Newport Harbor High School homecom- ing princess Cryssa Byers already believed in miracles. City takes first look at Borders project •Developer is proposing to raze Mesa theater and other businesses to make room for bookstore. By Tim Grenda, Daily Pilot COSTA MESA -The City Council is scheduled tonight to take a first look at a plan to demolish the Mesa theater and other old buildings across from Triangle Square and allow a new commercial development, anchored by a Borders Book store to be built there. Borders Costa Mesa wants to tear down the movie theater, Mesa Blueprint and Stag Bar at the comer of East 19th S\reet and Newport Boulevard, and • replace them with one of the nationwide bookstore chain locations. . The City Council will be giv- ing the Borders proposal its first review this week during a public bearing set to begin at 6:30 p.m . in the City Council chambers of City Hall, 71 Fair Drive. U given preliminary approval tonight, the council would go over the same plans again at the following meeting, when offi- cials could give final approval The council had been slated to consider the proposed devel- opment last month. But That hearing was pushed back until this week because the applicant needed extra time to do environ- mental testing on the site. Some locals iecently stepped forward in defense of the Mesa theater, an aging facility at the north end of the Borders proper- ty they claim is a city historical monument which could be reno- vated and used as a performirlg arts center. But if the Borders' develop- ment plan is approved by city leaders, that site and four other buildings on the land would be tom down in the name of progress. The proposed Borders Book store is a one-story, 25,200· square-foot building which will include a cafe and outdoor din- ing area along Newport Boule- vard. A second, smaller building would be built in later phueS behind the Borders Book store along Fullerton Avenue. U approved, demolition o1 the theater and other buildings .ls expected to take about aiI weeks and construction of the new Borders Books buildin99 another 20 months, officials sa.kL COMMUNITY Costa Mela 1811i.deiU Delia An.denon received the Excel- lence in Service awe.rd M:>m the California Association of Comi;nu· nity Managers. One of the most common noises that drivers hear coming from their engines is a rattling sound that occurs upon acceleration. This noise, known as pinging, results when the mixture in the combustion chamber explodes before it should. If left unchecked, pinging (detonation) can lead to serious damage to the pistons. The first step to find a cure involves a check of the owner's manual to make sure that the car is using the correct octane gas. If pinginQ persists, the car should be checked for overheating. A faulty thermostat or loss of pressure in the cooling system can cause the engine to run so hot that it pings. Proper engine timing is also critical in preventing ping. Ping can also result from a hose or wire disconnected from an emission- control device. INT: The switch to a hiaher e fuel~ld only be made no othtf cure provides a fix ' orping. Coach Jeny Howell, with the benefit of slow-motion videotape review, finally provided his por- trayal of the play: "(Hill) didn't quite get the ball to the halfback. then seemed to pause for a split second, before (outside linebacker Vince Hamade, heretofore ignored in eyewitness accounts) hits him in tbe end t.one •• HOwell said Hamade dldli't ~ a tj>mp1etely deen sbOt OD him., however, wbic:h required the ser· vices ol an accomplice to ftnisb the job. •(Hill) may have gotten out of the end zone, except Shanley comes up and ends it."
