to con- tinue that way throughout the sum- mer," said Bauer. About 200 people, one of the larger crowds recorded in recent years, braved the hot sun to honor veterans at the 43rd annual Memorial Day services on Monday at Harbor Lawn Memorial Park and Mt. Olive Cemetery in Costa Mesa. The event, sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars ~t Line Post 3536, was one of several held in the area to honor veterans who have sacrificed their lives for our country. "Every time you see a flag flying, remember some veteran gave his life for you,• speaker Daniel R. Davey said, addressing the crowd. Davey, a Santa Ana resident, said he was one of the few vete rans who came back from World War ll alive. It was because he survived that he was prompted to dedicate his life to helping thousands of Hopis and Navajo Indians after the war. "I wanted to do something with my life besides killing,· Davey said, adding humbly that he was honored by four presidents for his many volunteer efforts. Mayor Peter Buffa, a veteran of the Vietnam war, was thrilled that so many attended MQnday's ceremony. • SEE MEMORIAL PAGE 4 STORY BY SUSAN DEEMER • PHOTOS BY STARR CARROLL THE VERDICT The adventurous llfe of Charlle Plummer Pfu ,f ; 'Domiie was such a great friend' • Memorial services held for Newport Harbor High student killed last week. HE IS A dentist who loves giving free root canals, especially when they're for the needy and the homeless who visit the free dental clinic ·at Share Our Selves in Costa Mesa, where he volunteers twice a week. TOOTH FAIRY TALE Marcks, 39, of Irvine was inspired to become a dentist after he helped organize the beginnings of the SOS dental clinic in Costa Mesa 10 years ago. As director and coordina- tor of the dental clinic, he made appointments, screened patients, kept records and recruited volunteer dentists. Marcks watched the volunteer dentists at SOS take a patient who was in pain, calm him down and relieve the pain. He wanted to do that, too. He also likes to work with all the gadgets dentists use. "It is a real nice helping profession," he said. Although be also works for Charles P. Tozzer in Irvine, Marcks loves volunteering as a dentist at SOS. "There's a sense of satis- faction here," Marcks said. "You can't put a price tag on that." DENTAL SCHOOL After graduating in 1986 from Southern California Col- lege where he majored in reli- gion, Marck,s volunteered for SOS for more than a year before he decided to pursue a career as a dentist. Before going to college, Marcks said he centered his life around himself, his family and the church. After college he decided to broaden his per- spective of religious life and started reaching out to the community as a volunteer at SOS. After taking some sci- ence classes at Rancho San Diego College, Marcks stud- ied dentisky at Loma Linda University from 1990 to 1994. HAVE NO FEAR For patients, the ominous smell of the dental office is scary enough to miss an appointment over. But for dentists like Mar- cks, the distinctive smell of clove oil -used in a lot of the cements and other dental mate- rials -is a pleasant odor. MI like the smell," he said. The fund-raiser will be held ..this weekend at Uons Park ln Costa Mesa. T he recent death of Charlie Plummer wu a shocker. He couldn't have been 70 years old. Why it seems only yes- terday ... My first awareness of Charlie Plwnmer was of a skinny little kid running on the streets of Bal- boa with his eq\ially skinny little cousin, R~thellen (later Mayor) Plummer. And I mean running. They never stopped, never sat · down. Never walked. But they did run. Golly, how they ran'. I was 15 years older than they so our paths didn't really cross very much. I seriously doubt they were aware of me. But I sure knew about them, the skinny lit- tle kids who ran all the time. The running Charlie Plummer was the son of another Charlie Plwfuner, my aquatic mentor. That Charlie Plummer 1 shall call Old Charlie. The ,skinny little kid I shall call Young Charlie. Old Charlie Plummer taught me almost everything important I ever learned in life. He taught me bow to swim, how to body- surf, how to board surf, how to skin dive. He taught me how to find my way under water in the great kelp beds. He would sit for hours beside a tide pool and explain life and death In that tide pool as well as John Steinbe~ ever did. Old Charlie taught that and more to Young C harlie. Because of our age differen- tial, the paths of Young Charlie Plummer and Bob Gardner didn't cross very much. Then in the early 1940s, Old Charlie, his new wife and Young Charlie moved to Laguna, and I lost contact with the family. I knew that Young Charlie had become lifeguard captain, and that was about all. Then, when I returned home volunteer directory • The VOWNTEER DIRECTORY runs periodically in the Daily Pilot. These weren't chil- dren's books. No, sir. These were the writings of Mane, Engels, Thoreau, London, Paine, Stein- beck. I also remember a phone call :· in which Young Charlie expressed himself as being out- raged by the treatment of young Joan Irvine at the hands of the directors of the Irvine Founda- tion. It was the "pludcy little girl· against the •entrenched tycoons,· the kind of thing that raised Young Charlie's ire. Young Charlie was very proud of tu.s fanuly, particularly ' .. •, of his great-grandmother, Maria : Cecelia Plummer, who barely escaped Emperor Maximilian's troops in about 1865, making a hazardous journey out of Mexi- co only to end up in Los Ange- les where she acquired large hunks of what is now West Los Angeles and Hollywood. Young Charlie also led an adventwous life. One time he called after returning from a diving expedition somewhere in the Caribbean looking for a Spanish treasure ship. Another .. . ·. tune he had just spent several ·. months studying desert life in Arizona Young Charlie was an inter- esting man. I'll miss those phone calls. I still can't believe he was 70 when he died. Not that skin- ny little kJd who used to run on the streets of Balboa. I • ROBERT GARDNER is a retired judge who lives 1n Corona del Mar.
