Harry the Hood
W e all know about •the
mob,• its birth during
Prohibition and its
growth in such dties as Chicago
and New York unW it virtually
ran both cities. The names of Al
Capone, Lucky Luciano Bugsy
Sj.egle and Meyer Lansk:y have
becotne household words.
We also know that the mob
began with bootlegging, then
moved into gambling, drugs,
pros~tutio11 and loan-sharking.
Yet l.lttle has been said about
another mob activity: thievery,
whether by me~ of robbery,
burglary or other methods of
theft. Titievery was very much a
part of the mob's bag of tricks. It
was through this aspect of mob
activity that I met an honest-to-
God member of the mob. It
occurred during my time on the
Orange County Superior Court.

Harry said he just happened
to be driving tluough Sant& Ana
with his wife when he got the
idea of introducing her to me. I
took Harry aside and told him
that was not quite the way we
operated in Orange County. He
seemed shocked because in
New York, the mob and the
judges were very buddy-buddy.
But he understood and left. ~

Due to several gen.erations of
honest, aggressive law enforce-
~ent officers; the mob has nev-
er really gotten a foothold in
Orange County. Not that they
didn't try. The Bridgford Pack-
~g Co. hijacking was an exam-
ple of an effort by the mob. It
was a high-class, professional
robbery that occurred during
tlle time the mob was trying to
move into Los Angeles, particu-
larly through the movie studios.
Before he left, he said be

in Los Angeles where the guys
hung out. I gathered that •the
guys• were professional crimi-

According to law enforce-
ment intelligence sources, it was
about that time the mob sent the
man I will call "Harry the
Hood• to Southern California to
take over the thievery aspect of
the mob's activities.
According to these sowces,
Harry mastenninded the heist of
a Bridgford Packing Co. refrig-
erated truck full of meat worth
in excess of $100,000. The rob-
bers were caught, tried and con-
victed in Lo s Angeles County.
However, authorities were anx-
ious to get Harry, so he was
charged with conspiracy here in
Orange County, where the rob-
bery started.
It was a good try but a pitiful-
ly weak case. Somehow, no one
seemed to remember Hany. He
didn't exist. So the jury prompt-
ly and properly acquitted him.
In the old, red-sandstone
courthouse, my chambers
opened onto the public corridor.
One day after that trial, some-

"Oh, they say you cdil almost

I think "the guys" were pret-

take a dim view of nonsupport

CdMcrushes
Santa Barbara
• Sea Kings belt Dons,
14-4; Woodbridge looms.
By Richard Dunn, Daily Pilot
CORONA DEL MAR -The
power of the almighty in girls
tennis has shifted only temporar-
ily. Until someone knocks off
Peninsula High in November, the
Pacific Palisades juggernaut will
remain the team to beat.
That was part of the discussion
Monday outside the white lines,
because on the courts there was
little to express in host Corona del
Mar's 14-4 nonleague victory
over Santa Barbara (5-3), a
perennial power in CIF Southern
Section Division I.
As CdM's standout singles
players swept the Dons, and
Courtney Tenerelli and Ruchlka
Budhraja won easily again in
doubles, the Sea Kings {8-0)
humbled Santa Barbara to main-
tain their top ranking in Division I.
"I think this team is going to
win CIF, frankly,~ Santa Barbara
Coach Sinclair Bill said.
Now that CdM has convinced
most of its CIF Division l chal-
lengers of its early-season domi-
nance, its biggest test will come
Thursday in Sea View League
action against Woodbridge,
ranked third in both the county
and CIF Division I polls.
"It's a giant week," CdM
Coach Tim Mang said, referring
to a three-match week that also
includeS Irvine on the road today.
·1 just hope my second doubles is
ready (for Woodbridge)."
Mang, who knows be can
count on nine sets in singles with
Notre Dame-bound Nina Vaugh-
an and sophomore sensations
Nadia Vaughan and Caylan
Leslie, believes Woodbridge will
stack its doubles on Thwsday,
putting most of the burden on
Budhraja-Te nerelli, CdM's best
doubles team that plays No. 2
behind Jenny Meyer and Robyn
Coleman.
"Adriana Hock.icko (knee
injury) will be back for Wood-
bridge, and (Coach Joan) Willett
will probably move Danielle
Hustedt from singles to doubles,"
Mang said.
Part of the reason for Monday's
untroubled win was because
Santa Barbara played without
senior Sarita Yardi, its top player.
Yardi has twice reached the CIF
Finals in doubles.
"I thought if they had Yardi,
she would give all three of our
girls a nice match, so (her
absence) took some of the excite-
ment out.· Mang said.
Nina Vaughan improved to
22-2 this season (138-42 in
games) by sweeping her three
sets at No. 1 singles, dropping
only one game. Leslie and Nadia
Vaughan als~ swept, losing a
combined five games.

became · absolutely necessary,
Costa Mesa High tightened its
defense Monday night. allowing
the host Mustangs to pull away in
the fourth quarter against Servile
in a nail-biting nonleague water

of the game, but we played hard
and, hey, it's a win," said Mesa
Coach Scott Taylor, whose squad

which set up Hylton's goal.
Hylton, Alex Soria and Hunter
