Racism k11ezv rzo bozt11daries
when races "knew their places"
D unng the early 1920s,
those of u::. who rode the
Pacific Electric -the Big
Red cars -from Los AngelP.s to
·Balboa or vice versd saw on the
beach between Huntington
Beach and the Santa Ana River,
a smoke-blackened plle of con-
crete that rather obviously had
been the foundation of a large
building.
lf you asked about it, no one
seemed lo know much about it.
There was a reason for lhis v~il
of silence. We were looking at
Orange County's most visible
example of the kind ol racism
we thought was confined to the
Deep South.
In 1923, a group of black Lo;
Angeles businessmen <leaded
they wanted to build a beach
club. Beach clubs were mush-
J"oom.ing Oller all the Southland
beaches. This group ot blrtcks
knew they would never be mvtt-
ed to a white man's beach club,
so they decided to build their
own.
They purchased d 30-acre
tract 1usl south of Huntington
Beach. On lt they would bwld
their own beach club. They fell
that they would be far enough
away from any possible contoct
with white people thdt thP1r
activities could not possibly
offend anyone. They undere'>ll·
mated the limitJer.;s extent ol
racism.
They sunk pilings, poured
concrete for the toundation,
erected frames and a roof,
installed cabinets and were
ready to move the fum1lure m
when one rught the who!~ place
went up m a ball of _hre. It wa
obviously arson, but an extQn-
sive mvestigallon failed to reveal
the culpnts Suspicion centered
on the Ku Klux Klan which wds
making a remarkable recm ery
during·the 20s.
This time 1t was nut conhned
to the Deep South. It wcts natton-
wide, with nullions of ml'mbers,
and for some re<ison, parttculc1rly

Just how enthusiastic the
authonties were m uwPst1gatm9
the Klan I do not know, but the
fact remains that no one wc1s
ever charged or convicted of that
particular case ot dl'SOn.
With that as d background, I
go lo Balboa's expenence with
racl!>m m the ·20~. A quick and
ready an5wer ts that there wa~
none. Well not much, anywa~·.

Chuck Cutenese, the
Pirates' skipper for both the
men's and women's volleyball teams for the
' past seven seasons, heads into hls first season
as a full-time coach, a title that suits Chuck
JUSt fine.
"It's like a dream come true for me,"
Cutenese said. "I've wanted to
coach at OCC since I graduated
from Costa Mesa High.• ·
Cutenese is the second-ever
coach for both squads at OCC,
replacing Bob Wetzel on the men's
side and Jane Hilgendorf on the
women's side. His overall record is
199-94 for both programs.
Cutenese has achieved most of
hi$ success on the men's side,
winning three Orange Empue
Conference titles (1994, '96, '98) and
one state championslup (1994).
It's the state championslups that
separate Cutenese from most. Not only bas
he coached a state championship club, but
be also played on OCC's 1987 state
championship team as a setter for the Pirates.
, "To show you how much I respected OCC,
after they reinstated the volleyball program,
I transferred to Coast from Chapman
University," Cutenese remembers. "1 had
already fu.Uilled my A.A. requirements, but I
j(J.St wanted to be part of the Coast
~ence.•
· Not wanting to rest on its past success,
OCC's men's squad has compiled an
I
astounding 78-11 record the past four
seasons, but the state hardware is just one of
the things that Cutenese is fighting for.
"When I first started here, I was totally
conswned with winning,• Cutenese said.
"But the conununity college philosophy is so
much more than that. lt deals with teaching
the athletes about We and now I'm very
much a part of teaching that philosophy."
Before becoming a permanent fixture at
OCC, Cutenese was coaching all over the
place. He coached dt Davis Junior High and
Costa Mesa High from 1985-89 and Foothill
High from 1989-93.
"I coach a little different each year,•
Cutenese said. "You have to be able to coach
to the personality of the team as well as the
athletic ability of the team. If my team is
shorter, then we will focus on
defensive-minded system and if we're taller,
then we'll focus on offense."
Cutenese was also an assistant on the
women's team at OCC under Jane
Hilgendorf prior to taking over the
head .coaching duties.
A local boy, Cutenese was an all-
Jeague setter for Costa Mesa from
1980-83.
•1rs funny, I was a tennis player
growing up,• Cutenese recalled.
"When I got to Costa Mesa, my
parents told me to pick a sport and
there was a lot of volleyball being
played. I was fortunate to have
former Olympian Darlene Bailey as
my first coach and she really us the
fundamentals."
After spending one year at Chapman
University, Cutenese transferred to OCC,
where he not only picked up a state title,
but All-State honors as well.
After Coast, Cutenese finished up his
collegiate career at the University of La
Verne where he set the single-season assist
record.
"Being only 5-6, I really had to rely on my
smartness on the court,-• Cutenese said. "l
bad to be very technically sound and I really
had to be aggressive out there. Height is not
an issue; it's what you have in your heart.•

Cutenese has been rather fortunate to
haye been able to play under some or the
finest coaches in the sport.
Like the old saying, 'you play like you
practice,' I feel that you coach the way you
were coached,• Cutenese said. •1•ve ta.ken
from about 90 percent of the coaches J
played for and I incorporate those styles mto
my system. I still keep in touch with most of
my former coaches."
So what does Cutenese offer his athletes
as a coach?
"I'm tough, but fair; demanding, but
rewarding," he said. "I think that a true test
of a successful coach is when the players
come back to see you after they're finished
playing for you. It's a great feeling being a
part of people's lives.•
