•
hree ye~ ago, Newport
Beach pamter Pam~la Grau
met Laguna Hills sculptor
Felix Tharin. Both were
vaguely discontent with the
way their work had.been going1 each
recognized in the other a sympathetic
spirit.
The pair began meeting on a regu-
lar basis to discuss their views about
art. They had encounters ~ studios
and cafes, exchanging ideas over .cups
of coffee.
Finally, deciding that they had too
much in common to pass up the oppor-
tunity, Grau and Tharin took a decisive
step; they began to create art together
-creations whose twisted, wiry forms
speak of the intensity of their collabo-
ration.
The sculptures, which they create in
their Newport Beach studio, have been
on display for the last several weeks in
the architectural office of Dougherty
and Dougherty in Costa Mesa. The
works often have a somewhat human
shape, and are made from discarded .
tennis nets and found objects that
have been wrapped around poles and
Slathered with layer after layer of
paint. Their appearance is -to put it
charitably -rather challenging, with
the rigid, glazed nets frequently ta.king
on the appearance of bwned metal.
Some people who.see the pieces
compare them to the wasted, skeletal
figures created by the Swiss artist Alber-
to Giacometti. Others immediately think
of the •alien bar" scene from "Star
Wars,• perhaps inspired by the vaguely
robotic character of the sculptures. ·
To Grau and Tbarin, though, the net
figures have a beauty that comes from
the integrity and imagination that goes
into their production.
"We're dealing with chaos," Grau
explained. "There's no preconceived
notions. The only thing we start out
with is that (a sculpture) will stand on
its own."
The artists collaborate on each
piece, changing it to fit their whim.
Th~ netting is wrapped around the
central pole in a more-or-less haphaz-
ard manner, with the little details that
distinguish their various cteations
evolving as minor alterations are made
dlld the multiple coats of paint are
applied.
The pa.int the pair favors is not the
expensive kind that comes in tidy
tubes, but rather the low-quality, mis-
cellaneous latex that most people have
sitting in a gallon container.in their
garage. The application of tne colors is

often as random as the creation of the
forms: Tharm emerged from the stu-
dio'~ainting room on a recent morn-
ing naving just applied a sickly shade
of hospital blue to a work in progress .
•Felix probably painted that blue
because that was the pamt can closest
to his hand,• Grau said.
The drtists recognize that their wor:k
calls up some grim associations for
many people, and they say they some-
times play with that reception. In some
works, they accentuate the colors and
shapes of the netting to make them
appear to look like barbed wire, or
even more like intestines.
What they·won't do, they assert, is
try to sotten or beautify the products of
their imagination for the sake of pleas-
ing the art-consuming public.
"Everything in Orange County is
about seduction," Grau said. "Felix
and I are working militantly against
sentimentality and seduction.•
The result of this approach, perhaps
not surpnsmgly, is that market
response to the pair's work has been
.
muted. They've had diihculty finding a
gallery that will gwe the twisted forms
the support they feel they need.
tirau said a gallery in Laguna
Beach recently showed their art for six
months.
"They really liked it,~ she said.
~But they went under," Tharin con-
ceded
Betsey Olenick Dougherty, who
arranged for the pair to show their
work as part of Dougherty and
Dougherty'5 20th anniversary celebra-
bon, saia she en1oyed the rawness of
the net figures, which was not only
aesthetically interesung, but also a
nice complement to the gritty, unfin-
ished look of the architectural office.
Initially, though, it was a little diffi-
cult to get used to.
"The first one that arrived was kmd
of dark and brooding and one of my
staff said she had a rughtmare about
it,• Dougherty said.
· Despite the dilficulty that Southern
California sensibilities may have in
appreciating their chaotic art, the pair
is convinced that the works make an
important statement about life and the
imagination in this part of the world.
"Our lives are twisted a.nd turned,"
Tharln said, gesturing toward the con-
voluted folds in one of the figures.
Moreover, as the pair emphasizes,
even the grittiest of their work utilizes
a material thdt Southern Califorruans
stereotypically believe is a building
block of paradise.
"There's really very few other
places in the world that have as many
discarded tennis nets,• Grau said.

"We were in water that
was three to four feet deep

High School in bell bottoms -the first
time they were in style,
Now all the classes of the 1970s are
back and they're partying to raise
money for today's generation of stu-
dents. ·
They are calling it a "class-less
reunion• and still they expect a turnout
of about 800 alumni.
"It was supposed to be our 25th
reunion for the class of '74," said ,A.G.
Kawamura, student body president fo:r
the class of 1974 and event committee
chair. MWe always have fun putting on
a party. This year when we were plan-
ning it, one of our friends, Dan Cohen
from the class of '73, says 'how come
you never invite all of us?'~ ·
And so they did. It is now a reunion
for the classes of 1970 through '79, with
the proceeds going to the Newport
Harbor Education Foundation.
The foundation is the private fund-
raising arm of Newport Harbor High
School. It raises money to promote aca-
demic excellence and enhance educa-
tional opportunities.for all students at
·Newport Harbor. -
Alumni are coming from as far as
the East Coast and Hawaii to reunite
and relive one of their favorite high
school memories -the legendary
local surf band, Honk.
"They were our high school years.
They're a real beach, fun-in-the-sum-
mer type of band," Hunter Severt, d
1975 graduate, said of Honk.
Best known for the soundtrack to
the IJlovie "Five Summer Stories,"
Honk has many alumni ·exated to
return.
Also performing will be Danny
Greyshock and the Greysharks and
the '70s Classmate All Star Band fea-
turing Phil Marshall and the Ball Bros.
Still, much of the excitement is won-
dering who will show, said Severt, who
flew iJl from Washington for her first
reunion since she graduated.
"I've lived out of state since 1980
·and have only kept in touch wilh a
handful of people," she said. "It's so
exciting -no one knows you W<e your
friend$ from high school."
"It's so exciting just to see the
names of people we haven't seen in so
long," said Kawamura, who has stolen
a peek at the guest list.
The reunion will be at 6 p.m. Satur-
day at Twin Palms Restaurant in Fash-
ion Island. Tickets are $100 per person
anri can be purchased by calling 1-
888-997-5673.
"Our hope was to donate some-
where between $20,000 and $50,000
[to the foundation) -or more, depend-
ing on how many donations come from
well-meaning souls," Kawamurd said.
If any graduates of the '70s have yel
to get their tickets, the "ice-breaker"
pancake breakfast from 8 to 11 a.m. on
Saturday morning V{ould be a good

The breakfast will be held at New-

sustained it,• said the always-
upbeat Glenn.
If the Sailors are to enter the
St.ate Playoffs next week with
championship laurels, they'll
have to find a way to deal with
the Mira Costa blend, a mix-

into submission, despite the
lack of the dominant player.

from that, we~re tied at sue sets

we go up, 7-5, and we carried
that momentum into the final
round, Jt was a great win."
For Dolphins Coach Jim

early, but could not find a way
Senior Chelsea Godbey,

Will the early finals

either team in Monday's finals?
Olson doesn't thmk so.

For the Sea Kings (16-6), the one big
bright spot was the p lay of Anne Yelsey,
who easily won her three sets, 6-1, 6-0,

players aren't as strong as the doubles.
Besides Yelsey's sweep, CdM's Nadia
Vaughan won two sets after dropping the
first one to Comstock.
But Peninsula's he.ralded doubles team
swept all nine sets to clinch the match.
