• Mermaid ...
I t isn't often a columnist runs
across a subject almost guar-
anteed to offend both hard-
core feminists and religious fun-
damentalists. But I think I have
one here.
I've been talking about doing
social research at the Mermaid
ever since I started writing this
column, but I've never quite
made it. Then two things
nudged me. First, it appears the
authorities are finally closing the
Menna.id's last legal loopholes
prior to shutting it down. And,
second, I had this conversation
with The Editor.
I came in to drop off a column
and he said he had an idea for
me. He wanted me to visit and
profile a local bar that he
claimed is the toughest one
around. I suggested that if he
wanted to send me to such a
place, he go with me. He said he
couldn't because he bas three
small children.
So I said how about doing the
Mermaid, instead, and he said
fine. When I asked him to go
with me there, he told me about
these three little ones again, so I
took along a lawyer friend -
name mercifully deleted -just
in case we got busted.
Newport Beach officials have
been threatening to do that to
the Mermaid ever since it
opened, and this has all been
duly chronicled in the press.
Given all the other problems
we're dealing with today. the
time, money and effort being
expended to shut down the Mer-
maid hit me as overkill. But I
couldn't make such judgments
without firsthand knowledge.
And since no one I know was
either willing or able to offer
information, a visit to the Mer-
maid was clearly indicated -
even though my wife found this
threatening.
There's only one entrance to
the Mermaid, and to get through
that door, the customer has to do
business with a hard-eyed man
in a cashier's cage who explains
the ground rules. No alcoholic
beverages. Five-dollar cover
charge and minimum of two
drinks once you get inside.
Absolutely no physical contact
with the dancers. After this brief-
ing, I was given change in multi-
ple $1 bills. Their purpose didn't
become clear to me until later.
If there's a dancer onstage-

Officials seek ways to curb auto speed
By Jennifer Armstrong, Daily Pilot
NEWPORT BEACH -The city
will be paying closer attention to
traffic on Santiago Drive, especial-
ly as officials in neighboring Costa
Mesa consider weys to reroute
their city's traffic.
The City Council Tuesday put
together a committee to consider
traffic control methods -such as
speed bumps and signs -on the
residential street between Irvine
and Tustin avenues. The commit-
tee will also keep an eye on Costa
Mesa's decisions resulting from its
own traffic study of East Side
neighborhoods near the two cities'
border. .
Council members said they'd
like to work amicably with the
neighboring dty but are more con-
cerned about taking care of their
own residents.
•eosta Mesa is making a con-
scious effort to dump their traffic
on our west side," Col\11cilman
Tom Edwards said. :
Council members also bantered
about other less conventional ways
to slow traffic -photo radar,
which would read license plates
and send tickets to speeders, and
landscaped islands in the middle
of intersections. The committee
will consider those and other sug-
gestions before making a recom"-
mendation. to the council in 30
days.
Santiago Drive residents' previ-
ous complaints about speeding dri-
vers resulted in striping to narrow
lanes, a center line with raised
pavement markers and pavement
markings underlining the 25 mph
speed limit These measw-es, how-
ever, haven't slowed traffic,
according to city studies.
'f:o provide enforcement of the
road's speed limit, the city would
have to raise the limit to 30 mph,
staff reports said. State speed trap
laws determine how speed limits
must be set if police want to use
radar to catch speeders.
Raising speed limits for that rea-
son on other streets throughout the
city caused an uproar in January.
The city cannot slow traffic
down too much on the street
because it's design'ated as an
•arterial link" by the county, ~
reports said Santiago Drive, which
attracts 4,000 to 4,500 cars each
weekday, p~ovides drivers a
straight shot from Newport Beach
through the Costa Mesa freeway
to Huntington Beach.
So the council also voted Tues-
day to take the steps necessary to
downgrade Santiago's designation
from an arterial road to a local
street. That would mean the city
could slow traffic down even more
-after many months of bw-eau-
cratic processes.
Costa Mesa officials are now
considering ways to reduce traffic
in the residential areas bounded
by 17th Street, Irvine Avenue,
Mesa Drive and Newport Boule-
vard. They'll discuss the issue at a
community workshop at 6:30 p.m.
June 4 ill the Costa Mesa City
Council Oiambers.
A consultarlt hired by Costa
Mesa sugge.sted the city close
median openings on Irvine
Avenue or block access to some
streets to prevent cars from passing
through the neighborhoods. The
city's staff proposed changing traf-
fic light timing, restricting twns on
Irvine Avenue and using raised
pavement markers.
Newport Beach city staff reports
predict any of those options would
increase traffic on Santiago Drive
-a fact that doesn'~escape New-pott officials. They plan to send staJf and council members to Cos-
ta Mesa's traffic meetings and to
ensure that city's actions don't
adversely impact Newport resi-
dents. •
"1 believe we need to take the
leadership role and do on our
streets what we need to do,"
Councilwoman Nonna Glover
said .

tip leads to
drug-bust
• Costa Mesa couple
arrested after tossing bag
of cocaine out window.
By Christopher Goffard, Daily Pilot
COSTA MESA -A Costa
Mesa couple was arrested after
allegedly tossing a bag contain-
ing cocaine out the window of
their apartment when they spot-
ted police approaching. Monday
evening, authorities said.
Marcelino Urquilza Soliz, 27,
and his common-law wife,
Angelica Rodela Valenzuela, 21,
were booked on suspicion of drug
possession with the intent to sell
after police found the bag with 78
grams of cocaine, a digital mea-
suring scale and drug-packaging
material, Costa Mesa Police Lt.
Ron Smith said.
Responding to an anonymous
•check the welfare" tip, two offi-
cers approached the Avocado
Avenue apartment -one from
the front, one from behind -
around 5:50 p.m., Smith ~d.
Apparently having seen the
first officer approach, Soliz threw
the bag out Uie back· window,
"right into the lap" of one of the
officers, Smith said.
"If they'd kept it inside, hid-
den,.they probably wouldn't have
gotten caught," Smith said.
"Every once in a while the breaks
go our way."
Smith said Valenzuela is cur-
rently on probation for prior drug
sales and speculated the couple
may have feared the apartment
would be subjected to a proba-
tion search.
After a search of the apart-
ment, police seized $16,460 in
cash, which authorities believe to
be proceeds from drug sales,
Smith said.
Soliz was booked into Costa
Mesa city jail and Valenzuela
went to county jail, both with
$50,000 bail. Valenzuela also has
been charged with a probation
violation, Smith said.

With CdM Coach
Mike Starkweather's

Veteran Corona del Mar High
boys coach Mike Starkweather,
however, is plotting to unleash d
tsunami into a sport where the
slightest ripple is construed as
dangerously rockin g the boat
By Richard Dunn, Daily Pilot : It is happening. Our people

Starkweather, a catalyst in
getting the CfF Southern Section
to incorporate all eight available
lanes for section championship
and consolation fmals just a
couple years ago (they had been
using just six), has set hJs sights
on adding swimrrung to the

schools for postseason •
And at stake will be the
Tea-to-Green Cup, symbolic of
the women's area championship
that features the four superstars
from Mesa Verde, Big Canyon,
Santa Ana and Newport Beach
country clubs.
Where they play, they rule the
roost; and on Aug. 1 the score
will be settled.
The ladies themselves prefer
their margin of victory not be
continuously published, but for
the record, Marianne Towersey
(Santa Ana), Selby Schriber (Big
Canyon). Denise Woodard (Mesa
Verde) and Debbie Albrighl
(Newport Beach) will represent
their clubs in the inaugural
Tea-to-Green Cup because they
won by a combined 49 strokes,
or 12.25 strokes per player.
That's dominance.
And that's what really brought
this inaugural club golf
tournament into focus.
The series will continue in·the
fall with an anticipated men's
championship.
Mesa Verde doesn't play its
men's dub championship until
Aug. 17, Santa Ana does it June
14, when a first-time winner a
year ago, Rick Herrera, will try to
defend his crown.
Gary Singer (Big Canyon) and
Joey Stafford (Newport Beach)
wo.n men's titles earlier this year.
Dave Tanchuk wW defend at
Mesa Verde.
While some of the ladies rule
at their respective dubs, there's
much parity among the local
men who enjoy an abundance of
success on the links, meaning
five are capable of winning at
Mesa Verde, about 10 who are
truly scratch golfers couJd win at
Santa Ana, and about 10 or so at
Big Canyon are qualified to win
its title.
There are 37 low-handicap
players at Newport Beach,

with drink carts on the coutse
and an awards luncheon

tentatively scheduled for 9 a.m.
Just for a quick glimpse of our
ladies, Schriber has won six
consecutive titles at Big Canyon,
while Towersey has won 13 of
the past 16, believed to be the
most championships in the
history of the club, which is also
the oldest in Orange County.
Woodard's Mesa Verde

of a long title-streak by Natalie

Not many expected CdM to

ATiiENS, Greece -Team USA stag-WATER POLO
gered 1996 Olympic Games gold medalist
Spain in the opening round of the 1997 FINA World Cup Tuesday
with a 10-7 victory.
. ln a rematch of the Olympic quarterfinal contest won by Spain
m Atlanta, Team USA got on the board just 24 seconds into the
game when Wolf Wigo found the net.
U.S. Coach John Vargas' squad never looked back.
The Americans took a 6-2 lead into halftime and added four
more, inducting a score by Corona del Mar High graduate Chris
Oeding.
. Team USA J~ad by as many as five goals, but Spain scored two
m the last two minutes of the game to account for the 10-7 final.
Goalkeeper Dan Hackett from Irvine tallied eight saves as lead-
ing scorer Chris Humbert notched three goals.
The FINA World Cup pits the top eight teams from the previous
Olympics against each other in pool play before this weekend's
semifinals and finals.
Sailors 4 x 400 girls relay in Masters Meet
The news got better for the Newport Harbor TRACK
High girls track and field team Tuesday, as Coach
Eric 1'weit announced the Sailors' school-record-setting 1,600 relay
quartet of Leah Zaby, Katie Kent, Sara McMillen and Autumn Pu.ro
indeed qualified for Friday's CIF Southern Section Masters Meet at
Long Beach City College.
The foursome, which finished fourth at the CIF Division II Finals
Saturday at Cerritos College, earned the ninth-best clocking
(3:57.65) among all divisions to claim the final Masters Meet lane.
The time was obliterated the 4:00 school record that had stood
since the 1970s.
l'weit also estimated the Sailors finished third in Division II, with
36 points, behind J.W. North (78) and Woodbridge (72).
"I didn't see any final (team) scores, but looking at the results, I
don't see another team that would edge us in the top three,• Tweit
said.

from the Pacific Coast League

League (Division I) and ·they are
really upset with that concept. If
they're worried about competing
with 1,700, how is it equitable to
us to compete in Division I with
less than 1,000? We're Division I
m swimming, but not in
basketball, football and cross

Starkweather believes

But 10 years from now, no one
cares that CdM finished in the
top 10 in CIF. I'd like the chance
to post a CIF championship

Despite possessing logic,
precedent and passion on his
side, Starkweather said his
biggest obstacle remains a
status-quo mindset among
coaches and CIF officials, who

But Starkweather clearly has

"They added a second

out of about 500 schools which
play golf, there is still only one
CIF champion.
"If you're a small school like

there is room for more divisions
in golf."
The lack of more than one
division makes the Eagles' CIF
titles in 1989, '90 and '91 all the
more remarkable.
"I don't think any school since
the 1930s had won three in a
row," Perry said. "But with the
continuing growth of high school
golf, the level of play has really
increased the last couple years.
Last year's (1996) team was as
good as any I've ever had, but it
couldn't even make it through
the regionals.•

• Sea View League rival Woodbridge awaits on
Thursday as CIF Division I Playoffs (finally)
become a critical matter for both contingents.
TEMECULA -Corona del Mar Higb's boys tennis team not
only battled its CIF D1vis1on I quarterfinal opponent Temecula
Valley. but faced the oppressive heat to wtuch the hosting Bean
have become accustomed.
The outcome looked as lf the hosts were the ones that got
fried, though, as the Sea Kings served and volleyed their way to
a 15-3 victory that sends them to the semifmals Thursday against
Sea View League rival Woodbridge.
"They were playing out there in the heat and played under
control. ~t was good," the Sea Kings' Coach Tim Mang said.
Chris Jensen and Curtis Ellmore, Corona del Mar's No. 1 and
No. 2 singles players, respectively, cruised through their match-
es with relative ease. Neither dropped more than one game in
their three sets.
The Sea Kings' doubles team of Sameer Chopra and Reza
Jahangiri made it through all three of their dpponents, but.need-
ed a tiebreaker to overcome the Bears' No. 3 doubles tr,
which, according to Mang, is the No. 1 team disguised.
Next up for Mang & Co. is Woodbridge.
"Good ol' Woodbridge,· Mang laughed over lus talented foe.
uHopefully we'll play our best tennis. We'll need to play real
aggressive tennis, especially in doubles. We have a' shot."
