• Mustang senion vividly recall the 35-8 dnibbing by Laguna Hills
when the two unbeatens squared Oft for the PCL crown as freshmen.
By Barry Faulkner, Dailt Pilot
COSTA MESA -The Costa
Mesa High football players have
been looking ahead all week to
tonight's 7 o'clock Pacific Coast
League title showdown with Lagu-
na Hills at Mission Viejo High.
But they've also been reflect.
ing back to 1994, when the two
teams met under similar drcum·
stances and the Mike Jones-led
Hawks ca.me away with a domi-
nant 35-8 venlict to win the fresh-
men league crown.
•ob yeah, I've thought about
(the freshmen game},• said senior
defensive end Richard Price.
"(Tonight) will be basically the
same players that played in that
game, on both sides. We've never
beaten them and th.at has really
inspired us this year."
Mesa, keyed by a majority of
sophomores, did defeat Laguna
Hills on the junior varsity level in
1995, en route to the PCL JV title.
But the Hawks used most of their
sophomores for varsity duty that
season, diminishing the lingering
impact of the win.
Laguna Hills won the '95 varsi-
ty game, 41--0, and topped a Mus-
tang squad with numerous junior
starters last fall, 35-12.
•This is the shot we've been
waiting for,• said Mesa senior
linemen Jeremy Via. •Tuey beat
us our freshman year, but this is
revenge. We got them one year in
the N game, but that wasn't the
same."
Mesa's Jeremy Siedsma, a
senlOr m.tde linebacker, called
tonight'• rematch •pretty much
the game ol all our liYm, • noting
he's eaten beeltbier and gone to
bed earlier than UIU8l Ud.f week
to ensure he'll be at ~ best
tonight.
•They've dominated the
league for the last couple years
and (Mesa) has only beaten them
once (39-36, in '93) that I. can
remember (since '88), • Siedsma
said. "They've been pretty
unbeatable, but I tb1nk we have a
team that can a~ beet them.
We all have higb hepes. •
Price said the Mustangs came
into the '94 showdown with some
inf:tated egos. ·we were real cocky and Mike
Jones (Laguna Hills' record-set-
ting tailback) just tore us up.•
Then-freshmen coach Mike
Crowe, now the offensive coordi-
nator for Coach Jeny Howell's
varsity, said Jones was a one-man
wnldring crew.
"He was so far superior to any
other back we'd seen, we bad
trouble stopping him,• Crowe
said of Jones, who finished with
185 yards and two touchdowns
that day and has gone on to
become the Orange County
career rushing leader with 5,945
yards beading into tonight's duel.
•He was just so big and intim-
idating,• said Mesa senior V1nce
Hamade, then a 5-&, 125-pound
outside linebacker dealing with
the nearly fully matured Jones.
Jones' current 6-1 1/2, 2~
frame, in fact, is only margin.ally
bigger than three seasoos ago.

acing memo-
ries of that first
encounter with
Jones.
•He was
basically big-
ger, stronger
and faster than
everyone,•
Shanley said. '--~~~~~~~~~~~~----------1
Siedsma said some shoddy
playing conditions accentuated
Laguna Hills' strength advantage
in the trenches, as well.
•Tue field was real muddy that
day and they were all about twice
the si7.e of us,• Siedsma, now 6-2,
205, recalled. •1 was about 140
pounds and the guys I was going
against was about 220. •
Ham.ade backed up Siedsma's
recollection, stating, "They out-
powered us that day.•
Price said that first encounter
spawned a healthy respect for the
Hawks among Mustang players,
a respect which bu endwed. •we definitely respect their
program.• Prioe said. •we always
look at the weekly stats to see
how they're doing. We've kept an
eye on them. because we knew,
sooner or later, we'd have to beat
them to w1n this league. We've
come into .wery game knowing
they probably baYe the better team. and that we have to rise to
their level to wtn. •
Via sattl' til! a&o admired the
Hawks' rugged schedule this sea-:
son, including their lone loss (34-'
21) to highly regarded Dana HiJll ,
of the Division I South Coast
League.
•They've played tougher
teams than we have,• Via said.
"But I think we can win. We all
have respect for them. but I'm
hoping they're thinking to them-
selves 'this is just another 'Costa .
Mesa team.' They kicked our
butts last year, so maybe they'll
be thinking it'll be easy again this
year.•
Crowe, however, believes the
Mustangs can't count on any
complacency.
"I know. their coaching staff
will wor~ to make sure that ~
n't happen.• Crowe said. •we
went to their place and beat them
in '93 ln a game they expected to
win. so I think they'll be able to
sell their kids on the fad that :
