F or centuries, tarot cards
have been \lied by for-
tunetellen, gypsies and
psychics to look into a penon.'s
psyche and help abed light· on
what the future ID4Y hold.
Now, local artists are uStng
the influence of a tarot card to
create a sped.al ezhibit titled
"Pin de Siecle: Another View of
the Next,• which Gallery Par-
adiso will auction off tonight.
The artwork featured for the
· live auction was created by
local designers and people
involved in· the action sports
industry, from photographers for
Surfer magazine to graphic
designers, all with an undedy-
ing theme of the tarot card they
wern dealt.
Their work represents their
interpretation and vision of
tomorrow.
·on one side, they're not
artists -not in the muSeum
crowd,• Dana Keene said. •But
they really are artists. I think
they don't think of themselves
as artists, but who knows? We
could both be wearing one of
their designs .•
Some of the work produced
include a piece by The Mail-
man, a designer for the hot local
underground surfwear compa-
ny, Volcom.
The MaUman wu given the
hanged man card, so he created
a collage on cardboard with
shredded U.S. CUJTency sur-
rounding William Katt, the star
of the early '80s show •The
Greatest American Hero• tn full
regalia as the Hanged Man.
Other pieces include Dogpile
clothing owner Shawn Peter-
son's "The Good Son,• a piece
he based on the 10 at swords
tarot card, and •Here and
There,• a piece ~ted by
Quibilver designers that fea-
tures baJ1 Qf a disco ball and a
red Buddha and hangs from the
ceiling.
Proceeds from the auction .
will benefit Share Our Selves
(SOS), and the Surfrider Foun-
dation, two organizations close
to both the gallery owners,
Charlie Yoon and Keene, and
many of the parttepenti.
The benefit exhibition has
been put together by Gallety
Paradiso and will be curated by
. Rose Apocado Jones, a free-
l~ce writer who has strong ties
with both the local Orange
County fashion and designer
industry and the action sports
industry.

chance to match the 1993 Mus-
tangs' outright league crown.
the only such jewel in the pro-
gram's treasure chest.
Perception: Costa Mesa's
defense, which had surrendered
an Orange County-and Divi-
sion VIn-low 30 points through
eight games, was impenetrable,
particularly via the pass, where
they bad amassed 20 intercep-
tions.
Reality: The Hawks had four
drives inside the.Mesa 25-yard
line that failed to-pad the score-
board and senior quarterback
Tommy Banning threw for a
season-high 191 yards.
•flbe hosts, 8-1, 4-0 in
league and ranked No. 7 in the
county) are a good football
team,• Howell said. after bis
Mustangs, ranked No. 9 in the
county, fell to 8-1, 3-1. ·we did-
n't have the consistency we
needed to have on offense and
(the Hawks' defense) physically
handled our people up front. We
got knocked down tonight,
everyone does. We'll get anoth-
er shot.•
Banning, who bit tight end
Ryan Johnson for a 21-yard
touchdown to open the scoring
on the Hawks' fowth offensive
play, said the scoreboard told
the tale.
•This was a huge statement
for UI, • Benning Mid. •They
were ranked ahead of us in the
division, IO we wanted to lbow
we were for real and not all talk.
Costa Mesa was a lot of talk. I
think they thought they were
better than they actually were.
They're a tough team, but we
just beat 'em.•
The Mustangs, to their credit,
did stand up to the fOUl'-time
PCL champions much of the
evening, holding county career
rushing leader Mike Jones to 71
yards, outside of bis 8()..yard TD
sprint with 6:43 left before half-
time, which helped put the
Hawks up, 14-0.
But when Jones, who has col-
lected. 580 of bis 6,096 yards in -
three seasons against Mesa,
was being limited to just three
runs of more than 6 yards on bis
23 carries, Benning was finding
open receivers.
•When it's run, run, run,
sometimes our (secondMy) fell
asleep,• said Howell, who then
acknowledged the Hawks' aeri-
al assault could not be solely
attributed to bis defense's men-
tal breakdowns.
•They beat us with speed,•
said Howell, who watched tight
ends Johnson and Saia
Makakaufald run free up the
seams of h1s secondary for five
catches and 96 yards.
Jeff Fischer's 57-yard bomb
for an insurance ID on the first
play of the fowth quarter was
one of h1s two catches, while
Banning found Jones deep for
38 yards to the 8, before a Mesa
sack foiled the late scoring bid
as the first half expired.
•The score should have been
a heck of a lot more, just in the
first half,• Bresnahan said. ·we
dropped a touchdown pass and
we made a lot of mental mis-
takes.•
Mesa's best scoring threat
ended when a fumble at the 1
was recovered in the end zone
by the Hawks with 2:35 left in
the game.

High celebrated Senior Night

everybody got into the a~ as the
Eagles ran away from Laguna

League football action.
Senior running back James
Dawkins turned in one of bis best
performances of the season as he
danced and slashed bis way for
224 yards and three touchdowns
on 25 carries.
•This was a fun night for us,• a
smiling Dawkins said at midfield
following the game. •1t was an

glad the seniors had a big night.
Everybody on this team con-

Several Estancia seniors bad

tight end/linebacker Andy Gali-

tion led to Dawkinl' --?-yard
touchdown run. He also bad the
Eagles' lone pass reception of the
night.
Safety Matthew Barnard bad a
fourth-quarter interception. and
defensive lineman Manuel Dimas
had a sack and continually pres-
sured. Artist quarterback Ryan
Schissler out of the backfield.
Yet for all the senior hoopla, it
was junior Manu Tanielu who
stole the show in the first half.
Tanielu rushed for three touch-
downs and gained 126 yards of
bis 142 (on 10 carries) in the
opening half. A 4-4-yard nm for
an apparent ro was called back.
•we played real well tonight,
and our (running) backs ran the
ball hard,• Estancia Coach John
Uebengood said.
•1t was nice that everyone got
the chance to play and overall, it
was a pretty good football game
for our team.•
Winless Laguna Beach (0-9,
0-4) stunned Bstanda early by
taking the game's opening pos-
session 55 yards for the score.
One play after Es'tanci.a came
right back to take an 8-6 lead on
'Imlielu's 15-yard touchdown run
and Dawkins' tw.o-paint conver-
sion run. Schissler teamed up
with Matt Hellewell on a 76-yard
touchdown pass, the play giving
the Artists one last lead at 12-8.

they fell in the semis to the eventual league
champs, then dropped the third-place game to
Stiefel and Mitton in a 0-6, 7-5, 1-6 battle.

have been stopped by anybody.
"Nina was · really on and just continued
from the (semifinal) match," Mang said.

Orange Coast women's soccer team
duels Cypress tonight for OEC title.
By Molly Yanity, Daily Pilot
Riding a 12-game streak in which they have not
lost a game isn't nearly enough for the women on
the Orange Coast College soccer team. A season
that has seen the Pirates sacrifice just two goals in
Orange Empire Conference play isn't enough.
The season. carrying with it many accomplish-
ments, has come down to one. game. And winning
that game -tonight'• showdown with Cypress at
Cal State Pullerton's ntan Stadium (7:30)-will be
enough ... for now.
The Pirates have a 9-0-1 OEC record, as Cypress
owns an 8-0-1 mark.
1be "ones" tacke4 onto the end of both their
marks came at the hands of each other - a scoreless
tie in Costa Mesa Oct. t•.
·1 thought our tint game with them was an out-
standing example of how good community college
women's soccer can be," OCC'1 Coach Barbara
Bond.-ld. "It wu well-~yeci and clean. It wasn't
what we've ClOllDe to ezp8d from them." ™ Cout.cypreu rivalry bas been one in exis-
tence lince the programs adopted the sport. one that
bas seen the Chargen get the upper hand on the
Bucs.
"'The fact that it ii Cypress puts a little more on
the line," Bond said.
Cypress eliminated Bond's 1996 squad in ·the
Southern California Regional finals to advance to
the state tournament.
The season before, it was the same scenario as
the Chargers opened the out door for the Bucs in the
Regional title game.
But, Bond owns a State Championship (from
1989) while Cypress is in se4Tch of its first.
•Cypress has been productive on offense and our
defense as a unit has to be good," Bond said.. •Of
course, on the offensive line, I'd love to have any-
body put it in the net, but if I was to have someone
(step up} it would ideally be our keeper and sweep-
er."
In the two teams' first meeting of the season,
Coast's goalkeeper Kim Rudloff (Fountain Valley)
and sweeper Jessica Schroeder (Costa Mesa), who
usually plays forward, squelched several Charger
attacks.
Bond said that it is probable that Schroeder will
return to the sweeper spot Friday.
"I'd like to see a dean. fair game like last time,•
Bond said. •rd just like to see us outscore them."
Sophomore midfielder Megan Waters, a sopho-
more out of Huntington Beach, bas been on fire of
late _canning three g~ and adding an assist in Tuesdays win over Riverside Qty. •
•we need a better performance from the team as
a whole,• Bond said comparing her unit's play in the
tie to wtiat it will need to notch a win. "I would hope
we can walk out of there Prlday knowing we gave
our best effort. There'• a lot riding on this game for
us.•
The Eagles finish the season at
17-9 with a 1-+ PCL mark.
