And Leigh Steinberg, the ·
Newport Beach sports agent
who is a perennial member of
the Daily Pilot's 103 Most
Influential list, finds himsell
hip-deep in sporting legends
in the current issue of The
Sporting Ne ws.
The weekly magazine pub-
lished a list of the 100 "most
powerful people in sports for
the 20th century• in its Dec.
20 edition. Steinberg, who
represents everyone from Dal·
las Cowboy quarterback Troy
Aikman to Jeff George of the
Minnesota Vikings, was
selected No. 90 -only one
spot behind Tiger Woods and
a tun nine spots ahead of
Wayne Gretzky. The list is so
exclusive that the only actual
athlete in the top 10 is
Muhammad Ali.
But, just in case Steinberg's
head starts to swell, it's worth
noting that No. 100 is the
Chicken -baseball's favorite

New Year ~ resolution: learri fro ni our k ids
A s you r ad th.i column,
with any luck, I am
somewhere in New
Mexico, on a train to Albu-
querque, then on to Santa F.e.
As you might have guei. ed
by now, vacations are a time
for another Sandoval adven-
hue, not a tirno to sit dround
and relax. Stay tuned for an
· update on Jan. 10
As we have had a respite
from my daily dinner update
on what is happening at
school, I realized 1ust how-
much I learn from my chil-
dren's outstanding education.
I can only ima9ll'!e how much
Our district's collective dill·
dren learn. My older daughter
has mailed off all her college
applications. This gave me
. another chance to reflect on
the educational and extracur-
ricular purswts provided by
the school or the teachers
guiding students to golden
opportunities.
For instance, Web page
design is one of the fastest-
growing industries, dS more
and more businesses want a
page of their own. Our lods
have the ability to learn it
during Web design class. The
school furnishes them an
expert teacher and the latest
equipment. Most of the dis-
trict schools have their own
Web pages, where the school
can communicate to the pdl-
ents, students and community,
be it the local community or
one somewhere else in the
world. The school can post
pictures, schedules dnd
important news One school
has set up a Web page for
students to talk with promi-
nent scientists m the commu-
ruty about their science pro-
jects.
While most schools have
offered journalism classes
throughout the years, now
reporters can e-matl in their
stories and load m theu pic-
tures from digital cameras.
With the use of up-to-date
software, newspaper layout
talces on a whole new techno-
logical experience. These
skills are useful in school pro-
EDUCATIONALLY
SPEAKING
gay
geiser-sondovo~
jects, as well as tn bu.'imcss. ln
addition, kids learn how to
sniff out a story and ask the
right questions to get the facts
they need. My favorites axe
the opinion columns, where
kids have to justify theu posi-
tions. Students die hkely to
write back with an opposing
view, whlch teaches logic and
debate.
The TV class has served
the ctistnct two ways. Not only
are our students learning
interviewing, taping and edit-
ing slolls, the district is clble to
memorialize many of its sp£>
oal events. With its own TV
station, the district can show
the community the grcdt
things that are done by anrl
for our children.
Choir classes have opened
the door to math slolls, where
it is necessary to recognil:e
the mathematical nature of
notes. The students learn to
sing m toreign languages.
Entertaming at local venues
has exposed them to the
plight of the homeless, the
diseases of the elderly and the
lifestyles of the nch and
famous.
Biology ISn't JUSt about
cells any more. By studying
about dorrunant and recessive
genes, the melting pot of stu-
dents m our district can sec
the 'gene mteractions at work
as they look around the class-
room. A lesson on the biologi-
cal nature of alcoholism
makes some students realize
they po ses:. tra1ti. that make
them more suscepbble.
Engh h isn't JUSt a pelting
test dny more. The assign·
menl is to bP.come one with a
91eek god. Pre.-.cnt the per-
sona of that god, using visual
aids, which can include a
power-µoint presentation Nol
only are the students learning
history and lilNature, they are
lf>urmng communication and
presentation skills. When you
. throw m the benefit or being
aule to present the informa-
iion usmg some of the latest
tools of technology, it
becomei. a super ass1grunent.
The teacher adds the nght
flavor by takmg on numerous
roles himself in the Feast of
the Gods. Our dinner conver-
sutions about the unit let me
brush-up on some long for-
gotten information.
Band teaches that one
can't always beat the drum to
a different rhythm. Maybe it
is becau5c bands don't really
muke 1t with JUSt one star
player. Band members seem
to have a camdradcrie that
goes well beyond the class-
room. It is a skill they can use
their entire lives, even if it is
only for th<'lr own enjoyment.
As I watched the lods
beam with pnde after the
recent round of holiday con-
certs I attended, it made me
realize we need to give our
kids standing ovabons more
often lor all of the things they
team, dnd the long hours they
put m learrung it So as we
start the new year, let's
resolve to focus on all of the
good things that happen in
our kids' lives every day. Let's
take the time to listen about
all o( the little things that hap-
pen in and out of school each
day. Let's take the tune to
thank the teachers, even if it
is w1th a fast phone message
Let's take the time to applaud
for our klds' efforts. Let's see
whttt our kids can teach us.

Jn 1982, Tunes Mirror sold

Ingersoll also had a printing
contract with USA Today, and
for veraJ y~rs. the Southern
Calilorrua version of that news-
paper was printed at the Pi.lot.

Ingersoll AdcU1l6 quic)dy sold
the Pilot to Page Oroup Pub·
lishing, run by the flamboyant
Robert E. Page, the tanner
publisher of the Chicago Sun-
Times dlld Bostop Herald. .
The Pilot's circulation
dipped. to under 10,000.
"ThP newspaper has done
cverythjng it can," Page said at
one meeting, "but we still can't
ptss off our last 10,000 read-
ers."· •
After a bitter fight with his
in'vestors, Page was foi'cioly
removed from his publisher's
office in 1991 and replaced by
James Gressin~r.
And the bad times conbn·
ued. At one point, the Pilot
reduced its publishing sched-
ule to three days a week. One
Newport Beach city official
dubbed it the "Every Oth~r
Daily Pilot." That experiment
lasted only months before the
Pilot went back to being a dai-
ly.
However, the newspaper
had just about run out of mon-
ey in 1993 when it wds bought
by Tunes MUTor, which pulled
the Pilot back from the brink of
bankruptcy. Tom Johnson took
over as publisher. ·
And then an interesting
thing happened.
Los Angeles Times execu-
tives decided to bundle the
Pi.lot with the Times. ln other
words, subscribers couldn't get
the Pilot without Ute Times and
vice versa. And that not only
boosted the Tunes circulation,
it also nearly tripled the Pilot
circuldtion to 27,000 overnight.
Tirnes executives have been
encouraged enough by the
partnership to start 15 mini·
Pilots -called Our Tunes -
throughout Southern Califor-
nia, from Ventura to Ontario to
San Clemente. The Tunes

division -which has 23 news-
papers in d.11-is run by former
Pilot echtor William Lobdell and
former managing editor Steve
Marble.
"I have enjoyed the Daily
Pilot over all those years since I
moved here nght out of college
in the early '50s," said fonner
Mayor Hart. "There's nothing
like a hometown newspaper."
At about the same time, Pilot
executives made a tactical
deosion -narrow the paper's
focus, abandon international
and national news and concen-
trate on the two communities
that have supported the paper
from the start: Newport Beach
and Costa Mesa.
"We were having an identi-
ty crisis," Sdld Marble, who
joined the Daily Pilot as a
report.er in 1980. "But when we
realized we were. the home-

what we had to do." It was

But after only one day on the
job he regretted m~g the
move.
"l thought J made the
biggest mistake," Johnson
said. "The Pilot wa. in s;uch dls-
repair" ·
Instead of ledvmg, he rolled
·up his sleeves and made some
serious changes, including
having the paper reacquaint
itself with the commuruty it
serves.
Johnson JOtned local com-
muruty boards and the newl)-
paper sponsored scores of loc.aJ
events.
Meanwhile, the editorial
team tried to re tore the news-
paper's content to its glory
clays. Much of the staff was
replaced and the new Journal-•
tSls -photographers, reporters
and ectito·rs -reshaped the

The hard work paid off in
1994 when th~ paper won 11

Marian Bergeson, a former
state senator and county super-
visor, also believes the Pilot is
dJl important part of the New-
port-Mesa puz1Je.
"I don't think there is any-
thing that can supplant the
local hometown newspaper,"
she said. "It stimulates agree-
ments and d.isagreemenL5."
In 1999, the newspaper cel-
ebrdlcd the second straight
year of profits after more than
20 years in the red.
"There aren't miilly conunu-
nity dailies left m the country,"
Johnson said. "We're happy to

sure our readers are too."
Bill Lobdell, Steve Marble.

Mesa boys basketball coach Bob Serven sounds off, and the response is a startllng 9-3 record for the Mustangs.
METAMORPHOSIS

1n one of the most improba.bie of
leads to a boys basketball scenario as the
year comes to a conclusion as ever con-
sidered in this region -the Newport-
Mesa District -comes the following:
Costa Mesa High's Mustangs, 9-3
and favored ta do very well at the
Canyon Tournament, wruch opens
today, have their travel tickets to the
CCF DiVi.sion Ill Playoffs virtually in
hand, even before the Pacific Coast
League w~ unfold Jan. 7.
"That's how J understand it," said
first-year coach Bob Serven Thursday
as be surveyed his team's early
encounters, wruch have surprised even
the staunchest of Mesa fans, sans per-
haps Serven himself, an eternal opti-
mist who literally breathes fire into his
players' veins. ·rm not sure about league, who
knows?,• said Serven, when consider-
ing what rus team is up against in the
from of the Univen;ity-Corona del Mar-
. Estancia-Laguna Beach blockade.
"But I know this. We're in Division m and they're only going to make it
one division, with the stipulation that
any team with 10 wins is automatically
granted a berth to the playoffs.
"That's how my newsletter from the
coaching association puts it."
That's a ways down the road, how-
ever, and right now Serven is thin.king
about the Canyon Tournament, where
his team will most likely hook up with
a solid Loara outfit on Tuesday at 4:30,
providing both teams hold up as heavy
favorites today.
Serven said the great metamorpho-
sis, from perennial also-ran to con-
tender, is only a matter of "little
things."
"One thing these guys have is some
fight in them," said Serven. ·we held
Brennon Martin, who is headed for
Texas A&M, to five pomts with team
defense.·
"They're pretty much a blue collar
team," continued Serven of his Mus-
tangs, "and they're good at accepting
constructive cnticism and applying it."
Shaun Ferryman, a 6·3 center who
averages 4.4 points a game, is a good
example.
Although he often shares starting
duties with junior Mike Payne. it's his
basic competitiveness which brings out
the best in everyone (as doe:, Serven,
himself, whose own fire in game situa-
tions is legendary, going back to his
coaching at Newport Harbor).
Among the vanquished: Laguna
Hills and 'Ifabuco Hills, as well as A.B.
Miller and Sunny Hills, in the span of
six days. Most everyone is doing well
at this stage of the season, but clearly,
the stunner is the rise of the Mustangs'
boys team.
