UPPER NEWPORT BAY
-Construction of the coun-
ty's new interpretive center
will have to wait another five
months, mainly because the
drafted plans were too tall
an order for any contractor to
fill.
After attracting no bid·
ders for the job in June,
county officials have been
repa.ckaglng the plans and
simplifying the bidding
process, design manager
Denny Turner said. The
county Board of Supervisors
is expected to approve those
new plans Sept. 9 and
reopen bids Nov. 5.
That means the ground

won't happen until late Jan-

the center won't open until,
at the earliest, March 1999.

square feet of exhibits, class-

10,000-square-foot educa-

will serve as the centerpiece
of the county's regional park.

credit, once they learned this les-

turned down the volume and
turned up the talent -as the

almost overnight after Tony

My wile and I recently cele-

Last year, I stuck it to themi now

A FINAL WORD on the quo-
tation game, of which I would
warn readers to be aware. This
game is played by writers -
especially columnists-who
look for impressive quotes to
support a pre-formed bias about
which they are holding forth. I
know all about this because I'm
pretty good at it.
A caae hi point. Last week,
the thesis ot the Pilot~ Saturday
columnist wu that we're all
going to bell in a band·~ket
because •1n the twisted view of
apologetic statists, parental and
ecclesiastical influences a.re in'el·
evant. even dangerous.• He
opened the column with a quote
from Thomas Jefferson saying:
"Indeed, I tremble for my coun-
try when I reflect that God is
just."
I'm not altogether sure of the
relevance of that quote, but I
think it is interesting to point out
that Jefferson was so impatient
with tlie miracles in the New
Testament that he wrote bis own
version in which what he regard-
ed as the mysticiml was expur-
gated.
He also wrote the following:
•Man was destined for society.
His morality, therefore, was to be
formed to this object. He was
endowed with a sense of right
and wrong merely relative to
this. 1bis sense is as much a part
of his nature as the sense of
bearing, seeing, feelingi it is the
true foundation of morality ...
This inanipulation with quotes
is one large reason I'm dubious
about using public funds for an
American history room at the
Newport Public Llbrary. I share
the reservation voiced by a
recent Pilot letter writer that this
would be a good idea only if the
contents are chosen with some
degree of political objectivity.
This clearly eliminates the
Wednesday and Saturday Pilot
columnists.
As one of those accused
•apologetic statists,,. I tried to
find a quote from Thomas Jeffer-
son that baseball was truly
ordained by God so I'd feel bet-
ter about going to that double-
header. The best I could do was
Thomas Lasorda, but I'm going

AVOIDING AN EMPTY NEST
• Construction workers
and local residents
make arrangements to
spare the home of a pair
of doves.
By JennW. Annstrong, Dal; Pilot
CORONA Om. MAR-Apafr
c:l dove$ has captured the hearts
of a few dozen contractors remod-
eling a home -so much that
they've rearranged their work
plans to protect the birds' nest.
When aews started construc-
tion last week on Barbara and
Bill Ymgling's house, they ran
into an unusual glitch: the nest
of a dove couple that had tragi-
cally lost their last batch of eggs
to a raven on the side of the
Cape Cod-style home.
The doves had built their new
nest and laid new eggs on the
Yingling's balcony.
The Yinglings first noticed
the female bird building the nest
about five weeks ago, Barbara
said.
•
·we all wanted her to have a
second chance,• she said. "Now
I have 30 men here watching the
progress of this dove. They all
went out of their way to protect
this bird and her babies.•
Contractors covered the bal-
cony to protect the birds from
falling debris and delayed paint-
ing until the baby birds, hatched
Monday, can fly on their own.

But Niederhaus said a stepped-

in place at the Newport Pier just
as the messy problem worsened
and increased enforcement of the
fishing regulations in place year-

relatively smooth summer.
"I'd say it was one of the least-

are looking better."
While both piers are leg-

In addition, Ander said be

Niederhaus said.
The Newport Pier has far more
professional fishers than recre-
ational anglers. While the profes-
sionals typically work four or five
rods at a time to catch as many
fish as possible, the recreational or
sport fishers are generally families
or young children just out to have
some tun and catch a fish if they
can, Niederhaus said.
Niederhaus estimated that at
the Newport Pier, the profession-
als outnumber the sport fishers
three to one, but sport fishers are
far more common at the Balboa
Pier.
The professional anglers tend
to be from out of town, are less
likely to hear about or obey city
rules regarding the pier, and thus
cause most of the problems,
Niederhaus said.
•Tue whole problem boils
down to the non-sport fishermen.•
he said.
Even more ironic is the fact that
Isenman didn't enter the contest
-someone apparently entered
the "My Spot" drawing for him.
"I got a call from someone at
the mall saying I had won some
contest I'd never heard of,• lsen-

NEWPORT BEACH -Game,

This year, the center lost
funding from local schools and
many programs are reportedly In
danger of being eliminated.
"Emulex keeps its eyes open
for opportunities to support local
projects," said Mike Peitler,
Emulex's vice president of sales,
·and since the Environmental
Nature Center is In our back yard

• The new sports season
brings the changing of the
guard -the parents.
W ith fall practice opening
next week, the Class of
2001 is poised to begin
its high school sports odyssey.
For these athletes and their
parents, most of whom have
already forged lasting friendships
through involvement in LiWe
League baseball, Jr. All-Ameri-
can football, AYSO, etc., high
school athletics will provide a
cherished social experience.
For, as many who have discon-
tinued their athletic associations
would attest. it's the relationships
-with teammates, coaches,
rivals, fellow parents and others
linked somehow with the local
sports scene -which linger long
after the trophies, certificates,
photographs and newspaper clip-
pings have been buried in some
forgotten box.
But while each autumn initi-
ates this cycle for an incoming
freshman clas~. it also begins a
time of adjustment for student-
athletes and parents whose last
high school function involved a
cap and gown.
While a few of the most recent
former Newport-Mesa District
athletes will compete at the colle-
giate level. or less seriously as
weekend warriors, the vast
majority have graduated to a col.
lege campus or the work place.
For the former athlete's par-
ents, this transition -hammered
home by the beginning of a new
season in which they won't take
part -often creates a void. No
longer are there afternoon or
evening games, much less week-
end tournaments, to attend. No
more raffle tickets or program
advertisements to sell, no snack
bars or fireworks stands to work.
no banquets to plan.
What's more, the faces they
encountered at these functions
will no longer be as familiar as
those of their favorite neighbors.
More than one parent has
relayed an overwhelming sense
of lament over the conchlsion of

Colliatie, who bas served as

golf since 1990, was surprised by
the promotion.
"It was a quick departure,·

is doing well, expanding further
into the market with an addition-

The company added five new
management agreements within
a 30-day period this summer and
now has 26 golf and country clubs
in its portfolio.

the opening of both Pelican Hill

Colliatie said the selection of
Ford was easy.
"He had to go through about a
30-second (hiring) process," Col-
liatie said.
"I don't know anybody Wlth
the qualities of Rob Ford. He's a
real talented guy and I owe a lot
of my success to him and the rest
of the team. Pelican Hill made me

why I'm here," he added.
Ford, 36, was hired as an as&-

its Ocean Course (now called
Ocean South) nearly six years

"It is easy (to operate) if you

should get all the credit. They do
such a good job, the place can run
itself.·
