L~s Ballet Afriaains performs work that dea~~t1ee life in their native Guinea
ALEX COOLMAN
A Ballet Africains show is measured in I sweat -not only the sweat of the
dancers, whose pyrotechnic dancing
and virtuosic musicianship power the per-
formance, but also that of the audience,
which is typically a bit nunpled by the time
it walks out of the show.
"It's very, very, very, high energy,· said
Rikki Stein, the manager of the the compa-
ny. "You leave tbe theater exhausted."
·Les Ballet Africains, which storms into
OCC's Robert B. Moore Theatre today, aims
to do more than please: the company of 32
Guinean dancers and musicians strives to
electri1y audiences with the' irrepressible
vitality of its sound and choreography.
The company will perform "Evolution"
tonight, a work that charts the course of
Africa from its origms as a traditional soci·
ety to its contemporary condition in the
modern world.
To tell the tal e. the company relies on
elaborate costumes, intricate choreography,

Les Ballet Afrlcalns Is Africa's foremost touring dance company.
"Evolution" draws on African instruments
like the balaphone -the forerunner of the
modem xylophone -and African drums
such as the djembe and the doundoun to stir
up the rhythm of the performance. The per-
formers dance and leap gymnastically. The1.r
costumes are alternately revealing -w ith
many a glistening pec1oral exposed -and
fabulously ornate -with tassels, shells and
feathers coating the dancers' bodies like the •
pltimc1ge or stran9e btrds.

she bad never touched a cbyote

will not be scared of coyotes in

Teacher's fild Rosario Sanchez
sfild Thursday was the first time
many of the children have ever
touched wild animals -stuffed

kayak , where they touched the
water and prud dose attention to
the movement and speed of the

Sanchez sfild blind children
see the world through their sense
of touch. This is why their hands
are so sensitive, and they may
become scared if a person touch-
es them.
u It's like us with our eyes," she
explained. "So, if somebody
comes and puts their hands on
your eyes, it can be very scary."
Strong said il lakes time for
blind children to gain the conii-

these touching experiences pre-
pare them for eventually learning
to· read Braille. That's why the
more they touch, the better.
"If they go home clean, we

The Dunes also plans to

ably increased in the morning.
But this would occur in the long
term, when all the land uses are
built, said Patrick Alford, seruor
planner.
"One of big concerns was the
height of the new proposed pro-
ject," said Patrick Bartolic, a
member of the City's Environ-

mabcally change the view from
every angle of the bay.

affected most by the view
changes will be those at the
existing beach and picnic area at
the Dunes.
In order to minimize problems
. for local wildlife populations, all
of the resort's trash will be ref rig·
erated and placed in closed con-
tainers so as not to attract ani-
mals, said Tun Quinn, the Dunes
project manager.
"We're domg a number of oth-
er things to protect wildlife,"
Quinn said. "We've linuted
height of palm trees to discour-
age (predator bird] nesting."
In addition, Quinn said only
native plant species will be used
for landscaping.
Finally, in terms of water qual-
ity, the report suggested filtering
devices that will intercept runoff
before it drains into the bay.
But despite these proposed
measures, some local environ-
mentalists and residents still
maintain a skeptical attitude
toward the project.
"There wouldn't be any action
