Re~idents Still not kappy with Harper school plans
• Those living near the
community center believe
classes should not last
until 10 p.m.
By Michelle Terwilleger, Daily Pilot
NEWPORT-MESA -Home-
owners near the Harper Commu-
nity Center say although school
district officials have tried to
address some concerns, opposition
over the lease of Harper Commu-
nity Center to Coastline Commu-
nity College remains strong.
A plan to address residents'
concerns about increased park-
ing, lighting, noise and traffic
from Coastline computer classes
to be held 8:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. at
Harper will include re-striping
the parking lot, directing students
to use l ?th Street and Tustin
Avenue and increasing fencing
around the playing fields.
•That's fine,• said resident
Howard Denghausen. •1t does to
some extent address some of our
concerns. But they have no busi-
ness running classes that late in a
residential area.~
Denghausen and other resi-
dents have fought the $28,800
lease of five classrooms to Coast-
line Community College.
They argue there are not
enough parking spaces at the site
to handle the program along with
youth sports, Newport-Harbor
Montessori Center, district adult
education classes and non-profit
organizations housed there.
•Who's going to be the
enforcer to say you're not going to
exceed the parking?• Joe Mullin
said. •Who should have priority?•
Residents have also argued the
school district should respond as it
did in 1992 when neighbors of
Eastbluff School complained
about a similar lease to Coastline.
Although the district did not
tum Eastbluff into the day care
neighbors wanted, it did agree to
end Coastline classes at 6 p.m.
"It was good for a neighbor-
hood in Newport Beach, then it's
good for Costa Me;sa, too,• Tom
Gazsi said. •Tuey knew there
would be opposition to this .... It's
extremely, extremely upsetting."
But Superintendent Mac
Bernd said the district was doing
what it could to help the Harper
community.
"What we tried to do was put
ourselves in the residents' shoes
and meet as many of their con-
cerns as possible."
Trustees will vote on the plan
to reduce strain on the neighbor-
hood today at its 7 p.m. meeting
at Harper Community Center,
425 E. 18th St., Costa Mesa.
Raises coming for top
administrators after all

NEWPORT-~SA -School
trustees are poised to give rais-
es to two top administrators
Tuesday, despite recent pronus-
es that restructuring the school
district administration would
not include salary increases for
cabinet members.
Education officials defended
the $2,351 in increases as a way
to keep the salaries competitive
and in line with other district
positions.

Marinapark tenants
off er to pay extra
By Jennifer Armstrong, Daily Pilot
NEWPORT BEACH -Resi-
dents of Marinapark mobile
homes want to save their piece of
bayside paradise from develop-
ment -so much in fact that they
are offering to hike their own
rents by 50%.
City officials will be consider-
ing plans for a hotel, restaurants
and shops to replace the mobile
homes at Marinapark -but they
aren't firing up the bulldozers just
yet. .
The City Council on Monday,
in front of a packed room, voted
to take consultants' bids on how
to make the city-owned• land a
visitor-serving area. But they also
agreed to let the residents submit
their own competitive plan to
stay on the prime bayside site.
Martnapark residents have
been bracing for the decision for
years. k:nowingtheir leases with
the city expire in 2000. Officials
have been loo.lang to make the
peninsula parcel of land consis-
tent with state law, which
requires tidelands developments
to be visitor-friendly.
The 10.71 acres between 15th
and 19th streets also contain a
Girl Scout house, the Balboa
Community Center, the Ameri-
can Legion and tennis courts. A
preliminary analysis showed that
two-thirds of that land should be
classified as tidelands by the state
Lands Commission.
As part of the council's Mon-
day decision, city ofhoals will
also ask the state for a definitive
ruling on whether the mobile
homes can stay there.
Marinapark residents argued
their presence brings more mto
city coffers than a recent consul-
tant study indicates. They pro-
posed a 50% rent increase that
would bring the land's value
equal to the consultant's projec-

Whittier Law School
opens for business
•New $21 million campus
will feature a law library
opened to the public.
By Susan Deemer, Daily Pilot
COSTA MESA -At the
Whittier Law School's old locale,
Gerald Strange used to feel like
he was showing up to work
instead of class, but that all
changed Monday when he
walked onto the well-groomed
grounds of the state-of-the-art,
$21 million campus.
•1bis has much more of a cam-
pus feel.• said Strange, 39, a sec-
ond-year law student who last
year attended classes in an Irvine
office bUilding. •There's a sense
of being in school instead of
reporting to work."
Strange was among hundreds
of students who started classes
Monday at the law school's 15-
acre campus in Costa Mesa. After
22 years in· the Hancock Park
area of Los Angeles, the school
was desperately in need of a larg-
er facility as its population grew
from 450 to 650 students.
Although the 45,000-square-
foot library was virtually empty at
lunchtime -as was the
makeshift cafeteria, which will be
replaced by a permanent struc-
ture sometime in November -
students were buying up their
textbooks and strolling the
grounds.
Strange and other students
praised the school's acoustic.ally
engineered lecture halls with
forum-style seating, itl extensive
library and its peaceful sunound-
ings.

Police help snare alleged swindler
By Tim Grenda, Daily Pilot
COSTA MESA -Costa Mesa
police recently helped nab a
criminal Casanova who over a
two-year period swindled thou-
sands of dollars from Orange
County women with a •sob sto-
ry• about needing money to care
for his gravely ill father, police
said.
The Aug. 4 arrest of Frankie
Szabo on charges of grand theft
by false representations closed
the book on a four-month Costa
Mesa police investigation that
detailed Szabo's crimes of the
heart. said police Lt. Ron Smith.
Although neither Szabo nor any
of bis 11 female vidims lived in
C08t4 Mesa -all or most of the
WOOM!ll and Szabo reportedly live
in South County -police got
involYed tn the case in April when
one of the women 11!pOrted she
bad given Szabo money while eat-
ing dinner in Costa Mesa.
Based on that tip, investigators
quicldy unraveled a Jong list of
other female victims who appar-
ently fell for the same line, Smith
said.
1be woman said she met Szabo
in 1995 while driving on the free-
--OKJ IEAClt
way after he repeatedly waved at
her from his car and she pulled
over to see what he wanted.
The two exchanged phone
numbers and began dating,
Smith said.
The victim said over a one-
year period, she gave Subo more
than $10,000 in several inst.a11-
ments under the impresSion that
the money was helping hfi!r
boyfriend pay for heart surgery
for his father.
What she didn't know, Smith
said, was that Szabo was using
the same line on at least 10 other
women and collecting about
$112,000 from them all.
Szabo, who was describeJ as
well-dressed, articulate and
chamllng by his victims, would
•string the women along• with
cheap jewelry and fraudule nt
appraisal slips that claimed the
items were worth much more,
Smith said.
After an extensive manhunt of
South County, Szabo was arrest-
ed in Aliso Viejo earlier this
month and booked into Orange
County Jail with a $1 million ball,
Smith said.
Szabo is scheduled to be back
in Harbor Court on Wednesday
for a pre-trial bearing.

with expectation of a
winning season.
By Richard Dunn, Daily Pilot
C ORONA DEL MAR -It's
no secret what opponents
will do against Corona del
Mar High's girls tennis team
once the serves and volleys
begin in what should be another
vicious race for the Sea View
League title.
With senior Nina Vaughan
and sophomores Caylan Leslie
and Nadia Vaughan, CdM could
have the best singles lineup in
the CIF Southern Section. That's
why teams will stack its doubles.
•Every time a good team
plays us, they will load up on
doubles,• said CdM Coach Tun
Mang, whose squad is expected
to be ranked No. 1 in the CIP
Division I preseason poll, unless
Dana Hills and Woodbridge
return to the division, which is
not anticipated.
The Sea Kings, 22-3 last year,
were wrapped up in a season·
long power struggle with New-
port Harbor and eventual Sea

which also won the Division m
title.

Peninsula Coach
Ted Cox said after
the Panthers won
their sixth straight

Regardless of
how the team finish.

the club's only senior, should
draw much attention this sea·

reached the semifinals at the

two years in a row, winning Sea

way.
Vaughan upset a highly

•Estancia High football team
eschews rigorous opening of fall
practice to concentrate efforts on
special teams.
By Barry Faulkner, Daily Prlot
COSTA MESA -The Estancia
High football team kicked
off fall practice Monday
morning by, well, kicking off.
Punting, field goals and kick
returns were als<fthe focus of the
Eagles' first official workout of the
1997 campaign, which opens for
Coach John Liebengood's squad
Sept. 11 against Century.
"We're doing things a little bit
differently this year," said
Llebengood, in his 12th season at
the helm. "Our morning practices
are all special teams and condi-
tioning. We'll have all our special
teams in by the end of the first
week.•
The Eagles two-a-day practice
schedule includes a session from
8-10:15 a.m. and second from 2·
4:30 p.m. Players will wear T-
shirts, shorts and helmets for both
workouts, until donning full gear
for the first time Thunday.
The morning work.out begins
in the weight room. where
Llebengood believes bis players
have made great strides during
the off-season. The Eagles conUD-
ued an emphasis on Olympic lifts,
a program they initiated befan
the '96 campaign.
Lifting and going over special
teams, of course, is much less tax-
ing than an emphasis on condi-
tioning (running and grass drilll).
It's the latter which led players in
seasons past to term the first
week or practice •Hell Week.•
"It motivates kids to show up,
because they know we're not
going to kill them," said Lieben-
good, who welcomed just more
than two dozen varsity players, all
bent on ending the program's
absence from the CIF Southern
Section Division VIII Playoffs at
one year. Estancia missed the
postseason last year, despite a 7~
record.

approach wouldn't be possib)e,
