are expected to approve a solu-

The city is urging the City

·Those who live in the area,
bounded by Newport Boulevard,

motorists who rot through the
area on their way to the Costa

The newest plan calls for
among other things, painting
lines on streets that would visual-

install two, four-way stop signs,
close two streets and possibly re-
route the number 53 bus route
from Orange Avenue to Newport

The council normally meets on

Labor Day holiday they will meet
Tuesday in council chambers at
6:30 p.m., 77 Fair Drive.
Also on Tuesday, the council
will give a second reading to an ·

"the PCL over the ROtStfaJe years -
•Estancia will need more than
record-setting Janies Dawldns to
get past quality PCL competition
and into the CIF Div. VIlI Playoffs.
By Barry Faulkner, Daily Pilot

COSTA MESA -The preleague schedule
for most high school football t'eams is a time
to develop chemistry, personnel and
confidence, while eradicating as many
deficiencies as possible before encountering
league competition. ·
Reqmtly for Estancia High, however, it's
been more of an optjcal illusion.
Coach John Liebengood's Eagles have
forged a 12-3 record the last three seasons in
preleague play, including a 5-0 mark last fall
against teams ~at finished a combined
10-49-1. They have, however, lost 16 of their
last 20 Pacif\c Coast League cout~rts.
The 1996 preleague run featw-ed an
ere..:popping 40-point per-game a~erage,
including-a school single-game record 63
against overmatched Ocean View, IWla an
Orange County-leading 2,047 rushing yards.
But as w\_th objects viewed through a
side·view mirror, adversity was much eloser
than it appeared.
Three straight losses to th' PCL's upper
division followed-by a comlJi.ned 104-21
margin -effectively kill.tn1J the Eagles' bid
for baclC-to-back playoff appearances.
The schedule'may ltold similar inevifability
this season, with powerful Laguna Hills, 1 experienced and talen ted CoSla t-1esa, and
' 'reigr:ling unbeaten CIF Southern Section •
OiViSion vm champion Aliso Niguel
awaiting the first three Frid4ys of league.
"I think the kids feel comfortable with
their situation,• said Liebengood, who enters
his 12th season at the Estancia with guarded
optimiftll. "They know they play in a tough
league and things won't come easily."
'Hoping to soften the hard road ahead,
Liebengo00 ~d his staff have tinkered with
a smashmouth double wing offense that
prodoced an J!standa-record 294 points last
season and 3,~03 of its 3,540 yards on the
ground. · Allning to circumvent the consistent
eight-, nine-, lO-, even l 1-man fronts
employed against an Eagle offense that
completed just 16 passes last fall (in 59
at1eIJlpts), Liebmlg<>t>d, and new offensive
coordinator Kent Paul, vow to call for 10-15
passes a game. ·
•we want to be able to dictate more how
pt<>ple defend us," Liebengood ~lained.
"ff we see some of the defenses teams
showed against us last 'year, we're going to
bit them where they're weak. If they want to
stay in th~e nine·man fronts, we want to
make them move." .
Defenses will, no doubt, focus first on
senior wingbock James Dawkins, who
