Piecemakers continue battle with city
• 1llis time, religious

without city permit
By Tim Grenda, Daily Pilot
COSTA MESA -An esti.mat·
ed 15,000 people flocked this
week.end to the Piecemak.ers
Country Store's Harvest Festival,
a two-day fair which featured
hl,lndreds of vendor booths, live
music and food -and all with·
out the blessing of City Hall.
The festival, one of tow simi·
lar parking lot events the group
holds each year, was put on by
the Piecemak.ers -a 40·mem·
ber religious group called The
Body of Christ which owns and
operates the Piecemak.ers Coun·
try Store.
for the second time in two
weeks, the group held an event in
its private property parking lot
without a required city permit.
Large·sca.le. evertts such as
the Harvest festival require a
special events permit, which
costs $100 and allows city otfi·
dals to inspect a planned event
to enswe that it will not cause
excessive traffic, noise or other
problems in the surrounding
community.
The Piecemakers also refused to
get a permit for a much smaller
musical production they pedonned
in its parking lot Sept 27.
The Piecemak.ers' unofficial
leader, 76-year-old Marie
Kolasinski, said Sunday her
group has no intention of giving
up its fight to abolish govern-
ment in the face of local officials
demanding permits.
"The kingdom of God is here,•
Kolasinski said. "He is about to
set up his kingdom lln Earth ...

NEWPORT BEACH -Though the Newport Har-

the elite programs in Orange County, while improv-
mg its winning streak against non-Sea View League
teams to 13, the Sailors' 1997 preleague campaign
was not without adversity.
Coach Jeff Brinkley's squad1 ranked No. 3 in CIF
Southern Section Division V, lost three starting line-
men, covering four starting positions, for a combined
12 games. One of those (center Nathan Matlin) is
gone for the season, another expected out another
three weeks (defensive tackle Mike Stanton) and a
third questionable for this
week's league opener

Oarke, an all-league often·
live tackle expected to dou·
bleat defensive end).
Furthermore, while the
defense has been dominant

ticularly through the air.

COSTA MESA -After polishing off
nonleague opponents by a combined
margin of 169-3, its easy to see why the
Costa Mesa High football team is a little
haughty about its first 5-0 start in school
history
But, accordlng to Mustangs Coach Jer-
ry Howell, complacency is yet another
adversary his playe rs have had little diffi-
culty defeating.
MOur kids are feeling good about what
they've accomplished, but it's a good
cocky,• said Howell, following the latest
romp, a 41-0 homecoming triumph over
pass-happy Anaheim.
Mlt was good to hear them talk in the
locker room after the game about how
they beat guys up, and they did. But I
think they'll keep in mind that the (Pacif-
ic Coast League) competition they'll be
facing from now on will be much
tougher."
Howell acknowledged the caliber of
competition to this point has been less
than awe-inspiring, with the five oppo-
nents, including two from Division X,
posting a combined 8-15 record.
But, he believes the brand of football
the Mustangs are playing should bring
posibve results against the best teams CIF
Southern Section Division VIII has to
offer.
"It won't get any easier, but I'm very
confident the kids can play with any-
body,· Howell said. "The score against
Anaheim could have been just about any-
thing we wanted it to be. It would have
been higher, but we had two touchdowns
called back.
·Tue teams we've played are 8-11
against teams besides us. Saddleback just
beat University (24-6 Friday), Corona del
Mar has won a couple games (including
one over Saddleback) and Gabriellno
(from Division X) just beat Burbank, 19·0.
It's not the level of competition Laguna
Hills has played, but look what happened
to them Friday night (a 34-21 loss to Divi-
sion I neighbor Dana Hills). When you
pound with the big guys lilce that, there
are going to be nights when you'll get

feeling confident, than 3-2 and having to

Howell showered praise on his
defense, which procured seven intercep-
tions and ljmited the Colonists to ~ rush-
ing yards, while also lauding a Me.a
offeme that rolled up-« 1 yards. including
165 through the air.
But Howell's postgame laundry list was
not without a negative notatlon.
"We've really got to work on our
penalties,• be said of the eight infrac:Uom
for 102 yards. •we bad three or four lilly
penalties, ·tncludmg illegal blocks behind
the ball.,,
In addition to the seven inten:epUom,
including three by junioT comerback
...
Rovtnn Sou, who now leads Orange
County with seven of his own, Howell
had high praise for senior Jeremy Via,
who played his first full gains after recov-
ering from a prMeUOn knee injury.
"He really makes a big difference in
our ofteme, • Howell Mid of the returning

Coach Dick Freeman remains ·
encouraged by the weekly work
bis players are putting forth.
•They guys are giving us the
effort," said Freeman, who began"
to list the individuals who have,.
exemplified this unrelentin~
work ethic, before stopping short.'.
"Really, we have a ton of
them," he said. •The thing we
liked about this team was its abil•
ity to work hard and we're still
getting a lot of these guys in prac=
tice, especially the last couple
weeks."
This willingness to work will
help Freeman and his staff geL
the most out of this group, even i(.
others e~ct its final tour .
through the Sea View League (it
will join the Pacific Coast League
next fall) to end without a berth in

"That's what high school foot-
ball really is," Freeman said. •If
we ~~et 100% out of the peo-
ple plaFg for us, we're going to
be OK.
Freeman said the steady
improvement and continued ·
intenslty on the practice field
fuels optimism that the Sea Kings

PIRATES FALL, 31-14
Bucs sink to a new low after Homecoming setback to
Riverside CC, but pick up a pas~g record, as well
By Molly Yanity, Daily Pilot
COSTA l\1ESA -For 15 min-
utes i1 seemed as if the clouds had
parted and a beam of sunshine
was falling onto the Orange Coast
College football team. From the
opening kickoff until the last
moments of the first quarter, an
11-game losing streak was not in
anyone's mind.
For about 15 minutes, the
Pirates looked like they could
compete.
But the crisp night air that
swirled through Orange Coast's
LeBard Stadium swept that vision
away when a routine punt
attempt went awry and memories
of the Pirates' 0-3 start returned.
seemingly dooming the Bucs to
their fourth loss this season, a 31-
14 defeat at the hands of visiting
Riverside College on Coast's
Homecoming celebration.
•Offensively we improved a
lot, but we shot ourselves in the
foot .and didn't score,• Coach Bill
Workman, who is enduring a pro-
gram-record 12-game losing skid,
said. "We threw an interception
in their territory and had a punt
problem. This should have been a
dose game.•
From the opening kickoff until
moments before the end of the
first quarter, the Pirates did some-
thing they haven't done all sea-
son -they moved the ball.
Coast's Chris Brewer returned
the kickoff 22 yards to the Pirates'
27. Thirteen plays later, utilizing
an effective mix of rushing and
passing plays, w;:ore quar-
terback Ch.ad C found full-
back Josh Meyer in the left comer
of the end zone and threaded a
pass between a pair of Riverside
defenders for a touchdown-just
the Bucs' third of the year.
The drive was impressive and
included a 21-ya.rd pass play to
tight end Mike Knox, as well as
eight rushes by David Meleney.
·we did what we thought we
could do based on our practices.
not on (Riverside),• Workman
said of the drive. •we moved the
.1 ( I I I( , I H \ I I
ball. Had we not gotten behind,
we would have continued to run
the ball.•
Going into the homecoming
affair, the Pirates' offense had
produced minus-24 yards on the
ground. Saturday the Bucs racked
up 152 rushing yards.
Additionally, Pirate quarter-
backs Collins and Craig Scott
completed 25 passes, establishing
a new program record.
The first quarter continued to
go the Pirates' way, even after a
42-yard Riverside drive. The
Tigers were knocking on the
Bucs' 25-yard line when quarter-
back Robert Farias launched a
pass into the end zone. I,n~ded
for receiver Ben Gray, the ·ball
tipped off his hands and landed in
the possession of Coast defender
Aaron Ligons for the Pirates' first
interception of the season.
Four plays later, however, the
sky clo.uded over and the dark-
ness set in when a low snap hit
the ground instead of the punter's
hands and ended up being
downed at the 4-yard line. The
Tigers needed just 12 seconds to
tum it into a touchdown.
By halftime, the guests held an
11-point lead. Penalties and
turnovers continued to plague
Coast, but the offense, as Work-
man noted. was clicking.
Second-string quarterback
Scott, a freshman out of Canyon
High, hit Ivan Mercer for a 10-
yard touchdown and Scott ran in
the two-point conversion to cap a
17-play drive that covered 69
yards and made the score 31-14.
"You can't say we're quitting,
and we have reasons to. But we
will not quit,• Workman said.
•we're young and we're 9t!tting
better.•
Collins threw two intercep-
tions, but also competed 11 of 27
attempts for 165 yards and a
touchdown. Scott notched 91
yards on eight completions.
Meleney paced the Pirate
rushing corps with 81 yards.

• Group's five solutions -including

board, City Council.
By Jennifer Armstrong, Daily Pilot
NEWPORT BEACH -Eliminating Newport
Harbor High's chronic parking problems won't
require new structures or complicated plans -
just a little sacrifice and stricter rules, say student
leaders.
The school's annual leadership conference -a
gathering of more than 100 student government
members and club presidents -tackled the issue
at a Friday gathering. After presentations from
city and school officials and hours of discussions,
they pinpointed five solutions they'll present to
the school board and Qty Council.

Friday's discussions,
held in a St. Andrew's
meeting room, revealed a host of problems, from
lack of funding to student laziness.
Some said the current system isn't flawed -it
just needs reorganizing.
•There's no real set place to park.• student Bri-

"There's no orderly format to parking.•
He and others in bis group said students' atti-
tudes are the main hurdle to solving the parlcing
problems.
MYou can park where it's convenient for you, or
you can park where you're supposed to park.·
student Scott Crane said. "Students are inconsid-
erate of residents.•
Student Maureen O'Flynn agreed. ·we should
feel lucky that we have parking,• she said.
After the. small-group discussions, students
reconvened to present ideas and choose five pro-
posals to give to school and city officials. They

COSTA MESA -After polishing off
nonleague opponents by a combined
margin of 169-3, its easy to see why the
Costa Mesa High football team is a little
haughty about its first 5·0 start in school
history.
But, according to Mustangs Coach Jer·
ry Howell, complacency is yet another
adversary his players have had little diffi.
culty defeating.
"Our kids are feeling good about what
they've accomplished, but it's a good
cocky," said Howell, following the latest
romp, a 41 -0 homecoming triwnph over
pass-happy Anaheim.
"It was good to hear them talk in the
locker room after the game about how
they beat guys up, and they did. But I
think they'll keep in mind that the (Pacif·
ic Coast League) competition they'll be
fa cing from now on will be much
tougher."
Howell acknowledged the caliber of
competition to this point has been less
than awe-inspiring, with the five oppo·
nents, including two from Division X,
posting a combined 8· 15 record.
But, he believes the brand of football
the Mustangs are playing should bring
positive results against the best teams CIF
Southern Section Division VIII has to
offer.
"It won't get any easier, but I'm very
confident the kids can play with any·
body," Howell said. "The score against
Anaheim could have been just about any·
thing we wanted it to be. It would have
been higher, but we had two touchdowns
called back.

PIRATES FALL, 31-14
Bucs sink to a new low after Homecoming setback to
Riverside CC, but pick up a passing record, as well.
By Molly Yanrty, Daily Pilot
COSTA l'vtESA -For 15 min-
utes it seemed as if the clouds had
parted and a beam of sunshine
was falling onto the Orange Coast
Colleqe football team. From the
opening kickoff until the last
moments of the first quarter, an
11-game losing streak was not in
anyone's mind.
For about 15 . minutes, the
Pirates looked like they could
compete.
But the crisp night air that
swirled through Orange Coast's
LeBard Stadium swept that vision
away when a routine punt
attempt went awry and memories
of the Pirates' 0-3 start returned,
seemingly dooming the Bucs to
their fourth loss this season, a 31-
14 defeat at the hands of visiting
Riverside Colleqe on Coast's
Homecoming celebation.
•Offensively we improved a
lot, but we shot ourselves in the
foot .and didn't score,• Coach Bill
Workman, who is enduring a pro-
gram-record 12-game losing skid,
said. "We threw an interception
in their territory and had a punt
problem. This should have been a
close game.•
Prom the opening kickoff until
moments before the end of the
first quart.er, the Pirates did some-
thing they haven't done all sea-
son -they moved the ball.
Coast's Chris Brewer returned
the kickoff 22 yards to the Pirates'
27. lbirteen plays later, utilizing
an effective mix of rushing and
passing plays, sophomore quar-
terback Chad CoWns found full.
back Josh Meyer in the left comer
of the end zone and threaded a
pass between a pair of Riverside
defenders for a touchdown -just
the Bucs' third of the year.
The drive was impressive and
included a 21-yard pass play to
tight end Mike Knox. as well as
eight rushes by David Meleney.
·we did what we thought we
could do based on our practices,
not on (Riverside),• Workman
said of the drive. •we moved the
' ( I (I (I I H \I I
ball. Had we not gotten behind,
we would have continued to run
the ball•
Going into the homecoming
affair, the Pirates' offense had
produced minus-24 yards on the
ground. Saturday the Bucs racked
up 152 rushing yards.
Additionally, Pirate quarter-
backs Collins .and Craig Scott
completed 25 passes, establishing.
a new program record.
The first quarter continued to
go the Pirates' way, even after a
42-yard Riverside drive. The
Tigers were knocking on the
Bucs' 25-yard line when quarter-
back Robert Farias launched a
pass into the end zone. Intended
for receiver Ben Gray, the ball
tipped off his hands and landed in
the possession of Coast defender
Aaron Ligons for the Pirates' first
interception of the season.
Four plays later, however, the
sky clouded over and the dark-
ness set in when a low snap hit
the ground instead of the punter's
bands and ended up being
downed at the 4-yard line. The
Tigers needed just 12 seconds to
tum it into a touchdown.
By halftime, the guests held an
11-point lead. Penalties and
turnovers continued to plague
Coast, but the offense, as Work-
man noted, was clicking.
Second-string quarterback
Scott, a freshman out of Canyon
High, hit Ivan Mercer for a 10-
yard touchdown and Scott ran in
the two-point conversion to cap a
17-play drive that covered 69
yards and made the score 31-14.
·vou can't say we're quitting,
and we have reasons to. But we
will not quit,• Wodanan said.
·we're young and we're getting
better .•
Collins threw two intercep-
tions, but also competed 17 of 27
attempts for 165 yards and a
touchdown. Scott notched 91
yards on eight completions.
Meleney paced the Pirate
rushing corps with 81 yards.
