·s-1 Bob· might be back.
Fonner Republican Rep. Bob Doman,
who lost a race last year for his old Garden
Grove seat, told a Capitol Hill newspaper
last week it is very likely he will run against
Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-Huntington
Beach).
Dorpan has been toying with the idea
since right after his defeat in November to
Rep. Loretta Sanchez (D-Garden Grove),
but his statement last week was his
strongest to date.
Rohrabacher said Monday he iS too busy
to worry about a.possible primary against the
representative turned radio talk show bost.
·rve just got so much to do, I don't have
time to worry about Bob,• the congressman
said. ·
Doman could not be reached for com-
ment.
A race between the two could tum into
a donny'brook. Despite their shared conser-
vative philosophies, the two men have had
a tense relationship since 1991, when
redistricting nearly forced them to run
against one another. Doman backed out of
the Huntington Beach district and into the
Garden Grove one, which is much more
Democratic.
Those Democratic voters· came out in
force in 1996, when Sanchez first beat Dor-
nan by less than 1,000 votes.
Doman has said he blames Rohrabach-
er, among others, including Rep. Chrlsto-
p.her Cox (R-Newport Beach), for not help-
ing him againSt Sanchez.
Rohrabacher's seat is much safer for a
Republican, but that could change given a
nasty primary between the two, said former
· county Democratic Party Chamnan Jun
Toledano.
•1 think it would probably help the
Democratic candidate tremendously,•
Toledano said. •These two will tear each
other apart.•
The potential beneficiary of that fight is
Ted Crisell, who just recently became the first
Democratic candidate for Rohrabacher's seat.
Crisell, a 53-year-old who grew up in
Mesa Verde, agreed that a primary
between Rohrabacher and Doman could
provide a r~re opening for his campaign.

Professional skateboarder Rodney Cassell, 35, of Stanton grinds the top of a skate bowl at a skate park
at William M. Beebe Park in Mission Viejo.
Y our paper and especially your reporter
Elise Gee are to be congratulated on the .
fair treatment you have given on the
subject of Latino input regarding the West Side ·
development. You could have easily sensation-.
alized this subject by making it sound like Lati-
no input was purposely shut out. Instead, you
decided to report the facts, that many things
were done to try to get the Latino participation~
early on. As a member of the Costa Mesa
Sure, there are some places I
could move where my kind is actu-
ally embraced, Hunungton Beach

cessful community pdrks for their
skatebodrding citizens. San Diego
and San Francisco Pven bid huge
sums for the nghts to bring the
skate-heavy Xtreme Gdmes to their
towns.
But not hen•
And it's the worst sort of deceitful,
spineless dlscnmmdtion as practiced
in the Newport-Mesa ared. On the
surface --within the med1a spotlight
·-everyone says we need to support
today's youth, we need to adapt to
changes an recreabonal usage, we
need lo build a skateboard park.
From recreation ofhctals to neighbor-
hood groupst It's all the same politi·
cally correct nonsense: "We need a
place for today's lads to practice
their favorite sport,# th~y say.
But the moment a spcclfic place
is suggested as a location for a skate
park, the wailing and gnashing of
teeth begins like clockwork. "It
can't be HERE It will attract the
WRONG ELEMENT Someone will
get hurt and we'll get SUED. Skate-
boarders are TROUBLE."
It doesn't matter that all the facts
go the other way. aut this bias is not
about rational thought, it's about
false notions and ancient m.inp-sets .
Stop lt. It~ tune for this old fogy-
ism to end.
Today the Newport-Mesa area is
filled with recreation facilities that
are a legacy of the "in" sports dur-
mg development here in the 1950s
arid '60s.
Lots of room for football. Plenty of
baseball diamonds. More tennis
courts than you could ever use. Bu.t
if you're one of the many members
of Generation X or Y who are not
attracted to the jockstrap sports,
you 're on the street, dodging cops
and false stereotypes.
And for this to continue to be the
case here --in Newport Beach and
Costd Mesa, the very heart of the
surf and skate industry, the plac(!
Time magazme called the Velcro
Valley --is pathetic.
We all love Lindsay Davenport,
but face the facts --there are many
times more people in our area who
make a living in the surf and skate
industry than work in the tennis
industry
Four years ago Newport Beach
finally lifted a 30-year-old law forc-
ing surfers to stay out of the ocean
durtng every summer afternoon.

W hy are we mshlng forward
to destroy all that makes
Newport Beach dilferent?
Now the Cannery, with its historical .
s1gruficance, its essence of place, will
vdnish. We will be placeless.
Many of the citizens I've talked to
are shocked at this loss of a land·
mark. Only the developers and real
estate salespeople are rubbing their
hands with glee at a new opporturuty ·
to profit from therr sales.
Tunes change, sure, but we need d
sense of who we were to remind us of
a simpler time that is our hentage.
I ask the City Council of Newport
Beach, all who approve of the idea of
more development, to consider the
preservation of such hlstorical monu-
ments -our hlstory.
My own vision 15 for a commuruty
center there. A pla5=e for citizens to
meet. A day-care center for our chil-
. dren. For seruors, a place to get their
flu shots and visit. I see youngsters
taking ballet or salsa classes. Jn one
room a string quartet is practicmg,
another 15 having art lessons or book
discussions. Music in the evenings
and the walls filled with local artJ.sts
such as Lorrame Edrie, who lives up
the street. By the way, local artists are
fond of depicting the Cannery in their
work Theyllavea sense of soul.
There q:>uld be bike repair and
lessons ~boating and collections for
the hoi.n'eless. All these things would
benefit the community. What else can
we do? Declare a moratonurn on all
development until we do some think-

Moreover, St. Joaquim Church
itseU is partiopating in the robbery.
Why aren't you usmg your knowledge
of how the wellare system really
works by challenging the church and
asking them why they would help the
government rob its own citizens?
Doesn't this church have enough
sense to know that the state is inter-
fering with their own charities and
God-given mission? Doesn't this
church know that taxation is theft
and that the church itsell is in viola-
tion of its own Ten Commandments?
Doesn't this church understand
that 1t is compromising its freedom by
assisting government plunder and
that 1t IS tacitly surrendering a portion
of its independence to the state?
Doesn't this church understand
that it is slowly being nationalized by

This is the way churches operate

T~,~ber 2l, 1999 3 . If the Arches could talk)
what·a tale they would tell
T he Arches has been around
for a long time, since 1920
to be exact. Oh, not in its
present form, but a man named
Johnny Vtllelle opened a service
· station there in 1920. It was a
pretty gutsy decision because the
amount of automobile traffic pass-
ing through that intersection on a
daily basis i.n 1920 left much to be
desired.
The service station had three
arches to advert.J.se itself, thus the
name"' Arches began in 1920, even
if the restawant didn't.
The service station prospered,
so Johnny decided to put in a
short-order place with his sister,
Ann Villelle, as manager It too
prospered so that eventually
Johnny' built the pre::.ent struc-
ture, some time during the early
'20s.
Johnny had no expenence i.n
the restaurant held but had a nat-
ural gift for the business, and the
restaurnnt soon became the No 1

Johnny had a problem. Johnny
Villelle was the most fanatical
bird hunter 1 hdve ever known.
Any ddte in the calenddl' there is
some kmd of a game bird avail-

began to tum the operation of his
restaurant over to his bartender
so he could hunt.

did know a set of books when he
saw them. He figured out that his
bartender, to whom he turned

Poley noted that Newport

South Coast's residential treat-

Sewell countered that most of
those calls came because I
teenagers had run away from the

violent or angry.

SHALIMAR

It's a success that founders
hoped to, and have, established at
other county loations. Shalimar
was formed as an outreach min-
istry by St Andrew's Presbyterian
Church of Newport Beach, along
with St. Joaquim's church in Cos-
ta Mesa and Women of Vision.
St Andrew's continues to sup-
port the center financially and
contributed more than $100,000
to its operations this year, said
Ralph McCall, missions associate
at the church.
Randy Barth, an elder at St.
Andrew's and co-founder of Shali-
mar, was inspired by the learning
center's success to foWld TiiINK
Together as a springboard for similar
lea.ming centers in other communi-
ties. There are now five in the cities
of Santa Ana, Orange and Tustin.
"As Shalimar began to unfold
and become effective, we thought
it was something that was replic-
able," said Pablo R. Diaz~ TiiINK
Together's executive director.
The learning center has helped
send a number of kids to college
whose parents never graduated
high school. De Soto said. 1\vo
years ago, 13 of the 14 seniors
who graduated from Shahmdr
went on to college. Last year, it
was three .out of four, De Soto said.
At Whittier Elementary, where
the student body is 95% Latino,
teach~ and staff have formed
partnerships with the learning
center, Principal Sharon Blakely
said. Last year three staff members
from Whittier were sent to the cen-

grade. Ochoa said he comes tor

"My parents can't help me
because they don't speak much
English," Ochoa said. •
And the benefits at Shalimar
go beyond education.
"We've opted to choose tutw-
ing, homework help and edu<!a-
tion as the vehicle to impact tile
community," Diaz said.
Those methods have far-readi-
ing effects that touch multiple laym
in the community and in families~
The learning center sparked oth-
er efforts in the community, includ-
ing a task force that addressed
crime, code enforcement and bedu-
tification of the neighborhood.
"There was a time when Maria
(Alvarez) had 20 to 30 gang mem-
bers standing outside her fence,"
Madueno said.
Those days seemed distant
Monday night, with families
replacing the gang members and
children runtting in and out of the
center. Through THINK Together,
community activists hope to start
more centers throughout the
county, and there's a good chance
the effort will be duplicated in
Costa Mesa although that could
be a year or more away, Diaz said,
"It would be great if Shalimar
could give birth to another cen-
ter," he said.
De Soto agreed.
"There's still a huge need· in
Costa Mesa," he said.

HUNTINGTON BEACH -After a timeout,
Newport Harbor High's girls volleyball team
walked out of the huddle with a big cry of
defense. A .couple of players paused though and
realized they were on offense.
Defense was what was on the Sailors' mind
throughout the match, and a sharp one keyed a
15-8, 15-6, victory over Calvary Chapel in the
Dave Mohs Memorial Volleyball Tournament
championship match at Edison High Monday
night.
With long rallies forc~d by the Eagles in the
fiist game, the Sailors depended on numerous
digs and seven blocks from Krista Dill to pull it
out. The second game went more smoothly for
Newport Harbor, as it got eight kills from April
Ross and seven from Heather Cullen.

team in the area, and I told my team to try to

Calvary Chapel's semng was eV1dent from
the start. The Eagles jumped out to an early 6-2
lead in the first game behind aces from Brooke
Kuhn and Halina Staruland Tough serves also
forced poor returns from Newport Harbor's side
in the run.
After the early deficit, .the Sailors started to
rally. Dill put up two qwck blocks and a kill to
trigger a 6-0 Newport Harbor run. Calvary
Chapel rallied to tie the game at 8-8 with two
more seives that forced poor returns. Then Ross
picked up her game with three qwck kills, and
the Sailors closed out the game with a 7 ·O run.

Brockie was not new to the

could be clauned, South had no way
10 detemune that 12 lrick.s were the~
for the taki111, and so cOOlc the safer
suit slam.
Since leadin& from an honor was
too risky, Wt$t chose IO attack with a
club. There were 12 fasc cricltt avail-
able -seven diamonds, four clubs
and the .:e of hearts. HoVwever, no
duplicate maven would be satisfied
by jusc !akin& 12 ·tricks when there
was play for an ovcnrick .
The simple way to J 3 tricks was
via the heart finesse after d1SCardina
the jack of spades on dummy's Iona
club. But dccl1ter deoided it could do
no harm to postpooe the finesse as
long as ~sible. Instead, South won
I.he club m hand and ran all seven dia·
mon<ttricks, discarding three spades
and a heart from the table, followed
by three more club tricks endina 1n
dummy, declarer coming down to A 3 or hearts in hand and Q J in dummy.
The question was whether to try the
heart finesse or setUe for 12 tricks.
At duplica1e pairs, declarer will go
10 great lengths 10 secure an over-
trick, even to the extent of endanger-
ing the contract. The defenders will
stnve equally hard for an undertri&.
This deal is from a National Open
Pairs Championship.
Although it was highly unlikely
that West had come ~own to a bare
kin$ ~f beans, decl~r did not rake
into account West's defensive skills.
On the run of the diamonds the
defender casually discarded four
hearts, a club and a spade and, when
the last club was cashed. West tossed
the ace of spades! Convinced that
West's last two cards were hearts,
declarer thought the finesse could be
taken safely. When ic lost to the now
bare king, West had a spade to cash
for down one!
Nonh's Jwnp to two no trump
showed 13-15 points and a balanced hand. and South's four clubs was the
Oetber Convention, ask.in& for aces.
When t.hal located just one ace in
partner's band, South seuled in the
small slam. Although siA no trump
