port Beach protesters hauled their
signs to the San Bernardino
County courthouse Monday,
where James Lee Crummel -
appearing on a video screen -
pleaded not guilty to 15 counts of
child molestation involving three
underage boys.
Prosecutors will try for a sec-

to escape two years ago because
of a statute-of-limitations issue.
Crumm.el, who was appointed a
public defender, was arrested Fri-

Cucamonga. ,
Thirteen of the felony counts
stem from the first boy, and one
count stems from each of the oth-

City's proposed flower
ban turns a bit thorny
By Susan Deemer, Dally Pilot
COSTA MESA -A plan to
change a local city ordmance and
ban seasonal flower vendors fell
apart after City Counal members
couldn't agree on the wording of
the amendment.
The issue evolved following
Valentine's Day, when a Vlrtual
~war of the roses" erupted
between local flower shops and
an outside vendor selling cheap-
er flowers.
An amendment postponed
two weeks ago sought to prevent
outside temporary flower ven-
dors from cutting into seasonal
sales revenues, which local
·r
flonsts say is their "bread and
butter "
But Monday's proposal did not
reflect the original intentions,
confusmg a diVJded council that
both supported and opposed the
amendment.
The proposal is not intended
to affect vendors who sell season-
al agricultural products such as
Christmas trees, pumpkins and
strawberries.
The decision to amend the law
came after about a dozen local
floral shops banded together
complaining a seasonal flo~r
vendor was cutting into their
business. The group asked tba
city not to issue permits for the$e
types of sales in the future.

All went s · · gly
at annual Fish Fry
• Only two complaints
were lodged and relatively
few problems reported at
the event, which drew
between 30,000 and
50,000 people.
By Susan Deemer, Daily Pilot
COSTA MESA -After batter-
ing up schoqls of fish and navi-
gating the resurrected Fish Fry
Parade down Harbor Boulevard
to Lions Park, organizers of the
52nd annual Fish Fry pronounced
the event a success.
Attendance was estimated
between 30,000 and 50,000 and
police reported relatively fe w
problems, the most notable being
a frustrated motorist who
allegedly tried to run down a
patrol officer.
City Councilman Gary Mona-
han said Uus year's event was
probably one of the best because
the parade -which had fallen by
the wayside the last two years -
brought a lot more people into
the city.
Nearly 6,000 Icelandic cod fish
dinners were sold during the fes-
tival while some 8,000 hamburg-
ers and 7,000 tacos were gobbled
up, said Lions Club member
Hugo Hunziker, who supervised
about 52 volunteers preparing
and serving the meals. The
busiest times were Friday and
Saturday nights and Sunday after
3 p.m ., he said. ·
Fish Pry organizers say they
have been trying to contact Josh
Parker, who won the 1997 Jeep
Wrangler.
However, despite its success
this year, there were rumors that
next year's Fisb Fry will not be
held in Lions Park and moved to
the Orange County Fairgrounds
because an adjacent parking lot
is being developed into a retail
plaza later this year. The parking
lot accommodates about eight to
10 buses and at least 100 vehi-
cles. 1
But Lions Club President Phil
Evans dispelled rumors about the
demise of the event. Plus, he said
moving the event to the fair-
grounds would be too expensive.
"I don't know how that (rumor)
got around," Evans said. "Hey, it
(the Fish Fry) has been going on
for 52 years; as far as I know it
will go on into the year 2000 (and
beyond)."•

About this time, the Santa
Ana Police Department began
to notice that someone was
stealing Mercury automobiles
every Saturday night. Strange-
ly enough, the cars were
returned later that same night.
It was a nuisance to Mercury
owners but no great law
enforcement problem. No red
lights. No sirens. Just a few
unhappy Mercury owners who
were without their cars for a
few hours .. These thefts of
Mercury automobiles became
so regular that the Santa Ana
cops began to label the thief
"Mere."
Finally, one night they
caught Mere. It was John. He
was returning the Mercury he
had taken back to the place
from which he had taken it.
John didn't own a car. So,
when be began to court Mary,
he would steal a Mercury
every Saturday evening, take
her to a movie, then return the
Mercury near the place from
which be had taken it.

Although lacking a criminal
background, ·somehow he had·
accomplished the rather arcane
accomplishment of hot-wiring
a car. Of course, in those days
cars were easier to steal than
today's models lquipped with
elaborate, anti-theft devices.
It happened that John's last
name was Perkins. So, the
Orange County courthouse
press corps, all three of them
-Bob ~eivit of the Long
Beach Press Telegram, George
Hart of the Orange News and
Clennel Wilkinson of the Santa
Ana Register, now the Orange
County Register -began to
call him uPerk the Mere." Lat-
er, the Miami press corps came
up with "Murph the Surf" for a
local thief. Unhappily, Perk the
Mere didn't take off like
Murph the Surf, so poor John
languished in obscurity.
I suggested to Joe Nickertz,
the local Mercury dealer, that
Mercury might like to put on a
national publicity program
about the man who only stole
Mercury cars, but the Mercury
people apparently didn't cotton
to that priceless suggestion.
No one was very mad at
John, so he appeared before
me on a couple of counts of joy
riding, I gave him some time in
the county jail to be served on
weekends and at that point lost
all track of him.
I hope he and Mary married
and lived happily ever after -
and saved up enough for their
own Mercury.

was also featw'ed in Cal State

"There is a distinct possibility
that things will go downhill from
here," Adams said.
City Manager Kevin Mwphy
said the same agreement also
made the salary increase contin-
gent upon the city's economic situ-
ation. The city invoked that clause
in not upping salaries that year.
"They have talked about litiga-
tion far a long time," Murphy said.
#But I'm not sure what would be
accomplished by that."
The city proposed its final offer
early this year, and city officials
note it would make Newport
Beach police the second-highest
paid officers in the county. Associ-
ation leaders say it also creates a
second tier of lower-paid police -
which could drive away new hires
-and slashes vacation time by
two days per year.
Sworn rank-and file officers
now make an average yearly
salary of $52,879 in wages -
which translates to $86,09'1 includ-
ing benefits, Mwphy said. City
officials also say they're offering a
3.2% increase in retirement bene-
fits, but police union leaders say
that barely accounts for more than
inflation.
"It's the same gallon of gas -it
just costs more,• said association
president Steve Martinez.
The stalemate in negotiations
led the association to ask the New-
port Harbor Area Chamber of
Commerce for support. Then last
week, the group took out ads in
local newspapers urging citizens
to call City Council members in
support of police.
The campaign triggered a trick-
le of calls to council members and
also prompted a comrmmity group
to speak out against the police
position. The Corona del Mar Res-
idents Association, chaired by for-
mer Mayor Phil Sansone, sent a
letter to city officials supporting
their stance in negotiations.
"The board is quite adamant
that the d ty hold pat,• Sansone
said. #We think the police do a
good job, but they're a little bit
demanding."
The residents group's letter
cites the Police Department's 11 o/o
pay increase over the past three
years and the dty.'s cummt con-
tract offer, which includes a 5.6%
salary increase the first year. The
group calls the police association's
recent ads ·a disinformation pub-
licity campaign." to that, Adams said simply that
all the facts are public record.
•0ne thing that is apparent is that
they drew their conclusions with-
out any discussions with associa-
tion leadership," be said.
Sansone said Newport police
shouldn't expect the same pay as
police in dtles such as Anaheim
and Santa Ana, whlcb have Jaraer
general funds and more crime. No
other residents' groups have taken
a side in the talks.
Mayor Jan Debay estimated
that she has fielded a.bout four
phone calls from residents in
response to the police association's
advertising campaign.
The police ad claims the dty cut
the police force by nearly 20%
since 1991, but Debay MJI that's

because that meant giving up pre-

problem: getting the classes ahe
wanted.
"I had to wheel and deal to get
into classes,• the New York native
says. "But I managed. When I'm
this sweet, little old lady, and I
look up at you so pleasantly, I get
the classes I need."
Her college years weren't
always easy, though. In her first
semester, her car broke down -
which forced her to take public
buses to campus every day. Then
her mother, who's now 82, had her
second stroke. She considered
quitting, but instead whittled her
schedule down to two days of
classes per week.
Then she had to make it
through her hardest class, Biology
of Aging.
"I had never taken a. biology
class," she says. "Boy, did I have
problems with that"
• She went on to skate through
hand on the genitalia of the
naked victim, the complaint said.
The boy reported the allega-
tions to the police on Sept. 1,
1995.
In May 1988, Crummel per-
formed similar sex acts on a sec-
ond and third boy, the complaint
said. Those victims went to the
police on Sept. 11, 1995, the com-
plaint said.
A pre-preliminary hearing is
scheduled for June 10, with a pre-
liminary hearing on June 12,
lrager-Ovorak. said.

her three internships -at an

gerontology office and the Costa

tinues to hold down a job counsel-
ing students in Orange Coast Col-
lege's admissions office.
Baker was tint attracted to the
idea of working with senior citi-
zens when she managed the Casa
Bella apartments on Park Avenue
for three years. Now she hopes to
go into senior information and
referral services.
•Hopefully I'll get a job," she
says, her voice squeaking with
excitement. •If not, I'll just create
my own agency."
She will, however, miss hang-
ing out with young students -
who came to accept her, even if
they had their doubts at first.
"Because I'm such a character,
that change~ once I opened my
mouth and started participating,"
she says. "Now I'm just one of the
gang."
Newport Beach picketed outside
the courthouse. Darleen Savoji,
who spearheaded the effort, said
her aim was ~to let the public
know that we're still out there."
"The pressure's still on." Savo-
ji said . "We still need everybody's
help.•
Crummel became the third
Orange County sex criminal to
have his whereabouts publicized
under the controversial Megan's
Law when police posted filers last
month describing him as a high-
risk offender who preyed on boys
between the ages of 9 and 16.

tt doesn't make sense. Newport Beach is one
of the finest communities in Southern California.
Yet City Management hos reduced the number
of police officers-nearly 20% since 1991-and
is now proposing a serious cut in police
benefits.
Reductions like less vacation time than
Orange County's average and creating a
second class of new officers as well as
dishonoring previous contract commitments.
The City's proposed police employment
contract will drive the best officers to other cities
while attracting bottom-of-the-barrel
substitutes. Meanwhile. Newport Beach's
population hos grown signifi~ontly and the City
collects more revenue today than ever before.

of local hign school stars.
Estdncia graduate Matt
Johner will e nter bis senior year
at the Uruversity of Kansas with
an edge over sophomore Zac
Wegner fo r the starting
quarterback position.
The left-handed Johner
started the first seven games last
season for the Jayhawks, and
eight all together, under Coach
Glen Mason, who has since
moved on to take the head
coaching position at Minnesota.
Johner accumulated 1,232
yards and had a completion rate
of 51.9%, while firing 10
touchdowns. He passed into four
interceptions.
His best outing was a
268-yard performance against
Texas Tech.Johneralso
connected on a 77-yard pass
versus Nebraska.
The Jayhawks went 4-7 last
year, while taking a 2-5 mark in
the Big 12.
Kansas is now under the
mentorship of Teny Allen. Allen
coached at Northern Iowa before
joining the Jayhawk family.
Johner's competition, Wegner
is from Platt Cii Missouri.
Former Newport Harbor
High and Orange Coast College
standout Mike Freeman has
seemingly gotten the better of
the University of California's
1996-97 starting fullback Marc
Vera.
Freeman, who is the nephew
of Corona del Mar High's
football coach Dick Freeman,
impressed the Bears' rookie
coach, Tom Holmoe. According
to a spokesperson for Cal's
athletic department, the
coaching staff was pleased with
the way the junior picked up the
offense and his performance in
the spring.
A Santa Rosa native, Vera is a
6-foot-3, 225-pound senior who
would join five other offensive
starters for Holmoe. Regardless,
the Cal coaches predict plenty of
playing time for Freeman.
Freeman, who stands at
6-foot-2 and weighs 240 pounds,
was an All-CIF tight end for the
'Sailors and went on to post 156
rushing yards, a touchdown, and
19 receiving yards for Orange
Coast his sophomore year.

make goals and get there."
The Gentrys' journey began about
five and a half years ago on an
• airplane to Southern California from
: Houston. Chris was moving to Costa ! Mesa to pursue his ambition of
• becoming a rap star. A month after
• Ricca met him on that plane, she
: moved from Houston, too.
By that time, Gentry bad already
established himself as a successful
skater. He won his first competition
in Paris when he was 17 years old.
He captured the National Skating
Assodation's top rank in 1990. But
be quit to rap.
"We'd been togetheT seven
months and I hadn't even seen him
• skate," Ricca said. "I was blown
:· away. He had real taleqt. I told him
: that if he didn't go back, he'd regret
• it later on."
Gentry did go bac:.\(, but found
: himself in a predicament.
• "When I was ranked fourth in the
. .
DON LEACH I OAJLY PILOT :
world (last year), we'd work all day,
from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. and the closest
ramp was two hours away," he said.
"I would only practice about once a
month before a competition."
In the 1997 Wmter X Games. an
ESPN-sponsored event will feature
alternative sports like skateboarding,
snowboarding, in-line skating,
climbing and street luge this
summer, Gentry placed ninth in the
crossover competition.
Costa Mesa's beach volleyball standout Vallnda Hilleary digs the ball out of sand. :
When Tony Hawk's Birdland, a
ramp in Irvine, recently opened,
Gentry saw his practice time
increase.
"I'm practicing about three or four
days a week, am doing yoga,
stretching, watching tapes, .. he said.
to get past that seventh slot.
"My goal is to play competitively every
weekend. l'm not one of the top kind who
are striving to play in the Olympics, I just
genuinely enjoy fierce competition," she
said. "To win money is a bonus. To finish
high is a bonus. This keeps me in
phenomenal shape. Instead of going out
and running and doing the stainnaster, l
get to go out and play and compete.•
•I have confidence in the new things
I've learned," Hilleary said. "It is really
just a matter of using that confidence
now."
At 33, Hilleary says she'll play until her
body wears out. Even though the average
age of competitors on the WPVA tour is 30,
she said she wishes she was younger .
"I don't have the Olympic dream, partly
because I'm a little old," she said. "This is
more of an experience kind of sport. I
didn't even play on the beach until I was
28."
Her age may keep her out of Olympic
contention, but it was yet another of
Hilleary's professions that took her to
Atlanta where beach volleyball was
initiated as an Olympic sport. Hilleary
served as the massage therapist for Nancy
Reno, one of the tour's top players who
paired with McPeak at the Olympics.
•(Massage therapy) is another income,·
she said. "I've personally cut back with
window cleaning and am doing more
massage."
She has put her third occupation to use
on the tour, as well, by providing therapy
for a handful of American players at
Southern California stops on the
world-wide FIVB tour .
Ricca video tapes his practice
sessions so he can •floorboard" at
home.
Floor boarding is a simulated
practice technique.
Gentry trains for a 45-second run.
He'll complete three runs and judges
drop the highest and lowest score.
"I plan every run and work on
new tricks, which are called lines,·
be said. "I'm constantly thinking
about it. From the end of one contest
to the beginning of the next, I'm
thinking of what I'll be doing."
Gentry said that each run is
carefully choreographed, not unlike
an ice-skating or a gymnastics
routine.
Gentty got his first skateboard, a
plastic job from K·Mart. when be •
was seven. He wouldn't get ott of it,
he said. So, his parents bought him e
better one when he was nine.
"I just practiced and pradlced
and ended up getting another one,
and another one," he said.
"l used to ride my bike four miles
to my friend's so we could get picked
up to go to a (skating) park," he said
that went on until eventually bis
parents eventually built a half-pipe
foT him in their backyard.
Their support seems to have paid:
"He's just supeT big and smooth •
when he's out there," Crum said. ·
Oum, also a native of Houston, has
been competing against and friends:
with Gentry for 13 years. "I knew ·
him when he wore Ultra Hot T-s~
and spiked his hair."
After a workday at KingdOII\,
Gentry hea.ds to the music stu~o. .
where he is putting together his first
album with the producers of rap
groups NWA and the late Easy E.
for his own record label,
Kingdom/Skatecraft records.
Unlike a lot of rap, Gentry's lyrics
are about skateboarding, outer space
and achieving goals.
Gentry always speaks of the
collective "we." He means himsell
and Ricca.
"We haven't been apart for more
than a few hours in three and a half
years," he said. The two, who have
been featured on ESPN and in
skateboarding magazines, are rarely
seen apart, rarely photogTaphed
apart and never interviewed apart.
•It might seem weird, but we're
happy." Ricca said. .
The two will undoubtedly be seen
together at the X Games. More than
400 athletes will be competing in 27
events that will be aired by ESPN,
ESPN2 and ABC's Wide World of
Sports.
"They're really opening (the
sport) up to a world market,• Gentry
said. "It's making people more aware
that this is a natural sport, that you
have to pre.pare and that it takes
skill.
"It's not just a bunch of kids, of wild punks causing trouble.•
After the X Garnes, the Gentrys
head to Europe for a series of trade
shows where they will display their
castle, along with a "skateship" and
a steel-sided "satellite.•
"We've put all of our heart
into it," Gentry said of the
constructions, which he hopes to turn
into reality .

How declarer &r a defender tack·
lea the hand can he very revealing.
Consider this deal from the recent.
European Pairs Championship.
Since North-South were playing
five-card majors, North had an easy
raise to two liearts over partner's
opening bid. South simply hrushrd
aside East's intcrforence and went
strai~t t.o game, an eminently rea-
sonable decision.
West duly led t.he aix of clubs,
and East's eight wall captured with
two cards in that suit.
The stage waa set for an endplay.
Declarer cashed t.he ace and king of
spades to strip Weal of everything
but diamonds, then ran the eight of
diamonds to the t.en. The forced dia·
mond return away from the J 7 into
declarer's A 9 tenace limited
South's losers to one trick in each·
euit except for spades.
