Fash.ion Island •popjet, • one of
the city's off-beat but undeniably
distinctive summer attractions set
in the heart of its chief commerce
center.
The idea is simple: 23 small
holes in a raised platform squirt
Dickie-sized globules of water
about four feet in the air in seem-
ingly random sequence.
Yet on any summer day, the
popjet platform will feature 15
giddy kids in various stages of

appeal is, but the kids love it -it
keeps them occupied,• said Joe
Notrica, 36, of Huntington Beach,
watching his daughters Kristina,
6, and Julia, 3. "It's amazing how
it keeps the kids entertained.•
Other parents are more philo-
sophical.
"It's kind of random, and
everything else here is planned,•
said Dick Sittig, whose 2-year-old
daughter Emma was playing.
•And it's not the kind of wet that
parents are afraid their kids will
get drenched."
The popjet, which sits before
Macy's and the Prancoli Restau-
rant, was installed in 1988 as part
of the Fashion Island renovation
project, said Rob Elliott, Senior
Vice President of Urban Planning
and Design for the Irvine Compa-

Davenport's biggest win prior to the

Grayeli's move to ·ucIA payfug off big
• Sunday's finale finds
New York Athletic Club
claiming the crown with
7-5 victory over Harvard.
By Molly Yanity, Dai/;' Pilot
A glance down Sam
Grayeli's water polo
resume, one would
assume that 1993 was the young
man's year. Grayeli was a senior
at Costa Mesa High. He powered
his squad to the CIF final game,
where the Mustangs fell by one
goal in overtime. He earned an
All-American distinction, OIF
Division m Player of the Year
laurels, Pacific Coast League
Most Valuable Player, MVP of
the Junior Olympic squad that
won the championship ...
It goes on and on.
The thing is, it goes on and on
and on, because we just assumed
that 1993 was year.
U the truth be known, when
Grayeli gets in the pool now for
the UCLA Bruins, it's always bis
time.
•rve been pretty successful.
With my size, guys usually aren't
trying to take me out, though,"
Grayell says with a laugh.
Successful indeed.
The year before his
tremendous breakthrough
season, Grayeli did capture the
1992 CIF title with the Mustangs.
After high school, he opted to
go to USC, but transferred to
become a Bruin. In '95, he saw
limited action, but was on hand
as UCLA clinched the college
championship.
They did it again in '96.
What more could he possibly
want.
"We're trying to go for a
three-peat," he said. •cai is the
only one to do that, and they've
done it twice. We can do it, too."
His string of titles crosses two
careers -college and prep -and
Qie difference, he says, is
magnanimous.
"In college it's much more of a
team thing, "'he said. "No team
can rely on just one guy. It's all
about matchups, too. Everyone is
just trying to matchup. •
At the 1997 Men's Summer
National Water Polo
Championships, won by U.. New
York Athletic Oub Sunday,
Grayeli talked about the dmpth of
the UCLA team. the fact that
several of the players on the
varsity team were away on the
junior national team.
•A lot of the younger guys are
stepping up and we've got a real
good chemistry,• he says. In the
first two days of the tournament,
Graylei scored four goals, includ-
ing two against the powerful
Olympic Club of San Fnmdsco.
With the talents of Olympian
Chris Humbert and Kirk Eyerist,
San Francisco defeated Club
Bruin 16-9.
New York took the t itle on
Sunday with a 7-5 victory over
Harvard.

I OAI. Y PILOT
• Newport Harbor High setter getting his feet wet
on the national level, but the competition is very stiff.
By Richard Dunn, Daily Pilot
A vacationers tour Colorado Springs, Colo., headquarters
Sot the Olympic 1i'aining Center, they visit the facility
where hundreds of athletes gather to train, hoping to
catch a glimpse of the next Michael Jolmson.
That brings us to one of 1i'avis Nelson's greatest experiences
thus far while competing for a spot on the U.S. Youth National
Volleyball Team, the introduction bis squad received during a
recent practice, in which a guided tour stopped by.
·And here are tomorrow's Olympians!" the guide explained to
the group, as they started to clap when Nelson, a Newport Harbor
High setter, and his teammates walked by.
"They have attractions every half hour and the tourists come
watch practice a little bit,• Nelson said by telephone Saturday
from Colorado Springs.
It's been a thrill for Nelson on the court, boring away from play.
•it's kind of like a jail because you're not allowed to leave the
gates," be said.
Nelson, a two-time Daily Pilot Dream Teamer, a first-team
All-Sea View League performer la.st season and a second-team
all-leaguer as a sophomore in 1996, would have many more thrllls
if he could stick with the U.S. team, but it will be tough with two
Stanford setters in front of him. .
The three-week training period at the U.S. Olympic 1i'aining
Center will end Aug. 8. From there, those who make the team will
travel to Europe and compete for a week in Italy.
Nelson, who led Coach Dan Glenn's Sailors (11-7) into the
second round of the CIF Southern Section Playoffs in 1997, is one
of 18 players vying for a dozen positions. There were over 100
boys trying out originally.
Brad Griffith of Los Gatos, a 6-foot-5 setter beaded for Stanford,
and Josh Lukens of Mt. Carmel, the setter on the gold-medal
winning Junior Olympic this year, are two players currently ahead
of Nelson on paper. Griffith played on the Junior Olympic team
that won the silver medal.
•1 think I could beat (Griffith) out, but politics have a big
factor," Nelson said. "He's a senior and going to Stanford -that
part kind of hurts me. I'm going to Newport Harbor (as a senior)
and he's going to Stanford. (Lukens) will stay for sure. He's a really
good setter, probably the top 18-and-under setter in the natton."
N elson, who at 6-3 is one of the shortest players on the team.
admits the living conditions aren't quite like home.
•Tuey keep us in dorms, which used to be a military facility,
and they're just horrible," Nelson said. "The beds are horrible,
and it's bard to sleep at night because it's so hot. It was pouring
rain the other day, then it was 85 degrees within minutes, then it
started to hail. The weather conditions here are ridiculous, it's so
off and on."
Nelson, however, has fallen in love with the food, the treatment
of athletes at the training center, and the constant perks of extra
shoes and shorts. U he doesn't make the team (he'll find out nm
week), Nelson will need to dedde whether or not to try out ag.aa
next year.
•He's got next year if he decides to try out again (if he doem't
make the te4m this year)," said his mother, Selby Schriber, a
golfer in the Tua Cup Cla&tlc at Newport Beach Country Chlb oc
Friday, the inaugural event of the Pletcher Jones Motorcers/Da.lly
Pilot Club Championship Serles.
Nelson. though. wants to play on the beach next summer and
hone his skills for a poulble future as a pro on the sand.
•That's why I'm contemplating not playing on this team next
year, but it's a grM.t experience, so it's pretty bard not to accept
it again: he said. ·
Nelson, wbo lost aix pounds in the first week of two-a-<My
practices, said the liltenltty and quickness on the court are by ~

fourth, dropping a 10-7 decision
to Olympic Club of San Frandaco
fn the bronze medal game.
lbe surprise of the tournament
was the nearly unstoppable play
of the Newport Water Polo foun-
dation, a dub team that is com-
prt.d of players from UC Irvine.
Coached by Steve Yancey,
Newport landed itself a top four
flnish by recording a 3-1 mark:
through pool play, its only loss a
