If I were queen, I'd give this couple the crown
I don't know the owners of the
horse that beat Bob and Bev-
erly Lewis' Silver Charm in
his bid for the Triple Crown. But
I'm confident the Newport Beach
couple would beat anybody if
there were a trophy for down-to-
earth sweetness.
The Lewises deserved to have
a horse go down in the record
books as the 12th ever to win the
Kentucky Derby, Preakness
Stakes and Belmont Stakes. They
lost that chance when Silver
Charm lost to Touch Gold by
three quarters of a length at New
York's Belmont Park on Saturday.

COSTA ~1ESA -An angry
mob trampled a 66-year-old lady
and a referee came to blows Wllh

basketball game Sunday at C'osta
Mesa H.!gh School.
Though reports conflict about
who threw the first punch, partici-
pants agree the tension Oared dur-
ing the game when referee Ralael
Marquetti, 34, restrained 12-year-
old player Marcus Bordedux when
the boy clashed w1th another pldy-
er over a rebound.
Around 5 p .m , alter the Santa
Ana team lost the game, Susan
Bordeaux, 39, the boy's mothN,
went to Marquetti and d emanded
an apology for having touched her
son, witnesses said.
The referee refused an apolocn
but agreed to 91ve Bordeaux tu-.
name. Then Derek Bordeaux, 20,
the Lakers' coach -who happens
to be Susan's son and the player's
older brother -entered the
scene, angry about the perceived
mistreab'nent of his brother.
Marquetti clauned Derek Bor-
deaux swung first. Susan Bor-

between the two men, clauned
Marquetti swung first.
However it happened, Mar-
quetti fell to the floor, and a mob of
angry parents swarmed down
from the stands onto the baske t-
ball court. Marquetti remembered
being kicked but sustained no
serious injuries. League officials
broke up the melee.
Police say independent wit-
nesses corroborate the claim that
Bordeaux threw the first pwich.
In the rush, Georgia Perteet of
Santa Ana -who is Susan Bor-
deaux's mother -was knocked
onto the ground, where someone
fell on her leg, police said.
Perteet was treated at Hoag
Hospital for her injuries and
released.

1J School trustees told to
tick to original plan of
using Davis Adult Educa-
tion Center as an elemen-
tary school.
By M ichelle Terwilleger, Daily Pilot
NEWPORT-MESA -The
school district doesn't need any
more middle schools, and using
:)avis Adult Education Center for
1 middle school instead of an ele-
:nentary would only prolong the
eventual opening of another ele-
mentary.
S7M2JJ
SLUGGER
That was the message Super-
~ntendent Mac Bernd sent
trustees in a memo late Monday
iltemoon to prepare them for vot-
_ng at tonight's meeting on the
boundary changes that would
result from reopening Rea Com-
munity Center and Davis as ele-
mentary schools for next school
year.
MARC MARTIN I DAILY PILOT
Mariner's Elementary student Hoang Vu takes a big league swing during a physical edu-
cation class Monday afternoon.
Trustees unanimously voted
May 27 to reopen the sites as ele-
111entaries, but many parents
turned out at community meet-
~gs last Thursday to express
their desire to have new middle
schools instead. Some trustees
have said they will consider the
idea.
In lus report, Bernd responded
to racial, boundary and other
issues parents raised at the meet-
ings.
Newport may have extra
cash in 1997-98 budget
The biggest changes in stu-
dent body ethnicity under the dis-
trict plan would be at Killybrooke
and Sonora elementaries. The
percentage of white students at
Killybrooke would increase from
42% to 54%, while the number of
Latino students would decrease
from 39% to 31 %.
At Sonora, white students
would decrease from 31 % to
22%, and Latino students would
increase from 42% to 51 %.
Using Davis as a middle school
would not be a pennanent solu-
tion to keeping boundaries intact
or avoiding "white flight"
because, eventually, Presidio
would need to be opened as an
elementary, Bernd wrote.
"ln addition, the district would
have reopened two schools, Davis
and Presidio, when it only needs
one," according to the report.
Opening Davis as a middle
school would also cost more:
$750,000 in annual costs com-
pared to $300,000 in annual costs
for an elementary.

Coundl members could also
elect to sink part of that extra
money into any of several sup-
plemental requests, or wish-list

Newport Beach police DARE

Costa Mesa police Lt. Ron Smith.
Smith said Marold might have

selling them.

Not much is more depressing
than the Great Depression
T he Great Depression was
a dreary time. Paint every-
thing gray. There was an
attitude of utter hopelessness.
We have all seen those grainy
black and white news pictures
of endless soup lines in large
eastern cities. I have always
wondered why there were no
women in those lines. Didn't
women get hungry, too?
Balboa, being a honkytonk
resort, was spared much of the
visible horror of the Depression.
We had no soup lines, no hag-
gard men selling apples on the
comers. Nobody jumped on
your running board at the stop
signal and wiped your wind-
shield for a nickel or dime. It
happened in Los Angeles but
not here. The merchants of the
town got along pretty well, at
least until the NRA, the National
Recovery Administration that
regulated fair business prac-
tices, came into existence.

the buried man, but the dancers
were pitiful, haggard beyond
description, just tottering around
ih the last stages of exhaustion.
I guess they just staggered
around until they collapsed, and
the last couple on the floor won.
The man on the flag pole and
the buried man had some enter-
tainment value. You had to be a
sadist to en1oy those poor crea-
tures staggering around the
dance floor.
But that was the Depression.
It is small wonder that those of
us who went through it consider
it was the event that had the
most lasting impression on our
Lives. May'it never come again.

Still another new Irrelevant Week event -
"The Celebration of Underdogs• -bas been
added to the incomparable if Wiconscious and
outrageous Newport Beach Last Man festival
this year.
Irrelevant Week x.xn, running June 18-23
in nwnerous area locations from the Hyatt
Newporter and Balboa Yacht Oub to Disneyland
and the Newport Center, will not only toast the
22nd Mr. Irrelevant, Anny quarterback Ronnie
McAda, and the Green Bay Packers during Super
Underdog Sunday at the TWin Palms restaurant, but it will
also introduce and pay tribute to the top 15 ~unsung hero
underdogs• nominated by organizations all over Orange
County. ·
fill some glaring gaps for this year.
The Newport-Balboa Rotary, Costa· Mesa
Downtown Kiwanis, Orange Coast Exchange
Club and Newport Lions are among those who
will be represented by their favorite dogs.
It's not too late to get into the act, which you
can do by calling the Irrelevant Week office
(263-0727) and nominating your own unsung
hero underdog. Although the limit is supposed to
be 15 underdogs besides the underdog of them
all, Mr. Irrelevant XXll. episode founder Paul
Salata, the former San Francisco 49rs head-banger,
said event officials will even increase the final totaJ of
honorees to 50 or more if there are that many worthy dogs
biding in the neighborhood, and that's how all this nutcake
·circus got started in the first place.
