By Jennifer Armstrong, Daily Pilot Now that the Balboa Perform- ing Arts Theatre Foundation has purchased the old Balboa Cine- ma, the group wants to raise $1.35 million for refurbishing efforts. Thal fund-raising goal would cover the pure.base price of the theater, renovation and reopen- ing. Group members also want to raise an additional $150,000 to fund theater operations and ~blish annual fund-raisers to keep things going. The foundation plans to reopen the vacant movie house as a 415-seat theater with new ' SOWld and projection systeml, a roll-down saeen, a revamped orchestra pit and a refurbished facade. The group recently closed a deal to buy the 77-year-old site at 707 E. Balboa Blvd. from the Wortmann family, who purchased it in 1995. The Wortm.aims decid- ed to tum the theater over to the foundation to make the renova- tion a community project. Nelson bad a knack for the busmess, closing deal after deal after deal. All of which gave him pause. • J d ecided there were two ways of thinking about my suc- cess," said the soft-spoken Nel- son, 35. "I could think that it's all me, that I'm pretty special, which would take me further down the pride and arrogance path. Or I could see if there's something bigger at work here. To get our attention, God can either bnng us to our knees or bless our socks off " Nelson qwckly concluded his socks were being blessed off, so he did the only natural thing that came to mind: repay God's favors by Cdrefully studying the Bible and getting involved in a church -m his case, Mariners in New- port Beach. The good times - both financially and spiritually - continued. But then came the '90s. The recession spoiled the real estate party and put the once red-hot market into a deep freeze. Nel- son was ltaid off, a fate shared by many real estate superstars. Fo1 some, 1t was a Cdree r dedth sentence from which they still haven't recovered. This is where the story gets scary if you've resisted a We of faith. •My first thought when I beard I was being la.id off was the golden handcuffs that had been on my wrists were now lay- ing at my feet, and I'm free,• recalled Nelson. •And then all the fears came." Not for long. His years of Christian devotion kicked in. He replayed Bible verses over and over in bis head. Jeremiah 29:11 (•For I know the plans I have for you ... plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future ... •) Philippians 4:6-7 ("Do not be anxious about anything ... the peace of God . . . will guard your hearts and your minds ... ") and Romans 8:28 (•And we know that in all tllings God works for good of those who love Him who have been called according to His purpose ... u). He spent a week alone in the mountains, thinking and praying and developing a grid of values that he'd run all future decisions through. He and his wife Carrie spent hours talking about the next career move. He had job interviews and explored buying small businesses. Eventually an unlikely job - pastor of men's ministries at Mariners Church (now the Mariners South Coast Church) - found him. How unlikely? Nelson -who never thought of being a pastor -was a real estate executive "She's dynamite,• said Vickie Groskrevtz, one of Ayala's former teachers at Costa Mesa High. "Even though she's now a student at Cal State Long Beach, and sings professionally with Otis · Brown (formerly of the Drifters), she still comes back to our school to work with the younger kids," Groskrevtz said. Ayala said that, although she's not sure what her responsibilities will be, "I'll be available to do whatever the city of Costa Mesa needs me to do.• Less will be expected of 11- month-old Shelby Slezak, who captUied the ''cutest baby" tro- phy for children ages 6 to 12 months. Plus, he had to take a.massive pay cut. No more custom suits, no more world travel, no more racing power boats. But Nelson doesn't see any hardship whatsoever. "There has been no price to pay,• he says matter-of-factly. "I'm in a more blessed, more secured place than ever before. We want for nothing. I've tasted the world, and what God gives is so much more than the world can provide." You wish Nelson was wearing a rainbow wig and a John 3:16 sign around his neck. It would be so much easier to dismiss him. You want him to be wacky, crazed, just plain off. After all, he gave up everything we hold dear -a prestigious career, a hefty paycheck, a trip or two to Europe. But you look and look and all you see is a regular guy, except for a peacefulness about him that's unnerving. You wonder if he's really stumbled upon some- thing. He says be bas. It's not about becoming a pastor, he's empha- sizes, but about turning your life over to God. The Lord will take your life from there and do great things with your own special tal- ents. Despite the obvious danger, Nelson makes you want to inch closer to the edge of that dread- ed 10-meter. Scary. • WIWAM L08DELL is the editor. He attends Mariners South Coast Church. Whatever the committee decides, all sides seem to agree on one thing: they don't want dri- vers cutting through the residen- tial neighborhoods to avoid back- ups and stop lights. "We have to try to divert the flow over to the main thorough- fares -the 73, the 55 and lrvine Avenue," Edwards said. BUDGET CONTINUED FROM 1 $482,050. The preliminary budget will be available for review begin- ning today. Roeder said the city will con- tinue to look for ways to cut costs by exploring ways to pri- vatize some services or provide work with fewer employees, he said. Among the services being .considered for privatization is the operation of the Neighbor- hood Community Center, street striping and fire apparatus vehi- cle maintenance. Rbeder said the city's capital improvement budget dropped nearly 70% from the 1996-97 budget because major improve- ments such' as the Harbor Boulevard widening project were in last year's budget. Also in the budget is a request by Mayor Peter.Buffa to attend the United States Con- ference of Mayors. Roeder said the city cut back on travel expenses for all dty personnel several years ago, but City Council members are consider- ing whether to fund this year's request. At tonight's City Council meeting, council members are expected to approve a $6,600 contract for the design of a park in the Shalimar Drive area. Ear- lier this year council members approved the allocation of $200,000 for the purchase and design of the park as a way of improving the area for resi- dents. The council is expected to approve a new ordinance to regulate filming activities in the city, plus amend an ordinance regulating the sale of seasonal products to prohibit the sale of flowers. . Additionally, the council will review a draft study of citywide traffic impact fees assessed on new developments and renew its contract for Community Development Block Grant!AOME Investment Part- nership programs. The meeting will begin at 6:30 p .m. at 77 Fair Drive. COLLEGE PHARMACY •• • SINCE 1962 "OLD FASHIONED FRIENDLY SERVICE." EYE-OPENER U.S. water polo dominates the world at FINA Cup • Santa Ynez wins third straight CIF Southern Section Divison ID title, but Corona del Mar High's Sea Kings prove they belong in the category of a volleyball powerhouse with superb display. By Barry Faulkner, Daily Pilot CYPRESS -The CIF Southern Section Division m runner-up plaque seems a clunky consolation prize for the Corona del Mar High boys volleyball team. After all, when a season worth of hard work, emotion, camaraderie and compe- tition culminated in a heart-wrenching 11-15, 11-15, 15-11. 15-13, 15-13 loss to Santa Ynez during Saturday's 195- minute championship match at Cypress College, it figured a few days were likely required for the disappointment to give way to perspective. But as reflection reveals more positive memories -including a five-game tri- umph over Newport Harbor to earn a share of second place in the Sea View League with the Sailors, a five-game quarterfinal playoff triumph over top-seeded Laguna Beach, a four-game ver- dict over fourth- seeded Calvary Chapel in the simifinals, even the seesaw swan song against the No. 2 seed -one undeniable rem- nant of the 14-5 campaign is so m e thing COM COACH Coach Steve -Conti and his STEVE CONTI players should savor for years to come. uPart of the focus I wdnted for this team this year had u lot to do with respect,· said Conti, who. though gravely disappointed to not have won the school's first section crown since 1989, its third overall, had plenty of praise for his team's accomplishments. "When we found out we had a pretty tough (playoff) draw, the kids were a lit- tle d.J.sappointed. But we used that as part of our motivation, as well. The -coaches told the kids that no one gives you respect. but this was a golden opportuni- ty to go out there and earn it. And that's exactly what they did.· illustrative of Conti's comments was some postrnatch reaction from Santa Ynez, which has now won three straight ClF Division IJI titles, amassing a 62-2 record during that span, which now includes a 20-match winning streal,<. "That was the toughest match of my We,· said Pirate senior outside hitter Mike Wall. who confessed he knew little about CdM. coming in. "The only thing I told the kids about CdM was that is was somewhere near The Wedge," said Santa Ynez Coach Chip Fenenga, who knows all about the Sea Kings' volleyball reputation, having played himself at San Clemente High in the late 1970s. "Isn't there another Corona too?" inquired Wall. referring to the Riverside County community known more for pun- gent livestock-induced odor than the cool ocean breezes that bathe Orange Coun- ty's seaside locale. "We came into this match way over- confident," continued Wall. who banged a match-high 40 kills in his final prep per- formance before heading to BYU. ·we considered (CdM) a Cinderella team, but we came out and ran into a real good team. We played a little tense in the first two games and it was kind of a reality check. (The Sea Kings) made us wake up." Asked how many times this season the Pirates bad been taken to five games." Wall answered qwck.ly. "It was a great match, a great match,• Conti repeated, eschewing redundancy to evoke the proper esteem . "It was exactly like our last two matches, except we came out on the opposite end of the final score." The scores favored each team at vari- ous points in the middle three games, while the first and final games featured at least one tie. "It seemed like Corona won all the big rallies early, then we started winning the big points," Fenenga· explained. The Sea Kings overcame six Santa Ynez over-pass kills to claim first-game leads of 4-0 and 11-6. But the perennial Los Padres League champions pulled even at 4-4 and closed to within 11-10. However, Billy Messenger put away a quick set for a sideout, and an errant Pirate kill attempt, a kill and a stuff block by Dennis Alshuler, as well as a Santa Ynez midline violation, produced the points that gave CdM the opening game. The Pirates who received 31 kills from 6-5 junior ~ Witt, 18 from 6-6 senior Trace Agiri, and 10 from 6-4 sopbo~ore Chris Pena, rallied from a 10-8 third- game deficit. Coon's over-pass putaway forged a 13- 13 deadlock, but Wall, who later said he was "scared" when his team's fifth-game lead evaporated, sileQced the Sea King screams from the bleachers with an over- pass kill of his own for a sideout. "Then we didn't get it back until we ral- lied to tie in at 13 in the final game, but Santa Ynez executed down the stretch. "I thought Blair and Andrews played fantastic matches for us. Those were two seniors who really stepped up big time." Matt Bums (four kills), Coon (three), Marshall Rothwell, Mike Pliha and Steve Reese also contributed off the CdM bench. "I've got a good feeling it's coming around," Conti said of the program's r~vived reputation. Case in point Sunday was Dina Birch, an Estancia High product who won her first Adoption Guild Tennis Tournament in the mixed open division at the Newport Beach Tennis Oub with partner Desi McBride of the Calabasas Tennis Center. Birch, also a teaching pro at Calabasas, was able to share the glory with her two favorite people -mom (Mimi) and dad (Tom) - as she and McBride defeated Nicole Elliot and David Roditi in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3), to earn $1 ,250 each, the second-highest paycheck of the event's four fea- tured matches (women's, men's, 35-and-over and mixed). Birch, whose watched her sweat while she trained as a junior a t Mesa Verde Tennis Club and Balboa Bay Club Racquet Oub, put on a clinic for her Costa Mesa-based parents in the rru.xed open final of the Adoption Guild's 36th rendition. "It just goes to show, you don't just enjoy watching your kids play as juniors," Mimi Birch said, "you can enjoy watching them as adults." Birch, who dominated Elliot's side of the court, also reached the women's open final with Kirsten Smith. Birch -Smith lost to Gretchen Magers and Terry Hol- laday, 6-3, 7-6. Magers and Holladay, former top-20 p layers in the world, have three children each. Women's open winners received $250 each, losers $125. The low figure is because of the small draw. What action do you take? A • Ir all partner needed rrom you for slam were two ac~11 and a queen, surely North would have taken a slower route to game. We think there are fa r more hands that will not make 11 tricks than ones that will produce 12. Pass. EAST Pan A • Ir you selected two no trump, you need to brush up on basic bid- ding techniques. Your semi-unbal- anced hand could play better i n an eight-card major fit, which might be in hearts. Oid two heartR. Partner's two-over-one response promised a second bid, so you can always bid no trump l~ter. 1'he bidding hae proceeded: NORTH EA.CIT SOUTH W£ST I Q Put .Pau .obi 30 Put 7 What action do you take? A • To jump 11hifl. all.er you p&11sed an opening bid, partner eurely ha11 11 cards in the red 11uit8, so your epade honors are probably worth- less to North. Nevertheless, your (our-card support ror partner's sec- ond suit could be enough for game. Raise to four diamonds. Q. 5 • Doth vulnerable. as South you hold: •10654 OKQ954 ovoid •AK109 The bidding has proceeded: SOUTII WEST NORTH l Q PaH I• ? What do you bid now? A • In our opinion, three bids come into consideration: 1'wo spades, thrcf' spades and two clubs. Of these, we would rej ect two spades as.being too much or an underbid. Although two clubs might be the better action because of weak spade.'!, we would settle ror the jump raise to three spades rnther than risk U1e possibility that part- ner might pass two clubs.
