Student:testilies=in coach's molestation case
• Boy said football
volunteer Robert Allen
Harrington fondled him
at school and showed
him erotic movies.
By Christopher Goff ard, Daily Pilot
SANTA ANA -An Estancia
High School student testified
Monday that former volunteer
football coach Robert Allen Har-
rington touched him on the groin
during swimming lessons,
showed him pornographic movies
and molested him in his school
office.
As Harrington's trial got under
way, the student -referred to as
John Doe No. 1 -told the court
55-year-old Harrington ottered to
teach him how to swim in August
1996 at the school pool.
Under questioning from
Deputy District Attorney Brian
Kazarian, the boy said Harrington
gave him about 10 lessons and
about half the time held him up in
the water with one hand on his
chest and the other on his groin.
"l thought that was the way
you learned how to swim,· the
boy said. "He said, Th.is is how
I'm going to keep you a.float.'•
After one of the swimming
lessons, the boy testified, Haning-
ton invited him into bis office to
watch a copulation scene in a
pornographic video and then
asked, "Have you ever wondered
what thatlelt like?"
Saying "Let me show you,•
Harrington repeatedly insisted on
molesting the boy and finally didr
so, the boy testified. The boy said
he felt "dizzy" ,during the inci-
dent.
•Everything was spinning
around, like, 'I can't believe this is
happening,'" the boy said. "I was
really scared."
The boy said he hesitated
telling his parents about the inci-
dent because in bis culture, "We
don't talk about sex. .. . It's very
private. I didn't know how to
bring it up."
Instead, the boy said, he told
his best friend and met with
school officials about it. "I felt like
just an idiot for letting it happen,"
.he said.
During cross-examination,
defense attorney Fred McBride
asked the boy if he thought it was
normal for someone to touch his
groin during a swimming lesson.

It is time to read.
School officials call it Sustained Silent Reading,

improve reading, writing skills and test scores.

Every student, teacher and administrator on

While the faculty and staff love it, the students
aren't as enthusiastic. Many of them would rather
do school work instead of reading.

Turner considering
run for supervisor
•Former Newport Beach
mayor believes Wilson is
misleading voters.
By Jenriifer Armstrong, Datly Pilot
NEWPORT BEACH -Local
politics·watchers are now await-
wg word from former Mayor
Clarence #Bus" Turner on
whether he'll be the El Toro airport
proponent who challenges incum-
bent county Supervisor Tom Wil-
son in June's election.
·1 think Tom Wilson is mislead-
ing the 5th District, -Turner said.
"I think there will be an airport Clarence Turner. Thinking of
there, and he should be bringing 5th District challenge. both sides together.•
Other local names have flown
about in the speculation -name-
ly, City Council members John
Hedges and Tom Edwards, both
outspoken supporters of an aiJport
at the El Toro Marine base. But
both Hedges and Edwards said
that, as of now, they aren't plan-
ning to run and that they'd support
l\.uner if he decides to go for it.
Newport Beach has served as
the home of the supervisor occu-
pying the 5th-District seat going
back nearly two decades -until
Laguna Niguel Councilman Tom
Wilson was appointed in Novem-
ber to replace Marian Bergeson.
Just as Wilson took that position.
the proposed airport at the El Toro Tom Ed~ Approached but
Marine base came to the supervi-declined so far. sors for a vote. Wilson voted
;sgainst the airport.
In June, th.e contentious JOb of
representing the district that
includes both Newport Beach and
its airport-debate nemesis, South
County, will be up for grabs in an
election. And that presents the
possibility of some intense cam-
paigning in a district that hasn't
seen a hotly rontested election in
decades.
Turner has yet to decide for sure
if he'll jump into the fray. H he does,
he'll take on Wilson and perhaps
the even more adamantly anti-air-
port Lany Agran, should the for-
mer Irvine mayor and onetime
presidential candidate opt to run.
But Turner, 64, said he's been
considering a run since the death 1 of his wife a few months ago. """".......,~

·without permission or

decide appropriate action.
By Tim Grenda, Daily Pilot
COSTA :MESA -The New
York City copyright company that
owns the rights to the Broadway
musical "Big River" said Monday
it will not prosecute the Piece-
makers for illegally using its
copyrighted material during a
perf onnance last weekend.
The close-knit Christian group
which owns and operates the
Piecemakers Country Store on
Adams Avenue staged its small
production in the store parking
lot Saturday night.
While the copyright infringe-
ment case is apparently over, the
Piecemakers must still deal with
Costa Mesa of:fidals for violating
the city's municipal code by not
obtaining a special events permit
for the concert.
While fines and citations could
be levied, Deputy City Manager
Don Lamm said the city prefers to
focus on compliance with city
codes, not p•mishment.
But, he said, city officials still
haven't decided how to handle
the situation.
"We're not in the business of
giving penalties just for penalties'
sake," Lamm said. "Yes, it was a
violation of the code, but it wasn't
a life-threatening situation. and
we will treat it as such.• ·
The performance, an adapta-
tion of "Big River• written by
Piecemakers' store co-owner
Marie Kolasinski, featured sever-
al songs from the award-winning
show. .
Before raising the curtain, the
Piecemakers had been warned
by the Rodgers and Hammerstein
Theater Llbrary -which owns
the rights to "Big River" -not to
do the show because the group
had not been granted pennission.
But the show went on as
scheduled, and on Monday,
library spokesman Tom Briggs
said his company had closed its
case against the Pi.ecemakers.
"We won't be taking any
[legal) action for one performance
in a parking lot,• Briggs said. "It's
just not worth chasing, and we
don't want to get into any big
thing with just a little fringe
group.•

According to the dictionary,
debauchery is derived from the

During the Shaw!Partch days,

the concept of debauchery simply
doesn't fit the Michigan.
The Michigan was and is a 22-

have the accommodations for
debauchery.
When one thinks of debauch-
ery on the high seas one thinks of
the word in the concept of a luxu-
rious yacht. On it a.re a man with
lewd ambitions -and a female who
is a willing partner in those ambi-
tions. On a yacht they have the
accommodations to satisfy those
ambitions. On the Michigan, no
way.

Sea Kings gain the upper hand in an
early-season nonleague showdown.
By Richard Dunn, Daily Pilot
CORONA DEL MAR -With senior standout Nina
Vaughan and sophomore sensations Caylan Leslie
and Nadia Vaughan, Corona del Mar Higb's girls
tennis team can bank on at least seven sets every
match.
But what the Sea Kings will need to win a CIF
Southern Section Division I title this year is a reliable
doubles team, a partnership to get them over nine
sets.
That's where juniors Courtney Tenerelli and
Ruchika Budhraja come in, like Monday when they
swept all three sets at No. 2 doubles in host CdM's
11-7 victory over Peninsula in a momentous non-
league match between the top two schools in Divi-
sion I.
·we'll see either (the Panthers) or Woodbridge (in
the CIF Finals)," Cd.M Coach 1im Mang said, offer-
ing his prognostication a little sooner than usual this
season.
•Now we'll be seeded No. 1 (entering the play-
offs), or we won't be any worse than No. 2 when CIF
rolls around," Mang added.
For Corona del Mar (6-0), ranked No. 1 in Orange
County and No. 2 behind Peninsula in CIF Division
I (which will change next week), it will have more
than a passing interest when Woodbridge hosts
Peninsula Oct. 8. •That will tell us a lot,• Mang said.
The Sea Kings, who beat the Panthers last year
by the same score, put a quick stranglehold on
Peninsula, going up 4-2 in the first round, then
increasing their lead to 8-4 after two.
With Nina Vaughan and CdM's best doubles
team (Tenerelli and Budhraja) still on the court in the
third round, it was merely a formality before the Sea
Kin clinched .
..fi:nerelli-Budhraja were down 3-5 in their first
two sets, but came back both times to win, 7-5,
before topping Caitlin Blashaw and Jamie Pagliano,
6-4, in the last set. Pagliano was replacing an injured
Cheyne Ursich.
"We wanted to win all three," Budhraja said.
"That's our goal."
playing the Panthers'· best player.
In a set lasting more than an hour, Leslie defeat-
ed Miller, 7-6 (7-3), to give Cd.M a 4-2 lead and set
the tempo for the match.
Leslie, ranked fifth in Southern California in the
girls 16s, was down 0-2 in the tiebreak before com-
ing back. Leslie swept at No. 1 singles, while
Vaughan swept at No. 2. Nadia Vaughan won twice
at No. 3 singles.
·rd rather be good in November than September,
anyway," laughed Peninsula Coach Tom Cox,
whose squad won its sixth straight CIF Division I
title last year when it beat Newport Harbor, the team
which snapped Peninsula's 120-match winning
streak last year in nonleague.
•There was so much pressure on our girls with
that winning streak,• Cox added. •When they lost to
Newport Harbor, they went in the tank after thal
There was so much pressure, we just crumbled in
that match. But (the loss) gave us something to work
for."
For CdM's Tenerelli and Budhraja, they're 14-1
this season, dropping their only set to Amy Trankino
and Kate Romm of Dana Hills.

With Estancia's varsity coach,
John Llebengood, battling a
depth problem on his bench, one
may wonder why some of these
youngsters aren't suiting up.
•Most of them aren't physically
mature enough,• Perry said.

Vaughan, who returned late Sunday night from a

before facing Peninsula's Hanna Miller.
So in the opening set, it was Leslie. not Vaughan,
