NOT SO NEIGHBORLY
Some Costa Mesa residents
aren't shy about expressing how
they feel about thelf neighbors
to the east, Newport Beach.
As part of the commuruty

DOWN IN HISTORY
Costa Mesa hired a consultant
to document all pos 1ble historic
sites irl the city.
The consultant has submitted
a list of more than 4,000 proper-
ties that will be presented to the
City Council today during their
study session. ·
Mayor Gary Monahan had a
chance to previ.ew the list Fnday

weekend of Aug. 21, and another
scheduled for November had
been put on hold earlier this year
because of a court case relating to
how the state determined
requirements for gun shows.
Questions were also raised
because of the flurry of gun-con-
trol legislation proposed after
high-i>rofile incidents such as the
Columbine Higt\ School shootinq.
•Tue general direction that we
got in May was that we were not
to issue any new contracts for gun
shows," said Becky Bailey-Firld·
ley, general manager of the
• Orange County· Fd.U'.
But the Division of Fairs ·and
Expositions instructed officials at
the Orange County Fair to allow
the August gun show because a
contract had already been signed
with promoter Crossroads, Bailey-
Findley said. The fate of the
November gun show hasn't beetl
dcoded.
It is not known how any legis-
lation will affect gun shows at
California fairgrounds, said Greg
Humer, acting director of the
Division of Fairs and Expositions.
"Obviously there are a lot of
bills in the legislature nght now
that are contemplating several
different approaches ld gun
shows,• Hurner said.
Whatever is decided, Cross-
roads officials sa1d anYthi.ng that
happens at the federal level will
probably not affect CaWomia.
"The California laws are much
mo;e strict than m other Meas of
the country,· srud Tracy Olcott of
Crossroads. "The thing!> we've
been domg m California go above
and beyond what is beirig consid-
ered at the federal leveL •
For example, licensed gun
dealers have been reqwred for
years to perform background
checks at California gun shows.
Olcott said. There is also a 10-day
waiting period so no one is actual·
ly walking out of the f8J.Tgrounds
with gun in band.
Crossroads is also strict about
safety, Olcott saJd. Minors are
allowed on ~ grounds only if
accomparued by an adult. Also,
anyone who brings 1.0 a fll'eann
must check it m and have it dis·
abled with a nylon be. Ammuni-
tion that is sold also comes in
sealed conta.mers, she said.
