Tabloids scarce at ·local markets
•Many owners pull the
newspapers after death
of Princess Diana, but
at least one vows to
continue selling them.
By lim Grenda, Daily Pilot
NEWPORT BEACH
Fans of tabloids like the
National Enquirer, Star and
The Globe were hard-pressed to find their favorite maga-
zines locally this week, as
most local grocery store Chains
pulled the tabloids from their
shelves after the death of
Princess Diana.
But the owner of the Balboa
Market vows to continue
stocking the controversial pub-
lications in bis store and called
the grocery store chains that
have temporarily stopped
stocking the magazines •hyp-
ocrites. •
Since the princess' death
last Saturday -in a car crash

photographers for causing -

employees said, and on Friday,
the check-out stands stood
empty.
The absence of the tabloids
doesn't bother Angela Palmer
of Costa Mesa, who likened
the magazines to •journalistic
vultures.•
•For me, it's not really about
Princess Diana,• Palmer said.
"I found the tabloids to be
totally disgusting long before
she was killed. I'm glad the
stores aren't selling them now,
but I'm sure they'll be back."
While most large stores
have pulled the tabloids off
their shelves, George Toth said
his Balboa Market will contin-
ue to sell the National J?lquir-
er, Globe and other tabloids,
no matter what.
•we believe in freedom of
the press here," Toth said on
Friday. •They are licensed,
legitimate publications in tJ;le
United States, and I th.ink it's
very hypocritical of the large
chains [to pull them].•
Toth said the tabloids
"haven't been selling at all this
week" but that the grocery
store chains are wrong for
buckling to public pressure.
•They make money off
them, then they pull them, and
when they put them back on
the shelves, you'll see what
kind of S<:uql bags they really
are," Tuth said.

INSPECTING FOR
SAFETY'S SAKE
One of tl)e best p~eventive steps
car owners can take is to have their
auto technicians inspect their
vehicles on a yearly bash. This
inspection can prevent unnece sary
breakdowns, as well as catch minor
problems before they become
major ones. An inspection of this
sort involves a visual check for
cracked brake hoses. fluid leaks,
rust holes in the exhaust system,
leaJcjng or worn shock absorbers.
unusual tire wear. wt>m front-end
parts. corrosion build-up on battery
terminals. frayed electrical wi res.
burnt transmission fluid, and the
like. It is a good idea to ask for
this type of inspection at the same
time that oil is being changed. the
tires are being rotated, or the
brakes are being inspected.
HINT: The visual inspection
described above shollld only take
about one-half hour.

Thomason, a 6-foot-4 1/2,

against Chicago on Monday Night

· went down with an injured knee.
Thomason, a University of Oregon

the Cincinnati Bengals, caught five Brett

1-yard second-quarter touchdown.
Though he received some derision
from the broadcasting team for his

a recent tradition at Lambeau Field,
Thomason may have ample·opportunities
to improve his touchdown celebration
technique, until Chmura recovers.
Though Thomason is the most high
profile of the CdM football alumni still
playing, the Sea Kings are well
represented on the collegiate level.
J .R. Walz is a senior running back at
Holy Cross, where he has led the
Crusaders in rushing each of the past
three seasons.
Reinstated after serving a two-game
NCAA suspension for gambling at the
close of the '96 Ca.mpaign, Walz rushed
for 508 yards and two TDs and caught
· 17 passes for 144 more yards last ~eason.
He is expected to start in the backfield
Sept. 13, when the Crusaders open their
·season at Towson State University.
Georgetown sophomore Josh Walz, a
quarterback with the Sea Kings who
moved from defensive back to receiver
this season for the Hoyas, is slated to
meet bis brother's team Sept. 20.
Ironically, the younger Walz is
competing with former CdM teammate
George Sumner, a Hoya freshman, for
time at the receiver spot.
Walz is not listed on the two-deep
chart, according to Georgetown officials,
while Sumner is among three incoming

The Division I-AA Hoyas open thelJ'

Richy Nichols and Nick. Schaumberg,
distinguished members of the 1995 Five

When you think
of linebackers,

•Newport's trademark
can be seen on several
fronts in the college arena.
By Barry Faulkner, Daily Piiot
T he tradition of strong
linebackers has become
almost as rich as that of
winning at Newport Harbor
High, which currently has four
former linebackers competing
at the collegiate level.
Most n~teworthy is former
All-CIF standout Steve Gonzales,
a 6-2, 236-pound returning
starter at inside linebacker at
Hawaii.
Gonzales, who played two
seasons at OCC after starting
three years as a varsity starter
with Coach Jeff Brinkley's
Sailors, started nine games last
fall for the Rainbow Warriors and
·saw action in the school's other
three.
He was third on the team with
77 tackles, including five for
losses, and returned his only
interception 79 yards for a
touchdown against Western
Athletic Conference rival BYU.
Gonzales had three solo
tackles and one assist in Hawaii's
17-3 season-opening victory over
Minnesota last week.
Additional former Newport
linebackers Matt Bums (Wagner
College) and Dan McDonough
(St. Mary's) are still patrolling
the field at their familiar position,
while Mike Freeman. who
played linebacker and tight end
on the 1994 CIF Southern 1 Section Division V champiODS,
is now a fullback at Ca.I.
Bums is a 6-0, 210-pound
senior for the Staten Island-based
Seahawlcs, who compete on the
Division I-AA level.
McDonough, a member of the
'94 CIF champs, as well as the
'92 runners-up, is a returning
starter as a 6-2, 220-j>ound junior
for the I-AA Gaels.
Freeman, recruited by former
Golden Bear and cunent San
Francisco 49ers coach Steve
Mariucci, was reportedly close to
earrung a starting role in spring
practice. But the 6-1, 235-pound
Orange Coast College transfer is
currently listed at No. 3 on the
depth chart, as the Bears headed
into Saturday's season opener at
Houston.
Former Sailor Keith Gray is a
6-3, 270-pound Junior offensive
tackle at I-AA power Eastern
Kentucky. The former OCC
standout accompanied the
Colonels' to their season opener
Saturday at Troy State.
Former Newport quarterback
Ryan Smith, missed nearly all of
his junior season at Claremont-
Mudd-Scripps with a broken
collarbone, though he completed
6 of 13 passes for 59 yards in the
Stags' final game of the season .
He bas shifted to wide
receiver for this season. The 6-1,
185-pounder entered Saturday's
season opener against the U.S.
Merchant Marine Academy as a
backup flanker.
Scott Sandstrom, a starting
corner on the Tars' unbeaten '94
squad. IJl.lllally planned to
continue his career at Redlands,
but has now landed at Oa:idental.
where he will compete for
playing time for the ngers.
Former Newport and OCC
punter Gregg Kaiser has left the
trrEP program, where he spent
last season as a backup.
On1he community college
level, Scott Gray, a 6-3,
220-pound sophomore ~g
outside linebacker, bead.lin'€s a
group of former Sailqrs now at
Orange Coast.
Others Harbor products listed
on Coach Bill Workman's Pirate

Corona del Mar's

C orona del Mar's girls
basketball coach Elbert
Davis has shown a stroke
of bnlliance. DaVIS made a great

But Odv1s had no idea how
good his choice was.
Slunner moved to Southern

ago from Southeastern Oh,io
from where she is a native,
played, taught and coached.
Skinner was a shooting guard
for Athens High School, went to
Ohio Uruversity and taught at
her alma mater for a year before
headmg West
She was a successful junior
high coach, leading her team to
a league championship last
season and pulling off three
last-second wins over the
second-place team.
Skmner's resume was enough
to convince DaVls, but what the
first-year Sea King coach can not
see on a resume is the biggest
influence on Skinner's playing
career, coaching career and
teaching career -her high
school hoop mentor, Tim Smith.
What Davis will not know
until Skinner stands before her
teammates is that she believes
basketball is a tool to building a
successful life, something that
Smith drilled into her.
Davis does not know that
Skinner believes the keys to a
strong basketball team are
defense and rebounding. In
other words, the offensive glory
is great, but 1t is the hard work
and the grit required to win ... in
every aspect of life.
Davis will not recognize
"Sm.ithisms" when Skinner
shouts them at her team from the
bench, or when she .is inspiring
her team members to give
themselves for the love of a
game, for the development of
their own person and for their
teammates.
Davis will hear her say things
like, "No one is goµtg to jump
out of those bleachers and do it
for you,• and "To have what you
have not, you must do what you
have not done.•
He'll overhear her say things
like, "Take your ultimate dream
and ask, 'Why not?'·
Parents and Corona del Mar
fans will never know 1i.m Smith.
They'll never have the opportu-
nity to bear his powerful
motivational speeches, his
booming voice that raises
goosebumps or see the emotion
that spills from t.h.i5 rare man
when he is coaching.
What they will get to know,

Dennerline leads the way.
r; MAR
CORONA DEL MAR -For an
encore, it will be tough for Corona
_ del Mac High's boys cross country
team to repeat as state champi-
. ons.
, But the higher the bar is raised,
; the greater the expectations -
jwt the way CdM Coach Bill
· Sumner likes it. •we got lucky, and we (also)
came through last year,• Sumner
· said of bis team's remarkable run
~to the CIF State Division IV cham-
-pionsb.ip, following third-place
: finish.es in the Sea View League
'and CIF Southern Section Divi·

week got tougher and we got bet-
ter. The harder we tried, the luck-
ier we got. We only won by one
point (over Granada High of Liv-
ermore, 122-123), but nobody
remembers that. All anybody
remember.; is the state champi-
onship. Nobody remember.; we
were third in league and third in
CIF, because what sticks out is the
state title and the big dance.•
For a curtain call, the Sea
Kings this fall will send out
senior.; Matt Dennerline, Brian
Coombe and Brian Kramer, sig-
nificant contributors to the state
championship team. Last ·year
was the school's second state title
in boys cross country (along with
1989).
The Sea.Kings, 61-13 in league
dual meets since Sumner took
over the program in 198-4 from
Brian Hunsaker, edged Granada
The 36" Annual
"l<JNG Of THE SANDCASTLES'
and Nordhoff last year in the state
meet, after finishing behind
Nordhoff at the.CIF Finals.
Once CdM gets out of league
competition, it actuall,y gets easi-
er. The Sea Kings face schools
closer to their .own size in the
postseason, and th.is year's Sea
View race should be no different.
~santa Margarita and El Toro
were the two teams on top last
year (respectively) and it still
looks like they're the teams to
beat: Sumner said. ~Newport
Harbor returns a lot of good run-
ner.; and the school's also getting
bigger, so it's going to be tough to
compete with (the Sailor.;) from
now on:
CdM, with Dennerline clearly
its leader, will also feature sopho-
more Kevin Kramer, junior Aaron
Gruber, senior Ken Schwan {an
Eagle Scout) and sophomore David
Mittman, all ol whom are expected
to _ro_ynd out the top seven.
But Stunner suggested that no
position is secure and senior

' ' ' ' ' ' ' ' ' ' ' ' ' ' ' ' ' ' ' ' ~-------------------------~ Tarun Bajaj, sophomore Chris
Edwards and freshmen Chase
Emery, Josh Ludrnir and Josh
Yelsey are dosing in on a highly
coveted top-seven spot.
"There are a lot of newcomers
who (No. 7 runner Mittman} is.
going to have to knock off,~ Sum-
ner said. "There's going to be
some struggling. Our top four
(Dennerline, Coombe.. Brian
Kramer and Kevin Kramer) are
probably pretty secure, and Gru-
ber should make the· top seven,
but I don't know about the lop
five .·
With Jason Rogers and Tyler
Beardslee graduated, the Sea
Kings will be forced to fill two
huge holes up front.
Dennerline, who stepped up at
the state ~t and finished as
CdM's liftlt" man when Richard
Hossfeld "sputtered,• should fill
one of them. "I'm a little con-
cerned about a front runner this
year, but (DennerlineJ may be
that,• Sumner said.
Corona del Mar, ranked ninth
in the CCF Division IV presea.son
poll, behinci,..amoag others Costa
Mesa and 8-tancia, has finished
in the top three in CIF seven o(
the last nine years.
"It will be tough to make it into
the top three in our league, but
that's our goal ... and anoth~r trip
to the state championships,•
Sumner said. "El Toro and Santa
Margarita are the league's top
two, then us, Newport Harbor
and Irvine will fight for third. The
Sea View League's a tough neigh-
borhood."
Every Sea View boys and girls
cross country tea.m last year,
except lrvine's boys, received at
least a wild cclrd lnto the CIF pre-
liminaries.
"Costa Mesa." Sumner said,
adding fuel for the future, " ... they
get an easy ride (to C lF). But
those days are over next year (as
CdM eii.ters the Pacific Coast
League). Newport Haibor's going
to be good this year, but I don't
think they're one of the top teams
in the county.·
Dennerline, described by Sum·
ner as a "blue-collar worker" on
the course, has a slim preseason
lead over teammates Coombe
and Brian Kramer. ·And there's
probably no gap between Brian
Coombe and Brian Kramir, •
Sumner said. "The only differ-
ence is that Coombe has more
experience than Kramer.·
