NEWPORT-t...mSA -Claim-
ing damage to his personal and
professional reputation, Arcadia
Qty Attorney Mike Miller has
filed a $50,000 claim against the
Newport-Mesa Unified School
District because of a quote from
school board member Jim Ferry-
man.
Miller, whose daughter was
the former editor of the Costa
Mesa High School newspaper,
the Pony Express, had threat-
ened to sue the district because it
failed to publish several sexually
related articles by her. Mjller
claimed the students' First
Amendment privileges were
infringed.
Ferryman said the articles
were inappropriate for the sev-
enth-and eighth-gTaders at Cos-
ta Mesa High, and the school dis-
trict needs to maintain a tighter
rein on what the newspaper pub-
lishes.
When asked to comment on
Miller's threatened suit. Ferryman

THE ISSUE: Members of anti-abortion
group have staged protests at local high
schools, displaying graphi.c images.
I ~ proud to say my husband
is among those who have
been outside local high
schools showing and discussing
with students the truth about
abortion. ·
In response to those who
object to this activity. I must
concede that photos of dismem-
bered human beings are dis-
gusting and shocking.
It is incredible to me, howev-
er. that those who compJatn
about the graphic phot09 of the
aftermath of an abortion do not
logically deduce that the •pro-
cedure" that is being committed
daily in this country is supported
by our tu dollars.
If these photos should be
banned, how about the •proce-
dure?•.
To the parents who think that
these photos are too distutblng
to be viewed by their teens, I
say this: Teens are shown
footage of car accidents and are
then told not to drink and drive.
Teens are shown footage of
the Holocaust and told to toler-
ate others' differences. These
are noble attempts to educate.
Showing teens iLborted
babies to dissuade them from
having an abortion, however, is
for some reason disturbing and
unacceptable.
Parents. are you aware that
your teens can go and have
your grandchildren dismem-
bered in the womb, as these
graphic photos show, withoqt
your knowledge and consent?
Now that is disturbing and
unacceptable.
MAlUE D. Pfrr-PAYNE
Costa Mesa
T his letter is in respome to
the article in the Dally Pilot,
dated Friday, Oct, 31, concern-
ing the anti-abortion protesters
at Corona del Mar High School.
(•Abortion foes protest near . ·
local schools.•) n angers and frightened me
to think that these demomtra-
tors, who are affiliated with
Operation Rescue, have become
so desperate to deliver their
message that they could verbal-
ly and visually assault seventh-
through 12th-graders with their
literature and placards.
I can't ignore the creepy feel-
ing that one overzealous mem-
ber of their group could have
crossed 'the line, and physically
endangered one of our children.
Unfortunately, the reality is,
followers of this group have
been known to resort to extreme
violence.
Regardless of one's ¥ets
concerning abortion, I don't
think it's a large stretch to d eter-
mine that a high school's park-
ing lot and entrances are not the
place to be dealing with this
very sensitive issue.
My children have p.u:tidpat-
ed in health and sex eduCaUon
classes, given through the New-
po}t-Mesa school system, bi
bolh elementary and high
school. 'The topics covered in
those daaN have always been
available to us as parents to
screen beforehand, so we could
decide whether or not we want•
ed our cblldren to attend.
Purthennore, we had to sign
a spetja1 coment form to allow
them to participate in those
classes.
In other words, our role as
parents was respected and we
had the opportunity to choose
whether or not, and when, we
wanted our children to learn
these life-related lessons.
I am deeply off ended that
these protesters feel it is their
right to ignore our role as par-
ents and educate our children
for us on this delicate subject.
Their implication is that we are
failing ~ our duties, and that
OUT poor, na,ive adolescents and
teens need this desperately
important information in order
to go on with their lives, in a
properly Wuiilinated and
informed manner.
Well, I'm all for education
and knowledge, when it's pre-
sented in an open and balanced
way, where all options are cov-
ered, ranging from total absti-
nence to Ula possibility and
ramifications ot abortion.
But to ambush umuspectfng
students and their parents on a
lovely fall afternoqn after IChoo)
seems completely berbartc and
shows very bad judgment on the
part of the demonstrators.
