Going by the steady stream of El Niflo updates coming at us from every media, every mail- box, every conversation. there seems little hope of being spared. I'm nuts for Prank Capra and his work. Capra was a Sicilian immigrant. He was very bright and very tough, in spite of the fact that he was a little more than 5 feet tall. In 1903, he arrived at Ellis Island -a 6- year-old peasant child who'd never heard a word of English. 1\velve years later he was a freshman at Cal Tech. He worked two, sometimes three jobs to pay his tuition and help support his family and still excelled in Cal Tech's engineer- ing program. After a stint in the U.S. Army in World War I, he knocked around Hollywood in odd jobs until he met <:omedy king Mac Sennett. He learned his craft churning out one-reel- ers for Sennett and Hal Roach. Much of Capra's career was at Columbia Pictures, under the tyrannical Harry Cohen. (All the old studio moguls were tyrants.) Just the thought of being called to Cohen's office would make the most seasoned Hollywood pros fall).t on the spot -except Frank Capra. In those days, confronting the head of a major studio was unthinkable, even for an enor- mously successful director. Capra would do it once in the morning, then burst into Cohen's office at the end of a shooting day to put an exclamation point on it with his enormous cigar. In World Wu U. be volun- teered and served u a wartime film maker -another reason I like him. He produced and directed the •Wby We Fight• leJ'iel, which was tbe gold standard of docu- mentaries for the nezt three decades. When I wu a film stu- dent at USC, I was lucky enough to get picked for a fe!Dinar with Frank Capra. I was so awestruck, I don't think I ever said a word. But it did give me my favorite Capra story. A self.impressed grad student asked a torturously long question about a French director who insisted on shooting a scene at exactly the time of the day called for in the saipt. Did Capra think there was a value in that or not? (It took. this kid about four minutes to get those two sentences out.) You could hear a pin drop as Capra took. a long drag on his cigar, looked at the ceiling, looked back at the grad student, then gave his answer-•He'll get over it.• There are some critics today who are trying to re-cast Capra as a bad guy for being an infor- mant during the McCarthy/House Un-American Activities Committee "Blacklist• era. I'd laugh it all off if it wasn't for past experience with this curious, innocently named weather phe- nomenon. It was a weekend day in 1983 that taught me a tough lesson on learning respect for the brute force of Mother Nature. It had been raining for days, the surf raging, the rivers swift and dan- gerous. Back in those days, El Niiio wasn't quite the household word it is today, so rather than blame the long-running downpour on El Nifio, they simply said: It's been raining a lot. I was driving home from work, down the hill from Costa Mesa into Huntington Beach, through the swamped intersections. past the stalled cars, when I saw a cop forlornly standing in the middle of an intersection. his squad car parked nea rby, its red lights reflecting off the dark sheet of wate r that covered the street. I pulled into a gas station and waded over to the cop. "I guess I can't drive down there?" I asked, pointing to the submerged street that led to my neighborhood. He gave me a bemused smile and turned away. The rain was coming down so hard I no longer could see across the intersection. The overworked storm drains roared and the growing river tugged a1 the legs of my pants. I felt I should probably get home. My newb6m son was there with my mother-in-law, and my wife was probably trying to get home herself. I wasn't sure what awaited, except that it prob- ably wasn't good. I waded down Atlanta Avenue, my only clear directional A GHAT MYSTElY OF THE WOILD HAS ALWAYS HEM ... The rain came down harder. I honestly thought I was going to be swept away. Near the entrance to my tract, I looked down and saw a fish dart by. I WdS cold and worried and close to the point of just diving in and swimming the rest of the way home. but the fish fascinated me. I remember looking up and down the street to see if there was any more marine life in the neighbor- hood. My neighborhood was awash but the water had not reached my front door. And yes I even managed to get my son to higher groW1d at a relative's house. But by morning the water had receded. Later I learned the flooding was caused less by the sudden 4- inch downpour than by the extra- ordinary high tide that pushed up the Santa Ana River, forcing its waters to slosh into the streets. I don't know. Maybe that busi- ness about the personal flotation devices isn't such a bad idea. • STEVE MARBLE is the managing edt- tor. N•w Cl•caa•n ,,.. That's when Bergey scrambled for 7 yards to the Irvine 8, slipping just short of the first-down marker as the Vaqueros took over on downs and ran out the clock. •(Bergey) may have scored if he would've stayed on his feet, but he µipped while trying to cut back,~ said Freeman, whose squad went over 100 yards rush- ing and passing for the first time this season. The highlight (of the season) came in the playoffs. I was facing the 2-3-4 hitters in Winnipeg in front of 10,000 fans, and I got a strikeout on a fastball outside. So, I know I can get it by, but, like I said, it just sounds better. You know, 82 or 83. What are your plans from here1 Going in, it was like I wanted to make it through the first half. Then when I did that, I wanted to make it ~ugh the season. I reached my goal and I proved it to everybody. But I actually proved it to mys811, that, yeah, I con actually do this. The Sea Kings, who had a 61- yard touchdown pass called back in the second quarter because of a holding penalty, gave up two big plays in the second half that cost them dearly, the first coming on Sam Paik's 51-yard kickoff return after Lemmerman's 2-yard touch- down jaunt which gave the Sea Kings their 14-7 edge. Paik's return gave the hosts possession at the CdM 47, the first time Irvine started a drive in Sea King territory. The Vaqueros would score on the series and tie the game, 14-14. But on CdM's next series, cor- nerback Adrian Guillen stepped in front of a CdM pass and returned an interception 8 yards to the Sea King 36 with 8:45 to play in the contest Willia.ms, who missed the last really hard on myself. I would say that every time I go out the re, if I don't h elp my team out I've failed. It's like every single game - if I have a bad game, I've failed. You had some pretty rough outings ...
