Residents are taken to Ilew Heights
• Majority at Santa Ana Heights meeting say they want
entire community to become part.of Newport Beach.

SANTA ANA HEIGi-ITS -An
overwhelming majority of the 150
residents who attended a communi-
ty meeting on annexation Tuesday
agreed on two things: they want to
be part of Newport Beach and they
want to be unified.
Residents leading the meetitlg
encouraged their neighbors to
begin petitioning to be released
from Costa Mesa's sphere of influ-
ence, in order to eventually join the
Newport Beach annexation. Other-
wise, the community could poten-
tially be split between Costa Mesa
and Newport Beach, based on how
the Orange CoWlty Local Agency
Formation Com.mission has out-
lined where communities would go
in the future. •Newport is stronger
in fighting against (John Wayne
Airport expansion J than Costa
Mesa,• said Santa Ana Heights res-
ident Julie Hernandez.
Although Costa Mesa City Man-
ager Allan Roeder said two weeks
ago that thP city would not be will-
ing to C'hange the sphere of influ-
ence tines to appease residents, at
Tuesday's meeting he said Costa
Mesa LS not 1Il a position to annex its
portion of Sdnta Ana Heights

Another man plotted
searchers' locations on a map;
yet another wrote down in
detail the information they
were passing back. It was all
very calm, very organized,
very professional.
One of the deputies at the
command post, Earl Fawcett,
hailed me when I came in.
•How'd you find this

I asked about Jaryd's

Before heading there, I
checked With Nedra about the
woman. No change; she was
still deeply troubled, still
blaming herself for losing
Jaryd, still afraid to face the
other members of the group.
We offered to put her up
for the night at a hotel in
town, but all she wanted to do
was sit in the truck until
searchers found Jaryd.
As it turned out, that would
be a long wait
It took almost half an hour
to navigate the 15 twisty miles
down to Allyn Atadero's
lodge. I used the time to fig-
ure out what m the world I
was gomg to say to him We

through the facts of a case to

how meticulously the search

• Sometimes it didn't
really get the job done.
Tie late Ralph Reed.
Newport Harbor Hlgh's
first athletic director and
its first football coach, had fun
with football from 1931-1937.
His basic loves were
basketball and track, but
gridiron pressures kept lus
other coaCh.ing desttes limited.
His early day gang of
gridders generally followed
Reed's direction with ample
respect and good will, but
there were some who resented
his style dnd manner of
coaclung.
Some fell that early
Newport grid teams were not
loaded with the super talent
that came along in the
championship '42 season and
it sometimes prompted Reed
to inject some fanciful plays to
fool rivals. It would include
the old Statue of Liberty play
and some razzle-d~zle
reverses. But some times they
didn't work.
As Harbor High aged into
the 1935-37 season, things
were changing. Big playen>,
like the 212-pound fullback Al
liwin and brother Ralph lrwm,
came on deck and helped lead
·the teams to aggrcs51ve
offenses and defenses.
Critics could ay what they
wished, but Reed's bottom line
of grid coaching was sunply to
teach character and have fun.
Sometimes the eager fcllowt
thought they might well have
an Intelligent edge on Reed
when il c.ame to conveying the
exqws1te plays that would
work. .
The initial '37 quarterb~ck,
Rollo McClellan, felt thnt way
onre and approached Reed ln
a forward mannt.!r, only to find
the coach ignoring hls Idea
and quickly hitting him to
fullback.
By season' end, McClellan
figured it was a valued idt?a in
amirung his yardage
tatlltia from th son aft r
running with Reed's plays.
McClellan always laughed
at bunself ov; r that inodent.
SI DELIN E S

Contrell
Coincidentally, McClellan's
longtime friend, Glenn
Thompson, emerged and
became one of the finest -
QBs out of the early days.
After Reed stepped aside in
1938, be allowed a young
coach named Dick Spaulding,
an Escondido High and
Whittier College grad, to take
charge.
The talent was slim. but
Spaulding finished the
two·year period with a 7·6-3
record. As time passed, he
went to Fullerton and
subsequently eGtablished a
noteworthy record. His
Fullerton teams once owned
28 consecutive ledgue
victories. He possibly could
have extended that mark, but
two things stood in his way -
an assignment to become a
principal and severe competi·
hon, coming from a new
coach. named Caire Van
Hoorebek at Anaheim.
Rfled's premier player, Al
Irwm, from 1935, returned
after World War Il to become
the Tur grld chief from
1948..SS. Irwin enjoyed several
outstanding seasons, but left
in 1956 to direct the Orange
Coast College team to an
Eastern Conf erenco
c hampionship. He then bowed
away to coach water sports
and to become athletic
director at UCI.

His main task was directing

His vehicle was an old

the game for free as long es
they stayed on the right side
