Toxic cleanup

By Susan Deemer, Daily Pilot
COSTA MESA -l'wo former city mayors have
joined the quest to save the Mesa theater from being
tom down· and built into a Borders Books and Music:
store but now that petroleum has recently been
found on the site the issue could be moot.
City officials reported Monday that petroleum has
been discovered on the city-owned site. remnants of
a fonner gas station there. Developers, who are buy·
ing the city lot for almost $300,000 and other private·
ly owned portions of that block, must decide whether
the cost of cleaning up that property is worth pw-
chasing it. U the cleanup exceeds $50,000, develop·
ers will have the option of renegotiating the final
price with the city, paying for the cleanup themselves
or dropping the deal altogether. .
Additionally, lonner mayors Robert M. Wilson and
Al 1Pin.kley have joined residents Tom Sweatt and
Dean Ruoff, who initiated the efforts, urging the city
to back them in saving the Mesa theater on Newport

Plans outlined for low-cost,
new senior housing project
·By Jennifer Armstrong, Daily Pilot
NEWPORT BEACH
Seniors may soon get the
chance to buy low-priced hous-
ing among Newport Center's
'(ast amenities -and if they do
they'll be living on one of the
city's remaining scraps of open
space.
,The City Council Monday
approved preliminary steps
toward an Irvine Co. proposal to
build affordable senior housing
on the former site of Ford Aero-
nautics off MacArthur Boule-
vard. The decision came during a ·special meeting on council
goals set earlier this year.
The senior "housing project
comes as part of a plan to
expand the Newport Center
ar~a to build-out. The proposal
would satisfy requirements that
The Irvine Co., Ford Motor Land
Development Corp. and the city
provide affordable housing for
seniors.
The Oasis senior center and
the Corona del Mar Residents
Association both favor the idea,
said former Mayor Phil Sansone.
who sits on the boards of both
groups.
Councilwoman Norma
Glover objected to committing
to putting the new housing on
the site known as Newpg,rt VJ.l-
lage, just south of San Miguel
Drive. She suggested possibly
building it in the Newport Coast
area instead.
·we've gradually cut off that
beautiful view of the water
there,~ she said, referring to the
drive along MacArthw Boule-
vard. ·1 don't understand why
we want to put this thing here.~
Allowing the housing to go
up also means the city giving up
some open space that may have
become park land. But council
members said they hope. to get
some space from The Irvine Co.
elsewhere in the city in
exchqnge for the housing site.
Councilman Dennis O'Neil,
who heads the Newport Center
Economic Opportunities com-
mittee. said he just wanted the
council's OK to start negotia~
ti.ons with the Irvine Co.
In th06e talks, he said, offi-
cials can hammer out a deal that
can preserve some views and
pr"ovide some additional open
space. •u we can negotiate a deal
that makes sense as far as the
city is concerned, we should go
ahead with it,• be said.
TUESDAY; SEPTEMBER 9, 1997 •
Going toe-to-to~ with
my skinny physique
D uring the late 1930s, I
worked out at Jack
Walker's gym in Santa
Ana. This was no health club. It
was an old-fashioned boxer's
gym consisting of a ring, some
punching bags, a few weights,
and a couple of big, ugly sweat
boxes into which one could be
locked while steam was piped
in.
It was a prize fighter's gym,
pure and simple.
Walker was a retired British
middleweight champion. He
had a stable of young men he
was teaching the fine art of box-
ing. While amateuls, each had
hopes of becoming a profession-
al. I had no such ambition. I
went there to learn how to box.
Before the tum of the century
my father had .been a lumber-
jack and a cowboy. He had also
been a barroom boxer who went
from town to town to fight the
local champion in the local
saloon for money.
When l was a youngster, he
tried to teach me to box without
any appreciable success. He
was big and strong and had the
reflexes of a cat. l was a
scrawny, skinny little kid who
grew into a scrawny, skinny big
kid. '
Al all times, I had the reflex-
es of a giant sloth. Thus, my
father's efforts had been unsuc-
cessful, a matter of some frustra-
tion to him and great disap-
pointment to me. So, later in We
I conceived the idea that Jack
Walker, a professional fighter,
could teach me to box and
somehow my father, who was
~till alive, would be proud_ of
me.
Unhappily, even Jack Walker
didn't have much success.
He, like my father, simply
didn't have much with which to
work. However, I did learn one
thing. Boxing is a very nasty
business.
'In theory, boxing is an art
form. Actually, it is simply a
process in which one man tries
robe rt
gardner
desperately to knock the head
off another man for the enjoy-
ment of the public. It's that sim-
ple. The Romans did it \vith
Christians and lions. We do it
inside a 14-foot ring with two
men trying to hurt each other.
I kept finding myself inside
that 14-foot ring with someone
younger, stronger and faster.
That someone had one an1bi-
tion, to inflict great bodily injury
upon me. I also discovered that
a round lasts forever.
However, after a few months
I did learn ho\v to last three
rounds, barely.
ln those days, most IO\'ffiS
had similar gyms, and boxers
went from town to town to fight
These were amateur bouts. At
the end of three rounds, the
announcer announced the win-
ner and awarded him a Swiss
watch. Alter the fight, the fight-
er turned in the watch for $25.
So much for amateurism.

And so it happened that one
day Jack came to me and asked
me to join b.i5 stable of young
tigers. His reasoning was siln-
ple.
While I was 6 feet tall, I
weighed only 118 pounds. That
qualitiep me as a lightweight.
Sine~ my arms were about a /
foot ~anger than the rest of the
lightweights who were usually
in the 5-foot category with cor·
respondingly short arms, Jack's
idea was that by using my left
arm t could simply keep my
opponent away by jabbing.
Then came the punch line.
"We'll call you the fighting
judge, and the people will come
in droves to see a judge get his
he.3d knocked off.• \ .
There was only one"thing
\Vrong \Vlth Jack's theory. There
'A-"as simply no way, long arms or
not. that 1 would be able to keep
one of those young tigers away
from me for three rounds.
I \VdS reminded of Joe Louis'
remark about fighting in that
14-foot ring. "'You can run, but
you can't h.tde. ~ Thus. I declined
Jack Walker's kind invitation to
become the "'fighting judge.~
And so while \vith the pass-
tng of tim~ brains have become s vhat scrambled I
can't blame on my career in
the ring .
1 may l remember \Vhere I

NEWPORT BEACH -What a differ-
ence a community makes.
While most high school girls tennis
teams are crowded with recreational
type players, Newport Harbor High
draws from a neighborhood specializ-
ing in junior tennis.
•The strength of the junior pro-
grams in the area is excellent, and
that's where these girls come from,•
said Fletcher Olson, the Sailors' sec-
ond-year coach who guided them to
the CIF Southern Section
Division I title match last
year.
•Newport Beach Ten-
nis Club, Balboa Bay
Club Racquet Club and
Palisades Tennis Club all
have excellent junior
programs, and they
-bring the sport to the
community.•
The Sailors, with eight
returning players from
their 26-4 squad a year
ago, will once again be
among the top teams in
Orange Co~w· and CIP
Division.J dreles. Two of their greatest
competitors for cowity honors will also
be their toughest Sea View League
opponents -Corona del Mar and
defending league champion Wood-
bridge.

Senior arcaptains Brooke Taylor
and Erica Nelson, both standouts last
year when Newport Harbor handed
perennial power Peninsula its first loss
in 120 matches, are Olson!& top play-
ers.
After Taylor and Nelson, it's wide
open for the third singles spot, but look
for junior Erika Palm to rise from a
competitive in-house field to secure
the role, considering she was Olson's
most improved player a year ago.

lead Newport, which is
still seeking a solid fifth to
complete the package.
By Richard Dunn, Daily Pilot
NEWPORT BEACH -When
push comes to shove in girls cross
cowitry, a quality fifth runner is
essential in postseason competi-
. tion ... precisely Newport Harbor
High's Achilles' heel last year.
That should end this season for
Coach Eric Tweit's Sailors.
"We've got a chance to be a
pretty good team with four solid
runners, and if just one girl can
step up and give us five, we'll be
all right," said Tweit, whose fea-
tured runner, junior Alicia
McFall, is one of the best in
Orange County and the CIF
Southern Section Division ill.
McFall, who competed in the
state meet as a freshman with her
team and last year as an individ-
ual, finished second last fall in the
CIF Finals and, according to
Tweit, could win every Sea View
League dual meet this year, even
though the league is considered
the toughest in the county.
Senior captain Jamie Swar-
berg, a four-year varsity member,
and junior Molli Melum, who
broke 20 minutes on the famed
Mt. San Antonio College course
last autumn, will follow McFall.
·obviously we have a girl in
Alicia who potentially could be a
front runner and win every race
in our league," Tweit said. •Every
school bas a (top) girl, like Liz
Morse at Corona del Mar, Mary
Moore at Woodbridge, and El
Toro and Santa Margarita each
has a girl."
Sophomore Canie Foss, who did
not run cross country last year but
enjoyed an excellent spring in
track, will be the Thrs' fourth runner.
Senior Maxie Babazadeh and'
sophomore Amy Murphy (the
school's standout swimmer) are
returning letter winners who will
battle freshman Amber Steen and
junior Kristen Whitney for the
vital fifth spot.
Five returning varsity runners
and three bright newcomers
(Steen. Whitney and Foss) should
allow 'JWeit's Sailon, never short
on talent or determination, to
shake up the CIP DMsion m.
•Last year, we b6d four run-
ners wbo nm pnlttf well. but our
fifth never came around.• lWeit
said. •lf we would've found that
fifth runner, we would've moved
from fifth (in CIF) to third or sec-
ond. And we're in the same boat
this year. But we're a little
stronger this year." '
Newport Harbor, ranked
fourth in the CIF Division ill pre-
se4son poll behind El Modena,
La Canada and Dos Pueblos, will
face Division I powers Irvine and
El Toro and Division II stalwarts
Santa Margarita and Wood-
bridge in league competition.
CdM is ranked fifth in the Divi-
sion IV preseason poll. Every
team in the league is ranked in
the preseason in CIF.
•We got beat up pretty good in
the Sea View League last year,"
said Tweit, whose team doesn't
get its real test until November.
•This year," the veteran coach
of 17 seasons added, •it's going to
be interesting. Our biggest prob-
lem is our depth. We can't afford
for anybody to get injured."
Tweit said McFall will enter
the season in the best cross coun-
try shape of her career.
·without a doubt it was her
best SUlllIIler ever," Tweit said.
·we're expecting big things from
her. She did well at CIF last year
and she's ready to take another
step forward. She should definite-
ly be one of the top three runners
in Orange County."
Swar\)erg, the team's leader
and longtime standout, and third-
year varsity runner Melum are as
good as any 'second-and-third
combination in their division.
By the end of the season, Foss
should be interchangeable with
Swarberg and Melum. while
Steen could be the Sailors' next
lreshman sensation. ·u (Steen)
raoes as well as she has looked for
us this summer, she'll definitely
be one of our top five nmnen,•
