This game is played by writers - especially columnists-who look for impressive quotes to support a pre-formed bias about which they are holding forth. Last week, the thesis ot the Pilot~ Saturday columnist wu that we're all going to bell in a band·~ket because •1n the twisted view of apologetic statists, parental and ecclesiastical influences a.re in'el· evant. even dangerous.• He opened the column with a quote from Thomas Jefferson saying: "Indeed, I tremble for my coun- try when I reflect that God is just." I'm not altogether sure of the relevance of that quote, but I think it is interesting to point out that Jefferson was so impatient with tlie miracles in the New Testament that he wrote bis own version in which what he regard- ed as the mysticiml was expur- gated. He also wrote the following: •Man was destined for society. His morality, therefore, was to be formed to this object. He was endowed with a sense of right and wrong merely relative to this. 1bis sense is as much a part of his nature as the sense of bearing, seeing, feelingi it is the true foundation of morality ... This inanipulation with quotes is one large reason I'm dubious about using public funds for an American history room at the Newport Public Llbrary. I share the reservation voiced by a recent Pilot letter writer that this would be a good idea only if the contents are chosen with some degree of political objectivity. This clearly eliminates the Wednesday and Saturday Pilot columnists. As one of those accused •apologetic statists,,. "I love coming down for my walks, but it's so disgusting some days, I just stay away." said Bal- boa Island resident Elaine Kim. "I just can't stomach the smell." But Niederhaus said a stepped- up cleaning schedule that was put in place at the Newport Pier just as the messy problem worsened and increased enforcement of the fishing regulations in place year- . round at both piers resulted in a relatively smooth summer. "I'd say it was one of the least- complaint summer seasons we've had," Niederhaus said. "Things are looking better." While both piers are leg- endary hot spots for anglers, they h ave very different problems, PARKING CONTINUED FROM 1 Isenman's offer. Niederhaus said. The Newport Pier has far more professional fishers than recre- ational anglers. While the profes- sionals typically work four or five rods at a time to catch as many fish as possible, the recreational or sport fishers are generally families or young children just out to have some tun and catch a fish if they can, Niederhaus said. Niederhaus estimated that at the Newport Pier, the profession- als outnumber the sport fishers three to one, but sport fishers are far more common at the Balboa Pier. The professional anglers tend to be from out of town, are less likely to hear about or obey city rules regarding the pier, and thus cause most of the problems, Niederhaus said. •Tue whole problem boils down to the non-sport fishermen.• he said. Even more ironic is the fact that Isenman didn't enter the contest -someone apparently entered the "My Spot" drawing for him. For, as many who have discon- tinued their athletic associations would attest. it's the relationships -with teammates, coaches, rivals, fellow parents and others linked somehow with the local sports scene -which linger long after the trophies, certificates, photographs and newspaper clip- pings have been buried in some forgotten box. We were living baseball the whole week and the whole town was living it with us.• "I want (CdM) to do as well as we can this year in the Sea View League and for me to keep improving my game individually. I've got to keep moving forward." P~liean Ili11's Colliatie is proinoted • Longtime head pro Ford to replace Colliatie as director of golf. By Richard Dunn, Daily Pilot NEWPORT COAST -Jay Col- liatie, Director of Golf at Pelican Hill Golf Club smce the resort facility opened in Nov. 1991, has been promoted by Western Golf Properties, Inc., to Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the golf course management company based in Scottsdale, Ariz. Western Golf Properties man- ages the Ocean North and Ocean South courses at Pelican Hill for The Irvine Company. Rob Ford, longtime head golf professional at Pelican Hill, has been named to replace Colliatie as Director of Golf. an appointment that became effective Tuesday. Robert Heath, 39, was promoted to bead pro. Colliatie, who bas served as general manager and director of golf since 1990, was surprised by the promotion. "It was a quick departure,· Colliatie said Tuesday from Scottsdale. "I was kind of approached about the job by the company president. The company is doing well, expanding further into the market with an addition- al six clubs to manage (following recent acquisitions)." The company added five new management agreements within a 30-day period this summer and now has 26 golf and country clubs in its portfolio. Colliatie, General Manager and Director of Golf al PGA West CoWatte in Palm Desert before joining PUIUC NOTICES PUILIC NOTICES Western Golf Properties, oversaw the opening of both Pelican Hill courses, as well as Oak Creek Golf Club in Irvine. Colliatie said the selection of Ford was easy. "He had to go through about a 30-second (hiring) process," Col- liatie said. "I don't know anybody Wlth the qualities of Rob Ford. He's a real talented guy and I owe a lot of my success to him and the rest of the team. Pelican Hill made me look real good, and I guess that's why I'm here," he added. Ford, 36, was hired as an as&- tant pro when Pelican Hill opened its Ocean Course (now called Ocean South) nearly six years ago. He was promoted to head pro of the Tom Fazio-designed course in Sept. 1992. "It is easy (to operate) if you have good people working under you, and there is a good staff here," said Ford, a Newport Coast resident. "They're the ones who should get all the credit. They do such a good job, the place can run itself.· Ford's initial task will include overseeing the construction of a conference center to be built at Pelican Hill. Ground is expected to be bro- ken today on a facility that will include a restaurant, lounge, meeting and conference rooms, a wedding chapel and locker rooms with showers. The Pelican Hill pro shop will not change. Ford said the plan is for the conference center to open next summer.
