El Nino?
A s sure as l write this, my
roof will leak, my rain
gutters will buckle and
collapse, a wall of mud will slide
into my back yard and every-
thing material I own will be
swept away in the deluge that's
sme to come.
But -casting my fates here
-I am tired of bfiiiing about El
Nii\o. I am tired of the dire pre-
dictions, tired of staring at my
house and wondering whether it
will weather the storm, tired of
holding my breath and waiting
for -well, the end, l suppose.
Going by the steady stream of
El Niflo updates coming at us
from every media, every mail-
box, every conversation. there
seems little hope of being
spared. The wicked El Niflo-
spawned stonns will barrel down
on us this winter like Armaged-
don itself, unchecked and
unchallenged. ln other words,
we don't stand a chance.
And every time J start to get
the upper hand on my fears, l
read another report, another
warning.
Last weekend I was driving
past the locel high school when I
noticed a knot of people gath-
ered in the parking lot. Fwtd-
raiser for the high school football
team? Nope. A dog-training
class? Hardly. It was, oh yeah, a
sandbagging drill. How to fill
them, how to stack them, where
to store them. I shuddered and
drove on.
lWo weeks ago, I dialed my
way Uuougb the •ram gutter"
section of the Yellow Pages,
looking for someone to come to
my rescue. My first call was to
the Gutter Guy -don't know if
there reall)' is a Gutter Guy, but
ii there was, I wanted to talk to
bim. My call was picked up by
an answering machine: "Due to
El Niilo we can't talce your call.·
lib-oh.
And then just the other day,
as I was sifting through the mail,
I came upon th.is ominous mis-
sive: ~El Niilo is coming! Do you
have your personaJ flotation
device." My personal no-what?
The swift rurrent of El Ni.flo
warnings has left me confused.
Judging by some of the more
sensational forecasts, El Ni.fio is
probably going to kill us all. in

Do you have them? We do.
Big ones. Loud too. Our
block is a magnet for I them. I know we're not the only
1 ones. Now and then, I get an
· angry letter or call at City Hall I demanding that we do some-
thing about them. A few people
I threaten to make them disap-! pear themselves if we don't. i Panhandlers? Politida.ns? I Telemarketers? Uh uh. Crows.
I We have a standing army of I the biggest, loudest crows I've
l ever seen. I'm telling you, these
j things are huge and have an
l ear-splitting call. It's not at all i unusual to ~ awakened in the i wee hours by a Mcaw-caw• cho-
i rus that would raise the dead. ·
l I did some crow homework. i The experts say crows rang~
j from 17 to 21 inches.
l The experts are wrong. The
j crows on my block are about 4
i 1/2-feet feet tall and roughly the i size of a fifth-grader. Some
1 sleepy morning, as I straighten
1 up from picking up the papers
l on the driveway, I fully expect to i~ find a crow staring me in the eye
1 and asking, •What's up, Pete?•
j Crows belong to the corvid i family along with jays, ravens
! (Poe crows), rooks, magpies
i (Heckle and Jeckle), and jack-
i daws (your guess is as good as i mine). They can be found l around the world, except for i Antarctica, New Zealand and
1 South America. Farmers have l always had a love-hate relation-i ship with crows. Crows love
i seed and grain -thus, the
1 scarecrow -but they also i devour every insect in sight -
; the crows, not the farmers.
i As I waddle out the door in
i quest of papers at oh-dark-hun-i dred-hours, there is one particu-
1 lar crow that has it in for me. I
i know it's him because he's
; always alone, perched on the
same streetlight, glaring and
shrieking. U Lg.tare back, he
spreads his )Vin.gs wide in defi-
ance. It's like a scene from a
Carlos Castenada tale. Actually,
crows have been steeped in ·
mysticism for thousands of years,
especially in ancient Egypt. In

We have "Counting Crows"

funny group of puppeteers
called the "Crowtations• who
perform in New York's Central

decked out in double-breasted

incredible routines to recordings
of The Temptations. If you look
closely, you'll see a brief shot of
them in the opening sequence of

Speaking of films, there is a
·Centennial Salute to Frank
Capra• this weekend at the Port
Theatre in Corona del Mar.
"Centennial" because this year
would have marked the leg-
endary director's lOOth birthday
if Capra were still alive. He isn't.
U Capra's name doesn't ring a

name a few.
I'm nuts for Prank Capra and
his work. Capra was a Sicilian
immigrant. He was very bright
and very tough, in spite of the
fact that he was a little more
than 5 feet tall. In 1903, he
arrived at Ellis Island -a 6-
year-old peasant child who'd
never heard a word of English.
1\velve years later he was a
freshman at Cal Tech. He
worked two, sometimes three
jobs to pay his tuition and help
support his family and still
excelled in Cal Tech's engineer-
ing program. After a stint in the
U.S. Army in World War I, he
knocked around Hollywood in
odd jobs until he met <:omedy
king Mac Sennett. He learned
his craft churning out one-reel-
ers for Sennett and Hal Roach.
Much of Capra's career was at
Columbia Pictures, under the
tyrannical Harry Cohen. (All the
old studio moguls were tyrants.)
Just the thought of being called
to Cohen's office would make
the most seasoned Hollywood
pros fall).t on the spot -except
Frank Capra.
In those days, confronting the
head of a major studio was
unthinkable, even for an enor-
mously successful director.
Capra would do it once in the
morning, then burst into Cohen's
office at the end of a shooting
day to put an exclamation point
on it with his enormous cigar.
In World Wu U. be volun-
teered and served u a wartime
film maker -another reason I
like him.
He produced and directed the
•Wby We Fight• leJ'iel, which
was tbe gold standard of docu-
mentaries for the nezt three
decades. When I wu a film stu-
dent at USC, I was lucky enough
to get picked for a fe!Dinar with
Frank Capra. I was so
awestruck, I don't think I ever
said a word.
But it did give me my favorite
Capra story. A self.impressed
grad student asked a torturously
long question about a French
director who insisted on shooting
a scene at exactly the time of the
day called for in the saipt. Did
Capra think there was a value in
that or not? (It took. this kid
about four minutes to get those
two sentences out.)
You could hear a pin drop as
Capra took. a long drag on his
cigar, looked at the ceiling,
looked back at the grad student,
then gave his answer-•He'll
get over it.•
There are some critics today
who are trying to re-cast Capra
as a bad guy for being an infor-
mant during the
McCarthy/House Un-American
Activities Committee "Blacklist•
era. It's interesting that they
spoke up only after Capra's
death. At least they h~
sense not to go toe-to-·th
Frank Capra, all 5 feet 2 him,

so long as we get our rain gutters
cleaned, learn to stack sandbags
and have a personal flotation
device at the ready.
I'd laugh it all off if it wasn't for
past experience with this curious,
innocently named weather phe-
nomenon.
It was a weekend day in 1983
that taught me a tough lesson on
learning respect for the brute
force of Mother Nature. It had
been raining for days, the surf
raging, the rivers swift and dan-
gerous.
Back in those days, El Niiio
wasn't quite the household word
it is today, so rather than blame
the long-running downpour on El
Nifio, they simply said: It's been
raining a lot.
I was driving home from work,
down the hill from Costa Mesa
into Huntington Beach, through
the swamped intersections. past
the stalled cars, when I saw a cop
forlornly standing in the middle of
an intersection. his squad car
parked nea rby, its red lights
reflecting off the dark sheet of
wate r that covered the street.
I pulled into a gas station and
waded over to the cop.
"I guess I can't drive down
there?" I asked, pointing to the
submerged street that led to my
neighborhood.
He gave me a bemused smile
and turned away. The rain was
coming down so hard I no longer
could see across the intersection.
The overworked storm drains
roared and the growing river
tugged a1 the legs of my pants.
I felt I should probably get
home. My newb6m son was
there with my mother-in-law, and
my wife was probably trying to
get home herself. I wasn't sure
what awaited, except that it prob-
ably wasn't good.
I waded down Atlanta
Avenue, my only clear directional

aid being the center stnpe in the
street. Halfway down the block
the water was up to my thighs,
pulling on my legs. The rain
came down harder. I honestly
thought I was going to be swept
away.
Near the entrance to my tract, I
looked down and saw a fish dart
by. I WdS cold and worried and
close to the point of just diving in
and swimming the rest of the way
home. but the fish fascinated me.
I remember looking up and down
the street to see if there was any
more marine life in the neighbor-
hood.
My neighborhood was awash
but the water had not reached my
front door. Though it would even-
tually. Yes, I spent the night
putting my furniture up on bricks
to spare it from the flood I was
certain would be coming. And yes
I even managed to get my son to
higher groW1d at a relative's
house. But by morning the water
had receded.
Later I learned the flooding
was caused less by the sudden 4-
inch downpour than by the extra-
ordinary high tide that pushed up
the Santa Ana River, forcing its
waters to slosh into the streets.
I don't know. Maybe that busi-
ness about the personal flotation
devices isn't such a bad idea.

Henna painting comes to Costa Mesa
By Leslie Simmons
The ancient art of henna paint-
ing is the newest thing at The
Latest Thing store in Costa Mesa.
•1 saw it on one of our psy-
chics, who is from Malaysia, and
I was intrigued by it," said Kim-
berly Funk, co-owner of the
angelic/metaphysical/12-step
and recovery store.
Henna painting/tattooing is a
traditional art form known as
Mehndi, which ortginated tn
North African and Middle But-
ern countries before spreading to
India and other Asian countrtes
in the 12th century.
In traditional cultures, Mehndi
is used medicinally and ceremo-
niou.lly and is considered good
luck but was Westernized last
year when stars like Demi Moore
and Mira Sorvino were seen
donning the temporary reddi.sh-
brown decorations at movie
openings and other events.
"This is something for people
who always wanted a tattoo but
didn't want the permanency,"
Punk said.
The process, which takes any-
where from flve minutes to two
hours depending on the design,
1s simple, patnless and can last
from four days to six weeks.
Designs can be done on any
part ot the body -the most pop-
ular are ankles, a.rms and hands.
The actual apJ)Jic&timl paste
conaists ol tbe dark greenilb.-
brown henna, wbk:h 11 ausbed
into a powder and mixed with
other ingredients that can
include tea, lemon and eucalyp-
tus oil. The paste is applied to
the skin using a cone tube simi-
lar to ones used for cake decorat-
ing. The decorations can be any
design or size, ranging from
Celtic and tribal art to butterllies
and fairies and are done free-
hand or with a stencil.
Punk currently has two local
artists, Ivy Tomashoff and Jen-
nifer Kogge, making master-
pieces on customers.

major at Orange Coast College.

The director captures the
sweeping vistas of the Himalayas
and the centuries-old lifestyle of
the nbetan people. We get stun-
ning visual scenes in the Bud-
dhist monpteries, but this is
mostly baclc:ground, as the movie
really centers on Brad Pitt's char-
acter, a Nazi running from his
past.
We get dozens of close-ups of
Pitt's handsome face filling the
screen with his dyed blond hair
and phony German accent. We
get precious little time with the
youn? Dalai Lama, whom Brad
does not even meet until the film
is 90 minutes old.
Uke Ghandi and Mother Tere-

the spiritual giants of our time.
Like Martin Luther j<.ing, his

ing that this film reduces his pro-
found philosophy to a few
cliched statements that give little
insight to Us m~ source. sun. there is a lot to like in
this well-made movie that takes

causes: the liberation of Tibet

•Corona del Mar sees 14-7 lead
evaporate in the fourth quarter as
Irvine rallies for a pulsating Sea
View League football victory.
By Richard Dunn, Daily Pilot
IRVINE -There were drives that stalled,
others that infused new life into the Corona
del Mar High offense with sophomore
Mike Bergey joining the school's meny-go-
round of quarter~cks.
In the waning moments, on a fourth-
down play to end CdM's longest drive of
Thursday's Sea View League football game
against host Irvine, the Sea Kings finished a
half-yard short of perhaps knocking off the
Vaqueros in a wild fourth quarter.
•These guys played with a lot of heart,
and ifs bard for them emotionally becaUJe
this was a bard football game to lose,• CdM
Coach Dick Freeman said, following his
team's 20-1.f loss.
The Sea Kings (2-5, 0-2 in league), who
led 14-7 late in the third quarter, gave up
two fourth-quarter touchdowns as Irvine (3-
4, 1-1), with the return of its standout run-
ning back. Al Williams, may have put an
end to CdM's playoff hopes for 1997.
•we've got a shot next week at Wood-
bridge,• Freeman said, •and I think a team
with two los~ still has a shot of going to
the playoffs this year.~

Later in the drive, Thurman
made another huge catch in traf-
fic, this time a 13-yard pass on
third-and-five, giving CdM a first
down at the Irvine 17.
But three plays later, the Sea
Kings, needing a touchdown,
faced fourth-and-eight. That's
when Bergey scrambled for 7
yards to the Irvine 8, slipping just
short of the first-down marker as
the Vaqueros took over on downs
and ran out the clock.

The Sea Kings, who had a 61-
yard touchdown pass called back
in the second quarter because of a
holding penalty, gave up two big
plays in the second half that cost
them dearly, the first coming on
Sam Paik's 51-yard kickoff return
after Lemmerman's 2-yard touch-
down jaunt which gave the Sea
Kings their 14-7 edge.
Paik's return gave the hosts
possession at the CdM 47, the first
time Irvine started a drive in Sea
King territory. The Vaqueros
would score on the series and tie
the game, 14-14.
But on CdM's next series, cor-

It's just a hitter's league. If you
look at a lot of the rookies, it you
take the rookie stats, they
(skeptics) just didn't look across
the whole board. A lot of
(rookies) were released. They
sort of just came and went. I was
just really happy to finish out the
season. So when they shoot me •
down in the papers, they're
actually comparing me with
peopl~ in the Major Leagues
right now. If you look at the
numbers in the Major Leagues,
that's what they're comparing me
with. That's a whole different
ball game. Compare me with
other rookies in the Northern
League.

other time, did you think that
