Newport Harbor High School homecom-

in miracles. Seeing her classmate, Amanda
Arthur, present· at Saturday night's cere-
monies where she was crowned 1997 home-
coming queen, reaffirmed Byers' faith.
"She's a part of us," Byers said. "She rep-
resents our class. It means something to all
of us that she's fighting and that she's come
so far. The fact that she could be here is a
real miracle.•
Walking down the red carpet, escorted
by her father, Allan Arthur on the left and
step-father Alex Maese on her right, Aman-

recline into the middle seat, between the
other contenders for homecoming queen.

City takes
first look
at Borders
project
•Developer is proposing
to raze Mesa theater and
other businesses to make
room for bookstore.
By Tim Grenda, Daily Pilot
COSTA MESA -The City
Council is scheduled tonight to
take a first look at a plan to
demolish the Mesa theater and
other old buildings across from
Triangle Square and allow a new
commercial development,
anchored by a Borders Book
store to be built there.
Borders Costa Mesa wants to
tear down the movie theater,
Mesa Blueprint and Stag Bar at
the comer of East 19th S\reet
and Newport Boulevard, and •
replace them with one of the
nationwide bookstore chain
locations. .
The City Council will be giv-
ing the Borders proposal its first
review this week during a public
bearing set to begin at 6:30 p.m .
in the City Council chambers of
City Hall, 71 Fair Drive.
U given preliminary approval
tonight, the council would go
over the same plans again at the
following meeting, when offi-
cials could give final approval
The council had been slated
to consider the proposed devel-
opment last month. But That
hearing was pushed back until
this week because the applicant
needed extra time to do environ-
mental testing on the site.
Some locals iecently stepped
forward in defense of the Mesa
theater, an aging facility at the
north end of the Borders proper-
ty they claim is a city historical
monument which could be reno-
vated and used as a performirlg
arts center.
But if the Borders' develop-
ment plan is approved by city
leaders, that site and four other
buildings on the land would be
tom down in the name of
progress.
The proposed Borders Book
store is a one-story, 25,200·
square-foot building which will
include a cafe and outdoor din-
ing area along Newport Boule-
vard.
A second, smaller building
would be built in later phueS
behind the Borders Book store
along Fullerton Avenue.
U approved, demolition o1 the
theater and other buildings .ls
expected to take about aiI
weeks and construction of the

And amidst the fun and and

It's been less than six months since
the school went through the shock

BECOMING RATILED?
One of the most common noises
that drivers hear coming from
their engines is a rattling sound
that occurs upon acceleration.
This noise, known as pinging,
results when the mixture in the
combustion chamber explodes
before it should. If left unchecked,
pinging (detonation) can lead to
serious damage to the pistons.
The first step to find a cure
involves a check of the owner's
manual to make sure that the car
is using the correct octane gas. If
pinginQ persists, the car should be
checked for overheating. A faulty
thermostat or loss of pressure in
the cooling system can cause the
engine to run so hot that it pings.
Proper engine timing is also
critical in preventing ping. Ping
can also result from a hose or wire
disconnected from an emission-
control device.
INT: The switch to a hiaher
e fuel~ld only be made
no othtf cure provides a fix
' orping.

Inside linebacker Chrla Shan-
ley, tackle Matthew Rud81ill and

quently mentioned suspects
respc>!lSil>le for trapping Wolver-
ine quarterback Jo.IOO Hill in his
own end zone, one play after
Mesa had been stopped inches
from the goal line on fourth down.
But there seeDMKl to be as
many versioDI of tbe play as their
were Mustangs on tbe field. with
false modesty, team unity and
downright confusion, perhaps,
conspiring to deny an inquisitive
reporter the definitive scoop.
Coach Jeny Howell, with the
benefit of slow-motion videotape
review, finally provided his por-
trayal of the play:
"(Hill) didn't quite get the ball
to the halfback. then seemed to
pause for a split second, before
(outside linebacker Vince
Hamade, heretofore ignored in
eyewitness accounts) hits him in
tbe end t.one ••
HOwell said Hamade dldli't ~

however, wbic:h required the ser·
vices ol an accomplice to ftnisb
the job.
•(Hill) may have gotten out of
the end zone, except Shanley
comes up and ends it."
Howell said the media isn't
alone when it comes to identify-
ing Individual gallantry on this
defensive unit, which shares the
Orange County lead in fewest
points allowed with 10.
·0ur coaching staff has the
same probJem every week when
we band out our (player of the

exi'lained. •There are some yea.rs
you have trouble finding guys to
reward each week. But this year.
we've been asking ourselves,
'How do we explain this guy not
getting (the award)?' "
Like abundant depth and con-
tending with overconfidence that
comes from being the first 6-0
team in school history, however,
this is a quandary Howell is con-
tent to combat.
, Still, in all, there were posi-
tives for Freern,an to report from
the most lopsided loss in Corona
del Mar's 36-season varsity histo-
ry.
"We came out healthy and I
think we hung in there,• said
freeman, who acknowledged his
players were disappointed, but
not thoroughly discouraged by
the one-sided outcome.

turnovers helped pad the final
margin, but gave ample credit to
a Santa Margarita team most
believe will win its second
straight CIP Southern Section
Oiyision V championship in
December.
• •we didn't match up very well

(nan said. "But they do so much

Though the varsity managed
to escape injury, Freeman said
Brad Rothwell, competing for the
Sea King sophomores against
Santa Margarita's junior varsity
squad Thursday, suffered a bro-

"He's going to be OK," said
Freeman, who noted the break
was not as severe as originally
feared.

"(Lynwood) was like Laguna
Hills, in that we knew how to
win.• Liebengood recalled. "We
had some boys up front who
could hit and block and we had
backs who could fly. We took bets
on what the score was going to
be, because we knew that just
about every time we walked on
the field., we were going to wm.
"Jones (who amassed 259
yards and five touchdowns in a
50-12 Pacific Coast League-open-
ing victory) is probably the best
back I've seen since I've been at
Estancia. He has all of what it
takes to be a big-time back and
I'm sure we'll hear from him
again in college. He has power
and speed, and he's able to show
it, because their offensive line is
pretty good, too."
Uebengood said his over-
matched and undersized Eagles
battled gamely through the first
twQ quarters, even leading, 6-0,
after one period.
"We took the ball on the open-
ing drive and went 80 yards with
no mistakes," Uebengood said of
a touchdown march he termed his
team's most impressive of the sea-
son.
•Our kids came PU! and

Llebengood said the Eagles
escaped without injury, in con-
trast to last year's league-opening
drubbing by the Hawks, which
left his team crippled for the
remainder of the season.
Uebengood, who elected to sit
leading tackler German Diaz to
allow his sprained ankle another
week to heal, said he pulled vital
starters, including wingbacks
James Dawkins and Manu
Tanielu, with more than a quarter
remaining.
"They were mad at me, but 1
didn't want to take the chance of
getting them hurt I'm just glad
the contract bas ended (the two
schools will compete in different
leagues, beginning next fall)."
Uebengood was pleased with
the productivity of his ground
game (239 yards and 30:33 in
time of possession).
"We moved the ball, but we
just couldn't stop them," he
explained. "We ran 66 plays. but
they'd get the ball and score in
one, and we'd get the ball right
back. We have some guys going
both ways and I think that really
took a toll on them."
Uebengood also compliment-
ed Laguna Hills for its brief and
tastefully done ceremony to hon·
or Jones, after he broke the
record on his first carry of the
third quart.er.
"We didn't mind it at all. I was
