Hints, tips, and
qui,ps from a
seasoned traveler
So, kids, you're off to Japan.
(Four local students will tour
for nine days -see story
below.)
For starters, don't ask where
you can find the nearest McDon-
ald's -you'll be met with blank
stares. The locals pronounce it
Mal<udonarudo.
Now that this urgent business
is out of the way, you'll be sure to
have a great time.
I lived in Tokyo and Yokohama
for nearly six years. Which means
I am just, as mystified now about
the place as when I first arrived
there. But here are some hints.
• Jlevel in your celebrity -In
Tokyo, you won't stand out much .
But off the beaten trade, in New-
port Beach's sister city of Okaza-
ki, you likely will be the object of
much staring, finger-pointing and
giggling. For most of you, it will
be the closest you will ever come
to feeling like a celebrity. And it
feels pretty good -at least for a
while.
' • forget trying to learn Japan-
ese -Hey, I'm all for learning a
new language. I dropped thou-
sands of dollars studying Japan-
ese during my stay. Then one
day, in the middle of a conversa-
tion with a native, I suddenly
realized I was speaking in Japan-
ese, and my Japanese friend was
speaking to me in English. And
there's the rub: The Japanese
make lt all too Msy to get by in
their country using English, and
most love to try out their conver-
sational skills in a language they
were forced to study for six years.
• Visit a matsurl -Summer is
the time for mat8uri, or festival,
when young and old dress in
their cool cotton kimino and
wooden geta sandals to wa tch
fireworks, listen to taiko drum-
mers, dance and carry shrines
through the streets, eat fried
squid on a stick -and much
more. Not your typical carnival.
• Be true to your school -
When you visit the Japanese
junior high school, pay atte ntion
to ihe details. More than likely,
there will be no grass -just dirt
and concrete. The exterior will
resemble a prison. All students
will be in uniforms. None of the
girls will be wearing makeup or
have pierced e ars.
And when their first sem ester

Underground movement for
utility poles gains momentum
By Jennifer Armstrong, Daily Pilot
NEWPORT BEACH -West
Newport activists are inching
closer to filling the petitions they
need to have their utility poles put
underground.
The wooden poles block the
sidewalks and the views, and the
tangled wires don't make for a
pretty sight. So the area's home-
owners' association has made it a
priority to get rid of them. They
believe placing the utilities
underground will get them closer
to solving the neighborhood's
trademark problems of absentee
property owners and transient
tenants by instilling more pride of
ownership in landlords.
"Once again in West Newport
we're paying for decisions that
were made for better or for worse
many years ago,• said Pete Tarr,
president of the West Newport
Beach Association.
But the city doesn't fund efforts
to put the poles and wires under-
ground. Officials will authorize
the project if 60% of its property
owners agree to pay a share of the
cost. Balboa Coves, Newport
Island, Balboa Island and Corona
del Mar residents got their utili-
ties underground that way.
West Newport resident Dana
Kroeger has organized a continu-
ing drive to get neighbors' signa-
tures in support of paying for an
assessment district. The drive bas
gone on for years now. The
absentee land owners provide a
special challenge, but she thinks
they're finally closing in on the
end.
The group hasn't collected any
signatures between 23rd and 29th
streets. Along parts of Seashore
and Lido Sands drives, they've
collected more than the needed
60%. Overall, Kroeger said, they
have about 50% of the property
owners signed on to the project.
Moving the utility poles under-
ground will cost residents $6,000
to $10,000 each, city estimates say.
Ferguson and wife Anita share
symptoms and strong comeback
By Christopher Goff ard, Daily Pilot
NEWPORT BEACH -It
seemed a startling coincidence.
Only two weeks alter former
Assemblyman Gil Ferguson
returned from heart surgery last
month, bis wife Anita suddenly
came down with the same beart-
attack symptoms.
Pressure across the chest. Pain
in the arms. Pain in the neck.
Her husband rushed her to the
hospital for a battery of tests. The
diagnosis: she's perfectly healthy,
as she has been for years.
"We've been married 49 years,
so we get to mlinn\fck each other,
I guess," said Gil Perguson, the
74-year-old political activist and
former Marine Corps lieutenant
oolonel.
"I can't explain it, and neither
can the doctors,• he said. •1
think people, alter they've lived
together a long time, it's just
lhat they feel each other's feel-
fngs or emotions. When people ,
have been
married for 70
years, one
dies, and the
other dies
three days lat-
er.•
Anita Fer-
guson, 71, who
underwent an
angiogram
during the Gil Ferguson
recent scare,
said she cannot explain it either.
"It was just very strange, very

• Walle down a residential
street -You will be arriving the
day after tanabata matsuri, when
the Japanese display bamboo
branches in their windows or out-
side their homes and hang wishes
written on colorful paper from
tree branches. The custom marks
the one day each year that two
legendary lovers meet in the sky.
Also, getting out of the con-
crete jungle that is Tokyo will
give you an idea of how most
Japanese people live, and open
your senses to an array of unique
sights, sounds and smells that
must be experienced.
• Bring an umbrella -Offi-

months of gooey heat to look for-

have a tough time articulating to
my friends and family how spend-

me, what it was like, etc. Heck,
most people don't care. But in
your short nine days there, try to

at the start, then give their manager
a little bit of th~ shakes before

By Molly Yanity, Daily Pilot
TRABUCO CANYON -With two outs in the bot-
tom of the final inning and the tying run at the plate,
Ed Orozco, the manager of the Newport Beach Little
League 9 and to-year-old All-Stars, fell his heart rac-
ing~ My heart was pounding," he said. •After that
foul ball, it started going 100 miles an hour."
The foul ball was a little dink for which first base-
man Tyler Lance made a diving effort. The ~aliant
display was a just-miss, but it set up a scenano that
Orozco could not have planned.
The Newport Beach All-Stars clinched a 7-3 first
round win over the San Clemente B All-Star team in
gorgeous fashion -third baseman Andy Frank:iel
fielded a hot chopper and fired the ball to Lance for
the putout. Lance, in turn, gunned to catcher Brian
Bechelli as a base runner attempted to score. The
throw was right on, and Bechelli held on while block-
ing the plate for the game-ending double play.
HYou can't give the kids enough credit, but some
times it's the coaches who take it hard," Orozco said.

Newport Beach grabbed the early lead and never
looked back . .
ln the first, Carsten Ball nailed a triple to drive in
Bechelli, who had reached on an error. Ball came
home on the play on an errant throw from the right
fielder.
Orozco's squad continued with a seven-hit attack
that led to at least one run in each inning but one.
And, every single Newport run crossed the plate with
two outs on the scoreboard.
"When we start hitting, it's going to hard for (San
Clemente) to hold us down," Orozco said. "We were
hitting the ball hard, and they made some errors that
gave us opportunities."
San Clemente committed four errors in the six-
inning contest, and each error led to at least run. '
Meanwhile, Mitch Fol.lcs and Ball combined from
the mound to allow just two hits and not a single
earned run between them.
""With our pitching, we only need a few runs to
win," Orozco said. "If they keep it up, we'll be in a lot
of games."
Ball went 2 for 3 with an RBI and two runs scored
to lead the All-Stars.
Michael Orozco had a single and a runs scored,
while Fol.lcs went 2 for 3 with a stolen base.
The ninth spot in the lineup was also productive.
Nicholas Palchikoff knocked a single and scored. Ben
Maggard pinch-hit for Palcbikoff in the fourth and
worked out a walk and scored on a wild pitch. In the
eighth inning, Andrew Beck followed suit by reach-
ing on a pass, stealing second and crossing the plate
on a wild pitch.
The Newport Beach Little League representative
advances to the second round at 5 p.m. Tuesday. The
All-Stars play South Mission Viejo's B Team at Wag-
on Wheel Sports Park (off of Oso Pkwy.)

Newport East ready to
Pony up in the opener
As Manager Marc Martinez
sizes up his Newport East Pony
League All-Star squad, one thing
is clear heading into the Pony
District Il Tournament. Martinez
has a little bit of everything.
He has pitchers.
A strong unit of starting pitch-
ers provides Martinez and his
coaching staff of George Borst
and Lee Marston plenty of flexi-
bility in the lineup. Starters could
included Cavan Cuyler, Jonathan
Martinez, Derek Lewis and Justin
Thomas.
He has hitters.
Josh Yelsey, a member of
Borst's AAA championship Rock-
ies' team, has athleticism and
provides a solid offensive boost.
So does Wes Hockinson, a mem-
ber of AAA runners-up Diamond-
backs.
Martinez has speed.
Cuyler, Billy Eagle and Riley
Watson are formidable threats on
the basepatbs, and have been
throughout regular season play.
·w e have a lot of speed and
good hitting," Martinez said.
"This is just a group of nice kids,
good athletes. I'm looking for-
ward to it."
The Newport East Pony

Laguna Niguel in La Mirada (cor-

No. 1-seeded Matias outlasts CdM's
Anne Yelsey, 6-1, 6-2 in the finals.
FOUNTAIN VALLEY -They were seed-

tion at the Southern California Tennis Asso-
ciation's Southern California Junior Section-
als at Los Caballeros Racquet Club, and
Corona del Mar's 11-year-old Anne Yelsey
had never beaten No. 1-seeded Diane
Matias.
Nothing changed on Sunday. Matias
proved the better in a 6-1, 6-2 victory in a
match which lasted nearly two hours
because almost every point went to deuce
and add-games.
Yelsey earned the finals berth with a 6-2,
6-3 victory over Lindsey Nelson of Orange.
but on Sunday her consistent attack to
Matias' backhand simply failed to make a
significant dent in the armor of the champ.
The two had faced each other often. in 9s,
10s and .i ls, and Yelsey bas yet to solve the
riddle which Matias has developed through
a two-handed forehanded and backhanded
approach. And in this case form held true.
"She tried to rrux il up a little more in the
latter part of the match," noted Anne
Yelsey's dad, Arthur Yelsey. "but Diane was
a little more steadier.
"But it was a great tournament for Anne
and of course we were real proud of her,"
continued the elder Yelsey.
Next on the agenda are some local tour-
naments, highlighted by a July 20 date in
Tucson for the Zonal Championships and
the Challenge Cup in Boca Raton, Fla .. in

•Costa Mesa's Hilleary makes most of WVPP:s Huntington Beach stop.
By Molly Yanity, Daily Pilot
HUNTINGTON BEACH -
When Valinda Hilleary woke
up Saturday morning for work,
she didn't have to get into a
rental car to get there. She did-
n't have to look around the
hotel room for her bathing suit,
and she didn't have to worry
about directions.
For Hilleary, a pro beach
volleyball player, work was in
her backyard.
The Women's Professional
Volleyball Association staged
its Ocean Pacific U.S. Open in
Huntington Beach over the
weekend, just a skip away for
the Costa Mesa resident.
"It's exciting. I called every-
one I know to come out. The
more peoP.Je the better, " the
33-year-6lo Hilleary said. "It's
a rush ." ·
Hilleary has lived in Costa
Mesa for six years and owns a
business -Amazon Glrls Win-
dow Cleaning Service -and
also does massage therapy. So,
her cheering section South of
the pier consisted of friends
and clients.
"We go to cities all over and
people are just like, 'duh,'" she
said. •But here, these are peo-
ple I go to lunch with and they
know what I eat, or people I
work out with and run on the
beach with. They know what's
going on."
Hilleary, who teamed with
Santa Monica native Monique
Oliver, said that the natural
elements of the weekend's
venue also makes this stop one
of her favorites.
Seeded 16th, they finished .
ninth and split a paycheck of
$1,890 .
•I'm used to the beach, and
the wind. It's our element, and
has the elements of the
beach," she said in reference
to the pseudo-beach setups at
several of the tour's stops. For
example, she noted, the venue

The U.S. Open was the sec-
ond of three Southern Califor-
nia stops on the tow.
The first, held at the begin·
nlng of June, was in San
Diego.
At that tournament, Hilleary
got the luxury of staying with
her friend and competitor,
Nancy Reno, who lives just
outside of San Diego.
•we book up with friends so
there's no financial burden,"
eary said. •And it's great
ause you're crawling back
on a plane afterwards."
The next Southern Califor-
nia event will take place in
Hermosa Beach Aug. 8-10.
