NEWPORT-MESA -The nation-
ally recognized Orange County High
School of the Arts, which is being
forced to leave its Los Alamitos cam-
pus, may be moving to the Newport-
Mesa Unified School District.
"It's definitely on top of the list,"
Ralph Opacic, principal of the High
School of the Arts, said of the possible
move to Newport-Mesa.
Opacic, who said the move could
take place as soon as next fall, added
that his 500-student school is also con-
sidering sites in Santa Ana.
The 12-year-old school, which
last year was one of only eight
schools nationwide recognized for
arts education by the Nationa l
Endowment for the Arts, must leave
its current location because of a con-
fli ct between the city of Los Alami-
tos and the Los Alamitos Unified
School District.
Opacic, ~e school's founder, also

interested."
Newport-Mesa officials declined to
say where within the district the arts
school might be located.

Despite bemg dismissed by the
city last winter as a •distraction• and
having its alternative plan for an air-
port at El Toro lambasted by the
county, the New Millennium Group
is back with a revised plan and
renewed energy.
"We need to spread the word to
all the supeJVlSors and Nlucate the
public," said an enthusiastic Russell
Niewiarowskl, one of two full-time
members of the group, which will
promote its plan at the Irvine City
Council meellng tonight and on
KOCE-TV next week.
Last January, Balboa Isldnd resi-
dent Charles Griffin, a one-time
engineer who designed airplanes for
a living, and Niewiarowski, a Santa
Ana Heights resident and graphic
artist, formed the group by announc-
ing a plan they deemed a compro-
mise in the North versus South
County war over the El Toro Marine
base.
·we're looking for the ultimate
solution for no jets going over South
County homes," Niewiarowsk.i said.
In a step similar to the board of
supervisors', the duo has since
scaled down its original plan for an
airport. The two are now working to
gain support from the city that most
opposes the thought of any airport
built at El Toro· Irvine.
·They're still going to fight to get
flights out ' of theu backyard,"
N1ewiarowslo said. •North County
residents don't really care what's
happerung with the auport because
they're far enough away that they're
not gomg to be impacted " .
Last winter, the group unsuccess-
fully proposed that the former
marine base's runways be changed
from an ·x· shape to a large ·v·
shape. Th1s would have been
accomplished by extending the
exliiting north-south runway to the
south about 6,000 feet to a total
length of 17 ,000 reet, eliminating the
east-west runway and building a
new runway at a 45·degree angle
· heading southwest:
"People arc more apt to support
a V pattern because they know that
as long as the east-west runway
stays, the controversy stays,"
Niewtarowski explained, referring
to the runway that would lead
planes over lrvme, accordmg to the
county's plan.
However, officials involved m the
auport 1<. ue, including county con-
sultant P&D AVlation and the oty of
Newport Beach, aid the plan was
not feusible because planes amving
from the north would not be able to
cleclr the mountainous terrain.
N1owiarowski said he has found
an answer to the dilemma -creating
V-shaped runway~ that are only
9,867 feel long. "The hort V plan is
more thc:m adequate," Niewtarowski
said. "There's less st~ep of an angle."

Rev. Krause helped to
bridge the culture gap
by both the state and a nonprofit
found.anon that raises approximately
$700,000 annually, and is ad.minis·

Although its board of directors
wants the school to eventually have
its own arts complex and an adminis-
tratlon independe nt of any school dis-
tnct, the foundation will not have
enough money to do that by next fall,
Opacic said. Therefore, a new site is
needed.
"The bottom line is, if they have to
move, wouldn't it be great if they
looked at Newport-Mesa ra ther than
Santa Ana?" said Newport-Mesa
school board member Martha Fluor.

T he operung of the Shops at
Miss1on Viejo is a cause for
celebration for South County
cities and thelt residents. Until
now, the residents or South County
had to dnve north to Fasluon Island
or South Coast Plaza in search of
first-class shopping.
For years, Newport Beach and
its neighbor to the north, both of
V{hich denve huge amounts of
sales tax revenue from thelf respec-
tive malls, benefited from South .
County's Jack of a competitive
shopping center.
The new mall is very similar to
South Coast Plaza both in look and
feel, as well as in the types of stores
-most notably Nordstrom. It
should be cause for concern for
South Coast Plaza and Costa Mesa.
Newport Beach should also pay
attention, but its situation is a little
dillerent. Fashion Island has to
work to stay relevant and exciting
to shoppers. but its huge advantage
is that it is part of a larger, very
successful mixed-use center called
Newport Center.
Most residents probably th.ink of
Newport Center merely as Fashion
Island with its 200 shops. 40 restau-
rants and four departme~t stores.
But the center is much more than
1ust a mdll It is home to hundreds
of busines!>es. cultural mstituuons
like the Orange County Museum of ,
Art, the Librdry and theaters. New-
port Center has golf, tennis and
hedlth clubs. The center's medical
complex is the largest west of the

Most might not realize it, but
1,000 people actually live mside
Newport Center, too. With all these
amenities so close lo their homes, it

for the city and our local schoolS. Last
year, the Four Seasons and the Mar-
xiott alone generated $2.8 million m
hotel tax. The sales tax generated
from shopping at Newport Center
represents 25% of the total sales tax
generated in the city.
The key lo Newport Center's
success is how all of these uses

restaurants at Fasluon Island, as
well as one another. omce workers

located m the hlgb-rise buildings

This synergy does not happen by

Panfic Life, for example, donated
more than $2 million last year to

The businesses in the office build-

A troubling sign, however, is the

It must hdve been the tturd

The Gibson was Hoot Gibson,

was that he had written
MMexicali Rose," a highly for-
gettable ballad.
Hoot really shouldn't have
been there at all. A violin has
no part in a swing band.
Actually, Hoot would have
looked more comfortable
playing his fiddle in a Texas
roadhouse before a bunch of
good old boys and good old
girls. But at the Rendezvous,
he had to play his fiddle mad-
ly as he tried to keep up
when the orchestra played
MTiger Rag."
Somehow that sununer,
Humpy wormed his way into
the English-Gibson duo by
becoming their houseboy or
cook. In that latter category,
Humpy would bring Brick to
the Green Dragon Cafe,
where I worked, for his'Sun-
day morning breakfast.
Now Brick was a drinking
man, and Sunday mornings
were a bit ticklish. So Humpy
had invented a breakfast that
would help Brick face a new
day. Humpy would fill a glass
Wlth Lea & Perrin's sauce, add
a healthy dollop of Tabasco,
break a raw egg m the con-
coction and slide the glass
down to Brick, saying, "Down
the hatch, old buddy."
Bnck would look at the
glass as though it was a coiled
rattlesnake, then grab it and
toss the mixture down. Then
he would lean forward, eyes
closed, and beat the counter
five times very slowly. Then
be would raise his head, eyes
streaming, and say, "Humpy, I
don't know what"I'd do with-
out you."
At the end of the summer
season, the band went back to
Hollywood, and Hwnpy had
made himself so invaluable
that he went along as the
band's manager. Unfortunate-
ly for him, the band broke up,
leaving Humpy Without a job.
However, by Uus time
Humpy had become enam-
ored of the bright tights of the
entertainment world. He
secured a joh as a joke wnter
for a hillbilly comedian, who
really needed a joke writer
becduse as far as I could see,
he was the most unfunny
