The Issue: School board
members recently debated
funding and other issues
that should receive top
priority in the coming
school year.
I n this case, I have to say the superin-
tendent is rig ht on. Textbooks, stan-
dards, funding, reading -these are
not jazzy issues but they must come
hrst. School board trustees mean well,
I'm sure.
But their pet projects for starting new
programs or eliminating controversial
old ones sound almost trivial by compar-
ison. Our kids are getting shortchanged
every day. Too many students, too few
courses, too fe w books to go around and
outmoded books at that.
Teachers working to meet standards
that are too low and fuzzy at best in
buildings and classrooms that are shab-
by and depressing.
Please, please let the school board
see that we have nearly lost the battle
for education in Ne wport Beach and
Costa Mesa . Let the frills go. Focus on
the basics. Teachers, books, buildings
and standards.

What would my school goals be? Do I
believe that some school bodrd issues
can be disruptive to classrooms?
Absolutely.
As we read the Daily Pilot, it looks
like that every school board member
and the superintendent are going in a
different direction.
Each one seems to have their own
agenda. After all this time together it
seems that they lack a true direction.
The public petty bickering has to be
d.isruptive in all classrooms Kro

agreed goalsf
One thing for sure, is what Superin-

sets the goals for the disb'ict. • When are

You ask what issues I'd like to see the

I'm not sure if disruptive is the right
word to describe certain goals in the

The board needs to focus on the goal
for the greatest impact on the greatest
number of students and those goals
should contribute to student learning.
If that's the basis for selecting goals, I
have to agree with {Superintendent

TUESDAY, OCTOIElt 21, 1997 •!.
Sand, bamboo and
• mosquitoes made the
~arly days memorable
.
I don't. suppose that many
people living in New York
really car~ about what Man-
~ttan looked like back when
some canny Dutchman bought
the whole island from the Amer-
ican Indians for $24 worth of
trinkets. On the other hand, per-
haps some present-day resi-
dents of Newport Beach might
possibly be interested in how
this town looked a mere 76
years ago when I first arrived.
In 1921, this town consisted
of four small villages. Let's start
with Balboa because that's
where I started.
Balboa stretched from Maiil
Street to the Newport I-:Iarbor
Yacht Club. A few houses trick-
led down the bayfront to about
where the "Y" is formed.
Beyond that, sand, lots and lots
of sand. In the middle of all that
sand was a small grove of bam-
boo. That was Balboa.
Going west from Balboa
toward Newport, again th'ere
was lots and lots of sand until
one came to the original gram-
mar school. I guess that was
about the beginning of old
Newport, which then stretched
up to about 40th Street. New-
port was where most of the
year-round residents lived. The
rest of the town was mostly
summer cottages that stood
empty all winter.
. Lido Isle didn't exist. It was
called Electric Island and was
bare of habitation.
· Balboa Island fared a little
better. There was a small cluster
of houses..MO'U.Dd the ferry land-
ing and a few more scattered
along Marine Avenue, but that
was about all. Oh, yes, Balboa
Island had mosquitoes, lots and
lots of mosquitoes, so many in
fact that a few years later, I had
to borrow the ferry one night to
get off the island and away from
all those mosquitoes.
Corona del Mar consisted of
a small hotel on the bluff facing
the bay and a half-dozen houses
on the bluff overlooking what is
now called by locals the Main
Beach. The rest was 700 acres of
mostly unsold IOts.

go to Los Angeles by the Pacific
Electric. You could go to Santa
Ana by stage. On the way, you
went through what is now Costa
Mesa, then just some apple
groves and few people living on
one-acre lots. From Santa Ana
you could drive to Los Angeles
via Anaheim, Fullerton, La
Habra and Whittier Boulevard, a
long ride on a two-lane high-
way. Going to San Diego was
even worse, a two-lane dusty
road across the Irvine and Moul-
ton ranches, then from Capistra-'
no via the old El Camino Real to
San Diego. It was a full day's
travel and not worth it.
Back in Newport Beach, we
had a one-man Police Depart-
ment and a volunteer Fire
Department. That took care of
public safety. There were no
school buses. All children
walked to school except a kid
whose family lived somewhere
on the Irvine Ranch. He rode a
horse to school.
Newport Harbor? We called it
Balboa Bay, and it consisted of
miles and miles of mud flats
with a few channels cut through
here and there.
It was a wonderful place to
live. No overcrowding, no traffic
problems, no smog, just miles
and miles of clean sand and
very few people to pollute the
environment.

They had wanted to do some

The Skabens help screen

their patients: One man had
barbed wire imbedded in his skin
aaoss his chest for 60 years.
One girl aied the first time she
wore glasses, thrilled th.at she
could finally go to school and
read.
The Skahens' sons -James,
9, and Jack, 13 -have gone
along on the last four trips. While
there, they visited the local
school, where James taught
some students who had never
seen crayons before how to color.
They also brought with them
books donated by their class-
mates at Harbor Day School.
•1t's so important to me that
my boys do this kind of work."
Sandy said.
In February -the off-season
for towiJm because u~s so hot -
they'll take the 12-hour flight to
Tul11e Island once again. About
30 crates full ot medical supplies,
all' donated. wfD precede them.
When they arrive, they'll unload
the crates and sterilize the room
that will be their clinic.
1be island radio station will
announce the doctors' arrival,
and their appdntment book will
fill up within a day or two.
Patients will cane from all the
neighboring islands, crowding
into local homes to stay until they
can' get the free treatment.
Patients show up by the hun-

Mustang receiver chases down end
zone-bound Aliso interceptor to set
stage for victorious second-half rally;
keeping Mesa on the perfection list.
By Barry Faulkner. Daily Piiot
Ithad been nine games and 50 weeks
since the Costa Mesa High football team
had come from behind, but senior
receiver Jerry Cleveland showed his
teammates precisely how it was done.
With less than four minutes remaining in the
third quarter of the Pacific Coast League opener
against Aliso Niguel and the Mustangs trailing,
7-3, Cleveland, the Mesa's leading receiver,
flanked wide on fourth-and-six from the Aliso 12.
Mesa Coach Jerry Howell said later he ruled
against kicking a 29-yard field goal into the wind,
then fostered further second-guessing by electing
to throw.
Mesa had completed just one of five previous
passes (for 2 yards), and
the Wolverines had
intercepted two others.
Aliso safety Johnny
Tran made it three
interceptions in six
attempts by stepping in
front of the errant aerial at
his own 2-yard line. Tran
quickly accelerated to a
sprint with what appeared
to be a touchdown convoy
in place along the southern :
sideline. :
Mesa halfback Steve Herzog,
however, quickly retreated in pursuit, and
occupied the interference long enough to force
Tran to read his blockers and adjust his path.
But with Herzog effectively screened by
blockers, 1t appeared the Wolverines were mere
seconds away from extending their lead to 14-3
against a team that had allowed just three points
in its first five games of the season. •
Cleveland, however, halted this hypothetical, :
streaking from behind, dosing at least a 15-yard
gap, and dragging Tran down at the Mesa 33,
terminating the 65-yard return with 3:31 left in the
third quarter.
Cleveland's hustle. though huge at the time,
became amplified even more when Mesa
defensive tackle Chris McBride fell on an errant
Aliso option pitch on the very next snap.
The Mustangs marched inside the Aliso 1 on
the ensuing possession, which ultimately led to
Mesa's defense coming up with a safety and a :
25-yard Davtd Weir fumble return for a touchdown :
en route to an 18-7 win that kept them unbeaten. :
"Cleveland saved the game, but Herzog made :
(Tran) slow down so {Cleveland) could catch him,"
Howell said. "That (would-be touchdown) might
have been a fatal momentum swing there.•

•If we win our rematntng dual
counselor Bill Wettengell, before the
season began, but was told there was
no r,roblem.
I questioned this, in depth, in the
athletic department and in the coun-
seling office, and they assured me she
was eligible," Busi said. "I hold the
counselln9 and athletic departments at
fault in this."
Busi said questions arose Friday
whether Gomez, who began high
school in Mexico and enrolled at Cos-
ta Mesa mi~way through the 1996-97
school year, had exhausted the eight-
semester window of eligibility allowed
under CIF rules (beginning when a
student initiates b.is/ber high school
education).
Busi said Costa Mesa athletic
administrators petitioned the Southern
Section for a hardship waiver, but the
petition was defljed Monday.
Costa Mesa counselor Bill Wetten-
gel accepted blame for erroneously
clearing Gomez before the season.
"It was one of those kind of oddball
deals and I have to say, honestly, we
blew it,• Wettengel said.
Gomez Competed on the girls track
and field team last spring as a senior.
But, Busi said, school officials later
ruled her academic status was that of a
junior, which left her one full year
short of graduation.
"I had concerns because she was a
senior last year, but they told me there
had been a mistake made on her age,•
said Busi, who noted Gomez's academ-
ic standing was further complicated by
attending adult education classes for
one year, prior to emolling at Mesa.
Busi said the loss of Gomez will
meets with Laguna Hills and Laguna
Beach and finish third at league finals,
we should still be able to go to (the CIP
Division IV preliminaries),• Busi said.
"But we were looking at a team that
was probably going to the (the C1F
state champlonships), that'a now going
to have a hard time."
Gomez contributed significantly to
league victories over University (26-31
on Oct. 16), Estancia (18-40 on Oct. 9)
and Aliso Niguel (26-29 on Oct. 2), vic-
tories which will now be forfeited by
the Mustangs.
She finished third individually
against University, second against
Estancia and sixth against Aliso
Niguel and bad also done well at three
invitationals.
Howell and Leahy could not be
reached for comment.

appearance at the lronman.
Pugh, 40, began racing in 1981
when triathlons started to boom,
and he's been trying to qualify for
the lronman since.
In addition to his victory at
Ventura this year, Pugh placed
second at the Oceanside
lhathlon, fourth at Bakersfield
and 12th at Memphis.
•Fortunately, my job allows for
travel, which allows me to race all
over the United States," Pugh, a
flight attendant for 12 years, said
before the race.
·Also, behind every man is a
greater woman, my wife (Nancy
Brown), because wfthout her sup-
port this would not be possible."
Pugh was one of a limited
number of participants (1,500) to
qualify for the lronman, the crow-

said.
The lronman, which will air on
