Movie house hopes to reel in mQne}r . .
•The foundation that bought the old Balboa Cinema
is working on raising $1.35 million to refurbish the
old theater and another $150,000 to keep it running.
By Jennifer Armstrong, Daily Pilot
Now that the Balboa Perform-

purchased the old Balboa Cine-

$1.35 million for refurbishing

Thal fund-raising goal would
cover the pure.base price of the

raise an additional $150,000 to
fund theater operations and

keep things going.
The foundation plans to
reopen the vacant movie house as
a 415-seat theater with new
'
SOWld and projection systeml, a
roll-down saeen, a revamped
orchestra pit and a refurbished
facade.
The group recently closed a
deal to buy the 77-year-old site at
707 E. Balboa Blvd. from the
Wortmann family, who purchased
it in 1995. The Wortm.aims decid-
ed to tum the theater over to the
foundation to make the renova-
tion a community project.
The theater became a trendy
hangout in the 1970s and '80s
with its midnight screenings of

the enormous force of the
Wedge and its conspicuous
beauty in captured moments.
During jetty reconstruction
in early 1997, society members
snagged poles that had with-
stood ep ic forces for 40 years .
Waves like "freight trams"
would break at pole nine in
the 25-to 30-foot range. And
now, pole nine's cut into fin -
ished pieces so people can
own a slice of something leg-
e ndary.
For m ost of the tJJlle those
poles stood duty, Ron "Romo•
Romanosky was photograph-

And so, he developed not only
on eye but a feel for its unique
characteristics. His photos
hdve been published <lround

this web site. They relate the
varying aspects of mood dnd
energy that sh.Ut with tune and
the seasons.
The Wedge on lhe "web"
should have a bookmark on

But with a name so memorable
and a n address so elegantly
uncomplicated, maybe that's
not ne~essary.

COSTA MESA -Residents
who live on the East Side are
continuing to look for ways to
keep outside motorists from tak-

A second, more involved pro-

make driving through the area
confusing, even for some of the

$30,000 on a study
that suggests traffic
has changed little in
recent years, despite the percep-

Some motorists use the neigh-
borhood as an alterna te route to
the Costa Mesa rreeway to a void
congestion on Newport Boule-
vard , making the area south of
17th Street between Irvine
Avenue a nd Mesa Dnve a traffic
and safety nightmare.
For about a year, d seven-

residents in the area hds been I

problems. But the y 10s1st any
recommendal!ons they subnul to
the City Council will be bast>d on
community input.
The devices would
be mstaUed on a 12-
month trial basis and
could be removed
easily iI the plan d oesn't work,
Butler said. Its progress would be
evaluated at the end of the trial
period to see if a reduction in
traffic had resulted.
Still, despite e fforts to resolve
the situation, some neighbors are
taking sides in what has become
d war between residents living
on 19th Street and others living
on nearby streets, committee
mE>mbers said.
Neighbors are concerned that
traffic diverted from 19th Street
will spill onto smaller streets like
Flower and Broadway. And, they
worry it might affect property
values and safety.

He even looked the part of the
young real estate Turk: crisp
white shirts, gray suits, conserva-

boyish looks.
Nelson bad a knack for the
busmess, closing deal after deal
after deal. All of which gave him
pause.
• J d ecided there were two
ways of thinking about my suc-
cess," said the soft-spoken Nel-
son, 35. "I could think that it's all
me, that I'm pretty special, which
would take me further down the
pride and arrogance path. Or I
could see if there's something
bigger at work here. To get our
attention, God can either bnng
us to our knees or bless our socks
off "
Nelson qwckly concluded his
socks were being blessed off, so
he did the only natural thing that
came to mind: repay God's favors
by Cdrefully studying the Bible
and getting involved in a church
-m his case, Mariners in New-
port Beach. The good times -
both financially and spiritually -
continued.
But then came the '90s. The
recession spoiled the real estate
party and put the once red-hot
market into a deep freeze. Nel-

many real estate superstars.

This is where the story gets
scary if you've resisted a We of
faith.
•My first thought when I
beard I was being la.id off was
the golden handcuffs that had
been on my wrists were now lay-
ing at my feet, and I'm free,•
recalled Nelson. •And then all
the fears came."
Not for long. His years of
Christian devotion kicked in. He
replayed Bible verses over and
over in bis head. Jeremiah 29:11
(•For I know the plans I have for
you ... plans to prosper you and
not to harm you, plans to give
you hope and a future ... •)
Philippians 4:6-7 ("Do not be
anxious about anything ... the
peace of God . . . will guard your
hearts and your minds ... ") and
Romans 8:28 (•And we know
that in all tllings God works for
good of those who love Him who
have been called according to
His purpose ... u).
He spent a week alone in the
mountains, thinking and praying
and developing a grid of values
that he'd run all future decisions
through. He and his wife Carrie
spent hours talking about the
next career move. He had job
interviews and explored buying
small businesses.
Eventually an unlikely job -
pastor of men's ministries at
Mariners Church (now the
Mariners South Coast Church) -
found him.
How unlikely? Nelson -who
never thought of being a pastor
-was a real estate executive
"She's dynamite,• said Vickie
Groskrevtz, one of Ayala's former
teachers at Costa Mesa High.
"Even though she's now a student
at Cal State Long Beach, and
sings professionally with Otis ·
Brown (formerly of the Drifters),
she still comes back to our school
to work with the younger kids,"
Groskrevtz said.
Ayala said that, although she's
not sure what her responsibilities
will be, "I'll be available to do
whatever the city of Costa Mesa
needs me to do.•

with no ministry experience, no
seminary training and an intense
fear of public speaking.
Plus, he had to take a.massive
pay cut. No more custom suits,
no more world travel, no more
racing power boats.
But Nelson doesn't see any
hardship whatsoever.
"There has been no price to
pay,• he says matter-of-factly.
"I'm in a more blessed, more
secured place than ever before.
We want for nothing. I've tasted
the world, and what God gives is
so much more than the world can
provide."
You wish Nelson was wearing
a rainbow wig and a John 3:16
sign around his neck. It would be
so much easier to dismiss him.
You want him to be wacky,
crazed, just plain off. After all, he
gave up everything we hold dear
-a prestigious career, a hefty
paycheck, a trip or two to
Europe.
But you look and look and all
you see is a regular guy, except
for a peacefulness about him
that's unnerving. You wonder if
he's really stumbled upon some-
thing.
He says be bas. It's not about
becoming a pastor, he's empha-
sizes, but about turning your life
over to God. The Lord will take
your life from there and do great
things with your own special tal-
ents.
Despite the obvious danger,
Nelson makes you want to inch
closer to the edge of that dread-
ed 10-meter. Scary.

MAKING THE GRADE :
Vacationers who find themsclvei

mer should bear in mind that travel-
ing down a steep decline carries the
potential of putting a car's braking
power in jeopardy. Instead of riding

ing their automatic transmissions
into a lower gear. That way, the
engine compression slows the car
and the brnkes can be allowed to
remain cool for any stops that may
he ahead . The shift to third gelllj
second. or even first gear on a road
descending downward should be
made on the basis of how steep the
grade is. The switch to the appro-
priate gear c:in pell the difference
betwee n having enough braking
power at the bottom of I.he hill to
make a stop and experiencing brake
fade, which is the loss of braking
efficiency due to excessive heat.
H!NT: Overheated brake drums and
dbcs can develop blue-spotting, a
condition that requires they be
replaced.
DRIFflNG TO ONE SIDE?

occur if the rear wheels are not

25. mph speed limit on the pave-
ment. That road attracts up to
4,500 cars each weekday.
Newport Beach's committee
will consider such ideas as speed
bumps and landscaped medians.
The city also will be asking the
Orange County Transportation
Authority to downgrade Santiago
Drive's designation from "arterial .
roadway" to local street. That
would allow the city to slow traf-
fic more on that street than
they're 'now allowed to.
. One idea thrown out at the

them tickets -seems to be fad-

expenslve, and even some of the
nt:!ighborhood's residents don't
favor it.
. ult would probably be tom
down by an enraged motorist or it
would cause so much outcry,
eyen from people who live here,•
Berger said.
Council.man Tom Edwards,
who will serve on the committee,
said he'd like to consider more
stop signs, speed bumps and
speed limit enforcement in the
area.
Councilwoman Nonna Glover,
also on the committee, said
though she's not "gung-ho" for
speed bumps, she hasn't ruled
them out.
Whatever the committee
decides, all sides seem to agree
on one thing: they don't want dri-
vers cutting through the residen-
tial neighborhoods to avoid back-
ups and stop lights.
"We have to try to divert the
flow over to the main thorough-
fares -the 73, the 55 and lrvine
Avenue," Edwards said.
BUDGET

$482,050.
The preliminary budget will
be available for review begin-
ning today.
Roeder said the city will con-
tinue to look for ways to cut
costs by exploring ways to pri-
vatize some services or provide
work with fewer employees, he
said.
Among the services being
.considered for privatization is
the operation of the Neighbor-
hood Community Center, street
striping and fire apparatus vehi-
cle maintenance.
Rbeder said the city's capital
improvement budget dropped
nearly 70% from the 1996-97
budget because major improve-
ments such' as the Harbor
Boulevard widening project
were in last year's budget.
Also in the budget is a
request by Mayor Peter.Buffa to
attend the United States Con-
ference of Mayors. Roeder said
the city cut back on travel
expenses for all dty personnel
several years ago, but City
Council members are consider-
ing whether to fund this year's
request.
At tonight's City Council
meeting, council members are
expected to approve a $6,600
contract for the design of a park
in the Shalimar Drive area. Ear-
lier this year council members
approved the allocation of
$200,000 for the purchase and
design of the park as a way of
improving the area for resi-
dents.
The council is expected to
approve a new ordinance to
regulate filming activities in the
city, plus amend an ordinance
regulating the sale of seasonal
products to prohibit the sale of
flowers. .
Additionally, the council will
review a draft study of citywide
traffic impact fees assessed on
new developments and renew
its contract for Community
Development Block
Grant!AOME Investment Part-
nership programs.
The meeting will begin at
6:30 p .m. at 77 Fair Drive.

Palmieri had also been convict-

show.
Even thougb over the past 18
months Minney began noticing
something was happening to his
business, he never suspected
Palmieri. The store had been bur-
glarized twice. Once the door was
kicked in and $10,000 worth of
merchandise stolen. The second
time, when $3,700 in cash was
stolen, Minney knew it was an
inside job.
"I thought it was a slump in my
business, but I thought I had lost

theft did not cross my mind.•
But Minney said he trusted
Palmieri because he had been a
customer of his, he treated him like
family, as he did all his employees.

employees, plans to bond all new
employees, and in the future take

$8,000 worth of marine merchan-

cal book Minney ever sold and
about 40 T-shirts.
Although Minney saw
Palmieri's Jeep in front of his store
late at night on nwnerous occa-
sions, the former psychiatrist
always had an excuse why he was
there. When customers told Min-
ney they saw Pabnieri put money
in his pocket, Minney said he
couldn't act on it unless he saw it
himself.
Palmieri is being held on
$150,000 bail in Orange County

at his Newport Beach apartment.
Police went to his apartment when
they suspected he was illegally in
possession of a gun because he is a

When police allegedly found
the gun at Palmieri's apart-
ment, they initially believed he
might be involved in narcotics
violations because of his prior
record, Newport Be ach Det.

Palmieri led police to two 8-foot

Westminster packed with
$150,000 worth of expensive
~arine merchandise from Min-
ney's store and a bag of $94,400 in

Internal Revenue Service seized
the $94,400 in cash because
Palmieri has $1, 157 ,245 in liens

uPart of the
focus I wdnted for this team this year had
u lot to do with respect,· said Conti, who.
though gravely disappointed to not have
won the school's first section crown since
1989, its third overall, had plenty of
praise for his team's accomplishments.
"When we found out we had a pretty
tough (playoff) draw, the kids were a lit-
tle d.J.sappointed. But we used that as part
of our motivation, as well. The -coaches
told the kids that no one gives you
respect. but this was a golden opportuni-
ty to go out there and earn it. And that's
exactly what they did.·
illustrative of Conti's comments was
some postrnatch reaction from Santa
Ynez, which has now won three straight
ClF Division IJI titles, amassing a 62-2
record during that span, which now
includes a 20-match winning streal,<.

Chip Fenenga, who knows all about the
Sea Kings' volleyball reputation, having
played himself at San Clemente High in
the late 1970s.
"Isn't there another Corona too?"
inquired Wall. referring to the Riverside
County community known more for pun-
gent livestock-induced odor than the cool
ocean breezes that bathe Orange Coun-

"We came into this match way over-
confident," continued Wall. who banged
a match-high 40 kills in his final prep per-

Struggle, in fact, may have been too
mild a description for this championship
match, the first title tilt ever lost by CdM.
"It was a great match, a great match,•
Conti repeated, eschewing redundancy
to
evoke the proper esteem . "It was
exactly like our last two matches, except
we came out on the opposite end of the
final score."
The scores favored each team at vari-

while the first and final games featured at
least one tie.
"It seemed like Corona won all the big
rallies early, then we started winning the
big points," Fenenga· explained.
The Sea Kings overcame six Santa
Ynez over-pass kills to claim first-game
leads of 4-0 and 11-6. But the perennial
Los Padres League champions pulled
even at 4-4 and closed to within 11-10.
However, Billy Messenger put away a
quick set for a sideout, and an errant
Pirate kill attempt, a kill and a stuff block
by Dennis Alshuler, as well as a Santa

points that gave CdM the opening game.

CdM, however, scored the next six

The Sea Kings appeared to have

I °Set, 5•5,
But Briggs-Bowen broke
Man Son Hing with four inaed-
. ible returns of serve, two by
Briggs to ignite the rally.
Bowen's powerful two-handed
.• backhand return ol serve was
smashed up the middle for
game point, then Bowen held
for the win, the tandem's first in
the Adoption Guild.
"Mike saved his best lenn.i$
for the important moments,"
Bowen said, referring to Briggs•
forehand returns of serve in the
11th game, both whacked down
the line.
Briggs, who played in the
men's open in the Adoption
Guild for.the first time when he
was 11, won his fourth title, his
first since 1990 when he won
the second of two titles with nevor Kronemann
Briggs and Kronem.ann, still
playing doubles on the pro tour,
were partners for six years (two
at UCI, fow-on the circuit). They
also won an Adoption Guild
championship in 1988, the year
of the event's largest draw
(nearly 1,100 teams).
But Briggs' first men's title
came with Ross Case in 1984,
when Briggs was a 15-year-old
CdM freshman.
~it seems like every match
here in the finals is Uke that,•
Briggs said ol the hard-fought
three-set match.
Briggs, CIF cham~n in
1985 as a sophomore. also
reached the men's open finals
once and semifinals twice in the
Adoption Guild, in addition to
his four titles, bis first with
Bowen.
Briggs, who now lives on Bal-
boa Island, returned lo the area
last November after a two-year
hiatus in Portland, where he
worked for Adidas in bis first
full-time corporate job. Eventu-
ally, the great Pacific Northwest
weather persuaded Briggs to
come home.
Bowen. a 1990 Estancia
graduate who still travels the
pro circuit (currently ranked
150th in the world in doubles),
and Briggs each won St,750,
the larvest payday of the Adop-
tion Cuild's four featured
matches. Kaplan and Man Son
Hing pocketed $750 each.
For Jowen, who grew up
playing at Mesa Verde TC, the
winnings are nice, considering
what it's like traveling the world
on the challenger circuit.
Bowen bas been experienc-
ing much success thus far in
1997. though, capturing a dou-
bles title at the Croatian Open
last month and reaching the
finals of two other cballengers.
one in Prague, the other in
Bratislava, Slovakia. All three of·
those appearances in the finals
came with different partners.
Bowen, who started th;:J:ar ranked 250th, ~layed sa · es

University), but says no more
when it comes to the lower lev-
els of pro tennis. "If you're still

Bowen said. •No more satellites
(only challengers and ATP Tour

By Richard Dunn, Daily Pilot
NEWPORT BEACH -Parents
never stop cheering for their cb.il-
dren on the tennis court, even
well beyond the junior circuit.
Case in point Sunday was Dina
Birch, an Estancia High product
who won her first Adoption Guild
Tennis Tournament in the mixed
open division at the Newport
Beach Tennis Oub with partner
Desi McBride of the Calabasas
Tennis Center.
Birch, also a teaching pro at
Calabasas, was able to share the
glory with her two favorite people
-mom (Mimi) and dad (Tom) -
as she and McBride defeated
Nicole Elliot and David Roditi in
straight sets, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3), to earn
$1 ,250 each, the second-highest
paycheck of the event's four fea-
tured matches (women's, men's,
35-and-over and mixed). Elliot
and Rod.iti won $500 each.
Birch, whose watched her
sweat while she trained as a
junior a t Mesa Verde Tennis Club
and Balboa Bay Club Racquet
Oub, put on a clinic for her Costa
Mesa-based parents in the rru.xed
open final of the Adoption Guild's
36th rendition.
"It just goes to show, you don't
just enjoy watching your kids
play as juniors," Mimi Birch said,
"you can enjoy watching them as
adults."
Birch, who dominated Elliot's
side of the court, also reached the
women's open final with Kirsten
Smith. Birch -Smith lost to
Gretchen Magers and Terry Hol-
laday, 6-3, 7-6.
Magers and Holladay, former
top-20 p layers in the world, have
three children each.
Women's open winners
received $250 each, losers $125.
The low figure is because of the
small draw.
Birch, meanwhile, a former
Daily Pilot Athlete of the Week
who graduated from Estancia in
1990, has been bot of late, tea.m-
ing with teaching pro-colleague
McBride to reach the mixed open
finals in April in the Scouts On

By Richard Dunn, Daily Pilot
NEWPORT BEACH -Even
with less weight, big Tim Downey
continues to bulk up in the popu-
lar men's 35-and-over division in
the Adoption Guild Tennis Tour-
name nt, as he did Sunday at
Newport Beach Tennis Club.
Downey, 6-foot-4, 250 pounds.
won his third consecutive title in
the division that is featured by
Adoption Guild officials with a
12:30 p.m. start.
Downey, 15 pounds lighter
than last year when he won, once
ag'ain teamed with Sashi Menon ,
this time beating Kevin Arm-
strong and Eric Quade, 6-1, 3-6,
6-3, before an estimated 2,800
fans.
In 1995, Downey won with
Mike Fedderly, the Corona del
Mar High standout from the
1970s, then he won again last
year with Menon, a longtime
Davis Cup player for India.
-Downey and Menon. both of
Laguna Niguel, became the first
back-to-back Adoption Guild
champions in the open divisions
(same partners) since Tim Pawsat
and Rick Lea ch in 1982-83.
"The third set was just a battle
of wills." said Downey, 37, who
split $1,500 with Menon, while
each loser got $500 in the fifth
year of the 35-and-over bracket.
"They played the big points
well when the chips were down,"
said Armstrong, 35, a former pro-
drcuit player who plays at Pal-

strong had the advantage of
youth. but Downey and Menon ,
46, had been there before and the
former USC standouts stepped up
in the third set.
"I can't believe it, three years
in a ·row,• Downey said. "The
com petition is tough every year.
because there's so much talent in
the area. We beat this team (Arm-
strong-Quade) last year in the
quarterfinals, and this year they
get to the finals, so it doesn~t get
any easier."
Menon, a three-time All-
American at USC who came to
the United States from India to
play collegiate tennis, led bis
team with smooth returns. But the
Adoption Guild final was nothing
compared to a Davis Cup tie in
the 1970s against Australia.

• ANSWERS TO WEEKLY DRIDOE QUIZ
Q. 1 • As Sout.h, vulnerable, you
hold:
•Vo6d \'7A l08785 0 OQ92 •AG
The bidding has procileded;
NORTH EAST SOtrrH
•• Pan JQ
•• Pus ?
What action do you take?
A • Ir all partner needed rrom you
for slam were two ac~11 and a queen,
surely North would have taken a
slower route to game. We think
there are fa r more hands that will
not make 11 tricks than ones that
will produce 12. Pass.
Q. 2 • Neither vulnerable, as
South you hold:

A • Ir you selected two no trump,
you need to brush up on basic bid-
ding techniques. Your semi-unbal-
anced hand could play better i n an
eight-card major fit, which might be
in hearts. Oid two heartR. Partner's
two-over-one response promised a
second bid, so you can always bid
no trump l~ter.
1'he bidding hae proceeded:

30 Put 7
What action do you take?
A • To jump 11hifl. all.er you p&11sed
an opening bid, partner eurely ha11
11 cards in the red 11uit8, so your
epade honors are probably worth-
less to North. Nevertheless, your
(our-card support ror partner's sec-
ond suit could be enough for game.
Raise to four diamonds.
Q. 5 • Doth vulnerable. as South
you hold:

The bidding has proceeded:
SOUTII WEST NORTH
l Q PaH I• ?
What do you bid now?
A • In our opinion, three bids come
into consideration: 1'wo spades,
thrcf' spades and two clubs. Of
these, we would rej ect two spades
as.being too much or an underbid.
Although two clubs might be the
better action because of weak
spade.'!, we would settle ror the
jump raise to three spades rnther
than risk U1e possibility that part-
ner might pass two clubs.

Your right-hand opponent opens
the bidding with one club. What do
you bid now?
A -I f.you are a born gambler, you
might venture a hil{h-level preempt
in spade11. I f it doesn't make, it
could deter the opponents from
reaching a makable game.
However, we opt for a quiet one
spade. If the bidding dies ther e, you
are surely at the right level.
Regardless or how the auction pro·
ceeds, plan to mention spades again
if given the opportunity.
Q. 4 • Neither vulnerable, as
South you hold:
The bidding has proceeded:
WEST NORTH EAST SOUTH
•• 2'7 2• ?
What. do you bid now?
A • This South hand must be the
perfect fit for partner. 1t is impossi-
ble to conceive of a vulnerable two-
level ovcrcall I.hat will not offer
excellent play for game -if not
slam! Bid four hearts. The problem
will come if the opponents perse-
vere to four spades, but you Ahould
clearly prefts on to five hearts.
