(Beach Access owner Thomas Moore ) is going
through,"
Radio personality Schlessinger filed a $1-million
lawsuit in Orange County Superior Court a gainst
Moore earlier this month for publicly calling her a
liar. The lawsuit is part of an ongoing dispute that
has &panned nearly the entire summer ..
Two months ago, Schlessinger took her son
shopping at Beach Access and saw a copy of Big
Brother, a skateboarding magazine. On heI
nationally syndicated radio show, she ·said that the
•,
magazine was pornographic and unsuitable for
children.
Moore denied that he wowd place such a maga-
zine in Beach Access and demanded that Sch-
lessinger retract her statement The bad publicity
has caused a sigruficant decline in sales and has hurt
his reputation in the community, he said.
At the end of August, Moore's lawyer Andrew
Guilford suggested that his client w as interested in
m~ting with Schlessinger to quietly res9lve the sit-
uation. Those plans were derailed when Moore's
attorney called Schlessinger a liar, said Allan Mayer,
Schlessinger's spokesman.

In the latest Kevin Costner
baseball mOvie, "For Love of the
Game,• Moorad, who will attend
the premiere torught m Century
City, has a small part on the
silver screen.
Named one of the 100 Most
Influential People m Sports by
The Sporting News in ~ch of
the last five years, Moorad has a
client baseball list that mcludes
Clark. Ivan Rodriguez, Darin
Erstad, Matt Williams and
Shawn Green . Hts firm also
represents myriad NFL
quarterbacks, including ll'oy
Aikman of the Dallas Cowboys
and Steve Young of the San
Francisco 49ers.
•At this point,• Moorad said,
•1 feel that I have the best JOb in
Americ:a. I represent athletes 24
hours a day and have l.cigh
Steinberg as my partner.•
Moorad, whose fli'st client was
former Seattle Mariner p1tcher
Calvin Jones in 198", has been a
managing partner of the fum for
10 years. A third partner, David
Dunn, is about to come aboard,
forming Steinberg, Moorad &
Dunn. The firm has negotiated
S2 billion in sports contracts, and
m the last six, years, has
represented about 140 a thletes. ·
Moorad, who played baseball
and basketball growing up and
Wj!S a huge NBA fan, decided in
1977, his junior year at UCLA, to
become a sports agent He ·
visited legendary former UCLA
Athletic Drrector J.D Morgan
and told tum of his career deSlle.
Morgan put him in touch with
Sam Gilbert, a longtime
supporter and fnend of the
Brwns' athletic programs, and
who later volunteered to
represent several former UCLA
basketball players, including
negotiating the first pro contracts
for Lew Alandor and Keith
Wilkes.
"!Gilbert) chd it
completely out of the
goodness of his heart,•
Moo rad said. •He
loved the players and
he loved (Coach John
Wooden's) program I
was 21 at the time, and
here I was. sitting m .
hJs penthouse office m
the San Fernando
Valley, listening to Sam
Gilbert weave these
amazmg tales from his
own representation expenences,
and it was fa. anabng. I realized
that one day, that's exactly what
I wanted to do."
After law school, Moorad
went to work for a traditional
litigation law fl.rm for one year,
then began to pursue his dream.
He set up shop m a one-bedroom
apartment on Balboa Island and
·called myseU a sports lawyer.
The big question in those
days -and the one I lived in
mortal fear of -was, ·So who
are your clients?' And it took
some penod of tune before I had
those answers,• he said
Moorad, the la test member
of the Daily Pilot Sports Hall of
Fame, celebrating the
millenruum, enjoys pro football
like a fan, but treats baseball like
a business. ·rn baseball, I have a
hard tune remaining objective m
any level,· he said.
For months, the Steinberg &
Moorad firm has been for sale,
and s~culation has it the two
super agents are close to
agreeing on a rune-figure deal
with tie to the entertainment
industry.
Moorad is active at Mariners
Church, Big Canyon Country
Oub, and UCLA, is involved
with the Young Preside nts
Orgaruzation (California Coast
Chapter) and serves on the
board of trustees at Villanova
Uruvcrs1ty Law School, where he
graduated. Moorad also seTVe
on the board of directors for the
Newport Sports Museum.
Moorad and his wife, Jan,
funded an atbletlc scholmhlp et
for UCl,.A hve yeen. They bav
two boy ·Justin. 5, and

Opening lead. five or •
In bridge as in battle, victory often
goes to the one who 'sits there f~est
with the mostest,' 1n the famous
words of Confederate Gen. Forrest.
But sometimes guile js needed to
·conceal your intent from the enemy.
The auction Is sll'aightforword, and
a mauer of simple arithmetic. Afier
South opens one no trump. North has
no reasQn to consider any action
other than a raise lo fame. After the lead o a low spade,
declarer docs not have the lime lo try
to set up tricks in two suits-surren-
dcrin1 the lead twice will probably
allow the defenders to collect three
spade trick~. the ace of hear11 and a
trick in whichever minor suit declarer
elects to go after.
South can count two spede tricks,
four tricks in on~ minor, given a nor-
mal 3-2 break. and two tricks in the other. It is essential that a ninth trick
be~l up befOfC the opponents act the
si*les going. Tu accomplish that.. d'eclarer must try to steal a trick, and
the obvious suit in ~hich to auempt
that is hearts.
Since the defenders might not be
aware of the situation, best is to win
the fitsl trick in dummy. Al trick two
declarer should lead the jack or hearts
from the table, makin,1 rook to all the
world that he is trying to take the
heart finesse. As the cards lie, it is no
easy matter for 1;8$t to rise wilh the
ace. When Easl follows low, declarer
will win a heart trick and .can then focus on a min« suit. Although a 4· I
splil in the chosen suit could still lead
to defeat, both minors behave kindly.
so declarer comes to nine licks vra
three in the majors and six in the
minors.
