WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 1, 1997
Hey, whats a little carbon
monoxide between friends?
L ast Saturday night, I grilled
a filet mignon on ow out-
side barbecue. This was an
occasion on several counts.
First of all, I eat most of my
red m eat when my wife is at
work or otherwise engaged
because she has come to believe
from voluminous r eading that
red meat isn 't good for us. And,
second, she aJso discovered in
her reading a treatise on home
barbecues that made them seem
downright lethal.
So it was a considerable con-
cession for her to share a home-
barbecued steak with me. There
was one condition, however. !-!er
research had also informed her
that only by cooking beef \vell-
done can we kill the bacleria on
the n1eat. For about seven
decades I have been eating beef
medium-rare, so I have probably
asslm.i.Ja ted a lot of bacteria.
Maybe by now I have even built
up an immunity to 1t. But I fig-
ured since she hnd come this far.
I could make that concession
As a result, we ate charred
filets that she kept insisting
stoutly weren•t bad at all and
that I have been brooding about
ever since. I suppose that's why
the carbon monox..ide detectors
she laid on me two days later
pushed me over the edye.
My wife, who should knO\Y
better, believes vl.rluaUy every·
thing she reads. She should
know better because she's been
a journalist all of her \vorking
life and has co-habited \vith one
for a good many years. We fre-
quently write this stuff -or I do:
I shouldn't implica te her -with
only ii fuzzy notion of \vhat
we're talking about, on the
authority of some expert \Ve
don't know.
Still, even armed with ttus
knowledge, there's no call to
aJarn1 she doesn't read and
heed. That's why she put. rather
impenously, I thought. the clip-
ping about CO tcarbon n1onox-
ide) detectors on my desk.
"Read this," she said, tapping
the clipping forebodingly. And
she dearly didn't mean read it
next week or next month. "I
think it's time w e do something
about this."

me a peril roughly equivalent to

Not so. says the article.
It warned me darkly that
when the weather drives us
inside, au of our heating and
cooling e<1uipment and other
electrical applJances are crank-

And we'll never know J.l that

sneaks up and clobbers us,
which is precisely the sort of
menace 1ny \Vile adnlires and
feels I treat m much too cavalier

The article offers a List of
things ID do to deliver us fron1
the CO fate. And right away it
loses me by suggesting I check
my chimney and have it deaned
out annually. C'mon now. I lived
\vith real chimneys !or 35 years
in the h.1idwest and never had
one cleaned out -or knew any·
one w ho did. The question ts
moot, anyway, because l don't
even have a chimney here, and
jf I did, all it would have to
