COSTA MESA -A mini-van
was destroyed and a city fire

day afternoon fire at 368 Santa

Costa Mesa Fire officials
praised a 9-year-old boy Sun-
day for alerting bis family to
vacate their duplex when he
noticed a fire starting in bis
fathers van.
·we told him he did a good
job,• Battalion Chief Keith Fuji-
moto said. "When he heard a
crackling noise he went outside
and did something right away."
The blaze, which started
around 3 p.m . Sunday, spread
into the garage and part of the
duplex causing an estimated
$50,000 in damage to the home.
Said Fujimoto, MThey had it
controlled in 10 minutes and it
was covered by four fire engine
companies."
Although a Fire Department
fire truck was parked 60 feet
away, the fire set off an expl,o-
sion that caused an estimated
several thousand dollars in
damage to the fire truck, Fuji-
moto said.
The lid off the tailgate of the
van exploded, sending several
projectiles or cylinders flying
toward the fire engine, he said.

CRANK CALLS
When an automObile's starting syslelll
cannot curt su.fficieDl power to cran1
the engine enough to start it, tbC
problem can usually be traced to the
battery, alternator, voltage regulator, or
the electrical wiring that connect$
these components. the battery's job i~
to provide electrical power for tht
starter motor when the ignition switc~
is turned. The starter motor gear
engages the engine flywheel to crank
and start the engine. The batterr
expends a considerable amount ~
each time it powCIS the starter IDO(()Q
The chariing system, which i~
comprised of the alternator and voltag~
regulator, provides cwrent that restores
the battery to full charge after it h8$
used its energy to run the starter motor:
HINT: Because the alternator and
voltage regulator are usually ,
reliable. any apparent reduction in
current should first prompt a
check of the alternator belt. which
can reduce the cum:nt output of
the alternator and cause the
battery to nm down if it is loose.
DAMPENING QUALITY I
The term "shock absorber" may not be
an apt one for the so-named suspensio"
component. In fact, it is the springs
that actually absorb the road shock
transmitted through the tire, wheel,
hub, and spring mount. However. it ill
the function of the more accurately
named damper to control the spring'$
oscillations. Once they arc damped. the
tire is able to stay in contact with the
road surface under most conditions,
resulting in a more comfortable ride,
prcciae handling, efficient braking, aod
smooch acctlcratioo. When !be dampet
wears out, the spring oscillates at will;
taking the tire with it Penodio
replacement of the damper (shock
absorbers) alleviates a bouncy ride,
poor handling, and slcittish tire
behavior. You'll know right away if
one of your shocks has lost its spring--
your car will give you a distinctly
bumpy ride, usually to one side, once a
shoclc is gooc. Al C&F we don't us<
high pressun sales tactics--we don't
have to, because our customer
satisfaction index brings folks back to
us again and again. Call 646-6910

is under performing, you're probably
right. Come to us for a thorough
cbcclcup and diagnosis to improve your
vehicle's drivlbility. We care for you,
so we work bard to .merit your tJUst.
HINT: White it is generally t.bWght
that gas-charged dampers give a
stiffer ride than hydraulic dampen.

• It isn't just a perfect

ber of events Newport
Harbor's Daniel
Gerlach has mastered
for the decathlon.
· By Molty Yanity, Daily Pilot
If you were stranded on a
deserted island and could only
have one of your possessions
· with you, what would it be?
For Newport Harbor High
senior-to-be Daniel Gerlach, it
would be bis tennis shoes. Well,
maybe it would be a shotput.
" No, perhaps a javelin. A discus?
· • What about the pole?
_ The answer is getting more
and more difficult for Gerlach,
: 17, who has suddenly found a
. niche in the decathlon and will
travel to Baton Rouge, La. next
week to compete in the Junior
OJympics.
•I love to compete in track.
and field," Gerlach said. "If I
. could just do one thing the rest
of my life it would be to com-
pete in the decathlon."
That's a pretty good choice
considering he gets to do 10 dif-
ferent things in that one event.
The decathlon slate includes
the 100-meter dash, 110 high
· hwdles, 400, 1,500, long jump,
high jump, shotput, discus,
javelin and pole vault.
"He's a very good athlete,"
said Bim Barry, Gerlach's mid-
dle distance running coach at
• v Newport Harbor. •At the end of
• the season, we mentioned there
.. was a decathlon for high
• schoolers to him and (Sailor
standout) Chuck. Loo. He took it
. completely upon himself. It's all
self-motivation, which is kind of
unique these days.•
Gerlach said that his mother
.. heard of an amateur decathlon
•• at Mt. Sac, so he entered.
•I ended up doing well in it.
. Actually, I did really well," he

OON LEACH I OAl.Y flt.OT
Newport Harbor senior-to-be Daniel Gerlach takes aim at a far distance for his javelin throw. Gerlach recently learned how to
throw the javelin and teveral other track and field events to compete in the decathlon. His endeavon have him beading for the
Junior Olympics this week in Baton Rouge, La.
there told me about another
one.•
The other "one" was the first
step in the qualification for the
Junior Olympics.
By placing in the top eight at
that event, Gerlach advanced to
the USA 1i'ack & Field Region-
als that were held at 1i'abuco
Hills High.
With first place finishes in
the shotput and javelin, Gerlach
clinched second place at
Regionals.
"Only the top two get to go
(to the Junior Olympics,)" he
said. "I was really surprised. I
was talking to some people
there and they said they'd been
doing it for a few years. I had
experienced just two events
before (a decathlon.)"
As a Sailor, Gerlach compet-
ed in the long jump, triple jump
and the 400. How he has gone
from the mastery of two
decathlon events to a serious
10-event competitor is amazing,
his coaches say.
Eugene Day, who has
instructed the field athletes at
Costa Mesa High the past two
seasons, has helped Gerlach
pick up the events be did not
know.
"He wants to learn," Day
said. "U you want to learn, I
don't care how easy or bard it
is, you will learn."
Bany added, "He works hard
and is totally into track.. He did-
n't stop when (high school)
track was over."
According to Gerlach, be
never gets out of shape.
"I was in good shape for
track. I play dub soccer and
play all year round. I just kept
at it," he said.
Physical fitness may not be a
problem for Gerlach, but what
has seemed to be even more
simple for him is how he pick.ed
up the techniques for eight oth-
er events.
"It gets really technical. Even
the 100, which is just a sprint,
but there's block work and
stuff," he said.
Working with friends of his
family and Day, Gerlach has
learned to pole vault, throw
three different pieces of appara-
tus, jump up instead in addition
to out and to hwdle ... all in
about a month.
"l had two weeks to help
him and last week he already
PRed in six or seven events. ·
"Every time he goes another
inch or a little faster, he gets
excited,• Day said.
Practicing each weekday
from two to fow hours has done
the trick.. but Gerlach plans on
spending even more time mas-
tering the individual techniques
of the complex decathlon.
"I'd love to be a decathlete in
college,• he said .
He hopes bis abilities will be
noticed by college reauiters in
Baton Rouge, but he'd enjoy
attending a university in South-
ern California to be near his
family.
"He's got the build, those
long legs and small body," Day
said. "He hasn't even started
lifting weights. His potential is
unlimited .•
