SERVING THE NEWPORT -COSTA MESA COM.MUNmES SINCE 1907 MONDAY, AUGUST 30, 1999
Don't believe
the hype -
every time
I t comes as no swprlse
that bad boy Oennis
Rodman was once again
in the news this week.
Whether it was getting
arrested at a Newport Beach
bar or blasting his former
team, the
Los
Angeles
Lake.rs,
the former
basketball
player can
attract
attention .by
merely stepping outside bis
door-and sometimes it
doesn't even take that
Newport Beach police
have repeatedly received
calls from media outlets
about Rodman rumors. It
wouldn't be an exaggeration
to say police get at least one
call a week from hungry
reporters savonng over the
possibility of another Rod-
man exploit.
"They hear he's been in
an accident or been in a.
fight,• said Sgt. Mike ·
McDermott. •Our typical
answer is •he's doing fine,
we don't know anything of
Except for last weekend,
of course, when reporters as
far away as Europe were
clamonng about his arrest on
suspiaon of public drunken-
ness.
A FAMILIAR FAa GLARES
AT THE CAMERA
It that woman in the new
Mentos candy commercial
looks familiar, you know
your '50s film divas. It's
Laguna Hills resident-and
Pilot magazine cover girl-
Jeanne Carmen.
In the commercial, she
plays a high society lady
leeving a black-tie event. As
she waits for a valet to bring
around her car, she spots a
pregnant young woman and
her date. She allows the cou-
ple to cut to the front of the
line.
Then, a valet zooms up on
a motorcycle. The girl jumps
on with her date, hikes up
her dress and pulls a helmet
out from underneath her
clothing. As they speed off,
she pops a Mentos and
laughs.
Carmen is left glaring in
their dust.

Police put end to 'puppet'

NEWPORT BEACH-There is
a reason why there aren't any
street entertainers performing at
either of the city's two piers.
i Ari ordinance prohibiting peo-
i, pie for conducting •business" or
asking for money for their acts
has kept performers out of town.
Last weekend Warren Moore
Jr. found out that police were seri·
ous about the ordinance the hard
way when he and his puppet
were cited at Newport Pier for
operating without a special·
events permit. P.ohce confiscated
the 53-year-old homeless man's
puppet for evidence.
•1 am a homeless entertainer,•
Moore wrote irl a note to people
who have helped bun. •When the
police took my sloth puppet away,
they took my only means of sup-
port.~
Depending on the l egal avenue
the Orange County district attor-
ney's office decides to take,
Moore could face up to a $500
fine, which he says he can't afford.
Police know Moore-they
have seen bun before perlormirlg
for children. Sgt. Mike McDer-
mott said police officers have nev-
er seen Moore collect money for
his act Besides lus puppet, a golf
ball and $3.68 were recovered,
according to a property report.
McDermott added the depart-
ment has received 10 to 12 com-
plaints about Moore using pro-
fanity at. beachgoers and in front
of the children
·we were trying to accommo-
date him, but there have been
some problems,• he said. •tte's
10Sisted he hasn't done anything
wrong•
Police have had relatively few
problems with street performers
congregating along the beaches.
The few peopl e who have tried to
get money from beachgoers have
ceased once they've been con-
tacted by police.
As for Moore's caged puppet,
he won't be getting his sloth any
time soon.
•He won't get the puppet until
the case is resolved,• M cDermott
said.

they were
strong in
the league finals, none or them
have yet to take the next step to
the CIF or state meets. And the
re.;t of the roster is full of young,
unproven runners. 1
•Nevertheless, Slf:nner ex-
pr~ssed hls desire m gomg to the
state meet with thls team, and the
. team might have e nough talent to
pull it off. But for that to happen,
Sumner needs a runner to take it
to-.the next level. "l'm looking for
romeone to step up,• he s111d.
· For now, Sumner is trying to
assess what kind of team he has.
.. "I'm looking at them to see
where we're at right now.• Sum-
ner' said. "I would like to see
them get more mental toughness.
1 would like to see most of them
tougher. That's why we have
tougher competitions early, to
make them tougher."
r;>espite all the uncertainties
smrounding the team, the Sea
Kings should be one of the
favorites m the Pacific Coast
League. With three solid experi-
~ced runners, they are one of
tPe deeper teams in the PCL. And
the younger runners, like sopho-
mores Dustin Hoffman and Mark
Pomrampz, look promising.
Also, the league they moved to
does not have one standout team.
Nerthwood, with the Irvine run-
ners, will be tough, and so will
University. But Costa Mesa is in
transition, and each of the top
teams face some questions of
their own.
Sumner might be looking for
an.sWers for his team, but it won't
take a big one to win the league.
GOing further, on the other hand,
~ teqwre a definitive one.

NEWPORT BEACH -It's common knowledge
that if you have a successful cast, then you should try
to bring them back to repeat the succes . How else
to explain Scream 3, the Utah Jazz or the new Bee-
tle. There's a certain comfort in sticking with the
same formula that worked before.
And yet, Corona del Mar High's girls cross
cowitry coach Bill Sumner refuses to remain confi-
dent. "I can't say we should finish here, if this is our
best team. or if we're the favorites," he said. "I can
only say that we have to be compared with other
teams we're competing against. Our only goal is to
get to the state meet."
Ah yes, the State Meet. The Sea Kings won llie
Pacific Coast League and the CIF D1vision IV title
Jast year. And then came the State Meet, where
CdM lost by one point to Nordoff, a team it beat ear-
lier in the year.
Hence, it seems strange for Swnncr to say that
oruy reathirig the state meet is CdM'.s goal. The Seo

What tk:tion do you lake?
A -First, let us make 11 clear that v.c
hate the Unuswl Jump to Two No
Trump (takeout for the minor suits)
with a passion -il is misused and
abused and much too revealing.
Therefore. we would not employ 11
on this hand, especially since there is
a great ~scrcpancy rn the suits and
an outs1lle defensive trick.. If you
choose 10 act, ovcrcall two dia-
monds . .West's on~inal pass ~1ves
that action a margin of safety.
Q 3 -Both vulneruble, as South you
hold:

A -In our opinion, 11 1'1 simply a
choice between two hid a Jump

hand, that show'i al least a four·card
fit for operier's suit anJ is forcing to
three of that suit) or a leap to four

What do you bid now?
A • What an ugly situa1ion. You have a full opening bad but no reason 10
suppose that three no trump is the
right pl~e. Since ;.using partner's
suit with a void is out or the ques-
tion, rebid your good six-card suit
and see how the bidding proceeds.
Your real problem might come on
the neitt round.
Q 6 -Neither vulnerable, as South
you hold:
•7J 17 AQ82 o A95 •8762
Partner opens the bidding with one
spade. What do you respond?
A· Do you prefer overbtddrng or
underbidding? You have 10 points
inc ludi ng IWo aces, a fair hand.
However, your doubleton spade is a
naw. If you make 8 standard IWO.
over-one response. the biddina could
easily get out or ti.ind. Therefore, be
content with a quiet response of one
