A TAXING REQUEST
At the last Newport Beach City

woman Norma Glover asked the
OASIS Seruor Center to apologize
to County neasurer John Moor-
lach for a letter that reprimanded
him for h.1$ use of property tax
list5 to solicit donations for the
Costa Mesa Senior Center.
Moorlach sent out 50,000
solicitation letters to residents in
Costa Mesa and Newport Beach
during the same time when the
Newport.Beach center was start·
mg its own annual fund-raising
campaign
Glover finally received a
response later m the meeting
when H . Ross Miller, represent-
ing OASIS. went to the lectern to
comment on the proposed Arts
cind Education Center -the real
focus of the study session.
Miller sa1d he flatly refused to

way of life that she's not exposed to

About a year artd a half ago,
Hembree saw an ad that said vol-
unteers tor the YMCA program
were needed She knew then that
it would be something she would
enjoy, especially because she had
been involved with the YMCA in
the past,
"I always liked working with
kids, and thought it would be fun
and a good opportunity to help
people," she said.
Hembree met Alejandrtt -who
had been waiting two years for a
mentor -and the two hit it off
nght away. Hembree signed a con·
tract that required she spend dt
least six hours a month with AlE'-
jandra for a minimum of a year.
Now, Hembree said she spends
about 15 hours a month with Ale-·
1andra, although it's as much as 30
hours some months.
One of the first thmgs they did
together was sample Asian cuisine,
mdudmg Chmese and Thai food.
They also took ice-skating
lessons together, and Hembree
and her husband brought Alejan-
dra's entire family -four siblings,
parents and 'grandparents -to
their cabm m the mountams Hem-
bree also helps Alejandra, a New-
port Harbor High School sopho-
more, with her homework
class projects.
•Jt's fun for me to see her be
broadened, and I think that is very
important, .. Hembree said.
Hembree said she hopes to con·
tmue being Alejandra's mentor at
least until she graduates from
high school. After that,
she said she knows the
two will remain friends.
She said the volunteer
JOb 1s fun because
being with Ale1andra
usually means getting
to do fun things. The
difficult part can be
break.mg down commu-
nication barriers with a
shy, detached teenager.
But Hembree said get-
ting through really
comes with time.
"It's definitely a good
opportunity to help
somebody out and show
them a different way of
life,• she said
Before being paired
up with Hembree, Ale-
1andra was one of many
teens in the program on

Even the two PLlot city edi-

They convinced Lobdell to use
both of their first names to create
"JenUer Stevens."
That's where Jennifer Hembree
came in. The 32-year-old Laguna

A TAXING REQUE$T
At the last Newport Beach City
Council study session, Council-
woman Norma Glover asked the
OASIS Seruor Center to apologize
to County lteasurer John Moor-
Jacb for a letter that repnmanded
him for his use of property tax
lists to solicit donabOns for the
Costa Mesa Seruor Center.
Moorlach sent out 50,000
solicitation letters to residents in
Costa Mesa and Newport Beach
during the same time when the
Newport Beach center was start-
ing its own annual fund-raising
campaign
Glover finally received a
response later m the meeting
when H. Ross Miller, represent-
ing OASIS, went to the lectern to
comment on the proposed Arts
and Education Center -the real
focus of the study session.
Miller said he flatly refused to
apolog12e for what OASIS saw
as the rrususe of Moorlach's
county position.
"I want to be a friend and a role
model, and show her a different
way of life that she's not exposed to
normally," Hembree said .
About a year .and a half ago,
Hembree saw an ad that said vol-
unteers for the YMCA program
were needed. She knew then that
it would be something she would
enjoy, especially because she had
been involved with the YMCA m
the past.
"I always liked working with
kids, and thought it would be Cun
and a good opportunity to help
people," she said.
Hembree met Alejandra -who
had been waiting two years for a
mentor -and the two hit it off
right away. Hembree signed a con-
tract that required she spend at
least six hours a month with Ale-
jandra for a minimum of a year.
Now, Hembree said she spends
about 15 hours a month with Ale-
jandra, although it's as much as 30
hours some months.
One of the flTSt things they did
together was sample Asian cwsine,
mcludmg Chinese and Thai food.
They also took ice-skating
lessons together, and Hembree
and her husband brought Alejan-
dra's entire family -four siblings,
pdrents and grandparents -to
their cabin in the mountains Hem-
bree also helps Alejandra, a New-
port Harbor High School sopho-
more, with her
class pro1ects.
"It's fun for me to see her be
broadened, and I think that is very
important,• Hembree said.
Hembree said she hopes to con-
tinue being Alejandra's mentor at
least until she graduates from
high school. After that,
she said she knows the
two will remain fnends.
She said the volunteer
job 1s fun because
being with Alejandra
usually means getting
to do fun things. The
difficult part can be
breaking down commu-
nication barriers with a
shy, detached teenager
But Hembree said get-
ting through really
comes with lime.
"It's definitely a good
opportunity to help
somebody out and show
them a different way of
life,# she said
