NEWPORT BEACH -City officials
knew Life Teen would be holding Mass at
the Balboa Pier last week -they just
weren't expecting so many youths to·
attend. •
A spokeswoman from the cty last week
told the Pilot the group failed to inform offi-

said Life Teen would have been derued a
permit if it had.
But Monday, Community Services
Director LaDonna Kierutz, who processed
the penrut June 23, Sdid Life Teen paid tlie
aty $280 lo rent the park and get the per-

to attend, but some 3,000 youlhs ultimately
showed up.

It's underused because it is in
Ontario. No one will drive there from
here as long as I.Os Angeles Internation-

Suggestions that John Wayne would
be dosed U El Toro is built, or not
expanded if El Toro isn't built, are equal-

El Toro opponents say they want a

taking place dunng the con-

-El Toro, the Lighter Than
Air base, the Los Alanutos
Naval Air Station, the Seal
Beach ammunition depot and
the naval shipyards in New-
port Beach. In those serruhys-
terical early Wd.f days:every
construction accident on those
bases was thought to be possi-

Bob team was summoned.
Tom had jurisdiction over civil-

The El Toro accident was
easy. All the pilots told us that
the dead man SlDlply got too
close to the plane in front of
him and got caught in what
they called the lip stream and
couldn't pull out of his dive.
End of another invesUgation.
Probably our most dramatic
mvesbgation involved the
Lighter Than Air base dunng
the construcoon of those huge
hangari:;. A large, fan-like con-
traption was built on a flatcar.
The workmen worked on the
outside edge of that fan while
building the roof of the haQgar.
The fan on its flatcar was
moved along railroad tracks as
construcUoh progressed. One
night a heavy wind came up.
The railroad car and fan
moved: and the whole struc-
ture ca.me down. You never
saw such a pile of smashed
lumber. Sabotage? No, a care·
less workman sunply forgot to
put the chock behind the flat-
car's wheels. That was fairly
typical of the investigations w~
conducted.
Only one mvolved an inten-
tional act, although not by a
German or Japanese agent. In
one of the Newport Beach
slupyards, a workman found a
lighted cigarette in a pile of
shavings. Some kitchen
matches were tied to the light-
ed qgarette When the burn-
ing ember of the cigarette
came to the matches, there
would be an mstant fire in the
shavings. Pretty dever --dlld

en Gary Magner ttnftl says he lived a
charmed life in
football, believe him.
As a quick, hard-nosed
defensive tackle, Magner played
on winners at every stop and
only an ankle injury in the NFL
prevented him from achieving a
Super Bowl championship ring
, with the New York Jets.
•1 was so close (to playing m
Super Bowl m when Joe
Namath's Jets upset the
Colts},• said Magner,
who watched the game
from his New York
dwelling while his ankle
was in a cast.
victory over Northeastern
Oklahoma before 44,044 fans
at the Junior Rose Bowl in
Pasadena. A national television
audience also watched the game, •o1
and OCC ended the year by
outscoring its opponents, 330-43. ,
•That '63 team was really
the toast of the town,• Tucker
said, referring to an era when JC ,
football was king.
At USC, Magner was among
the smallest defensive tackles in
the Pac 8 Conference at
6-foot-3, 222 pounds. After
redshirting one year, he
started for the "frojans in •
1965, '66 and '67.
During the
recruiting period in high
school, Magner, like
most any football'player
coming from a Catholic
school, wanted to play
for Notre Dame. But the
coach of the Fighting
Irish at the time, Joe
Magner, though,
played on USC's national
championship team in
1967, Orange Coast
College's· JC national
champioflShip squad in
1963 and Mater Dei
High's CIF Southern
Gary Magner Kuharich, told Magner
he was "too small to
play big-time college football.• Section title team in 1960,
when he was a sophomore. •u I would've played in the
Super Bowl and got a ring (with
the Jets), I would've had the
greatest career of any kid who
ever lived,• said Magner, who
grew up in Costa Mesa, played
prep football with fulur!!
Heisman "fropby winner John
Huarte (Notre Dame) and earned
Player of the Game hono~ in the
1963 Orange County All-Star
football game.
Magner got bis revenge.
When the 'Itojans'
first-string tackle got injured
before the annual Notre Dame 1 -,i) game at South Bend, Ind., in
1965, Magner was asked if he
could handle the starting
assignment. He played like a ,. ·a a l
hungry lion. ~
·1 wanted to go to use (out
of Mater Dei), but you had to'
have a certain (grade-point
average) and I had such a good
~e in high school, I didn't have
such a good GPA,• added
Magner, who enrolled at Orange
Coast for one semester and, to
his swprise, found that Coach
Dick Tucker's ~quad was
something special.
•1t was an unbelievable
year,• said M(\gner, who
remembers le8ming of the JFK
assassination while walking on
the occ campus Uu\t fall.
•There was a personal ,
feeling of achievement," Magner
said. •u was big time.·
Magner, who played on
USC's '67 national title team with
All-Americans Ron Yary, Tun
Rossovich, 0 .J. Simpson and
Adrian Young, said the most
tenacious player he ever faced
was former UCLA quarterback
Gary Beban.
"That guy was the toughest
stud I ever played against,"
Magner said. "I'd hit him so
hard, he would scream in sheer
agony, and then he would get
rlght back up and play.•
Selected in the fourth round
by the Jets in the NFL Draft,
Magner made a quick
impression during training camp
in 1968 -he started a fight that
lasted for about 20 minutes
agamst the Houston Oilers in his
first exhibition game.
...
•I came from Mater Dei,
where football was really
business with (Coach) Dick
Cowy. He was a great coach, but
Tucker made it tun. On hot days,
we would practice at the beach,
and we still went out and won
football games and had a lot of
fun doing it. The camaraderie
was unbelievable.•
Magner, whose NFL career__,.;--
spanned two seasons, is a
Magner, fullback Bob
Hayes, halfback Mike Hunter,
center Greg Wojcik and
linebacker Rod Paterno earned
JC All-American distinction in
1963 as Orange Coast captured
its first of two national titles
(Tucker's 1975 team also won a
national championship).
The Pirates swept to a 10-0
record, shutting out six foes, and
capped the season with a 21-0
member of the Daily Pilot Sports
Hall of Fame, celebrating the
millennium.
Since leaving football, he
has been in the medical
business, selling implants for
spine surgeries. Magner loves
his three-acre home in the wine
country, Sonoma, where he lives
with his second wife of 10 years,
Nancy.
Magner has two grown
daughters, Kelly and Kristi. and
two grandchildren, Andrew and

$altwater fishing remains
extremely good au along
the south coast line for a

the fishing even gets better
when Newport-based
sportf ishers head out to San

awesome.
The bbl spot at the island is a

yellowtail weighing in the 12 to

Also getttng into the strong

the 18-to 22-pound range while
fishing on poard open party
charters booked out of Bongos
Sportfishing, based in Newport.
Over at Davey's Locker,
spokesman Howie Howerton
reports all the local sport boats
are hmiting out on sand bass.
"The bass bite has been
great for the ball-day,
three-quarter-day and twilight
tnps now that sand bass have
moved into shallower water and
schooled up,• Howerton said.
"Cooler water should keep the
bass on' the reed through the
month of August and there is a
good supply of anchovies in the
bait receivers to accommodate
these hungry bottom-feeding
bass.·
The sport boat, "Thuderbird, •
has been fishing both yellowtail
at Clemente and albacore on the
Butterfly Bank when weather
permits. It's been hard to back
off on the excellent yellowtail
fishing at the island to run
out.stde and fish albies.
Fishing on board the
