a community center, with ottioes
and meeting rooms built in for use

by local nonprofit groups, officials

But the neW buildhlg also fig-

Sea Kings, the Sallon (15-2, 9..0.in league)
have a chance to flnilh a league 'campcUign
unbeaten for the fourth time in five yean.
Newport Harbor, .S-1 in league mce 1993,
losing only to Santa Margarita Jut year,
scored from evmywhere on the floor in this
one, including .the most unHkely of areas.
In the crud.al teamd game, Corona del
Mar (9-6, 6-3) twice had a seven-point lead,
but the Sailors came back and wan. It
appeared CdM bad gained momentum on
Jordana Havriluk's solo scoring block on
Newport's Jennifer Carey to end a Iona rally,
giving CdM a 13-6 advantage, but the Sailors'
unrelenting defense kept them alive.
CdM earned just two sideouts during a
Newport Harbor scorlng run that tied the
gameL 13-13, a comeback generated by Bren-
da Waterman's serving. In the run, Keyes, a Junior, dug a ball in the back row and returned
it untouched to the CdM side.
The point. kept afloat by Carey's sparkling
dig, cut CdM's lead to 13-9, then Newport's
Kathy Lavold (nine kills, three blocks) added a
kill, the Sea Kings were called for a rotation
violation, and Lavold and Aprll Ross each
added kills to tie it.
1\vo sideouts later, Ross (18 kills) put t}Je
finishing touches on the 1lln' comeback.
·we caught some tire, and we got a couple
of key digs,• Newport Harbor Coach Dan
Glenn said of the comeback.
In the match. Carey had eight kills (lDOltly
from set), three solo blocka, an ace and (2
assists. 1'Qsta om added five tms. ~ ~ .. I thoUght we played better than lad-time,•
said CdM Coe.ch Steve Conti. whose squad
absorbed a 15-?, 15-7, 15-9 defeat in the initial
meeting.
Havriluk, a senior outside hitter, led CdM
with 17 kills, two blocks and an ace, while
Sarah Petry had 13 kills. Setter Corre Myer

bad six kills for the Sea Kings, who, like the
Sailors, have already clinched a CIP Southern
Section Playoff berth.
Newport Harbor had no service errors in
the first game while racing to a 14-3 ed9e.
CdM had five glitches from behind the service
line to help the l8rs build their lead.
Ross bad six kills in the game and team-
mate Marissa Cothran capped the win with a
solo block on CdM's Whitney McDonnell,.
Havriluk bad eight of her kills in the second
game as CdM stormed to its biggest leads of
the match. She bad six kills early when the
Sea Kings built an 8-3 lead.

Newport Harbor, also led by seniors Moni-

the third game, but CdM wouldn't die.
