Fake diamond isn't

NEWPORT BEACH
Police are warning local jew-
elers to keep a sharp eye out
for a new state-of-the-art type
or fake diamond.
At least one longtime New-
port Beach pawn shop and
two Los Angeles jewelers
have been fooled into buying
the phony stones ·in recent
months.
The man-made sand com-
pound, called moissarute,
not only looks exactly like a
real diamond but stands up
to traditional methods of
detecting fakes, said Sgt.
Mike McDermott of the
Newport Beach police
department.
Newport Beach jeweler
Darwin Hurst, of Hurst's and
Son Jewelry and Loan on Via
Lido, gave a loan of $4,500 for
what he thought was a loose
diamond worth $17,000 last
· May. The man who pawned
the phony diamond identified
hirnseJf as Nathan Richard
Mildrew, 25, of Santa Ana
Boulevard in Costa Mesa.
Mildrew never returned to
the shop to make payments on
the ring, and police have been
unable to locate him.
•(Mildrew) could easily
defend himself by saying he
bought it from someone else

The Los Angeles Pohce

out a warrant for a man named
Stephen Albert Bnller, who is
suspected of selling mo1ssan-

Angeles.
While visiting Newport

State Of the Tars·: Perfection
'•
• Stockton's Lincoln High is no match
for Newport Harbor as Sailors capture
a s~cond straight state championship.
'I"""' A11111il IJ I
CYPRESS -Stockton's Lincoln High coach
Bret Almazan-Cezar sdid before his team
hooked up with Newport Harbor m the CIF Oivi·
sion I State Championships Saturday night that,
·volleyball is a game.of X 's and O's and their X's
a.re a lot bigger than our O's."
The Sailors showcased enough X's to win a
year's worth of tic-tac-toe gdmes and successful-
ly defended their state uUe with a three-gam~
sweep over the Tro1ans, 15-12, 15-6, 15-7, before
a Sailor-heavy crowd at Cypress College.
·we were really fmng on all cylmders
tonight," Coach Ddn Glenn said. "When we're
passing, digging and doing ~111 the little things
right, like we were Loruqhl, I don't think there'~
anyone that can beat us.•
Almazan-Cezar dgrees. '
"They just hdd too many WL'dpons to defend
againsV he said "We're 1ust not hig enough to
stop so many weapons •
Newport used dll lhP a.mmo from all itS
weapons to dispose of the Tro1ans Ul the 80-
minute match.
Seruor April Ross hmshed with 18 kills to lead
the Sailors (37-2), but she was dchmtely not
alone in the attack.
Seruor Knsl.d Dill had lb kiJls and three blocks, junior Heather ,_ _____ _
Cullen had 12 kills dnd
seruor Brenda Waterman
added 10 kills and five
digs for the Tars
With the ';Vln, Newport
Harbor became only the
third D1v1Slon I team to
wm back-to-back titles.
The others were lrvme in
1987-88 and Corona del
Mar in 1992-93
"This was a very

Dan Glenn
Newport 1-tarbor
volleyball coach
"And for both or those
teams, 1hey had to 'beat us
to do it,• Gle pomted
out "This was a very
tough road, because you
know not many teams have been able to wm a
second year in a. row.·
Despite playing the Tro1ans in last year's state
championship match. Glenn didn't have as much
knowledge as he would have liked and that was
eVident m game one.
•This was the fJ.n.t team we'\e played m the
playoffs that we didn't have any videotape on,·
Glenn said. .. So we had a little trouble starting
off the match. trying to figure out what they were
doing. Once we did that. we were abfe to con-
centrate on what we had to do.·
Both teams stayed clo. e to each other on the ·
scoreboard in game one. before Lincoln (33·6)
jumped out to an 11 ·8 lead, lhanks in part to the
strong hitting of Nicole Davis. who hmshed with
a team-tuqh 10 kills She will team up with Ross
at USC next season.
But from there, just like they've been doing all
season, the Sailors found d way to hght back.
Newport cut the lead lo 12-10 then following
a Lincoln timeout, back·to·back kills by Dill and
Waterman tied the game at 12.
· From there, an errdllt Lincoln return and kills
from Ross and Cullen gave Newport the 15-12
deos1on. Dill. headed for Duke University next
year, had eight kills in that game to lead the Tars.
After a strong 3-0 stc1rt m game two for the
TtoJaiis Newport shut down their ottens~. while
-5eoring the next six points to take the lead for
good.
Dill, named the State Tournament's Most
Valuable Player, was a constant harassment at
the net on both offense and d"fcn., ~for the Tars.
"Knsta. like she has all season, really stepped
it up torught, • Glenn did. "In our tough games,
like most of our eniors, she's come through for
us.•
Lincoln cul the lead to 6-5, but the strong
jump serve:s of Ross enabled the Seniors to tip off
four straight pomts to lengthen th~11 lead to 10-5.

That self-discipline is crucial for success in the
collegiate level, es Carey has already found out.
•1n college, there is more pressure put on
yourself to do the extra work and to make sure
you get better,• Carey said. HMy motivation is
knowing that I have to get better and I've
already learned so much over here."
For those not to familiar with the role of a
setter, Carey has an easy definition.
"My job is to make my teammates look real
gOod out there,• she said. •My coaches and
teammates have been great with helping me fit
, into this program."
With all the games played in Hawau. Carey's
crew has about as big a home field advantage as
any team could possibly have.

"With the talent on this team, if all 12 players
