hey tend to be world trav-
elers. They're people with
more than a college edu-
cation. They tend to be a
very literary group, and very socially
aware.•
It sounded like she was talking
about Nobel Prize winners or maybe
famous chplomats, but Nancy Gary
Ward was describing typical makers
of craft art. Ward's characterization of
the craft-making type 1s remarkably
generous, but there's a good reason
for it: she's the director of the Artistic
License Pair, a show or artisans' work
that has run in Orange County in one
form or another for more than 30
years.
The fair comes to Estancia Park
today through Sunday, giving New-
port-l'Vlesa residents a chance to
encounter crafty types in the flesh ,
and also to 'investigate the colorful
their products.
Ward, who doe$ som~ weaving
and jewelry-making in add1llon to
coorcLinating the fair, said Arllsllc
License shows off the craft communi-
ty at its best.
"Our show is one of the leading
shows for people who do it on a seri-
ous level, because of the sales we get
and the response from our clientele:
The exhibitors produce crafts that
have aesthetic integrity, but they do
so without the attitudes that some-
times go along with the "high• art
scene, Ward said.
"There's this certain kind of cama-
raderie we have,• Ward said.
•There's not a great sense of compe-
tition with each other, which is not
true in fine arts:
Artistic License will feature about
50 ~ selling a wide variety of
work, including hand-woven gar-
ments and accessories, jewelry,
ceramics, glass, paper and silks. The
items (or sale range from the extreme-
ly affordable -a S2 handmade paper
card -to the more refined and pricey.
An opalescent raku vase might run
several hundred dollars.
For the people who make such
objects, craft work is often a consum-
ing passion rather than a mere hobby.
Newport Beach resident Michael
Crook, who creates very small, very
realistic wood carvings of animals,
said be bas time to work on his pro-
jects because he is retired. But even
CHECK IT OUT I i I i
before he could take it easy, Crook
was involved in creative endeavors.
"I was a combat artist in Vietnam,•
Crook said. And later on in bis career
be operated a family printing business.
The work with wood is only bis latest
activity as an outlet for his expression.
"This is my most recent incarna-
tion,• he said.
Crook originally got into doing the
carving as a side-project derived
from working on ·craftsman style•
glass and wood lighting fixtures. He
would put together the fixtures, and
then stare at the materials he had
remaining on his workbench.
"I had all these little pieces of
wood left over,• Cook said. It was
only a matter of time before he got to
work whittling them into the shape
of rabbits, butterflies and elephants.
"I've always done artistic things,•
Cook said.
Joanna Craft, a Costa Mesa jewel-
ry maker, also started her craft after
pursuing another career. In her case,
though, the transition was more diffi-cult. •
Craft was working as a landscape
architect when Orange County went
bankrupt in the early '90s. The small
firm she worked for relied heavily on
county commissions, which threw it
into financial turmoil, and Craft was
forced to look for new work.
"It was a real transition time for
me,• Craft recalled. •1 thought, 'What
do I want to do?•
Like Crook, Craft had a loog
background doing creative work,
and she decided after some agoniz-
ing that she should launch herself as
a craft artist.
"If I wanted to try this, now was
the perfect time to do it,• she said.
But cracking the market was diffi-
cult for Craft, whose jewelry sold poor-
ly initially and whose judgment about
craft shows lacked discrimination.
"I made tons of mistakes at the
beginning,• she said. •Tuen I started
learning about which were the good
shows.•
She also refined her jewelry-mak-
ing act, developing the distinctive
• style she sells today. Craft's signature
pieces are made from silver, but they.
combine the precious metal with 1 ,
unconventional materials, including,
textiles and bits of text. The jewelry ,,
often incorporates epoxy resin, cre{lt-
ing an object that looks "like a ,
miniature picture under glass,• she
said.
"I love the idea of combining noq-
ttaditional materials with precious '
metal,• Craft said. '
Craft's customers think it's a gqpq
idea as well. She said she continu~ ,
to go to the "Artistic Ucense Fair"'
because the crowds she meets there
-more than those sbe encoiinters..
elsewhere -are able to enjoy her
work. · ''.
*It's a combination of the artists .•.

The Newport Beach Public

arts collection this evening
with an event reference h'bra.rian
Sara Barnicle hopes will attract a
broad crowd, to say the least.
·n·s for anybody who's anybody,"
Barnicle said of the program. •Or
anybody who isn't."
The program, "Celebrate the
Arts,• runs for three days starting
today with a talk by artist Mark
Bennett and offers a series of enter-
taining programs designed to
encourage the public to come see
what the library has to offer.
Bennett, a Los Angeles artist, is
best known for bis series of detailed
floor plans of the "homes• of sit-
coms like •Leave it to Beaver" and
•nie Mary 'JYler Moore Show.• In
drawings he has developed since be
was 1 t. the 43-year-old Hollywood
postal carrier meticulously records
the interior design of homes that
created an idealized vision of Amer-
ican domestic life.
The original impulse for the
drawings, Bennett said, was his
youthful desire to become more like
the families depicted on the screen.
"I wanted to be in those fami-
lies,• he said. ·u I bad the informa-
tion, then I could be one of them."
Bennett believes the identifica-
tion he experienced with shows like
"Bewitched" and "The Jetsons• was
a common phenomenon for televi-
sion viewers.
"Most people did believe that
you could grow up and be like
that,• he said. •Then you do grow
up and you're not like that. It's kind
of sad.•
Unlike most television viewers,
though, Bennett bas at certain
points in his life taken his enthusi-
asm for bis favorite shows to a level
that reshaped bis lifestyle.
There was the time he bought
that yellow 1973 Mustang with the
brown vinyl interior so he could dri-
ve the same car Mary Richards had

rearrange his furniture to make it
more like a sitcom.
At times, television seems to have
been more real for Bennett than life
itself. He didn't attend much of high
school, including his senior prom,
because of his enthusiasm for the
shows he watched.
•1 remember when Wally
(Cleaver) went to the senior prom,•
he noted.
"What's this?" the man behind
the counter wanted to know.
"Oh, it's for "The Partridge Fami-
ly,• Bennett re plied.
But the joke was lost on the man :
behind the counter. •
"They didn't get it," Bennett said .•
"They didn't have any idea what it
was about."
The three-day program aims to
inspire the public to check out its
new additions. Bennett's appearance
tonight will be followed by a day of
family activities and a play reading
Saturday and a Sunday performance
of Baroque and classical mUSic by
The El Real Chamber Players.
Bennett's quirky, televisual sensi-
bility has received a certain degree
of recogrution thanks to the efforts
of the Mark Moore Gallery in Santa
Monica. He has put out one book of
his floor plans and a second, "How
to Live a TV Sitcom Ufe," that pro-
vides readers with the requisite
details for making their real-life
existence more like what they see
on the tube.
There was a long time, though,
when the artist's vision met with
nothing but confusion. Bennett
remembers taking a noor plan to the
company that professionally pre-
pared his blueprints for him.
Barnicle said the additions mainly
served to improve an already solid ..
collection rather than rectifying any •
horrendous gaps in the library's arts !P ~
coverage.

Apparently, bridesmaids
cause more strife and turmoil
than any other cast members.
Brides and grooms get off
pretty clean, but a lot of Pe<>·
ple want to kill bridesmaids.
The wedding nightmares
are too scary to recount. They
also bring back a lot of mem-
ories from my youth. When I
was still in the redlly Big
Apple, I worked as a banquet
waiter at a wedding/bar

Everyone has a wedding
story, but spend two years of
weekends at weddings and
you will see the best and the
worst of the human cond.J-
tion. The catalyst, as so often
happens, is wine and splilts.
Alcohol makes people do
strange lhings, of course, but
there is something about a
wedding and wine that lS
explosive. A guy who is Mr.
Peepers m accounting the
rest of the week will tum into
Robert Downey Jr. after an
hour and a half at ~ wedding.
There were too mtIDy
strange moments to recount,
but most had to do with a
wonderful Puerto Rican bus-
boy named Jose Pagan,
whose nickname was Paco.
He was about 5 feet 8 mches
tall, but 5 feet dcross with
enormous biceps and an
accent that couldn't help but

was Fernando Llamas talk-
ing.
L4te one rught, we were
plodding along, cleaning up
after a wedding that was
long, wild and woolly. From
across the cavernous room,
we heard a high-pitched
scream, urunistakably from
Paco.
When he whipped the .
tablecloth off one of the
rounds, there was an
. extremely l;uge, extremely
drunk woman stretched out
beneath it -out like a light,
with her head propped on
her purse like a bttle pillow.
Paco was near-hysterical and
kept saymg •Toll me she no
dead; please toll me."
I explained to him that
dead people almost never
snore, then bent down and
shook her gently. Someone
suggested sprinkling her face
with waler, which worked.
The woman looked at me,
stared at the ceiling for a
while, then calmly asked us
lo help her up, a job we
unmediately assigned to
Paco. She straightened her .
dress, fluffed her hair, asked
us to call her a cab, then tod·
dled away to the lobby, never
to be seen agdin.
My opinions dbout wed-
dings were formed early. Uh

COSTA MESA -A state
agency announced thiS week
that six Orange County law
enforcement ag~ncies
including the Costa Mesa
Police Deparunent -Were
awarded grant fundlng to
fight speedJng and driving
under the influence. •
Costa Mesa Will ret-e1ve at
least $15,000 for a second
raddr trailer that will be ~t
ed-at various points around
the city. The money is part of
$11 million pledged to com-
muruties across Los Angeles
and Orange counties by the
state Office of 1raffic Safety.
Typically, the radar trailers
cause motonsts to slo-.y down
as they dpprodch the electron-

accidents, said Costa Mesa
police Lt. Dale Birney ..
•e ased on the amount of
traffic we get for both of those
nights we can't possibly
encompass enough area to
stop these people from drink·
Ing and driving,• Birney said.
"The more officers we have,
the more enforcement we can
have toward DUJ arrests."
Birney said the added
resources a re necessary in
Costa Mesd because or the
number of acadents reported.
According to state statistics,
Costa Mesa ranked second in
the nwnber of DUI accidents
among similar-sized cities in
California.
. The last data recorded in
1997 shows there were 81 traf·
fie accidents as a result of
someone driving under the
influence, including one fatal
accident. There were 1,055

DUI arrests reported 1n that
same year.
Birney 88ld the grant likely
will help the de~rtment meet
its goal of reducing DUI acci-
dents by 10% while increas-
ing the amount of DUI arrests
by the same amount.
While Costa Mesa waits for
its share of grant funding from
the state, Newport Beach sUll
must cope with its own pletho-
ra of alcohol-related incidents.
Alcohol-related arrests
have historically been prob:
lematic for the department
because of Newport's beacb-
side allure for visitors.
Although the department
has an enforcement team and
routine DUI checkpoints, it
still must combat a high alco-
hol incident rate in certain
parts of town. About 60% of
arrests in areas such as the
peninsula are alcohol-related,
said Sgt. Mike McDermott.
The department has seen a
reduction in the amount of
OUI-related arrests to about
350 in 1997, but there is
always more that can be done,
McDermott added.
"We have reduced our DUI
numbers, but so has everyone
else,~ he said. "It has always
been an enforcement chal·
lenge for us. But we have
more-people assigned to ow
traffic division than most
dgencies our size.•

Intersection ma

Dunes project
•East Coast Highway
and Marguerite
Avenue would exceed

NOAIO Sc:HwARTZ

NEWPORT BEACH
The congested intersection
of Marguerite Avenue and
East Coast Highway would
be pushed past acceptable
traffic levels if the proposed
Newport Dunes Hotel is
built. according to an envi·
ronmenlal report. And that's
a cause for concern for plan-
ning officials, who say they
will examine the issue very
closely.
Planning commissioners
reviewed the environmental
impact report for the Dunes
proposal at a study session
Thursday. The document
deals mostly with traffic,
views, water quality and
local wildlife.
Following the Planning
Commission's review, a
public comment period and
a final report, the proposed
project will require approval
from the City Council and
the California Coastal Com-
mission in order to proceed.
The Newport Dunes
Resort proposes to build a
400-room hotel and 100-unit
time-share resort on a 30-
acre portion of the existing
recreallonal vehicle resort. It
is estimated that the project
will cost $100 million.
The environmental report
found that the lntersect100-
in the Corona del Mar busi-
ness district would operate
at. an unacceptable level of
service if the hotel is com-
pleted, said Patrick Alfor~
senior planner. · •
However, he added that,
this would occur in the lo~
term, when all develop-
ment approved for the area.
is completed. ~
Although the problem
could be relieved by addin'g 1
more lanes to streets, there
is very little room becaU!S
of the commercial building!t
surrounding the intersec-
tion. And Alford said citf
leaders have no interest in
attemptin9 to displace the·
businesses in favor of ~
widened road.
The issue will be th
city's first test of its newl
revised and highly contro-'
versial Traffic Phasing
Ordinance, which gives tha
city council authority td
"exempt" intersections
from traffic flow improve;
ments when those improveJ ' ments are unacceptable to
the com.muruty. I
But Tim Quinn, Dune~
project manager, pointed
out that the study estimates
only 5% of the traffic gener-
ated by the hotel would use
the mtersechon of Eas(
Coast Highway and Mar-
guerite.
"ln the worst case see~
nario, it would only add 4Q
tnps per day," he saidi ·
"Unfortunately, it's ow pro ..
ject that trips it from accept-'
able to unacceptable.•
