There's the impressive image ·
of the blue-hulled yawl Escape,
a 72-foot beast that stopped dur-
ing a race in 1958 in Acapulco,
rescued the crew of one of the
competing boats (which had
burst into flames) and then flew
on toward the brush lme, some-
how managing to finish second.
There's the Nalu ll, a 46-foot
sloop that woo a l'ranspac race
so decisively in 1959 that
rumors circulated about the
occult practices of the crew,
who were said to be sacrificing
live chickens'to appease
Hawaiian gods. (It turned out
that the crew was merely hun-
gry and hankering after a little
fresh meat.)
And then there's the convert·

ed minesweeper Wild Goose, a
boat that was as distinctive for
its odd and endearing shape as
it was for its owner: John
Wayne.
It goes on and on. Every
painting in the show is a win-
dow onto Newport Beach nauti-
cal history, with accompanymg
captions (which are unfortu-
nately short) rattling off the
facts for those who naver saw
these boats in their prime.
The style of the works is fair·
ly tame, as might be expected,
given the subject matter. There
are so many mildly choppy
seas, partly cloudy skies, and
ornamental sea gulls in these
pictures that when a viewer .
finally peers at a work like Cliff
Wassmann's portrait of the Swift
of Ipswich, which features a
slate gray sky and calm waters,
the effect is oddly surprising.
Gary Miltimore's painting of
the Serena Downwind, a work
that looks at the boat from over-
head (perhaps from the point of
view of one of those ornamental
sea gulls?), is also, in its moder-
ate unconventionality, some-
thing of a shocker.
But Simon's work, with its
Bogie-in-the-comer sensibility,
does the best job of all the
works in the show of transmut-
ing its own cheesiness into a
thoroughly enjoyable product.
u Some fine art folks would

Marcus de Chevrieux of the
heavenly Bogart. •But it's kind

And that's exactly the pomt.

Hoeding-
haus, a 35-year Newport Beach
resident, commissioned several
dmen works for the show -
paintings that will remain in the
museum when the exhibit closes.
The goal of getting the paint-
ings made, Hoedinghaus said,
was to blgblight the nch yacht-

tainly one of the best, if the not

world,• Hoedmghaus said. ·we

works in the show.

MILLENNIUM MOMENT
A teller.of hair-raising tales
One night, one man and one sweet ride
Ask me how much fun 1t
was. Go ahead, ask.
More fun than anyone
deserves, that's how much.
Bungee-jwnpingi Skydiving?
Swimming with the great
whales? Please. Nothing so
pedestrian.
It all started with a world-
class company called Robert
Bein, William Prost & Associ-
ates, which is celebrating its
55th anniversary. RBF started
out in 1944, in a small office
behind Pink's drugstore on
Newport Boulevard.
Half a century later, as you
crwse the highways and
byways of Newport-Mesa. yqu
can't tum a comer without see-
ing RBF's engineenng, survey-
mg, or planning handiwork -
the Bluffs, Harbor View,
Promontory Pomt, Spyglass,
Linda Isle, and m~ of north
Costa Mesa. Oh, they also did
that "Happiest Place on Earth"
thing in Anaheun.
Anyway, RBF threw a major
rager last week for their 55th,
complete with a 10-piece swing
band and swing dancers in
period dress. for a few hours, it
. was 1944 at the Rendezvous
Ballroom.
I suggested a period car to
dress the pJace up, which led
me to a good friend who also
happens to be the grandmaster
of the Orange County Market-
place -Bob Teller.
Generous as always, Bob

These aren't running boards.
They're sideyards. You could
set up a small chair and a cafe

interior glows with rosewood
and red leather, and it does
mdeed have a rumble seat,
which produces a smile on
every face that seeS ll.
But it·isn't just what the car
looks like. It's what it does to
you. In the time it takes to hit
the starter button and eaSe in

I try hard to avoid people with
enlarged egos, but I swear, it's
impossible not to feel supenor

• Sea View League football coaches
discus!> CIF Division VI title collision.
-Who better to provide msight on the CIF Southern
Section 01v1s1on VI football title game between Newport
Harbor and Irvine than fellow Sea View League coaches?
Here's what the rest of the league bram trust thinks
"bout tonight's showdown at Oran~ Coast College:
• Aliso Nlguet Coach ~ Wood: A lot of times,
playing a team a second time after you already beat
them (Harbor won the first meeting, 12-10) could be considered a disadvantage, so that may give Irvine an
edge It could be another close game
"Newport Harbor rs very d1sc1plined and physical and I
think Newport Harbor 1s a ltttle better team. But I don't
know what losing (senior offensive tackle Robert Cole
Who suffered a broken leg last week) does to them.
It could help them rally up more. or it might hurt them at the point of attack.
·1 like Irvine's defense. Those guys fly around and
tackle real well. It should be a low-scoring game.
"If (Newport tailback Andre) Stewart runs better than
the first time they played (112 yards), Newport will win.
If he doesn't run as well, or 1s about the same .. "
• Laguna HUis Coach Bruce Ingalls: "Without
question, the one key for Irvine Is to stop Stewart
"(The Vaqueros) have established themselves on
offense (Senior Keith) Short seems to be the guy to
stop, but they've brought other people in durlng the
playoffs. They had enougti running game and enough
ljal control to beat Loar a (a 15 9 semifinal triumph).
Nick Haddy Bryan Breland
"(Irvine's) quarterback (Mike Ricci) seems to do enough to help them move the ball
"But Newport Harbor's defense speaks for itself. It's
one of the best 1n Orange County, if not the best. Those guys can stack up against anybody and Irvine has had
problems running the ball and moving the ball, at times.
•1rvine's defense is pretty good, too. I thtnk the whol&
key will be, which team generates more offense.•
• Woodbridge coach Rldc Gibson: "Both teams have
great defenses, so 1t could be 3-0.
•1t•s a typical Newport defense -very physical and the
linebackers make the majority of the tackles.
•1rvine is more of an attacking defense and they do a
real good job getting to the ball. They basically dare you
to throw.
·1 think Newport will have to get out of its typical
(offensive plan) of running ..a times and throwing about
four if it wants tu score points But Stewart is still a
fantastic weapon and he has to get his cames.
"Irvine Is going to have to throw the ball a little more
than it has, because you can't run consistently against
Newport and expect to come out on top.
".(Senior receiver James) Whitted Is as important to
Irvine as Billy Clayton Is to Newport One of the keys
may be which one of them makes the big play, the big
catch.
"Both teams are very good with their special teams.
lrvme's kick coverage is the best I've ~n. but Newport's
place-kicking may be a little more consistent.
"I get the sense that Newport 1s a httle more physical
on both sides of the ball." -by a.ny F•ullcnw

QUOTE Of THE DAY
•1t'.s going to be o hel of a game ... ~
Jeff Brinkley, Newport Harbor football coach
Friday, December 10, 1999 • Sports Editor Roger Cotbon • 9A9.S7 4-4223
• Defensive struggle is predicted as
these two Sea View League football
rivals collide in Division VI title game.
BAllR'I' l~AUl.t.NMt
COSTA MESA -It's just blue paint on a gray
wall, but the conspicuous tribute that greets New-
port Harbor High football players and coaches
every day they enter theu campus headquarters,
may as well be etched in stone
•ctF champions 1994," redds the surface above
the doorway to the building containing the locker
room, coaches' offices and weight fdcility. It's a tan-
gible tie to the only Southern Section title in the
program'!> previous 68 seai.ons.
TOe Sailors (12-0-1) will attempt to erase that
exclusivity tonight, when they battle Sea View
League nval Irvine (10-2-1) in the ClF Divl.Sion VJ
title showdown at 7'.30 at Orange Coast College.
"It's going to be a hell of a game, .. 14-yed.T New-
port Harbor Coach Jeff Brin.kley satd of the teams'
second meeting th.is season. The host Sollors won
the Oct. 15 league opener, 12-10, when Junior end
Garrett 1Toncale blocked a 35-yard
field-goal attempt with 4:51 remainir)g.
"Our kids know what they're in
for," 19-year I.rvine Coach Terry Heni-
gan said.
A defensive struggle is expected as
both teams feature noteworthy umts
with vastly different approaches.
..
Seniors Justin Jacobs (21 catches for 384 yards)
.and Billy Clayton (18 for 294) are the Tars' leading
receivers. Both have scored seven TDs.
Hlrvine puts eight guys up there and they come
after you," BnnkJey said. "It's nice to think we
could pound it up in there, but we're not going to
beat our heads against a wall. We'll do what's nec-
essary. Hopefully we can run the ball and throw
the ball."
Harbor is averaging 32.6 points and its 423
points is the second-best total in school history.
Irvine, averaging 21 .2 points, has shown more
offensive balance.
SeniOr Keith Short, a Calvary Chapel transfer
who was an All-CfF Division XI defensive back last
season, headlines the back.field rotation. He bas
1, 124 rushing yards and has scored 13 touch·
downs, but has just 139 yards on 36 playoff carries.
He has committed to UCLA as a defensive back
and his seven interceptions lead the team.
•we use wboever's hot,• lienigan said of his
backs, who also include senior Martin Rovira (451
rushing yards), sophomore Godfrey Young (397)
and junior Peter Abe (281). •
Irvine seruor quarterback Mike Ricci has com-
pleted 120 of 194 passes (62%) for 1,544 yards and
14 touchdowns.
R.icci's favorite receiver is seruor
James Whitted, who has 23 of his 54
receptions in the playoffs. Whitted
missed the first Newport meeting wilh
a knee injury. HIS three-game regular-
season absence coincided with a loss to
Division I findhst Mater Dei, dS well as
a 21·21 tie aga.mst Division X semifinal-
J.St South Torrance. Whitted has 658
receiving yards and eight touchdowns.
Newport, which has yielded an
Orange County-low 99 points; includ-
ing four shutouts in its last si.X games,
emphas1zes containment. The Ta.rs
employ a four-three alignment with
four defensive backs, which aims to
put a body in every runrung gap and
always keep receivers m front of them. Andre Stewart
"They're gomg to try to keep it bal-
anced and move the chains,• Brinkley
sa1d. ·And. at some point, they usually
try t~ throw the deep ball."
Harbor's secondary, which has 23
interceptions to help fuel a plus-15
turnover ratio, has been tested in the postseason.
Irvine runs Buddy Ryan's 46
scheme, which helped the Chicago Bears d estroy
NFL competition m a 1985 championship cam-
paign and tnggered the continuing shift to attack-
ing defenses at all levels.
The Vaqueros, who have held teams to 12.8
points per game, stack eight players in the box to
stuff the run and pressure the quarterback.
·our (three defensive backs) are on an island
almost every single play," Henigan said.
The contrast canics over to both tedffiS' offenses.
Newport, the S<'a View champion bidding to
join the 14-0 team or 1994 as the only unbeaten
squads in school history, has ridden a smashmouth
running gc:UDe to it!. fourth CJF title game in eight
years. Of Newport's 4,635 offensive yards, 79%
have come on the ground.
Senior tailback Andre Stewart, surprisingly
powerful at 1usl 5-foot-9, 160 pounds, has amassed
a school single-season record 2,245 rushing yards
and scored 25 touchdowns. He has gamed at least
100 yards in all but one game Uus fall, mcluding a
112-yard performance agamst Irvine.
"He runs like he's 195 pounds,• said Irvine mid-
dle linebacker Mike Patterson, who has a team-
leading 132 tackles and 8'12 sacks.
"(Stewart} might be the best back we've faced
and we've faced some good ones: Henigan said.
Blair Jones, a blue-chip 6-8, 262-pound left
tackle, anchors Newport's oflensive front, wluch
also includes guards Steve Wukawil7 and Nick
Haddy, center Luis Cruz and sophomore tackJe
Bryan Breland. Breld.Od (6-3, 248) starts in place or
senior Robert Cole (6·5, 325), who broke his leg in
a 49-0 semiJmal win over Kennedy.
Breland ha~ seen mop-up duty all season dJld
played the entire game against Magnolia (a 55-13
~win Oct. 7), when Jones sat out WJlh the nu.
The Sailors have passed spanngly, particularly in
the postseason. Junior quarterbQck Chris Manderi-
no has just 10 of his 51 completions in the playoffs.
He has thrown for 867 yards and 12 touchdowns and
has also rushed for 234 yclfC.U. and six TDs.
Villa Park quarterback John Henry Jackson
completed 12 of 16 for 195 yards ma 35-16 quar-
terfinal loss and Kennedy signal caller Geoff Ether-
son threw for 156 yards, completing 13 or 33.
·we haven't played agamst many teams who
threw the ball, so I think the last few weeks has
helped us,• said Clayton, a three-year starter at
safety. Clayton shares the interception lead with
fellow safety Dayne Pfaff (five), while Jacobs, a
comerback, bas four.
Ricci threw just siX umes m the first Harbor
game, completing four for 84 yards, including a 51-
yard catch·and-run to Eric Patton, whtcp set up the
ill-fated field goal The Vaqueros had 122 rushing
yards that night.
Defensive stalwarts for Harbor include the line-
bdck:ing trio of senior Mike Tunney and juniors
Alan Saenz and Manderino. They have 195 com-
bined tackles, split almost equdlly.
1Toncale has 10 sacks, while backup end Brad
Rothwell has nine and senior nose guard Andy
Kalanz seven.
ln addition to Patterson and Short; Irvine's
defense is keyed by juruor end Bnan Porteous (57
tackles and 7'h sacks), outside linebackers Zach
Taylor (66 tackles and three sacks) and Jeff Patty
(56 tackles and fow-sacks), as well as safety Patton
(61 tackles and two interceptions).
Irvine's 13 opponents have averaged e19ht wms
this season, while Harbor foo:; have averaged just five.
Irvine is 3·0 in ClF championship games, wiri-
ning all three consecutively (1991-93), all at OCC.
Included in that run was a 30-8 win over Newport
for the Division IV crown In 1992.
Harbor, whtch went 50 years without playing m
a title game d.fter a 39·6 loss to Bonita in 1942,
defeated Servile, 20-15, for the aforemention(!d
DIVlsion V championship. That was the Tars' last
game atOCC.
In the event of a tic, there will be no overtune.
Both teams will s hare lhc championship.

CELEBRATING THE M ILLE NNIUM
• Sturdy and strong, the former Athlete of the Year

A lthough Dave

went crazy" after the Mustangs'
early-sea!>on victory.
"My brother and I were
