Buffa to attend mayors
meeting in Bay area
• Annual convention will feature an appearance
by President Clinton, Vice President Gore.
By Susan Deemer, Daily Pilot
COSTA MESA -While
many Orange County cities
have cut back on travel expens-
es, Costa Mesa officials say the
city can afford the $1 ,500 it will
take to send Mayor Peter Buffa
to the prestigious annual United
States Conference of Mayors in
San Francisco.
It's been seven years since
the city sent its mayor to the
national conference, but it was
Buffa who last attended in
Chicago, said City Manager
Allan Roeder.
Buffa's trip, scheduled for
June 20-24, is estimated to cost
$1,500 to $1,700, including a
$700 registration fee, hotel, air-
fare and $40 per diem stipend,
Roeder said.

Feds: Don't move Latino students
• Office of Civil Rights says no way to district's plan to
shuffle students in 'Joann rectangle' out of Adams.
Leece accuses government of meddling.
By Michelle Terwilleger, Daily Pilot
NEWPORT-?vffiSA -A plan to
move nearly 200 students in the
"Joann rectangle" from Adams
Elementary to the neighborhood
Wilson Elementary School has
been rejected by an Office of Civ-
il Rights attorney, school officials
said.
Newport-Mesa Unified School
district officials were told that
changing school boundaries for
the predominately Latino neigh-
borhood would not be in the best
interest of the children, Superin-
tendent Mac Bernd said.
The school district has a volun-
tary agreement with the federal
office concerning the neighbor-
hood, stemming from a U.S.
Department of Education ruling
that the district discriminated
against minorities in 1995 when it
changed Adams Elementary
School boundaries. The effort to
shift students from the largely
Latino Joann Street area was
denounced by some as racist.
School trustees reinstated the
original boundary Lines in
response to the ruling.
This year, board President
Martha Fluor constructed a plan
that would move students to Wil-
son from Adams to make up for
an anticipated drop in student
population at Wilson caused by
the opening of Rea Community
Center as an elementary school.
"We wanted to make space in
the Estancia zone,• Fluor said.
During a Monday afternoon
telephone conversation, Fluor,
Bernd and other district officials
were told by an Office of Civil
Rights attorney that under the
district's agreement, the Joann
Street boundaries should not be
changed even though students
there live much closer to Wilson
than Adams.
"It all hinges on ethnicity," Flu-
or said. "Their assumption is it's in
the best interest of students to be

Country Club owners terminated
negotiations with Toshiba Senior
Classic management, the two
sides are reportedly back at the
bargaining table and it appears
the Senior PGA Tour event will
stay in Newport Beach, after all,
or become a casualty of the golf
industry.
International Sports and Event
Marketing, which manages the
event, was in arrears $25,000
because of a food and beverage
bill, a payment default that led to
the club's decision on May 10 to
dissolve negotiations for a con-
tract extension.
On Monday, country club own-

ment in full from International
Sports, which had been disputing
the invoice.
In addition, it appears Toshiba
is unwilling to move its event out

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 4, 1997 • our adversaries are onIY human
A while back, I wrote a col-umn about the irritation I
felt at athletes who
thanked Jesus Christ at some
length in interviews after win-
ning a sporting· contest. I grant
the possibility they might do the
same thing if they lost, although
I never heard that happen.
Anyway, the most articulate
and thoughtful response I
received to that piece came from
Newport-Mesa school trustee
Wendy Leece, whose education"-
al views I have criticized, often
harshly, in this space.
She wrote me, in part: "We
(Christians) don't mean to be
combative, confrontational and
irritating. After all, we're sup-
posed to represent Jesus in all
we do. It's interesting to me to
know how we are perceived.
"We set out to do something,
compete to win, write a book,
walk 10 miles, whatever. At the
beginning, it seems totally
impossible, but after it's done,
on reflection, we have to
humbly admit the Lord helped
us overcome the challenge ...
(so) when asked, we gladly give
Jesus Christ the credit first."·
This is one that no matter
what I say here, I'm probably
going to lose. Let me just sug-
gest that the roots of the irrita-
tion lie in the implication of
assumed universality, in the
speaker's presumption that all
Christians share the same view
of Christianity (we don't), in a
deep and abiding suspicion of
evangelism in any form, and in
the corollary conviction many of
\

us share that such feelings are
better dealt with privately than
publicly.
But theological debate really
wasn't the reason for bringing
this up. Rather it was to get to
the final paragraph of Wendy's
letter in which she suggested
"meeting for coffee" so that we
might "learn to understand each
other and help make a more civ·
il dialogue in the future. tt
Now civil dialogue is some-
thing I can really get behind, so
Wendy and I spent a couple of
hours over coffee a few weeks
ago, shortly after she had sur-
vived a fearful experience of
choking on some food at a
school board session. We got
acquainted and talked a little
about our personal lives and
exchanged reading material -
the book she gave me is regret-
tably piled with a half-dozen
others from last Christmas on
my night table -before we got
. -\:\' u.11 te1 i.;
into the heavy stuff.
I'm not going into that here
because this was a conversation,
not an interview. But it had the
profoundly affirmative effect of
humanizing Wendy Leece to me
-and, I hope, vice versa -and
thereby allowing me to like her.
I still think a preponderance of
her educational convictions are
full of beans and not in the b&st
interests Qf our children. And if
her philosophical soul-mates
who have the Orange and West-
minster school districts in tur·
·moil by imposing ultra-conserv-
ative political solutions on edu-
cational problems try to mov·e
into Newport-Mesa, I'll assured-
ly take them on in this space.
But if Wendy and I do battle as
a result, I know now that it will
be over ideas and not personali-
ties. Which is the way it should
be.
A few weeks before Wendy
and I connected, I had lunch
with my libertarian friend and
long·time correspondent, Don
Hull, and we arrived at a similar
place. We exchanged ideas
without changing any basic
views. But we parted with
respect and friendship.
It occurred to me after these
meetings how lucky the readers
of the Pilot are in the market-
place of ideas. Many newspa-
pers (lbe Register is a classic
example) print only opinion
columns that agree with the
political and philosophical thrust
of the newspaper. In the Pilot,
readers can get a half-dozen dif-
ferent approaches to public
issues and then make up their
own minds.
U all of this leads more to
confusion than clarity, let me
recount a story that might sug-
gest a solution. A good many
years ago when there was an
enormous and bitter debatf}
about whether we should test
atomic weapons in the atmos-
phere, I was assigned by a
national magazine to interview
the two leading protagonists in
this fight in ah effort to cast
some light on it for a lay public.
So I spent a day with Edward
Teller, a blunt, give-no-quarter
physicist who told me at length
why testing in the atmosphere
posed no danger to the health
and well-being of mankind and
was essential to our protection
from attack.
The following day I spent
with the elfin, white-haired
chemist Linus P9uling. He
explained to me at equal length
why such atomic testing would
probably do us all in.
I listened to him in growing
frustration and finally said: "I've
spent the last two days with two
Nobel prize-winning scientists
who have given me totally
opposite answers to the same
fundamental technical question
So who in hell am I supposed to
believe?•
And Pauling looked at me
with those twinkling, mischie-
vous eyes and said: "Who did
you like the best?"

would not elaborate.
Crummel became the third
Orange County sex aiminal to
have his whereabouts publicized
under Megan's Law when police
posted fliers last month describing
him as a high-risk offender with
multiple convictions who preyed
on boys between the ages of 9 and
16.
On Jan. 28, 1990 Crwn.mel
reported he found a set of charred
bones while hiking in a remote
area near the Ortega Highway.
Last year, investigators identified
the remains as notter's and
opened a murder investigation,
but it wasn't until last month that
police revealed Crummel 's link to
the dead boy.
For 1\"otter's family, years ol
interminable waiting and haunt-
ing uncertainty might be drawing
to a close.
"I'm happy as hell," said John

Under current school bound-
aries, Latinos make up half of
Adams' student population and
87% of Wilson's student body,
according to the Orange County
Department of Education.
Ruor said she agreed with their
philosophy to an extent but had
other concerns.

decide whether to recommend
the death penalty. Attorneys on
both sides said they expect this
phase of the trial to continue for
another two weeks.
Outside the courtroom, Gum-
lia said the defendant came from
a "dysfunctional family. While

brother, only moments after learn-
ing o1 Crummel's arrest •rm hap-

ly, I'm happy for all the families
(Crummel) bas hurt. If my broth-
er's death and all this coming to
light saves one kid from being
abused, that means the world."
lrotter, who lives only a block
and a half from Crummel's Ima
Loa Court home in Newport Crest,
said he was shocked to learn a
convicted sex offender found bis
brother's bones.
"That's too weird," he said.
"You'd have to be an idiot not to
put two and two toge ther. I just
want this guy put away."
Trotter's mother, Barbara
Brogli, who now lives in Colorado,
said she became convinced Crurn-
mel killed her son after seeing his
record. But she does not know
what motivated him to report find-
ing the bones, she added.
"I don't know if be wanted
attention," she said. "I don't know
why he did it. Most (se(C predators)
want to get caught, deep down .... I
said.
lhlstee Wendy Leece said she
was upset that the federal agency
would not allow the district to
make its own boundary decisions.
"It's not local control,• Leece
said. "lt's the federal and state gov-
ernment telling us bow to run
things here. We have a solid,
upper-middle-class white situation,
but then we also have ethnic
groups that need to be represented
and balanced throughout the dis-
trict. ..
Leece said she did not agree
with the need to create racial bal-
ance at each school.
"Race and language don't mat-
ter. Color doesn't matter. Ethnicity
not an excuse, it should engen-
der some "mercy," Gunilla said.
"It is very clear that he came
from a highly, highly dysfunc-
tional family, a family that would
produce aberrant behavior, if not
deviant behavior," he said.
Earlier this week, Famalaro's
71-year-old mother testified she
told her sons that masturbation
would drive them mad and that
she once hid in the back seal of a
car the defendant's brother, War-
think him finding Jamey's remains
is too bi7.arre. •
After the bones were identified,
police said they initially suspected
that executed serial killer William
Bonin might have been the killer,
raising the possibility that Trotter's
family would never know what
happened to him. But Brogli said
she never gave up hope.
"I've always known or felt that
someday we would know who did
it," she said, adding, "I want to
know how my child died.•
Brogll said she will move to
California soon and attend every
day of Crwnmel's trial. She said
she hopes to confront him face to
face. "How can he do this to all
these little kids and put parents
and families through all these
years of not knowing?• she said.
Police arrested Crummel Fri-
day at bis Newport Crest condo on
suspicion of the Big Bear molesta-
tion charges and searched for evi-
dence linking him to 1\"otter. No
a.rraigrunent date has been set on
the murder allegation, Lohman
said.
doesn't matter. It's going to the
neighborhood school that's the
best," she said. "The principle of
the neighborhood school concept
has always been where the core of
education is. H
Chris Ludlow, a parent at
Adams Elementary, said she
thought it was unfortunate that
Adams could lose some of its spe-
cial activity rooms under current
housing plans because of
increased enrollment while Wilson
would have extra space.
"It severely impacts (Adams')
ability lo provide enrichment pro-
grams," Ludlow said. "We have

ren, was taking on a date.
On Tuesday, the yictim's
father, Dennis Huber, said the
defense's case did not make him
feel sympathy for Famalaro.
The Huber family on Monday
night put flowers on the spot where
Denise Huber disappeared. Her
father described it as "another
anniversary that's very hurtful."
"To th.iitk that six years ago
last night was the last night we
saw her alive," he said .

Although many Orange Coun-

be valuable.
Santa Ana Mayor Miguel A.

Santa Ana City Manager

its mayor for the past three years

"(Pulido) has found they are
very good conferences and finds
them more valuable than the

However, offioals from small-

Newport Beach, Huntington

Laguna Beach and Garden Grove
-said they don't have the funds
to attend the mayors conference.

guided the Santa Margarita High
girls during the 1995-96 season,
after a one-year stint as head girls
coach at Pacifica in 1994-95.
Bettencourt, who played at
Woodbridge Hign, before end-
ing his career at OCC, brings a
23-28 career record as a head
coach, though his two seasons
culminated in the CIF Southern
Section Playoffs and his Pacifica
squad shared the Garden Grove
League title.
The Sailors' third coach in four
seasons replaces Bob Du.kus, who
stepped down after compiling a
34-23 record in two seasons, each
of which ended in the section
quarterfinals.
"I'm fired up about it," said
Bettencourt, a Fountain Valley
resident who began bis coaching
career in the Woodbridge boys
program and was a Costa Mesa
boys assistant to Coach Billy
Brewer, as well as a former aid to
ex-Estancia girls coach Russ
Davis. •This is a great place to be
and I'm looking forward to it.•
Bettencourt, who sp ent last
season as an assistant at Ocean
View, began working with the
Harbor players Monday and
plans to use the rest of the semes-
ter to familiarize himself with per-
sonnel, including top returners
Katie Dunne, Alyssa Paul, April
Ross and Kristen Urban.
"We're a little low on num-
bers," said Bettencourt, who said
bis association with fonner New-
port Coach Jerry DeBusk, wbo
now leads the Santa Margarita
boys program, as well as a strong
recommendation from Santa Mar-
garita Athletic Director and cur-
rent girls coach Rich Schaaf,
helped him gain the Harbor job.
"But I know there are a lot of
athletes on this campus and I
want to get them excited about
basketball. I want our ·players to
work bard and have tun. I think a
lot of people expect Newport to
be down, since it lost a lot to grad-
uation, but I see a lot of positives.
Woodbridge and Santa Margarita
are the two teams to beat in
league and it may be a bit of a
struggle. But I definitely think we
can get to a point where we're
competing with them."
Bettencourt plans to maintain
the Tars' trademark man-to-man
defensive approach, though he
said he will need more evaluation
to determine an offensive style. Ryan Bettencourt

Ward tells of being wined and
dined at the Rose Bowl
festtvit1es, of staying in the posh
Arrowhead Hotel in San
Bernardino.
;_ But two disappointments were
lagged to his first Rose Bowl
~xperience.
• With 1:30 left in the game,
phio State's field goal kicker
sent a 30-yard boot through the
uprights to seal a 17-14 win for
the Buckeyes and blemi.9h Cal's
perfect record.
. The other disappointment
occurred before the game. The
Bears were out on the field
inspecting the turf.
•1 was near the end zone and
I realized that there was no grass tn the end zonel It was just dirt
painted green!" Ward laughs.
Ward's senior season sent him
to the Rose Bowl again, a loss to
Michigan. For Ward, though, an
upset win over Washington in
Seattle marked the most
memorable time that season.
"I remember Waldorf giving
us a talk. He never gave pep talks, I mean, there were war
veterans in there who bad seen
it all. Was he going to give them
a pep talk?" he said. "But be
said that there would be 23
series of plays and ball of them
would be offensive and half of '
them would be defensive. Our
team captain got it in his mind
that we had to hold them for 13
series. And we did."
Ward said that his team's
defense stopped Hugh
McElhanney, an eventual pro
football Hall of Pamer, on the
3-yard line three different times.
After Ward graduated, his
heart never left Berkeley.
He spent time at school at
UCLA while waiting for a
commission in the Navy. He
went to Korea and the
Philippines, and spent a night
counting the bodies of French
soldiers who died in Vietnam.
He worked in the real estate
business, but his heart was
always beating for the Bears.
"The guys that were on the
team were very loyal to the
university. My closest friends
were deeply involved in one
way or another, and not just
wtien they needed something,
but all the time," Ward said.
Ward joined his college
buddies in several endeavors for
the university. He spent nine
years on the alumni council, two
years as a vice-president at-large
·and became a member of the
boa.rd of trustees for the
Berkeley Development Group,
a contingency that raised $400
million for computer and
biotechnical science programs.
"That's a pretty great
accomplishment, and the best
thing a lot of us have done," he
said, "and football really started
all this. It was the camaraderie
and the team work."
· He also joins his fellow
teammates to raise funds to
expand opportunities for Cal
coaches with a group called
'Pappy's Boys."
Ward is retired, but leads an
active lite with his wife Martha.
Along with playing golf and
traveling, he still works in
developing and mortgage
banking.
"I'm hanging in there but not
backing off," he said.
