I don't want them to forget that milk comes from cows." Hayakawa said he hopes the fairgrounds will have more communication with Costa Mesa residents who have ptoblems such as noise from the Cirque du Soleil per- formance last spring. "One thing we learned from the problem with the circus was that there was probably miscommunication," Hayakawa said. "The citizens don't realize we're there. We'll listen to them." FRIDAY, AUGUST29, 1"7 ---- Reflecting on oddities while undercover W ell, I'm back. They told you I was on vacation. Not true. I was under- cover, working as a covert oper- ative for the Irvine Ranch Water District. What IRWD didn't know was that I was doing the same for Mesa Consolidated. That's ju.st between you and me by the way. I thought I could pull off the double agent thing, but it was too risky. 3:30 a.m. A starry, starry night in Fairview Park. 1 was making my way to the top of the hill, disguised as a mi.nijlture caboose. OK, a big caboose. I was trying to set up a remote surveillance camera on Santa Ana Heights. But the dome on the Ali Baba motel was in the way. I beard something rustling in the high grass nearby. I froze. "Buffa, what the hell are you doing out here?" Great disguise, I thought. I couldn't see anyone but it didn't matter. I'd know that voice anywhere. HNot that it's any of your business, Soffer, but I couldn't sleep. What are you doing out here, if I may ask?" HStopped by to get a few things," Sid whispered, HDon't tell anybody." HI won't if you won't," I promised. I got my caboose down the hill and back home. Now that the water wars are over, I will put away my starlight scope for another day. Speaking of strange people, some guy went loopy in Ralph's at Triangle Square on Tuesday. Fortunately no one was hurt but he was hurling packages and bottles everywhere, scaring everyone understandably stiff. There's nothing I hate more when I'm trying to read the fat grams on a label than a large jar of chunky salsa flying over the top of the shelves and exploding at my feet. The interesting part is that when the police arrived, the food warrior was covered head-to-toe in tomato sauce. With my interest in tomato sauce, I want to know exactly what this guy was planning I Former Secretary of Agricul- ture Mike Espy is having a bad week, indicted on 39 counts of misconduct by a federal grand jury. Espy's name always catch- es my eye because he played a part in one of my favorite, and oddest, episodes as mayor. Dur- ing my first term, the NRA held its national annual meeting in Anaheim, capped off by a black- tie dinner at the Anaheim Hilton. I was invited to be a guest at the head table along with NRA dignitaries and a few members of Congress. Mike Espy was a congressman from Mississippi at the time and we ended up sit- ting beside each other. Espy was something of a political anomaly and very popular with the NRA - a black congressman from the deep South who was an avid gun owner and adamantly anti- gun control -in addition to being a very bright, personable young man. The ballroom was bursting at the seams with upward of 1,500 people. At the appointed hour, the head table-ites were gathered Just outside the door and given our instructions. When the house lights dimmed, we'd be introduced one at a time over the PA and were to move briskly to our designated seat on the dais. To make the experience as uncomfortable as possible, a spotlight would pick each of us up as we stepped through the door. Mike Espy was introduced to enthusiastic applause, then it was my turn. The announcer's voice boomed, "Ladies and Gentlemen, please welcome the honorable Peter Buffa -the mayor of Costa Rica." When the spotlight found me, I was already laughing bard, Wlth any semblance of dignity long gone. What was more odd then being called the mayor of Costa Rica was that since no one knew me from Adam, the audience was accepting at first and applauded politely. But as I made the long walk to the head table, the handful of people who knew me explained the announcer's fumble at one table, then another, until a wave of laughter rolled across the room. By the time I reached my seat, 1,500 people were howling and applauding wildly. As I sat down, Espy leaned over and said, ~1·m sorry - what are you the mayor of?" I've had a lot of introductions over the years, but that will always be the bell ringer. I gotta go. • PETER 8UFFA is mayor of Costa Mesa. Leave it to Hollywood 'Leave It To Beaver" is a sweet movie for young kids and will bring back memoties for their parents (grandpar- ents?) of the early 1960s 1V show it was based upon. The Cleaver fami- ly lives in a small town when!the houses have SUMDDe Perez white pick.et rences and milk is delivered in bottlea. The boys are cute and polite, the mom wears pearls while hoking and cleaning. Everything and everybody is frelll·saubbed and wholesome, altboogh Dad's passions are stined as he watches Mom vacu- um (is th.is why the movie is rated PG for "some sensuality"?). The boys, Wally and Beaver, get into minor trouble But everything buns out fine, with Dad giving the Big Lesson Speech at the end. The actors, espeoally the chil- ~ ~~t/na ctren. are well-cast and do their best to re-create the original c:baracteB. The cameos by the ortgina1 actors who played June Cleaver, Eddie Haskell and Lumpy (Oarence) Rutbelford are a Dice touch.
