For Co ta Mesa resident Andy Seidner, tt was a fas-

shiny, metallic chrome, the rodr of a clean engine, the
head-turning attention. .
He wanted a hot rod oh-so badly growing up. It was a dream
be couldn't afford until now.
Seidner, the president ot a Cdtpet bu~iness, has. 15 classic cars

work it takes to get their vehicles looking flawless for days like

I'm guesi.ing the article was

The problem is not oile'that is

the powerlessness and frustration
the family felt in dealing with it.
She went to a school that
requued uniforms, so t.hdt isn't
the easy answer. After that fami-

That is why I applwd the article,
which lets us dll rerognw.:! rnr·

to do when we suspt.-ct d prob-

. For. this reason, I was amazed
when some people thouqht the

NBCC's Anderson honored
•He's voted Southern California PGA Golf
Professional of the Year, for the second time.
NEWPORT BEACH -Newport Beach Country Club Presi-
dent Jerry Anderson has recelved the Southern Califoptla PGA's
. highest' honor as the 199~ Golf Professional of the Year, the sec·
ond time in his distinguished career that Anderson has earned
the award. ·
-Anderson also won the award in 1985. just prior to the club's
reclamation project. Newport Beach plays host to the Toshiba
Senior Classic on the Senior PGA Tour, the only PGA event in
Orange County. '
•Tue (golf) industry has changed a lot in the last 14 years and
I think I have changed along with it,• Anderson said. "I'm not the
traditional golf professional in that 1 don't have the day-to-day
interaction with the membership. I chose a dillerent path in the
golf industry and elected to take on more responsibility. Thank-
fully, I have had success as I've attempted to create.more value
for our membership.•
In January, Anderson entered the Daily Pilot Sports Hall of

• Forever Harbo~'s great bull elephant, Glenn Davis

Do'IJ CAN'rnEU.
Dolr Plot
H arbor area football tit fans (Tom the '40s
will long remember
the late Harold "Hal" Sheflin
as a legendary fullback who put
Newport Beach on the gndiron
map.
He was the All-CIF fullback
to lead Harbor High to its
first-ever varsity championship
and its first entrance into a CIF
playoff. Actually, it was the '42
• small schools CIF tiUe contest.
And he would also lead the
Tars up against a future Heisman
llophy winner and All-American
,from West Point Military
Academy -Glenn
Davis of Bonit4 High
School.
Sheflin ran wild
against Bonita
and had Newport
leading , 6-0, at
halftime. He kept
the incredible Davis
constantly controlled
until a curb injury to
his heel forced him
out of the game.
Only then did
Davis find the
freedom to run freely Hal She Oin
up and down the
field. And did he ever. Bonita
wound up with a 39-6 conquest
of the Sailors and the
championship.
1ime Magazine approached
Davis after he had enrolled at
Atmy and asked him to name
the greatest player he ever faced
in football. Davis ·qwckly replied,
"Harold Sheflin of Newport
Harbor High School." ·
Sheflin was a four-year
letterman at Newport and
earned All-Sunset League
honors all four years. He earned
the ball 362 times for 2,231 yards
and averaged 6.2 yards per carry.
It often reqwred four and five
rivals to pull him· down once he
was on the run.
His other remarkable talent
was punting. He often punted
more than 70 yards.
He was also a member of the
Sunset League championship
basketball .tedm in 1941.
He could have advanced to
great marks in college, but a
World War Il lung injury limited
his action. He did play at Santa
Ana Jl:mi:Gr College and drew
lofty prdise from the coaches and
players, but the wounds suffered
in the Great War proved too
much to overcome.
He was talented in other
sports, but football was the game
wluch served bull elephants, and
Sheflin was the
perfect fit.
His older brothers,
the late Bob, Frank
and Bill, also starred
in football during
theu time at Harbor
'High.
"I remember the
first time I ever
saw him in the
bclck:field," said Bill
Neth, a supenor
lineman on the '42
champ team. "He
looked so polished, '
even then. It looked
like he was bom to
carry the ball.
"He ran like Larry Csonka,"
said bis brother, Bill. "He was
one of the best I've ever seen," •
said Roger Neth, a member of
the '42 team and a former Costa

Neth also praised the late

COSTA MESA -There was
no place to go but up for the 1998
Orange Coast College football
team after suffering through a
dismal two-win, 1997 campajgn.
After giving up an avtftage of
!35 points per game, then OCC
Coach Bill Workman focused on
strengthening the Pirates'
defense, particularly, the in the
line. .-
The Pirates started the season
by hononng assistant coach and
Daily Pilot Hall of Farner Paul
l3riggs for 50 years of coaching
during halftime of their season
opening loss to Fullerton, 34-24.
That defensive focus started to
pay off for OCC in week tWo.
OCC took its act on the road
and after falling behind 16·0 in
the first half, came back with an
unpressive 20-16 win over Sad·
dleback, shuttmg the Gauchos
out in the second half.
Qudrterback Jared Flint was
solid in the win, completing 15 of
30 passes for 219 yards and two

21-3, in the third quarter and held
on to win, 28-17, giving the
Pirates their hrst two-game win-

. ·The winning streak came to a

COSTA MESA -U Friday's scrimmage against a
very big Santa Monica City College means any.
thing, look for Orange Coast College's football team
to be enforcing the aggressiveness, rather than
being the target or it. -.
•1t•s what we're going '"to do to be successful.•
Pirate Coach Mike Taylor said. "This year, when you
play us, we're gonna take you on.~
Playmg in one Qf the toughest commwlity college
conferences in the nation, OCC ~ have to play
smashmouth football with some of the best in the
state.
In fact. half of the Pirates'·opposition is in the
Southern California's Top 10, mcluding four from
the Mission Conference Northern Division.
. •1 think we'll have a better chance to compete out
. there with those big guys in our division,• Taylor
said •As far as switching to the Northern Divison last
year, it really doesn't make that much of a differ·
ence. It's just a matter of playing them at the begin-
ning of the year or at the end."
With the season-opening game against Fullerton
less than a week away, Taylor and OCC's sopho·
mores will look to redeem themselves from last
year's 34-24 loss to the Hornets, a game they felt
they should have won.
"You sophpmores remember that we felt we let
that game slip out of our fingertips," Taylor told his
players after Saturday's scrimmage. ,
With ,the countdown underway to Saturday night,
here's a position-by-position look at the 1999 Bucs.
Quarterbacks: Sophomore Jared Flint will be
leading the Bucs' offense once again after an up and
down rookie season.
Last year, Flint threw for over 1,500 yards to help
lead OCC's attack and Taylor believes that with his
improved ann strength and focus, he's due to have a
tremendous season.
•After last year, Jared and the rest of tlie sopho·
mores are determined to prove what they're made
of,• Taylor said.
Flint was a redshlrt transfer from the University of
Indiana before last season· and was one of the top
quarterbacks in Orange County while playing at
Irvine High.
In 10 games for OCC, Flint was 121 for 242 with
nine touchdowns and eight mterc~ptions as a fresh·
man.
Backing up Flint, will be OCC's starting punter
Eddie Johnson (Newport Harbor High) and ~Sh·
men Richie Wessman and Tommy Karaffa. · J
llec:elven: David Castleton and Tony Leone look
to be on the other end of a majority of Flint's passes.
Castleton is a redshirt transfer from Brigham
Young Universlty after four solid years at Mater Dei,
where he helped the Monarchs to two football
national. championships.
Leone played for OCC in 1997 and along with
. freshmen tight ends Ben Fredrickson and Gerard
Fane as well as runnmg back Raymond Obrel com·
ing out of the backfield, Flint Will have an array of
targets to choose from.
•The best thing about our receivers is that they
all have excellent hands and they do a great job of
running sharp routs,• Taylor said.
Running backs: OCC has a solid blend of quick·
ness, size and agillcy in the backfield with the iivo df
Ohrel, sophomore James Dawkins and treshlltbt
Stephan Boka.
Ohrel bas increased his size and speed during the
offseason and after last year's learning season, the
Newport Harbor standout looks to lead the Pirate
ground game.
Ohrel rushed for 155 yards, Md 266 yards receiv·
ing and. 266 yards off of kickoffs for the Pirates last
year. •
•Ray is not your prototype running batk, • :Taylor
said. "Not only has h1s speed increased, but he bad
the power and the ability to catch balls out of the
backfield. Our entire backfield (Flint, Ohrel, and
Dawkins) are back from last year.•
The Pirates also have some hole-produong full.
backs in the form of sophomores Devon Griffin
(5-11, 235) and Jimmie Banks (6-0, 247). ..
Offenstve llne: Perhaps one or Taylor's biggest
quesbon marks coming into the season was going to
be the offensive line.
•Their biggest job out there is to try to protect
Flint,• Thylor said. •ounng the preseason. they've
done some good sparring with the defense al!d I
think as a whole, they're getting stronger.•
Leading the line is 6-', 328-pound Jesse Chagol·
la. He is a transfer from Cerritos College, so he
knows what to expect at this level.
•He's been in the wars and he can help our
younger guys on what to expect," Taylor said.
Along with watching Flint's back, the line will
also be iJ,l.charge of operung up holes for the run-
ning backs and ln Friday's scrimmage, there were
holes big enough to drive a tnlck through.

On the offensive side, run-

(Newport Harbor High) had a
rather explosive start to his
sophomore season, taking the
first snap from scrimmage 70
yards for a touchdown.
"I was actually a little ner-

"A ny time you break open a big
play like that so early, you have
a t~dency to think that it's
going to be an easy day. Fortu-

Ray today."
Ohrel used his speed, agility
and power to score his second
touchdowri bf the day, from 20
yards out.
•Games like this, we're look-

players line up in the right spots

On that note, sophomore

After a shaky first series of
plays, sophomore quarterback
Jared Flint showed tremendous

verge of putting up some big
numbers for the Bucs.
"Jared has a tendency to
force things. when he starts to
feel pressure. instead of just let-

What do you bid now?
A· Tilere arc two uncomfortable
choices available -one no trump ,
and two clubs. The latter suggests an
unbalanced hand; the former says you have a spade itopper. Of the
1wo, we think the spade stopper is
·less important lhan tbe dislribu1ional

Partner·opcns the bidding with one
heart. What do you respond?
A • Your band is clearly v.'Orth two b1<1$, so this is not the hand where
you suppress your tiv~-<:ard spade
suit to raise partner's hearts with •
three-crud uppon. Respond one
spade. Depending on developments,
your real problem could come on the .
next round.

Partner opens the bidding with one
spade. What do you respond?
A. Regardless or sy•m, there 11
only one response -a raise to two
spades. Those who.play a fon:mg no
truinp style and choose that .ction
so they can rebid two hearts are ask·
in! for trouble -why pcaume hearts ' will be better contract when an
eight~ fit is known to ex~?
Q 5 • Neither vulnerable, as South
you hold:
•AK o KQJ 107'3 o Wei •KQJl
WEST Pue
A • We believe that a player who
preempts at the three-level should
not have an ace in a side suit. 'There·
fore. to bid anything other than four
hearts is nOl on ly pointless, but risks
losing a sure game.
Q 6 • As South, vulnerable, you

1 <> Pass 1 + Pass
2• Pass ? What is your opening bid? What do-you bid now?
A • The choice lies between two
underbids, two spades and three
clubs, and an overbid, four clubs.
TI1c problem with the jump to four
clubs is that bypasses three no
trump. which might be your only
game. TI1c two uftderb1ds obviously
A • If you elect to open one club, a
response or one spade or one no
tNmp will leave xou with an awk·
ward problem. Life will be simpler
1f you open the bidding with one ~
diamond, leaving younclf with an
easy two-club rebid.
