THEN ...
In August 1994, Metro Pointe at South
Coast in Costa Mesa was merely a vision in
the eyes of Newport Beach developer
George Argyros and his development
company, Amel.
The plan was to build a 21-acre shop--
ping. entertainment dJld business mecca
across the street from South Coast Plaza
and Crystal Court, with massive retail
giants facing the San Diego Freeway.
The 395,000-square-foot heavily land·
scaped retail center was to be built in a
classical architectural style with earth-tone
colors and arches.
Developers envisioned walkways to
South Coast Plaza and Crystal Court from
Metro Pointe and aimed to create a center
·that appealed to the masses.
Tenants of Metro 'Pointe were to mclude
Nordstrom Rack, Best Buy electronics, ·
Barnes & Noble Booksellers, The Contain-
er Store and Old Navy. Coffee shops,
restaurants and a 12-screen Edwards
movie complex soon followed.
In the beginning, questions arose as to
the need and eventual success of another
shopping center in the area. But many
were excited and spoke of the center's
anticipated success early on.
NOW ...
Besides generating close to $2 million a
year in revenues for the city, Metro Poip.te,
most agree, has found its niche in the
seemingly saturated'retail market.
"It has been very successful," said Cos-
ta Mesa Mayor Gary Monahan. •My kids
love the theater. -
Smee it attained full occupancy in May
1996, the plaza has nearly tripled its sales
and has become the No. 2 revenue-gener-
ating shopping center in the city next to
South Coast Plaza, said-a representative for
the city. ·
As Orange County res1dents continue to
embrace the center, so do city officials and
busmess owners. ·u is just a beautiful venue,• sa.Jd Costa
Mesa Chamber of Commerce President
and CEO Ed Fawcett. "Jt peaked in 1996
and has been climbing ever since."
One controversy that existed in the ear-
ly days of the centefs inception was the
placement of a traffic signal at the main
entrance on South Coast Drive. Residents
of the nearby Greenbrook neighborhood
feared they would be unable to exit thetr
neighborhood m a reasonable manner.
Upset and determined, Greenbrook rest·

Bill Morris, director of public services for

But things had become
sweaty. Within two months,
I'd lost my two biggest clients
through corporate mergers.
So, hey, why not? I wrote an
overlong blurb about myself
and entered the columnist
bake-off. Eventually, I won.
My mother was ecstatic
because she could finally
understand what it was I did
for'a living.
I was hired to write four
columns a week. Though I'd
lived in Newport for 25 years,
I was not what you'd caU
well-connected around town
and finding good column fod-

Bill shortly afterward also
hired Jerry Kobnn, which got
him into a spot of trouble. Jim
Wood had been writing a col-
umn before Bill came on
bOdrd. Then I came, then Jer-

After about four months,
Bill called me in one clay, told
me what a great JOb I was

Of course, what didn't occur
to me until later was that I ·
was voluntarily cutting 25%
out of my rice bowl.
While Bill and I don't
always agree on issues, the
only real argument we ever
had came when the 'paper
decided to restrict its cover-
age to Costa Mesa and New-
port. No more Huntington ,
Beac\l. no Fountain Valley, no
Laguna, no Irvine.

The '48 team still holds the

leaders were '48 grads Frank
Hamilton, pitcher, and Bill
Weatherwax, catcher. The coach
was the late Wendell Pickens.
Many of the class athletes
were members of the '49 track

its sp\endid perf onners were

last four minutes. A deflected
punt was recove red at Newport's
10-yard line and the Saints
finally won, 14-12.
The astounded Saints left with
ample praise for the gritty

Newport." St. Anthony featured·
the future All-American fullback

The Saints voted to place
Harbor's great end Bobby

No matter how his future football aspirations-turn out, former
Estancia High and Orange Coast College product Mark Mollner final-
ly aehleved the ultimate team honor in the sport. · Molln~, who finished his college career at the Univemty of Hawaii
last fall, recently helped the Hawaii Hammerheads of the second-year
Indoor Professional Football League win the championship game over
the host iTexas Terminators.
' MoUner, a defensive lineman for the Hammerheads, said the title
was the first of its Kind in his gridiron career.
Hawaii had lost its final 17 games and success was also fleeting at
bee and Estancia. · ·
"I think the only championship I've ever won was Harbor Area
Baseball/ Mollner said before the Aug. 21 title conquest.
Mollner led the »Shark Attack" defeflSe with six quarterback sacks.
The 6-foot-6, 245-pounder, who wants to add another 20 pounds, is -
now exploring professional opportunities in the Canadian Football
League or possibly NFL Europe.
John R5)mm (Mississippi) and John Llebengood (Chapman) are for-
mer Eagles competing this fall at the collegiate level.
Romm, w'ho also played at Orange Coast College, is a 6-2, 241-
pound junior defensive end for the Rebels. He worked hi-; way up to a
starting spot midway through spring pr~ctice. But a twisted knee, sus-
tained early in fall workouts, pushed him to No. 2 on the depth chart.
Rorrun, wearing No. 50, did, however, see time in the Rebels opener
·Saturday at Memphis and his coaches are expecting him to contribute
heavily this season for the Southeastern Conference representative.
Liebengood, like' Romm a former Orange County All-Star, is a
6-31/21 230-pound redshirt freshman whose future is most likely on the
oCfeflSive line for· the Panthers.
Manu Tanielu. the Newport-Mesa District and Daily Pilot Pacific
Coast League MVP last fall, was expected to land at SaddlebacR Col-
lege, but will sit out this season. ,
Former Eagle and OCC Pirate Frough Jahid, a defensive back, had
planned to walk on at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo as a juruor this fall. But
his class load did not mesh well with the football practice schedule last
spring. With two years of eligibility remaining, however, he does plan
to give football another try next season.

trumps. When clubs broke 3-2, the
slam could be claimed. Declarer ran
five spade tricks to discard the losing
heart from hand, then ruffed a heart.
That was the 12th trick-five spades, four clubs, the two red aces an4 the
heart ruff.
It is not always easy 10 decide on
the proper trump suit when you have
a S-4 fit in one suit and a 4-4 fit in an~r. As a general ruJe, if your
~ key is that, when playing in
the ~ flt, you can ~n a discard on the five-card suit That 1s not the
