book that deals primarily
with the experiences of

But Englarider, who will

Though he was raised in an
Orthodox community in

well," Glenn said. •
They managed to reach 31 serves

"The thing about the playoffs lS that
they are so bunched together," Glenn
said. MYou have to be ready for
anything That's what makes it so fun."
Despite falling behind, 5-0, to the
pesky Matadors, Newport Harbor easily
managed to get back in the game on the
strong play of Signe Hillyard, Govaars
and Dill . In a gdme played by everyone, Apnl
Ross led the Sailors with nine kills,
Krista Dill had eight, Brenda Waterman
had six and Taylor Govaars added five
for the ctiviston's No. 1 seed.
"We've been trying some new things
with Krista the past few days," Glenn
said "She really did a good job doing
some of those new things tonight."

SPORTS HALL OF FAME
CELEBRATING THE MILLENNIUM
·KEVIN
McCLEL~~~
Newport Harbor
• It was a football career cu~ short, but certainly not
lacking in major credentials for this Sailors' standout.
RltlWID DUNN ·~------~~~~~~------lbly Piiot
egardless of one's ill
peed, strength and
avvy, the violent
nature of football can end the
career of even the game's best
players.
· KeVin McClelland (Newport
Harbor High) wasn't ready to
give up the sport, but after three
concussions during his redshirt
freshman season at Boise State,
it was time to reevaluate his liJe.
A member of the Big Sky
Conference All-Academic
team m 1987, McClelland,
a bone-crushing 6-foot-2,
235-poW1d linebacker with
aspirations of playing in the NFL,
was forced to stop the helmet
bashing.
H It was one Of the
most difficult decisions
I've ever made,"
McClellcUld said of
terminating his
collegiate football
career, after
expenencing
post-concussion
syndrome
years earlier made a bigger
impact.
"From ~y point of view, the
greatest team Newport Harbor
ever Mid was in my sophomore
year (fall of '83)," said
McClelland, who was called up
!o the varsity that season as an
insurance policy for running •
back Steve Brazas.
•A lot of what Coach
Giddings taught was very
instrumental to a lot of peoples'
success," added McClelland,
whose Sailor teams went 27-7-3
in three years. "Giddings
brought in a formalized standard
of football to the table.•
McClelland earned a full
scholarship to Boise State, at the
timed Division I-AA school
where he played linebacker and
tight end.
Before arriving in
Idaho, McClelland
was the Defensive
Player of the Game lri
the 1986 Orange
County All-Stdr
football game at
Orange Coast College,
a 28-13 victory for the
South, which also
included Foley. "It took me a long
time to gel over that
deasion ... several
years. But I f cit like it Kevin McClelland
McClelland
intercepted a key pass
late in the first hall
and contributed was the best thing I
ever did. It wds so eye-opening,
because I was so narrow-minded
about one thing and one thing
only, and that was football Once
I was past (the post-career
depression), I had more balance
in my life and J started to focus
on family, fnends and
education.•
Considered an excellent
athlete under Newport Harbor
football coach Mike G1dd.ings,
McClelland was a three-year
varsity performer who started on
both sides of the ball his junior
and seruor years.
The Satlors won Sea View
League championships all three
years McClelland suited up
(1983 through '85). Giddings
used him on offense at backup
quarterback, fullback, tailback
and tight end, but McClelland
preferred ripping mto ballcarriers
and made All·CIF Southern
Section Central Conference as
an outside 'backer m the autumn
of 1985, when the Tars also
featured quarterback Shane
Foley (USC) and wide receiver
Mark Crcllg (Long Beach State).
"What made me believe
(m ~ pro football future) is thdt,
when I was in high school ana
college, J had size," McClelland
· said. "I did not necessarily have
the quintessential linebacker
speed, but I had speed, a solid
understanding of the game and
I could hit and hit well."
As a seruor, McClelland
rushed for 385 yards m 71 canies
and caught 55 of Foley's passes
for 577 yards, scoring nine
touchdowns -fi ve receiving,
four via U1e ground -as the
Tars finished 10·3 and reached
the CIF Central Conference
semilinals. But the Sailors two
severaJ unportant tackles on
third down for the South The
North, w1th its vaunted backfield
of Ray Pallares (VaJenaa)
and Chuck Weatherspoon
(La Habra), was stuffed in the
first half for a combined 17
rushing yards as McClelland
made his presence felt.
"That was a very defining
moment," said McClelland, an
easy ch0tce for All-Sea View
League honors that year.
McClelland, who ctidn't play
football until the seventh grade,
played basketball and baseball
at Newport Harbor and excelled
in all three sports -until he
decided to concentrate on
football year-roW1d.
"I enjoyed hitting people,
getting down on the ground,
getting back up and getting
back to the huddle," he said of
his first Pop Warner experience.
McClelland's career, howevec;:
was cut short because of head
injuries.
"It's kind of a sad (story) in
terms of sports, but on the flip
side. (retiring from football early
m college) was the best thing
that ever happened to me,•
McClelland said. "We all wanted
to play sports forever."
These days, McClelland owns
a software development
company that he launched 2112
years ago with a business
partner called Global Resource
Corp., based in Irvine.
McClelland, who received his•
busmess degree from San Diego

You can be pushed by
wind or pushed by a propeller,
however any way you push it,
it's still called a boat. As
mentioned previously, the
propeller people and the wind
people seem to disagree on
just which is the best way to
traverse the salt.
The windys say that the
propeller people jump in their
bOdts, set ~ail. and they're
already there. The only
common denominator is they
use the same water.
· Jeff Clarke, left, Tepresenting New Visions, addresses the
volunteers. Above, ALYC member Pat Collins explains the
helm to his guests on board his Islander Ketch, Morning Star.
Personally, I like them both.
However, when it comes lo
racing boats, I prefer the dJt of
sailing lo the art of whoever
bas the most horsepower.
I know a windless boater
nam~d Sandy Bleier and he
said, "You write a lot about
sailing and I prefer
powerboats."
Sandy is one of those guys
(retired) who's on his boat
twice a day. His pnstine
machine is perfecta -she's
waxed and she's ready. Blond
carpeting, blond cabinetry,
even a beautiful blonde wife
named Monique. The 48-fool
motoryacht has everything
from an ice machine lo your
fondest dream, but it sWl
needs fuel.
Another fnend of mine is
Larry Walter. La)TY owns a
C'&C 40 called Cha Cha Cha.
Larry Jumps in his boat and all
be needs is a puff or two.
Guess Whal? they both get
dn equal amount of enjoyment
while sharing the same water,
so let's not be too judgmental.
It's a big ocean out there with
room enough for both puffs
and propellers.
