himself within several arm-lengths of
the man who stole his 23-year-old daughter

Would a father's rage, roused to blast-furnace

back on the details of Denise's fate -the rape,
the handcuffs, the ghastly overkill of 31 blows

"I had a fear of going into the courtroom,•

Council tO put final
touches on city budget
• Newport Beach plan comes in at $112.2 million and
there may be $500,000 extra to sink into city programs.
By Jennifer Armstrong, Daily Pilot
NE~PORT BEACH -City
Council members today will work
out the kinks in next year's pro-
posed $112.2 milllon budget and
adopt a final 1997-98 financiaJ
plan.
Council members have been
reviewing a draft of the document
since May and compiled a list of
items to dlscuss before adopting a
b_udget at Monday's meeting. At
the last meebng, City Manager
Kevin Murphy Sd1d property and
sales taxes may be up $500,000
over ongmal estimates
That medns extra money to
sink into the city's reseive funds
or into projects that didn't make it
mto the prelirmnary budget.
On Monday, the council will
discuss adding to next year's bud-
get:
• $52,000 for repairing the Bal-
boa Island bulkhead wall, parts of
which are leaking.
• $140,000 to start trnplement-
ing a document imaging system, I
which would store the city's 15 I
million pages of documents on
computer instead of paper. The
dlllount represents the first year
or a hve-year program, wluch will
cost $500,000 total
• $38,000 for "doggie walk

• $250,000 to continue a 15-
year plan for upgrading city street
lights. The city has spent that
amount in past years for the pro-
gram. The proposed budget con-
tains no funding for it.
• $7 ,500 to cover half the costs
of next year's Newport Dunes
fireworks show.
Items currently in the proposed
budget will also be up for discus-
sion, including:
· • spending $157 ,000 next year
to consolidate the Fire and
Marine Department and City
Attorney's office in the upper lev-
el of the two-level building they
share. The lower level will be
converted into a public confer-
ence room that will be accessible
for disabled citizens.
• giving a $25,000 human ser-
vices grant and $40,000 arts and
culturaJ grant to locaJ groups.
• widening Newport Boule-
vard between 30th and 32nd
streets by adding one lane for
traffic exjting the Balboa Peninsu-
la and a right tum lane at 32nd
Street. The project is estimated to
cost $1.2 million.
• adding money to the city's
insurance reserve fund, which
pays out general liability, work-
ers' compensation and compen-
sated absences. The draft of the
budget calls for putting $4.8 mil-
lion into the fund.
working so hard this year," Mrs.
Newman said. "I told him we're
actually working harder because
we're able to do so much more.
We have to plan more. We have to
go outside the curriculum
because we're getting through
everything so fast."
Superintendent Mac Bernd
adds another theory: "It's about
empowerment. With reduced
class sizes, the teachers are
empowered. They're making a
big difference they can see. And
they work that much harder."
Whtle Newport-Mesa first-
and second-grade classes
devoured more material than
they have in decades, the biggest
wmners m reduced classrooms
are the slower learners. Problems
are identified, and ind1viduaJ
instruction begins immediately.
"I got a chance to read with
each student indlvidually once a
day," Mrs. Newman said. "It's
something I couldn't have
dreamed of with 33 students."
Reduced class sizes have at
least one other benefit. Mrs.
Newman was thinking about
retiring this June, but she's <lead-
ed to hold off for at least one more
year.
"This is just fantastic,· she
said.

nesses benefit as well as the city.
"The fact that VISA is using it
for its Gold Card promotion
shows the great reputation South
Coast Plaza has, but it should
also help other businesses there,·
he said.
Included in the promotion,
card holders will have the chance
to win a $10,000 shopping spree
at their choice of any of the eight
shopping destinations. Cus-
tomers are entered into the
sweepstakes when they shop at
one of the destinations in the pro-
motion.
Additionally, there are eight
$1,000 shOpJing sprees awarded
at each of the locations. But
South Coast Plaza is throwing in
another $5,000 shopping spree as
part of the promotion.
Motion Pictures, Arts and Sci-
ences announced it is consid-
ering bringing the 71 st Annual
Academy Awards show to the
Orange County Performing
Arts Center in 1999. But a
decision is not expected until
later this summer.
The council wants to lure
reluctant film industry insiders
into seeing the benefits of
holding the gala affair in
Orange County. ·
"It's a fun way to communi-
cate to the motion picture
community that we hope to
have the opportunity to host
the Oscars." said Debra
Vaswaru, speaktng on behalf
of the council.

HUBE RS
CONTINUED FROM 1
not angry at him isn't correct, but
I don't have that extreme burn-
ing hatred that I had at one
time."
For Dennis Hu~er and his
wife, Ione, who sat together in
the front row throughout the trial
that culminated last week in a
jury recommending the death
penalty for their daughter 's
killer, the greatest hurdle is
behind them.
After six weeks in Orange
County hotels, a blizzard of
media attention, and a crash
course in the judicial process,
they're back at their home by a
river in Mandan, North Dakota.
"What I've learned is that the
justice system does work," Den-
nis Huber said. "I think we
looked at the O.J . trial, and came
away thinking the system is
totally wrong and wrecked. (But)
the truth prevailed and it was
beautiful to see."
"You think it's a cut-and-drted
case, and then you hear of all the
things that can go wrong," said
lone, 53. "Until (the trial) was
b ehind us, we had all this fear of
the unknown."
Denise Huber, a 23-year-old
UCI graduate who worked as a
waitress at the Cannery restau-
rant in Newport Beach and as a
cashier at the Broadway in Fash-
ion Island, had a face people said
might belong to the girl next
door.
Her Honda Accord blew a tire
as she was returning from a Mor-
rissey concert in Los Angeles on
June 2. 1991, leaving her strand-
ed at night at the side of the
Corona del Mar Fr~eway in Cos-
t.a Mesa. When police found the
car, she wasn't with il
By what Deputy District
Attorney Christopher Evans
would later describe as a

deep-rooted suspicion that
Denise was dead.
"I really believed 111 my heart
that she wasn't a.llve, • she said.
"Maybe there's something about
a mother that JUSt knows."
And while the Hubers plead-
ed for answers -publicly,
through the press, and privately,
from God -the killer was col-

Having

her to death
. -DENNIS HUBER
with a hammer and nail puller,
Famalaro kept the body as a
"perverse trophy," the prosecu-
tor said.
Between the disappearance
and the discovery, the Hubers
endured three years of frantic
searching and uncertainty. They
prayed. They enlisted volunteers
to post flyers and pass out
bumper stickers. They paid tens
of thousands of dollars to private
eyes, who promised results
police could not deliver .. . and
came up with nothing.
"I think we got ripped off a lit-
tle bit there," Dennis Huber said.
"But when you're in that emo-
tional state you grasp at straws.
You're not thinking the best you
ever thought."
As time passed, the Hubers'
grief took different forms. Dennis
continued to spearhead the pub-
licity campaigri, sustained on an
increasingly tenuous reed of
hope. Ione turned to group coun-
seling, devoured books by
female Christian writers who
tned to find meaning in loss, and
tried to reconcile hersell to the
lecti.ng newspaper and television
accounts of the unfolding case.
"That's what made me the
most angry," Ione said. "(He
knew) that we needed to know
someth.rng so bad, and yet he
couldn't even anonymously let
us know what happened.~
Like her husband, lone won-
dered how seeing FamaJaro in
the flesh would affect her.
"I thought maybe I'd want to
go up and choke him, but I did-
n't have the desire to do that,"
she said. "It was like he was
there, and so was the table. cmd
so was the chair. I don't know
how to explain that."
Dennis, a computer software
salesman, said the loss of their
daughter also destroyed them
financially because they couldn't
focus on their work. A mortgage
b rokerage company he started
the day she vanished quickly
collapsed.
Finding memories of the area
too painful, the Hubers moved
from their home in Newport
Beach to North Dakota soon
after the body was found They

will retw n to Orange County
when Judge John J Ryan for-
mally sentences Famalaro on
Sept. 5.
The Hubers support the ver-
dict for execuuon. Ione said she
will not wait until the execution
date, which might not arrive for
10 or 15 years, to get on Wlth her
tile. Denrus said he wants to live
long enough to see Farna.laro
die.
"When they talk about an eye
for an eye, that would be if they
gave me the nail puller and put
him in handcuffs and let me beat
him to death," Denrus said.
"That would be vengeance. Our
view of the death penalty is it's
justice."
He added, "People say they
don't believe in it. I say, 'Walk in
my shoes for the last six yedTs,
then I'll listen to you You have
no idea what I went through · •
Whether the Hubers will con-
sider forgiving hrm depends
largely on iJ Famalaro shows
genuine remorse, and they did-
n't see it at the bial They said he
never tried to make eye contact
with them.
"I think 11 the man was truly
sorry he would try and convey it
to you," Demus said. "He has to
ask for (forgiveness), to say, 'I'm
truly sorry that I hurt you, would
you please forgwe me?'''
Even with such a plea, lone
said, she does not know iJ she
could forgive.
"I hope God would give me
the grace to do that, because I
couldn't do it by mysell," she
said. "He (Famalaro) didn't cry
when they described the 31
blows to the head, and when
they described the three years
when we went through the worst
period in our lives."

HUNTINGTON BEACH -There
probably isn't anything more American
than Little League baseball on the first
day of summer.
And for the Dodgers of the Costa Mesa
National Little League, there probably
wasn't anything better.

By Molly Yanity, Daily Pilot
HUNTINGTON BEACH -Oh, if they
just could've held on. U they just could
have savored the beginning. If they just
could have ended it early.
For the Costa Mesa National Little
League Cardinals, it did end early, just
not soon enough as the Fountain Valley
Reds came from behind to mercy the
Cardinals 15-4 in five innings in the
Minor A Division of the District 62 Tour-
nament of Champions Saturday.
The Cardinals, managed by David Pis-
arski, took advantage of early control
problems by Reds' starter Kimberly
Baughman to push in two runs in the top
of the first when Isaac Inouye and Alex
Pisarski scored.
Fountain Valley countered in its half of
the inning, but a Pisarski, the Cardinals'
catcher, squelched the rally when he
rlailed Evan Stevens trying to steal sec-
ond.
Jn the third, the Cardinals continued to
build a lead when Pisarski tagged a dou-
ble to left center field lo drive in Ian Mor-
ton, who was rut by a pitch,' and Matt
Stevenson, who had reached on a single.
But the middle of the third was a turn-
ing point for the Fountain Valley Little
League champs.
They tagged starter Stevenson for
three runs. The Reds continued the
onslaught, even though the Cardinals
changed pitchers two times. They ended
up with 14 runs m three innings, tbanks
in part to six fielding mishaps by the Cos-
ta Mesa squad. Morton tallied the Cardi-
nals' only other hit.

The Dodgers' manager Mike Sheafer

that his team was about to be sent home
early with a 10-run defeat, but the
Dodgers' starting pitcher quickly
silenced the mouths of the A's by stifling

batters.
Then in the ~cond inning, the
Dodgers did some more quieting by post-

an error and was followed by a double by
Josh Kornegay. Kevin Sveinson drove
Garcia in on a fielder's choice, and Kevin

Tigers fell 8-0 to the Ocean View Angels.
The Tigers were limited to just two

The Angels held a slim 1-0 lead after
three innings, but the Tigers threatened
to score when Josh Glauch ripped a sin-

had walked, attempted to score but was
the victim of a 9-6-2 relay that ended the

But the Dodgers had just begun.
As Jorgenson controlled Athletics'
offense with a mix of offspeed pitches,
the Dodgers played flawless defense @d
took advantage of nearly every at-bat.
In the third, the Costa Mesa team
ousted the As' starting pitcher. The
reliever, Shane Stahl, loaded the bases
with a walk to Courvoiser when Sankey
ripped a triple to clear them and give his
squad a 7-0 lead. He scored on the next
pitch, a wild one that bounced to the
backstop.
Jorgenson allowed just three hits, but
one was a first-pitch home run -a line
drive by Billy Seymour. He struck out
seven batters.
Sankey was the offensive standout for
the Dodgers, which is the only Costa
Mesa Little League team left in the Tour-
nament of Champions. He was 2 for 2
with a double and a triple. He reached
base three times as he was beaned in the
fifth. Sankey scored two runs, the latter
being the 11th run that clinched the five-

The Costa Mesa National
League Dodgers fell 4-3 in the
Minor B Division of the District 62
Tournament of Champions
despite a fine outing.
The Dodgers were down 1-0
when they exploded for three
runs in the second inning.
Keith Eldridge led off the
inning with a walk. He was
erased on Nicholas Feinhals'
fielder's ch-0ice. Feinhals
advanced to second on a passed
ball. Nicolas Juarez and Jason
Cramer earned free passes. Kane
Curran worked out a walk that
sent Feinhals across the plate to
tie the score. Evan Van Green fol-
lowed with a two-run single that
sent the small crowd wild.
But the Tigers·· pitcher
Matthew Overend settled down
and shutout the Dodgers the rest
of the way, allowing them just
one more hit -a double by Cur-
ran -to set up Pierce's game-win-
ning blast.
Van Green pitched/ for the
Dodgers striking out eight bat-
ters.

McAda honors so1ne real underdog
• Mr. Irrelevant xxn is also
gTeeted by the NFL's last pick
(by Green Bay) 44 years ago.
By Richard Dunn, Daily Pilot
NEWPORT BEACH
-In a unique twist, it
was Mr. Irrelevant
passing out awards
and shaking hands
Sunday in the 22nd
annual Arrival Party,
billed this year as the
Celebration of the Underdog to salute
lrre.levant Week.and Anny quarterback
Ronnie McAda.
AfterlrrelevantWeekfounderPaul
Salata introduced the 13-member
assembly of ·underdogs" to the
capacity crowd .i 1Win Palms
restawant, 2nd lfeutenant McAda lined
them up in formation, then hollered:
"Ready ... jump!"
That got a good laugh. McAda, the
240th and dead-last selection in the
NFL draft by the Green Bay Packers,
put the shoe on the other foot.
HThey did fine, especially since they
didn't know what they were doing," ·
said McAda, merely wanning up for
his real drllling duties which begin
Aug. 5 at Ft. Sill, Okla., when he starts
a two-year military commitment.
McAda, who greeted each of the
underdog honorees as they walked
from the stage, was showered with the
usual gifts and proclamations in the
annual ltrelevant Week madcap
festival to honor the NPL's last pick.
Even the theme song from the cartoon
•Underdog" was performed.
McAda anived in a Hummer, then
was transported in a UPS goU cart into
the restaurant. Any problema getting
the cart here, someone asked1 •wen, it
took two days and a lot of tickets to get
here," saJd Jim Duran of UPS.
Among McAda's gilts included a
cheese head from the Green Bay
Chamber of Commerce and genuine
Wisconsin tissue paper along with a
golden plunger, but the gift from Coon
(a case of beer) received the biggest
ovation from the crowd.
Among those in attendance was
former NFL guard Al Barry, the 30th
and last pick of the 1953 draft by the
Packers.
Bany, who played at USC, started
for the Packers in 1954, then went into
the Air Force for two years, playing on
back-to~back National Service
Championship teams in 1955 and '56.
Bany played again in the NFL from
1957 to 1961 Vlith the New York Giants
and Los Angeles Chargers, and played
in a total of three NFL championship
games, losing all three -in '58 and '59
to John Unites' Colts and in '60 while
playing for the Chargers.
"We did win those service titles in
the Air Poree, but t always wanted that
(NFL championship) ring," said Barry,
whose offensive coach at New York
during his time was Vince Lombardi,
while Tum Landry was the def ennve
(
coach.
Mr. Irrelevant had yet to be
dreamed up by Salata when Bany was
the last pick.
Barry also needed a lesson in
negotiating when the Packers first
drafted him. One team oUidal, •wtth a
cigar in his mouth," told Barry the top
offensive guards on the team earned
$5,000 a year. When asked how much
he wanted, Barry blurted "$5,750." He
was signed instantly.
Topping all gifts, of course, was
Mary Barr of Barr Jewelers in Newport
Beach, presenting McAda with a Rolex
watch. Barr launched what appears to
be a tradition last year when she
presented a Rolex to Mr. ln'elevant
XXl, S&.m Manuel of the San Prandlco
49ers.
McAda, meanwhile, will cop hil
week-long stay in Irrelevant Week's
final event, tonight's College Night et
the Draft Choice in Leguna Niguel.

•The 45th didn't quite
make it for the '50 team,
they'll try again on Sept. 20.
Sparkling athletic achievement
of the past will be the cause
of numerous celebrations for
the Class of 1951 at the Balboa
Pavilion Sept. 20 th1s year.
The 1950-51 season was a
sterling period of classy play and
championships in basketball, track
and field, while the football team
had a winning season at 6-3.
The grid team, as juniors, also
played a major role in helping the
'49 team score 323 points and
finish with an 8-1 record.
It will stand, in part, as the 45th
class reunion since it didn't
materialize last year. Some may
choose to call it the 46th reunion
and feel more correct.
Football was coached by '36
Harbor High graduate Al lrwin
while the late Ralph K. Reed
tutored basketball and track.
· Although the class in .recent
years lost three of its outStanding
athletes -fullback Larry
McMasters, the league's leading
scorer; guard Bill Wittman,
All-Sunset League and student
body president; and former league
champion shot putter Lloyd
Swingle -will be missed, and fond
memories will remain.
One major mark for the '51
Sailor gridders was the fact the
team never lost a home game.
It almost managed seven
victories, but lost one game to St.
• Anthony, 15-13.
An apparent 72-yard
touchdown run by ace halfback
' Dick Jones was nullified by a
holding penalty.
The late Bill Wittman had this
to say before he passed on a few
years back. HThe ·so team was
good, solid running team that
finished to the perennial power
during those years, Fullerton,
· which went all the way to the
large schools CIF final against
Compton."
He added, "If we had had a
good passing game (the
percentage was only .270), who
knows what we might have done."
Injuries hampered quarterback
Bob Scotland. Great potential was
present with sophomore
quarterback Rollie Pulaski, but he
needed a year to blossom, which
he did in '52 being named third
string CIF.
Pulaski's final passing mark was
.495 and his punt:i.og marks were
overwhelming, sometimes past the
65-70 yard stripes. His rushing in
'52 was also commendable. He
scored 102 points.
What helped the '51 Tars was

two undefeated Sagehen teams in
history.
Above, the Sailors of the season of 1950; below, Larry McMasters, the Sunset League's
leading scorer, takes oU on a scoring jaunt , leaving a defender only able to watch.
Schmidt bad switched from end
to halfback, while Wittman
remained a guard.
One highlight came for
Newport after Santa Ana's second
appearance at Davidson Field. It
marked the Saints' first loss on
Harbor turf, 19-2, which gave it a
historical note in view of past
games at Santa Ana Bowl.
Some of the superb track
champions for Newport in '51
featured high hurdler and high
jumper Glen Griffith, shot putters
Swingle and Bob Van Drimlen,
sprinter Dick Jones and half-miler
Bob Woodhouse.
1Taditional flavor will be
presented along the ranks, which
includes the family leader of the
Balboa Island Feny, Seymour
Beek, directing the committee. It
features No.nna Marshall Millett,
Mary Meisinger Judy, Andrea
Cribben Jones and Ann Gristy
Knipp.
The flavor will also be
incorporated with the music of
longtime band leader Eustace
Rojas, who once taught Spanish to
the same class at Harbor High.
Rojas eventually taught music at
Orange Coast College and
directed the Pirate football band.
Sounds like the rumbling of the
good old days.

Whot do you bid now?
A· It ia cloee whether you should
jump t.o two apades or two no trump
-both invitational. Since partner's

prefer thejwnp to two no trump.
There are waya for partner IA> probe

What action do you take?
A · Your void in heart.a strongly
suggesta partner has a powerful,
balanced hand. ff that is the case, it
becomes doubtfol whether you can
make game and very likely that the
opponenta are in the same boat.
Pass. This is a case where you

enough t.o defeat one no trump, or
North int.ended t he double as a

your removing the redouble could
result in a catastrophe. lf the latter,

A ·There are hands where we
